  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf3) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since 9 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from 14 October, and on all Wikipedias from 16 October (calendar).
  • 5% of logged-out readers are getting pages from servers that run the HHVM tool. HHVM should make pages load faster. You can also test it as a Beta Feature. [5]

  • Developers fixed a security problem. If you use Internet Explorer 6, you won't be able to log in any more. You should use a newer browser. [12]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf4) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 16. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from October 21, and on all Wikipedias from October 23 (calendar).

  • There was an issue with files from Commons on October 21. You could only see those with names between 140 and 159 characters by visiting Commons itself. [16]
  • There was a problem with cut and paste in VisualEditor in Firefox. It was fixed quickly. [17]
  • There was a problem with editing math in VisualEditor. It was fixed quickly. [18]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will now come to Wikipedia sites every Wednesday, instead of every Thursday. [19]
  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf5) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 23. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from October 28, and on all Wikipedias from October 29 (calendar).
  • VisualEditor now uses autovalues for templates if they are in TemplateData. [20] [21] [22]
  • VisualEditor's menu items now show their shortcuts beside them. [23]
  • VisualEditor now opens faster when you click "edit". [24]
  • The rules for plurals in translations changed in some languages. Interface translations are currently not being updated from translatewiki.net; this process will start again on November 6. [25]

spi clerk question

Some time back I applied for a clerk trainee position. You and Callenecc declined the application, with a stated reason of my sanction on the area of gun control. [26] Out of curiosity, if that had not been an issue, can you say what your opinion would have been? If my sanction is lifted in the future, do you think the black mark of it would still be a barrier? Gaijin42 (talk) 15:00, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

It's difficult to say without taking a closer look at your editing profile, which I don't have time to do at the moment. A few things I will say though: 1) non-admins do have more obstacles, simply because they can't block and that decreases their usefulness as a clerk, 2) as far as being able to work with others and level of trust, the bar is fairly close to RFA (having a clerk that can't work with other clerks or CUs is a huge drag on the team), and 3) I was sanctioned by ArbCom several years ago, and still was accepted as a clerk, but there were quite a few years that went by between those two events, and I was also an admin. But you would need to demonstrate that the issues that led to the sanction were resolved, and that you wouldn't somehow use your clerk position to unduly benefit your article editing in some way. --Rschen7754 04:56, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

Problems

  • There was a bug in VisualEditor with Internet Explorer. It hid tools like the link editor when you opened them. The bug was fixed on Monday. [30]
  • Issues with the new search tool caused geo data code to show up on pages on Monday and Friday. The mobile "nearby" tool was also broken. The problem is now fixed. [31] [32] [33]
  • HHVM caused server issues on Thursday. They are now fixed.

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf5) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since October 29. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 4, and on all Wikipedias from November 5 (calendar).
  • Some wikis have icons at the top of a page to show if it is protected or featured. Icons show up using CSS. You can now use the <indicator> tag in these templates instead to add the icons. [34] [35]
  • VisualEditor now tells you if you're editing a re-used reference. This helps you avoid changing it if you just want to add a new one. [36]
  • The icons in VisualEditor's template editor tool for adding more fields are back, along with other fixes. [37] [38] [39] [40] [41]
  • After November 6, all wikis will have the tool to edit TemplateData. [42] [43] [44]

Future changes

  • The new search tool will come to the last wikis in the coming weeks. This includes Wikipedia in French, Chinese, German and English. [45]

  • You may see a new tool on the mobile site of the English Wikipedia. It asks simple questions to make the article better. In the future, your answers will go to Wikidata. [46] [47]
  • The MediaWiki API now shows information in a nice format. You can translate it in translatewiki.net. [48]

  • Wikimedia Labs was broken for a few hours on Thursday. It was due to a hardware problem. [49]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf7) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 11, and on all Wikipedias from November 12 (calendar).
  • You can now use more editing tools for tables in VisualEditor. You can add rows and columns, merge cells, and edit table captions. [50] [51]
  • The style and insert menus in the toolbar of VisualEditor now show fewer tools. This helps you see the most common tasks. You can see all items by clicking "More". [52]
  • The way windows inside VisualEditor work has changed. VisualEditor should be faster and have fewer bugs. [53]

  • The tool to track bugs will change on November 21.

