GOCE drive has begun
Hello, I just wanted to take a moment and announce that the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive has started, and will run for a month. Thanks for signing up. There's a special prize for most edits on the first day, in case you've got high ambitions. --Diannaa (Talk) 02:36, 1 September 2010 (UTC) |

Hi ɳorɑfʈ and Diannaa, Just a heads up to let you know that I will away for work from tomorrow until next Monday Sept. 6. I will not be taking my laptop with me on this particular trip so I will not be able to get online at all. I will do an update of the graphs on Thursday/Friday, and then again when I return. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 07:12, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- Ok. I can keep an eye on things until Saturday the 4th. I will be returning on Monday Sept 13, but will get home too late to update the numbers. Noraft, are you available to give us a hand with the chart? --Diannaa (Talk) 14:58, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
- It's only Sunday we have to worry about then. Hopefully someone can update it. Otherwise, I should be able to in the later part of Sunday. - S Masters (talk) 09:49, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- We want it updated somewhere around midnight London time. It doesn't have to be exactly then, though, as the total doesn't change that much hour by hour. --Diannaa (Talk) 20:13, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'll be around. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 02:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Out of retirement
I thought I would let you know that I've decided to return to Wikipedia, only in a semi-retired state instead of completely retired. Life has somewhat settled down for me, and since I'm ditching pre-calculus I'll have a little more free time on my hands. Want to help Wiki with editing work...
Dear SMasters - I am Sourav and live in India. I am in service and have been a frequent visitor to Wiki to seek and increase my knowledge base. I came across the appeal "GOCE Drive to Eliminate Backlog" and got interested. I would like to help with atleast one article a day. Can you please let me know how to get started?
Thanks, Sourav email2sourav@gmail.com

GOCE newsletter
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36. Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated. Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies. Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on. This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK, and The Raptor Let's talk. |

SMasters, thanks for taking the time to copyedit Motul de San José, I appreciate it was a long article! All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 09:20, 19 September 2010 (UTC) |
- Thanks so much! I really enjoyed the article. Good luck with the GA! - S Masters (talk) 13:25, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
Lincoln edit
Thanks so much for your help with AL. FYI, I have stopped any editing until you have done your thing. Sorry for causing the confusion with the tag. Thanks again ! Carmarg4 (talk) 13:08, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, I got confused. :-) OK. Due to the length of the article being over 10K words, it will take me at least a couple of days to complete the edit. I will put the tag on whenever I am working on it, and I will remove it if I stop. I always put a note of where I'm up to in the article's history, so you can see where I'm up to. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 13:31, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- You're the CE ! The only other thing I could do would be to ask if you could fix it so the rebels win the war; but I don't think that's in the cards (nor should it be.) Very grateful. Carmarg4 (talk) 13:46, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- Haha LOL. I don't change any facts. Just pure straightforward copyediting. ;-) - S Masters (talk) 14:02, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I notice you're editing the Lincoln article, but I think you need to reconsider some of your edits and brush up on the manual of style. For example this breaches MOS:DASH which states that mdashes should be unspaced; oddly enough you elected not to space the other mdash in the same sentence. If you're going to copy edit articles, you need to have a working understanding of MOS; of course there's so much it's difficult to stay on top, but consistency is one of the underlying themes and the edit wasn't even consistent with the rest of that sentence. I also noticed that you've been swapping spelt out numbers for numerals with inadequate edit summaries (eg: 1 2 3); WP:ORDINAL (part of the manual of style) states that "numbers greater than nine are commonly rendered in numerals, or in words if they are expressed in one or two words". Nev1 (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments. I am well aware of WP:MOS and try to edit for compliance. I usually use a script to fix dashes at the very end of a full article edit, however, I am not finished with the article yet, so I ask for your patience. I am also well aware of MOS:NUM: I'm not sure what you mean by "inadequate edit summaries" as I stated in the first two edits that it is for WP:MOS compliance. The third, I had put "copyedit" in the summary as there were several changes. As the article is very long, I have not been saving for each single edit and putting in an edit summary. Rather, I am editing section by section at a time. I am around halfway through the major article edit. If there are any other additional fixes at the end, such as for consistency, I will do these when I have completed the full article–and will scan the article for these. Cheers. - S Masters (talk) 00:22, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- I would be shocked if a CE wasn't accompanied by a critique, and this just makes your guild stronger of course. It IS a long article and I thank you for the time and effort, Pal. Carmarg4 (talk) 01:49, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
