Inappropriate edit summary?
Hey Serge. I've just come across this edit summary. Not that I personally care about Dr. Luke and I'm well aware he was accused of sexual assault by Kesha, but he was never (or hasn't been) convicted of raping anybody and it just seems inappropriate to say as an edit summary here regardless. What do you think? Ss112 03:33, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2021).
- Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
- The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
- Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee Elections is open until 23:59, 06 December 2021 (UTC).
- The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Clarification
Regarding my edit to Portal 2: The issue had nothing to do with "non-fan" anything. It was that the similarities were already explained in the paragraph and I simply repeated them. "Fans" or "non-fans" would have no differing knowledge, which I know for a fact since I didn't know any of the information I added until I simply copied it from elsewhere in the article. I agree that a better edit would have been to eliminate the tag as useless instead of expressing the honest truth in my edit summary, which others might misinterpret as you did. Thanks for the heads-up. Forensic Kidology (talk) 00:36, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Forensic Kidology I think you're missing the point a bit. My point was more that you need to stop with the personal attacks. Right or wrong, your edit summary was inappropriate. You can express your "honest truth" without petty name calling. Sergecross73 msg me 00:39, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I understand. As we both made mistakes, I'm glad we're here to correct each other and improve our efforts in the future. Forensic Kidology (talk) 00:42, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Again, I did not add that tag, I merely stated that I could see how someone would deem it necessary. But as long as you understand NPA, we're good here. Sergecross73 msg me 00:52, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Warszawa (Porcupine Tree album)
Hi Sergecross73,
I have questions regarding your reversion of the article Warszawa (Porcupine Tree album) and your comment, "Band camp and Discogs are not reliable sources in the Wikipedia context, so this is absolutely not an appropriate article as is."
The Discogs reference was for an image of the CD booklet itself, and the information it contained. It would have been written by or approved by Porcupine Tree and/or its management team. Is it a better practice to cite the CD album's booklet directly instead of Discogs?
Similarly, the Bandcamp reference was to Porcupine Tree's official Bandcamp site, and includes verbiage relevant to the 2020 remaster, which is a digital-only release. The band's official Twitter account mentions it, and even links to the same Bandcamp page: https://twitter.com/porcupinetree/status/1275181952929345537. Would you suggest I reference that too?
Lastly, I could add the Allmusic review as a reference, which is considered a reliable source by Wikipedia, correct?
Appreciate your help.
Best, Mike
- Hi there. I think the disconnect here is that none of these sources help prove that the article is notable. On Wikipedia, subjects only have their own article if they meet the WP:GNG. Meeting the GNG requires third party sources that cover the subject in significant detail. A detailed Rolling Stone review would help satisfy it. Database entries like Discogs or Bandcamp do not. A more detailed explanation with examples cane be found here. Sergecross73 msg me 03:16, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
Editing a previous comment on a talk page
I had made a statement on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music, and you called me on one portion of my statement, so I went back and corrected it. I think I should have crossed out my earlier statement so that it could be seen that I made a change, so that one portion your statement wasn't left hanging after following a changed statement by me, but I don't know how to use coding to cross out words. I am writing here to apologize to you for my clumsy edit, and will try to correct it again if you want me to and can tell me how to do it right. Mburrell (talk) 03:46, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- Don't worry, about it Mburrell, my irritation is more with the trajectory of the discussion, not your comment. It's easy to miss people when reviewing stances of a discussion, and either way consensus is still against me on this one. Don't worry about it. Sergecross73 msg me 03:49, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- Wikipedia plot summaries are meant to be short and concise overviews, consisting of only major plot points. Adding that does not contribute anything, especially when the summary already described him as a "demonic monster". It is not necessary to add. Sergecross73 msg me 11:46, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
Need help
Hey there, It's me Himu and I hope you remember me. So, I was having this doubt whether to stylize the artist names as FINNEAS, HYDE as on Wikipedia they are written as Finneas and Hyde. That's not their full name, and stylized name is always written in all caps but writing it in small just obsoletes the stylization effect. Is it okay to use ALL CAPS when mentioning them in song titles or album artist names? Please clarify, I'd be thankful. Thank you! HimuTheEditor (talk) 13:23, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Himu, good to see you again. We don't usually use all-caps per WP:ALLCAPS. Unless it's an abbreviations (like NBA or ESPN), we usually just follow normal English capitalization. Sergecross73 msg me 14:52, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Editor has been making the same track listing edits for months