ArbCom questions

I withdrew from the elections after a health/stress surprise, but I'm still interested in your opinion of me for the role. I realized my personality isn't ready yet for such a stressful role, especially after doing a terrible block while under stress from IRL.   • The move from Bugzilla to Phabricator is done. You can now report bugs in Phabricator. [56]

Problems

  • There was a problem when editing tables in VisualEditor. VisualEditor was trying to fix bad values for the colspan or rowspan option. VisualEditor now leaves the bad values to avoid making things worse. This was fixed on November 17. [57]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf9) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since November 19. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from November 25, and on all Wikipedias from November 26 (calendar).
  • You will be able to try VisualEditor on many new wikis for the first time. After November 26, VisualEditor will become available on Wikidata, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews wikis. You can find it in your Beta options. [58]
  • VisualEditor now tells you if your edit needs to be approved. [59]
  • You can now use VisualEditor's tools directly when you resume editing after closing the save window. [60]
  • VisualEditor's table editing tools now work better in right-to-left languages. [61] [62]

SPI

The SPI on Lightbreather was actually suggested by Gorilla Warfare and it may not be nec to publicly release the info but as this was an attempt evade scrutiny and pose as a nuetral commentator arbcom at the very least should be given those results. Bad needs-jctint=no tagging

I've fixed some. The problem with US 259 (and probably others) is that one state uses the templates and the other doesn't. In fact you may have tagged it when Texas was split out. --NE2 12:08, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

  • You may see a new tool tested on the mobile site of the English Wikipedia. It asks simple questions to make the article better. In the future, your answers will go to Wikidata. [78]

  • You can test a new version of the Content Translation tool.

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki (1.25wmf12) has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since December 10. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from December 16. It will be on all Wikipedias from December 17 (calendar). [80]
  • You can now find and replace text in VisualEditor. You can open the tool via the menu, Ctrl+F or Cmd+F. [81]
  • VisualEditor now doesn't change the space at the end of a text that you make bold. [82]
  • The "Apply changes" button in the reference window of VisualEditor is now disabled until you make a change. [83]

Freeway exit template

Hello Rschen7754! How are you doing? I noticed the exit list parts in many freeway articles have been replaced with a so called Jctint template (formerly they were simply implemented with standard wiki table). I tried to introduce it into Chinese Wikipedia but it seems that a lot of templates are associated the Jctint and the template structure behind it is way too complex for me to understand. Is there a guideline for me to introduce the whole Jctint template system to another wiki? Thank you! AndyHe829 (talk) 22:07, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

From what I know, I would think that it would be a matter of copying over the module pages (@Happy5214:) I've thought about stuff like this as part of the m:USRD initiative, but then got sidetracked with other matters - maybe this is something that needs to be revisited in the future. --Rschen7754 05:14, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
The three main modules are Module:Jcttop/core, Module:Jctint/core, and Module:Jctbtm. There are dependencies on Module:Arguments and Module:Road data/RJL types. Translate the strings when necessary. The templates all depend on those modules, with {{jcttop/core}}, {{jctint/core}}, and {{jctbtm}} simply calling the respective modules. Most of the other RJL templates just act as wrappers around the first two templates. You probably just need {{jctint}}, {{jcttop}}, {{jctbridge}}, the three module-calling templates, and the modules themselves to start. -happy5214 17:38, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

State highways

Hello! In Numbered highways in the United States, state highways appear to be a system that is independent from interstate highways and U.S. routes. I assume state highways refer to those with name "California State Route xxx". However, in all state highway articles, like State highways in California and Texas state highways, interstate highways and U.S. routes are also categorized as the "state highway". I am a little bit confused by this. Could you please let me know some about this? AndyHe829 (talk) 01:55, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

I can only speak to how California handles this; they tell me other states are similar, but I don't know that for sure. According to the official route definitions, there is no difference between an Interstate, a U.S. Route, or a State Route, so technically all of them are state highways, and are generally maintained by Caltrans. The Federal Highway Administration does not maintain roads directly. --Rschen7754 02:21, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

  • The "Save page" button in the VisualEditor toolbar is now blue rather than green. This is the same as on the mobile site. [110]
  • You can now edit pages on the draft namespace with VisualEditor on the Russian Wikipedia and Hebrew Wikipedia. You can ask to get VisualEditor for a namespace on your wiki. When your community agrees, ask in Phabricator. [111] [112]
