Hey,

As I just sent in an email to User:DeltaQuad, we probably need a more long-term solution since I'm not really active on IRC or SPI anymore... but I've given him access to the project so that at least one of the SPI regulars can access it. --Rschen7754 04:26, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Recent software changes

Problems

  • MediaWiki was reverted to the previous version on February 4. It was because of a performance issue. It was restored later. [2]
  • UploadWizard was broken on February 4 because of the revert of MediaWiki. [3]
  • All sites were broken for 30 minutes on February 5. It was due to a network problem. [4]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 11 (calendar).
  • You can have one user page for all wikis. Your Meta user page will show if you don't have a user page on a wiki. You can test this tool on test wikis. [5] [6] [7]
  • You can search for media files in VisualEditor more easily. Images are bigger and you see the size and license. [8] [9]
  • It is easier to review your changes when you save the page in VisualEditor. The window is wider. [10]
  • You can read the latest news about VisualEditor. You can now join weekly meetings with developers. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The first meeting is on February 11 at 20:00 (UTC).

Future changes

  • Administrators will soon be able to delete change tags used fewer than 5,000 times. [11]
  • In the future you will be able to have personal lists of articles on the mobile site. [12]

Interstate 8 image

Hello, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I'm not actually sure what the protocol is for the permission in this situation. I've had it on here for years (7, wow!) and this is the first time I've heard someone questioning it. If you want to nominate it for deletion, that will help with finding out if there's consensus. I have a few other he let me use, so curious what would be the result. I'd say definitely remove it from the article for now. I can probably take a more current image from that same vantage point sometime in the future, but can't guarantee anytime soon. @Nehrams2020: The "proper" way to do it is by having the person who took the picture sending a release to OTRS (see [13] for more info. Unfortunately, I don't think it would survive a deletion request at Commons otherwise. Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 17. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 18 (calendar).
  • On Wednesday your Meta user page will be shown if you don't have a user page on a wiki. [14] [15] [16]
  • You can now change the order of categories in VisualEditor using drag-and-drop. [17]
  • In VisualEditor, you now need to make a change before you can "Apply Changes" to citations and templates. [18]
  • The way the cursor moves in VisualEditor is changing. Your browser now handles the cursor directly. Most of you will see no change. In right-to-left text, the cursor now moves in a 'visible' rather than 'logical' way. This is like other sites but you may be surprised at first.​ [19]

Meetings

  • The VisualEditor Team had their first public bug triage meeting on February 11. They will post the results on the meeting page. [20]
  • You can join the second weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on February 18 at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join. [21]

I agree that it should be referred to BASC. Unfortunately, I don't remember much beyond that I was involved somehow in the case, and alerted en.wikinews to the situation. --Rschen7754 22:10, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
BASC is getting tired. There was even a proposal to abolish BASC. Rather than go into a deep investigation, I can see the argument for simply declining the unblock. Can you think of any reason not to? Not sure this is really your issue, but you were kind enough to respond. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 22:12, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 25. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 26 (calendar).
  • It is now easier to see template fields in VisualEditor. The fields are bigger. [27]
  • It is now easier to see when a button is disabled in VisualEditor. [28]
  • Sometimes when you copy-pasted a template in VisualEditor, it was replaced by HTML. This problem is now fixed. [29]
  • Tools in Labs will stop working for a few hours on February 24. [30]

  • You can use the Content Translation tool on Wikipedia in Uzbek and Minangkabau. You need to enable it in your Beta options.
  • You can now hide banners if you don't have an account. [33] [34]

Recent changes

  • You can now create books on almost all wikis. It doesn't work yet on wikis using the language converter. [43] [44]
  • VisualEditor had problems with categories in Safari. It sometimes moved or removed the categories. The issue is now fixed. [45] [46] [47]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since March 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 11 (calendar).
  • In VisualEditor the "Edit beta" button is now called "Edit" on the English Wikipedia. [48] [49]
  • The feedback tool in VisualEditor now looks like the other tools. It also asks for information about your browser to help fix bugs. [50] [51]
  • You now see the VisualEditor toolbar even if the rest of the page is still loading. [52] [53]
  • You now see more information when you edit a link, a reference or other items in VisualEditor. You also see a clearer edit button in those tools. [54] [55]
  • If you use the ContentTranslation tool you now see red links in the list of articles in other languages. The link is red if the article doesn't exist in the language of your options or of your browser. You can translate the article by clicking on the red link.