Hey Serge. The other day I came across the editor Filmgirlgz, who, despite their name, has seemed almost entirely focused on album articles for the past six months, namely those by Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They have overstuffed track listings with unnecessary details [2] (going against the advice of Template:Track listing that it should be easily scannable), capitalised the first letters of words in note= params, and, perhaps most troubling of all, altered titles of Carey's songs by inserting commas where they think they should be [3] and invented "featuring" credits where they don't exist [4]. I reverted most of their current edits the other day and went through all but Dion's albums and manually undid their edits, but this isn't their first run-in with an editor, as both Max24 ([5] [6]) and Binksternet ([7], [8]) reverted a batch of their edits months ago, which they promptly returned to restore, even after multiple subsequent reverts, all without explanation. After my reverts, they have returned to two Carey articles today to partially restore their edits [9], [10]. These edits are very unhelpful and in some cases, deliberately disruptive. Not sure what to do here, as I've warned them already, and given this happening after their near-immediate manual reverts of Max24 and Binksternet a couple months ago, appears likely to continue. - Hey there, User:Ss112. Long time no see. I read your above message and I've also posted the same message on the user's page as I also edit musical albums and I know how frustrating it can get in edit wars. It appears that they do not read their talk page messages but undoing the edits, correcting their edits and mentioning them on their talk page is all we can do. Anyway, if they still keep up with disruptive edits, undo them and let the admin look into it. Good day and stay safe!HimuTheEditor (talk) 16:51, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
- @HimuTheEditor: Himu, with all due respect, I came here for an admin's intervention. Considering your previous edits and the fact that I myself have reported you to Serge in order to get you to stop, I don't need your advice, and so for you to take on this tone of trying to be helpful as if I'm a newbie who doesn't know how to handle undoing disruptive edits by an editor and did not already do what you've just so graciously recommended is ridiculous. Please refrain from attempting to intervene on Serge's behalf if I've left a message here. You're not an admin and you've quite recently made edits overstuffing track listings yourself. Thanks. Ss112 05:52, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- With most of the violations being somewhat minor and spread apart over time, I don't think I can rationalize taking any immediate action, but I think I'll do one of my "I'm getting complaints and your on my radar now" talks and escalate from there as needed. Altwire
Hello, My name is Derek Oswald and I am the Editor In Chief for Altwire. I stumbled across a discussion you had back in 2018 discussing some doubt as to whether or not we were a reliable source for reviews, and at the time you were leaning towards staying away from using us as a source. I wanted to speak with you to see how we may be able to update and improve Altwire, to be truly trusted on Wikipedia as a valid source. We are willing to make changes to our site as necessary to assist with this.
To help alleviate one of your concerns I saw listed from 2018, we do not accept user submitted content. I am aware our previous wording on the site made that ambiguous, but this is not the case. All contributors are employed writers on the website. Additionally, all articles are ran by me for final approval. I have complete editorial oversight as to what is published.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Regards, Derek Oswald Senior Editor In Chief Altwire 174.60.40.135 (talk) 02:00, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well, it's generally considered a bit of a conflict of interest for an editor of one's own website to push for days website's use, and it's not really the job of a Wikipedia Admin to coach a website on it. But I can outline a bunch of the criteria we look at and if your website fare better in future discussions, so be it. Just respond again before I start - sometimes I write out an entire explanation and get the impression that people never come back to actually read it. Need help in an article
Hi again, I know it's Christmas time and you might not be able to reply any soon but its' okay. But for whenever you see. So, I'm having this issue while editing an article Violet Evergarden, it has a movie named "Violet Evergarden: the Movie", the article capitalizes "t" in it making it "Violet Evergarden: The Movie". The movie's official poster uncapitalizes "t" and on top of that Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles#Capital letters also states clearly to not capitalize (a, an, the) unless they're the first or the last letter in the title and it only makes sense to uncapitlize t. Could you please help me with that? an editor recently unedited it providing link to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles#Capital letters which only favors to uncapitlize "t". To avoid any edit war woth the editor who undid my edit, can you please tell me if to capitalize or to not capitalize. Thank you and Merry Christmas in advance. HimuTheEditor (talk) 14:12, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- So, I've had a hard time thinking of examples, but I believe that if there is a colon (:), then the T is still capitalized. So, for example, something like "Sonic the Hedgehog" is correct, but also something like "Mario: The Movie" would also be correct. Sergecross73 msg me 23:08, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Sockpuppet patterns
Do you have any experience opening sockpuppet investigations? I've never had to do this before. Just some observations since I was curious after the 5th rando showed up at Talk:Star_Ocean_(video_game)#Making_"Star_Ocean:_First_Departure"_its_own_page.
- User:AquilaXIII, who did not participate in the discussion (yet), is the oldest account and appears to be the master.
