Referencing obscure firearms

[edit]

This will always be the challenge. Let me explain what is needed:

We require references from significant coverage about the topic of the article, and independent of it, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS please. See WP:42. Please also see WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources and WP:SELFPUB which has clear limitations on self published sources. Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact referred to, that meet these tough criteria is likely to allow an article to remain or a draft to be accepted. Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the topic is not suitable for inclusion, certainly today.

Burton Machine Rifle suffers from primary sources. However, I made the judgement that there were sufficient other sources to give it a better than 50% chance of surviving an immediate deletion process.

Our role as reviewers is to seek to ensure that an article will not immediately be subject to one of our deletion processes when it is accepted. That is why we push it back to the author on occasion by declining it. We want to accept articles.

No precedent is ever set by any article for any other. If it were we would have a brutally fast descent into idiocracy. That said, I feel you may use the referencing model accepted in BML as a guide, though do not ever argue "but the Burton Machine Rifle article" in defence of another article or draft, since that argument fails by definition.

I like trout.

Good luck with your quest to add obscure firearms to Wikipedia. It's a deserving topic. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 08:01, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
