Surnames

hi - having trouble navigating

Thanks for the welcome. I am having trouble finding my way around. I am a biologist and would prefer to edit bio articles. I went to preferences but it didn't give me an option to choose what kind of articles I edit and I get random ones when I get into editing. Also I am having trouble finding my way back to editing... from here if I click on edit, it just wants me to edit this page. Thanks for the help! a couple more questions

Thanks for your prompt and friendly response to my questions. I am now working my way through the tutorial. I'm particularly interested in links and references right now... It's not intuitively obvious to me yet how to construct them but I will reread it all in a minute and have a go in the sandbox. My question now is: I have written pages on a lot of organisms for helium.com - may I reference my own writing on a subject?

I am not a specialist, although my field is roughly evolutionary ecology - how species have evolved together in particular ecosystems. I have worked as a marine biologist (mudworms in oysters) but have also attempted a PhD in Avian Ecology and spent time studying soil insects on the tundra, seals and penguins on remote islands and the flora and fauna of my own property in northern New South Wales, although I am currently living near Cairns. I have also been a wildlife rescuer and carer for many years and specialize in raptor rehabilitation. To earn a crust, I have been a science and marine studies teacher for the past twenty years but am reinventing myself these days for a company that requires articles about herpes simplex... my boss said to get on wiki and become an editor first to establish my credibility before turning my hand to writing articles for him.

meanings of nicknames

I came to Australia in 1975 - born in Oregon, high school in California, Universities in Canada, NZ, Alaska and then a job in Aus. I love Aussie slang... during the depression, the itinerant unemployed 'blokes' who wandered around looking for work carried their belongings wrapped up in their bed rolls and these were called their swags... when they went 'walkabout' they were said to be 'humping their swags' (no sexual allusion there in those days) and they were called swaggies. I have been wandering around most of my life and now I like to wander around the Great Barrier reef whenever possible - hence the nick Reefswaggie. What I like about it is that I have never come across it anywhere else - like yours, I am sure, its unique so I don't have to be reefswaggie12 or something :)... oh have you heard the aussie song Waltzing Matilda? the first line is Once a Jolly Swagman camped beside a billabong, under the shade of a Coolabah tree... cheers from down undah, 58.165.109.175 (talk) 06:23, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

my first serious edit

Hi again,

I chose a random article on Grise Fiord to edit. Transportation had one sentence and living conditions had none. So I read up on the place to add to what I already know about the high arctic and wrote a few sentences... I managed to put in my first reference but I didn't put any pretty blue links to other wiki sites because I'm not quite sure how to do it yet... maybe I am getting ahead of myself but I find doing it works better for me than trying to read the manual first :) Would you mind reading my effort and letting me know if its ok and how I can make it better? Baird's Trogon edit

Hi again,

I have been away for a few days with other work and now I am trying to edit an article. I have worked my way through the editing tutorial in the sandbox but the reference I tried to add did not come up as a footnote and it didn't come up as a link either. I have looked at the tutorial and back at my effort and I cannot see what I have done wrong. Can you help me please?

a few minutes later: When i went back to the page and clicked on references edit, somehow i managed to change it to a footnote but instead of showing the whole reference, it is just showing a number 1 in the references though it shows it as a [2] in the actual text... but at least the link does work when I click on it! I must admit that I am finding the tutorial a bit hard to understand.

Ok, when I went back again, now the reference is showing correctly below the reference line, so maybe I am just not giving it enough time? I have now added a link to a flickr photo and so far it is not showing correctly so i guess i will go back and see if it has changed since i last looked. NO, I think what happened is that you went and made the change by adding <nowiki> before and after the text and the link. I will try that with the flickr ref now too.

nope now its saying i cannot edit it except in source mode... confusing :(

Do I just continue here to continue this conversation or do I start a new line? Whatever - I am here now :) I went to the VE page and found out how to get out of VE when I do things. I also found that uploading flickr photos is not as straightforward as I thought, so I will get more experience first. What I did finally 'grok' this morning was the ease of adding internal links using double brackets... I thought at first I had to somehow provide the actual link so that's a relief that if the page exists in wiki, it can find it without me giving directions. The other important thing that I learned was that it will tell me in red if the page doesn't exist yet. I experimented with internal links in an article about a French commune. I am trying to stick to science related subjects as I troll through random articles because that is where my expertise lies (I skip articles on sport and media personalities!). What I also want to do is become a writer for wikipedia. I have some experience with internet writing, mainly at helium.com where I have written over 200 articles, mostly biological. (I consider myself to be the 'worm queen' because I have written articles on every type of worm most ppl can think of and a few that almost nobody has ever heard of... :)

It's called de:Vorlage:DNB and clearly has a similar function but links a databank at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek or German National Library. It's intended for books that are pre-ISBN. Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I've been appreciating your kind input when I post new films and I accidentally posted a film that you'd already done, Tillie Wakes Up, not realizing that you'd already done a page on that film under Tillie Wakes Up. Meanwhile, others had added an infobox to my new version and so forth. When I discovered your page a little while ago (I think you created it but I'm not 100% sure now that I think of it, I don't know if I scrolled down far enough to check), I took the liberty of purloining the Synopsis and adding that to my mirror page then it occurred to me to post everything on your original page so that you can take mine down or whatever you'd like to do, revert it to your original one, delete the second one, or keep whatever you want and delete whatever you'd like however you like. The main thing is that I want you to know that the last thing I'd ever want to do is intrude on your work, it was a stupid accident on my part that I somehow made, and I apologize. More Tillie