- User:KumaPanda has also not participated in this discussion yet but also appears part of the sock network.
- AquilaXIII, User:Alexaclova112330, and User:JAMendoza all showed support in a move discussion started by User:Suriwashi at Talk:Cassette_tape#Requested_move_18_August_2021. They also all edit often in physical recording media topics.
- AquilaXIII and Alexaclova112330 both posted on Talk:MD Data, an extremely low pageview page, in short succession.
- AquilaXIII, JAMendoza, User:DinosaurPlaneteer, Alexaclova112330, KumaPanda, and Suriwashi all show editing history in Japanese and Korean culture topics.
- AquilaXIII, Alexaclova112330, and KumaPanda (and User:192.223.242.21, fwiw) all supported in Talk:South_Korean_animation#Requested_move_26_February_2020.
- User:FlyingChancla, KumaPanda, and Alexaclova112330 share editing history in porn-related topics.
- AquilaXIII, JAMendoza, and KumaPanda all participated in support at Talk:Ages_of_consent_in_North_America/Archive_2#Merger_proposal.
- AquilaXIII and DinosaurPlaneteer share editing history in progressive American politics topics.
Wow, this turned into more evidence than I thought, huh? The patterns just kept appearing when I started looking into it. This user appears to recruit more and more of their sockpuppets as needed when a talk page proposal starts not to go their way. This... feels very open and shut. There might be more accounts than these but these are the ones I found with just a little looking. Axem Titanium (talk) 05:02, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Axem Titanium - That's actually how a bunch of my SPI reports have gone. I start with a suspicion, and by the time I layout all the evidence like that, I have to rewrite my intro because my stance has become much more strong on the matter. I think what you've compiled would make for a good SPI report. If you do one, I'll comment that I support it too. (If I wasn't WP:INVOLVED I probably would have just WP:DUCK blocked them, but since I'm actively arguing against what they're doing right now, I'd prefer another Admin carry out the potential blocks. They might be able to do a check user to find some other ones too.) Sergecross73 msg me 14:31, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Quick review: AquilaXIII and KumaPanda are likely stale for checkuser. However, the topic overlap seems pretty obvious even at the briefest contribution review. Would recommend opening a SPI, as blocking the older accounts will be based on behaviorial. The active ones may possibly end up checkuser confirmed. I have NOT looked yet though. Suriwashi in particular needs reviewed as a much heavier account that's causing some degree of disruption, having become active just after AquilaXIII was abandoned after a minor conflict with Smuckola (My reading of the situation). My gut feel is that Suriwashi was a deliberate account switch and the rest are being used as supporting puppets. -- ferret (talk) 14:58, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ferret I was literally collecting diffs and just about to make a SPI page for Aquila when I noticed that the banned user banner appeared on their contributions page. So thanks for saving me the effort of finishing that up! Axem Titanium (talk) 06:56, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)@Axem Titanium and Sergecross73: I found time to run checkuser. As suspected, AquilaXIII is stale. I didn't bother looking at KumaPanda, or the IPv4, both are far too stale. However, Suriwashi is confirmed to DinosaurPlaneteer, FlyingChancla, JAMendoza, Alexaclova112330. I've blocked all five along with AquilaXIII and KumaPanda. -- ferret (talk) 06:58, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Sockpuppet of User:BlaccCrab
Hey Serge. I'm not sure I've ever reported one of User:BlaccCrab's sockpuppets to you, but Yayareabomb is definitely one. BlaccCrab was an editor of hip hop articles a few years ago with a terrible attitude who couldn't help insulting people who reverted their unsourced edits. They were also a big Ty Dolla Sign and Dierks Bentley fan, as evidenced by their edits under BlaccCrab starting articles for both musicians' work. In my experience, it's quite rare to come across a hip hop editor who also cares about country artists, and here we have Yayareabomb uploading a cover art for a Ty Dolla Sign song soon after registering (and without using the Upload Wizard, so definitely not a newbie) and editing Bentley's articles [11], [12]. One of BlaccCrab's main occupations was deciding what was a single versus what was a "promotional" single, and he got into quite a few heated exchanges with myself and other editors over it, like here. Look at who's reclassifying singles years after they've been released but Yayareabomb [13]. Also, BlaccCrab had exactly the same reaction to people leaving messages on their talk page as Yayareabomb does... [14]. Also, quite weirdly, Yayareabomb corrected the grammar on Tim96144's user page [15], which, when I think about it, does seem like something BlaccCrab would do. BlaccCrab also extensively edited Gucci Mane discography, and it was one of the last things they argued about before their block [16], [17]... now Yayareabomb is racking up the edits to it too [18], [19], [20]. The attitude and exact same use of phrases like "it literally is" in edit summaries when reverting editors is exactly the same. Ss112 23:15, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- I dont think it's quite enough for a DUCK block, but it is close. I encourage you to open an SPI case to get more eyes on it. (You've already done a lot of the legwork for difs anyways, so may as well.) Sergecross73 msg me 21:03, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

User:Morce Library
Hi Serge. The user Morce Library is a hip hop music editor who was blocked for a week earlier in December for making disruptive edits, including changing quotes. They're up to the same shenanigans again: Changing quotes, changing quotes ×2, citing a dead source to claim it calls an album a genre that it doesn't, removing credited songwriters for no reason, removing more songwriters as well as removing parts of quotes they evidently don't like....and that's just what I've looked at so far. All their edits are like this. It appears they've learned nothing. I pinged the previous blocking admin, Spencer, who recommended I file an ANI report so as to get another admin to assess their behaviour, so in lieu of posting at Drama Central, would you be able to take a look and block if you think it's appropriate? Thanks. Ss112 16:08, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.

- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
Need help
Hi serge, I'm having some issues here, could you please help me.
1). I made this adding all_music, all_lyrics in track listing not knowing that all_writing includes both music and lyrics on the article Blood Harmony where user Ss112 corrected me [21], I understood and followed it since, but now they're pointing me out for the same thing they told me on the page on one of my older edits [22], and aside from that they tell me there should always be headline, but click here and see, "Smile" and "Yeah!" album don't use it, it is just like creating hyperlink for every word on the page and increasing article's size. The section is specifically for Soundtrack only and below one is for Score so i don't understand the need for unnecessary text.
2). Look here, Hyde (musician), and Fred Again, see how it mentions their stylized name in brackets? I did the same for A Shape of Light, and added full/original name and they reverted it, I don't know understand if there's not full name how would readers ever get to know the original name published? I did made a mistake in info box changing "A Shape of Light" to "a shape of light" which I accept and won't repeat. But isn't adding the full/stylized name correct in brackets?
3). At last, Red Swan. I removed Hyde from instrumental track's name and they re-added it even though Hyde is not featured on the instrumental track and for the note, I don't see a need for note, isn't (feat.), (Instrumental) et cetera part of song title? and note has it's own downsides like you cannot add (A) [B] as they'd appear as ((A) [B]), and I couldn't find a single place on Wikipedia stating the use of note like this and separating phrases like feat. from song title, please provide me an appropriate link for that where I can see it clearly. - Himu, firstly, you're acting as if I reverted your edit involving the all_writing thing on Cars 3. I didn't. As for headline=, you have had this explained to you before. Template:Track listing clearly explains one is needed for accessibility. This is regardless of whether there is a section header already introducing it as a track listing or not. I've previously told you this and linked you to the accessibility talk page discussion where editors agreed in 2020 to include headlines in tables even in instances where they're considered redundant. How many times does an editor have to explain something to you before you stop doing it? This is exhausting. This is how editors get blocked, because their edits become disruptive when they refuse to get it. Stop messing around with the headline= parameter if you don't get it or don't like it.
- Secondly, on that article, you didn't mention A Shape of Light as being stylised. You simply stylised the title in all instances in the infobox and lead. We don't need to denote stylisations in parentheses either. If it's the same title—regardless of the cases of letters used—readers are going to be able to recognise it. Readers are not going to suddenly become unable to recognise "a shape of light" is the same thing as the un-stylised "A Shape of Light".
- Thirdly, no, "featuring" and "instrumental" are not part of track titles. You are coming to Serge and asking him to provide you with examples to not do things when this was a dispute I had with your edits, where you are again making the same edits I (and Serge) asked you to stop making before. This wasn't necessary to bring here. Ss112 01:27, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, haven't had the chance to review this all yet. Sergecross73 msg me 04:21, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Demo track listings on Limp Bizkit discography
Hi Serge. I noticed following your edit on Limp Bizkit discography that the demo albums have the full track listings listed below them. Do you think this should be removed? I'm leaning towards yes—it seems extraneous. If they were particularly important they'd have articles where these tracks could be listed. Ss112 03:17, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I see the problems on there go deeper than just these demos being listed....being bold and reverting most of it. Ss112 03:19, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, I almost did the same thing myself, honestly. Kinda wondered if it was once merged from an AFD discussion on one of the bands demos or something, because as you say, track lists don't belong there. But as you say, it's all entirely unsourced and not well done, so may as well delete. Sergecross73 msg me 04:25, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
