Conflict of interest? Paid editing?
[edit]Two very singular articles there, ShimsCabot. Patrick McGuire (solicitor), of Thompsons Solicitors Scotland. It's not every new editor who chooses to write long & technically very well-formed articles on such a narrow subject-base. We learn that "Standing up for the masses has been Patrick's guiding principle throughout a large part of his career", which reads like pure PR bullshit. Eight or so references for the Six Pack Health and Safety Regulations also seems like bullshit, of the baffles brains type.
Please see WP:COI and, if you'd be so good, let me know whether these are COI/Paid articles. thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:52, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- If you don't have a COI, I would be curious about this image which you claim is your own work. Greyjoy talk 01:05, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- It is an interesting image. Doesn't seem to be on the solicitors' website, nor findable via tineye or google image search. Exif shows the photographer to be PAUL HAMPTON who is presumably https://paulhampton.co.uk/ ... so ... how comes this admittedly 2013 image to be the own work of ShimsCabot? --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:19, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Thompsons Solicitors Scotland
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Thompsons Solicitors Scotland, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DMySon (talk) 02:18, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, ShimsCabot. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. As per the discussion on may talk page. [1] Greyjoy talk 08:13, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Declaring Conflict of Interest
[edit]As ShimsCabot I am declaring a COI. I am paid by a media agency, BORN Thinking, to write content for law firms and financial services providers across the UK. When asked to create content for a Wikipedia page, I do this as part of my salaried work for BORN Thinking and I never take direct payment from the company. However, I understand the conflict of interest and agree to no longer add or amend content directly onto article pages and will suggest edits through the prescribed routes and article wizards. I am happy to abide by the Wikipedia rules and guidelines and understand that any content I suggest must be, factual, verifiable and encyclopedic.
Please accept my apologies for the Connected Contributor oversights. I am open to all advice and guidance. ShimsCabot (talk) 14:46, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- I have added this disclosure on your userpage in accordance with the paid editing disclosure policy. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 17:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- I do have a question regarding your addition to your userpage. You have mentioned that you have been employed by BORN since 2008, yet your Wikipedia account has only existed since April 2021. Have you edited Wikipedia prior to then using a different account or accounts? If so, are you still accessing any of them? --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 13:21, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for your interest. I am primarily a writer of news media for websites and social media. In the past, I have been asked to create page additions for Wikipedia, however, I have not been involved in adding any of it. I do not have access to the accounts used. My recent article, which has now been deleted, was my first attempt at creating a page and adding it. I hope to be able to continue creating articles and adding suggestions for page improvements using my ShimsCabot username, so the Notice of Paid Work Relating to Wikipedia on my User Page is worded to cover onward contributions. Do you have any advice or guidance in this respect? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShimsCabot (talk • contribs) ; reposted and replied to at User talk:Drm310

[edit]Deletion discussion
[edit]Hello, ShimsCabot,
I just wanted to let you know I mentioned you at a discussion I started at Wikipedia talk:Proposed deletion#Contested PROD?. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 23:31, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Liz Read! Talk!. I wonder if you had a chance to look at the proposed amendments for the page in my Sandbox https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:ShimsCabot/sandbox and the supporting statement for my objection to the PROD. Patrick's work as a campaigner and solicitor advocate is notable for the reasons mentioned there; in particular his campaigning to change Scottish laws so as to benefit individuals who have suffered mass wrongs. His current work in the field of historical child abuse claims is particularly noteworthy now the case against Celtic FC has become a group (class) action - this is a first in Scottish law and the case will undoubtedly set precedents as to how the new Group Action laws, under the Civil Litigation (Expenses and Group Proceedings) (Scotland) Act 2018, are used in the future - it will be noteworthy whether the case is won or lost. Many of Patrick's previous cases have set similar precedents, but I took a list of these cases out of his page as there had been a negative comment about them and the source refs. I would welcome any advice on neutrality, so that I can make the entry as encyclopaedic as possible. ShimsCabot (talk) 10:01, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