I think we'd be better served with Tillie Wakes Up as the simpler version of the title, without the year being built in, simply because it's such a strange title that I can't imagine another version of it being made, although of course W.C. Fields did re-use the title of the great classic Tillie's Punctured Romance so maybe it's not impossible. On the other hand, I'm eager to defer to whomever created the first version and, out of deference toward the first writer, I'm fine with using the first version of the title. I'll happily leave it up to you, either way seems perfectly fine. Thanks for the superb compliment, by the way, I really appreciate that! More an opera/theatre guy I see. Well, I also generally found the Roger Moore films more enjoyable to watch, so did my father, but as Bond, of course, Connery is my favourite. Dr. No, Goldfinger and OHMSS rank among my favourites though, and I really disliked Moonraker! There aren't many films I can really say "that was a brilliant film". I'd say roughly 30% of films I watch I'd even consider wanting to get it on DVD but I'm happy to have seen most of the films I've watched, there's a lot of films though that you really wouldn't want to see many times. Even Roger Ebert only saw most films once or twice every 20 or 30 years bbut then again he had an extreme amount of films to watch. Yes, as Lobo was saying, the Academy almost always go for straightforward, simple, uncontroversial dramas. Oliver! for instance is an enjoyable film and good, but to think that it is a better picture than something like Rosemary's Baby or Once Upon a Time in the West of the same year is just silly. I used to hate OHMSS because of Lazenby, but everytime I watch it it grows on me. Lazenby aside I think it was one of the better Bond films. Die Another Day is probably the second worst after View To a Kill IMO. I didn't say either Die Another Day nor View to a Kill were bad films. Every Bond film has been good IMO. Just I would consider them two of the weaker Bond entries, Quantum of Solace too. Man with the Golden Gun is one of my favourites but it's usually one of the worst on people's lists. Agreed completely, Goodnight was one of the worst Bond girls. The film itself wasn't a strong one technically, but Knick Knack and Scaramanga and the exotic Thai location made it thoroughly enjoyable I think and Goodnight and Maud Adams in skimpy bikinis of course didn't harm!. Yeah, that was the strength of Octopussy, the Monsoon Palace and such, even though the circus thing and Karl Marx Stadt wasn't that great. You've not missed anything by not watching Chariots of Fire. Worst Academy Award winner I've seen to date. Nothing but a bunch of Hooray Henrys. The only good thing about it was its music and the famous theme now played at the Olympics and other events. The actors in the film were extremely unbelievable as athletes let along Olympic athletes and I found that I really didn't care if they won or lost. Even the 1924 Olympics looked like it had been shot on the track in somebody's backyard. My feeling is that the soundtrack tricked the Academy to thinking it was a great film, when it really wasn't. Hello. You seem to have added Category:Guggenheim Fellows to the article Jim Olney, a footballer (soccer player) who died in 1944, because someone called James Olney received the Fellowship in 1980. Categorization

I was looking at your contribution list and find we are doing very similar work...only you are categorizing actresses while I'm categorizing male actors. If you are responsible, I am truly impressed...it doesn't matter how small the country is or what century, each one has at least one actress category (and often multiple ones)! It makes my job categorizing male actors so much simpler. I still check each article (because some women have ambiguous names) because there is often no indication what medium the actor works in. Category:Yaruba dynasty

I saw you added this - which I should have done. You put it under Category:Sultans of Oman, which is incorrect. I am not sure how to arrange the related categories. At the time of the Yaruba dynasty Oman was technically a theocracy, with an elected Imam who was both spiritual and temporal leader. In practice, the title of Imam had become inherited. The members of the dynasty were not Sultans - they did not hold that title. They were rulers of the country. Confusingly, several of them had names that included the word "Sultan", but it was a name, not a title, like B.B. King. Later there were rulers who took the title "Sultan of Muscat and Oman" or "Sultan of Oman", but were not Imams. Ghalib Bin Ali was Imam of Oman but not Sultan. Confused? I am. Well, that rules out most of Africa! I've always asserted that the towns and villages we once started were more notable than people think. Just expanded Areza with what I could find. Especially for smaller localities I think, but gradually I think scholars are conducting more research into obscure parts of the world and learning about ethnic groups and localities and practices form the people themselves. The HIstorical Dictionary of Ethiopia + Eritrea 1994 edition for instance has been researched by an Eritrean scholar. All it needs is some of the them to be educated and to do the research and put it in books. Check out this I found earlier [5]. Clift? A bit wet. I enjoy most of his films like From here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun. Suddenly Last Summer etc but John Wayne is a good judge of character and I think he was right about Clift not being an impressive man. Actually looking through Charlton Heston's filmography he didn't appear in too many truly great films either. I've done a basic overview of films I've watched and I'd say that Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Tom Hanks, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergman are among those actors who I enjoy virtually every film they're in, especially Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who I think are my favourite actor/actress. Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart for me stand out as having the most films which were good. I mean can you recall a film with either of them in which wasn't good? They made what were sometimes technically average films good by their charisma and presence. Yeah Powell was one of the reasons why I'm so fond of The Great Ziegfeld which I got up to GA. I like his wit and sarcastic sense of humor. Have you seen Life with Father? Just great.