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since March 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 24. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 25 (calendar).
  • The text of a reference is now more visible when you click on it. It has a blue background. Many wikis already have the blue color. Those wikis can now remove it from their CSS page. [71]
  • VisualEditor is now much faster. For many users it is now at least as fast as the wikitext editor. [72] [73] [74]
  • When you add a list of references in VisualEditor, you now see it right away. You can still change its group by editing it. [75]

Global account

Hello,

I am the owner of the french Wikipédia account "Io'. You recently left a message to the english wikipedia account "Io" because it is inactive. I've juste been advised that, due to the global accound policy, my account could be renamed automaticaly if others "Io" acount have more contributions. I am a teacher/researcher and i drive a collective work with students on wikipedia since 2013 (i publish about wikipedia since 2006). So i realy need to keep the pseudo 'Io', even if i dont have a lot of direct contributions 'my students have created lot of pages). Please, could you rename the english "io" account as it is inactive to left me keep the nickname "io" and make it global ?

Hello, i've just seen that you weren't connected since the 15 march. So i must conclude that you did not create the global account "Io", perhaps it's been an automatic procedure. So, i'm very sorry for the precedent message i left you..please forgive my wrong reading of the situation. So i hope you will connect soon and consider my arguments. I have about 200 students which pages contains the link to my user account "Io", it would realy be a problem if i had to change it.

  • VisualEditor sometimes showed empty warnings for wikis using Flagged Revisions. This is now fixed on all wikis. [117]
  • You can get the new version of the Wikipedia app for iOS. With it you can share facts with your friends. [118]
  • If you write JavaScript, you should stop using importScript and importStylesheet. [119]

Wikibreak

I'm on an extended sabbatical from Wikimedia for a few months to take care of real-life matters. I'm hoping to be back around May or June. I may come by and check on things, but I cannot guarantee a timely response. --Rschen7754 02:04, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

California State Route 125

Hello! I noticed that the length of California State Route 125 has been changed to 23.838. If possible, could you please update the "length reference" data field in the highway infobox? Thank you! AndyHe829 (talk) 16:47, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Sockpuppet investigation block opened

You were recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Sockpuppet investigation block. Given the legal, privacy and BLP implications of holding the case in public the Committee has decided to run the case completely in camera, to that effect there will be no public evidence submission or workshop. Editors with direct knowledge of the events and related evidence are requested to email their to arbcom-en-b@lists.wikimedia.org by May 7, 2015 which is when evidence submission will close. Well, I'm now a burned out ex-steward, so welcome to the club (or maybe it's the other way around...) anyway, I was a bit unhappy with how the case was handled (there was a lot that went on behind the scenes after that SPI was closed, for several months). One question. "The final portion of the present-day Orange Freeway was not completed until the mid 1970s. The last piece of SR 57 to be added was formerly part of I-210, after SR 210 was extended to San Bernardino in 1998." So, the Orange Freeway and SR 57 aren't identical. But: "California State Route 57 (SR 57), also known as the Orange Freeway" ... for most of its length? - Dank (push to talk) 23:14, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
According to page 115 of [128] the Orange Freeway is from SR 1 (the unconstructed part) to CA-60, so it would be "for most of its length". (Which raises the question of why it's not in the article, of course... it's the one FA of mine that hasn't been updated recently, but I'm hoping to get to it soon, especially now that it is TFA). --Rschen7754 01:24, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Recent changes

  • You can now make charts and maps on your wiki with the new "graph" tool. If you have an old browser, you will see images instead. It uses a tool called Vega; you can learn how to use it and write help pages for your wiki. You can use the Vega edit tool to make charts and copy the code to your wiki. Charts and maps use complex code and you should put them into templates. In the future, you will be able to create charts with VisualEditor. [145] [146] [147]
  • You can apply for technical jobs to develop tools for the community. [148]
  • The logos of all wikis are now in a new place. It will make pages load faster. You can still ask to change the logo. You can also use local CSS for brief changes. [149] [150]

Problems

  • There was a problem that caused slow editing. [151]
  • Pages were sometimes removed from your watchlist in VisualEditor. This problem is now fixed. [152]

  • You can now use data from Wikidata on more pages. The page doesn't need to be linked to the Wikidata item. It works on a few wikis and more wikis will be added soon. [153] [154]
  • You should get fewer errors when you add files to Commons. [155]
  • When you use an external link to link to a wiki page, VisualEditor now converts it to a wiki link. [156]
  • When you add a link in VisualEditor, you see pages that match what you type. It is now easier to see where they match. [157]

Hello. It's Jennifer, an editor of Houston Chronicle. Seen that this free encyclopedia is full of inaccurate information and many pages contains spelling mistakes, I've decided to be a Wikipedia's member. It doesn't seem as smooth site and it appears as an arduous online magazine. Yesterday I contacted an adept contributor named User:Dougweller, nevertheless it'd be very favourable if you could give few advice.
