Languages and Tambayan

Hi! I just wanted to say hello to a fellow Filipino. I couldn't help notice that you know Spanish and Chinese? do you like languages. You also have links to interpreters? I am very interested in becoming one although I'm a bit old. I used to interpret Japanese. I would like to encourage you to explore interlingua. Also there is a WP:TAMBAY forum for filipinos . You are welcome to participate in the discussions there. Best regards, --Jondel 01:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Goldfish contributions

Hello. Good job on all the updates to the goldfish articles. Let me just throw a few of my two cents at you while you're at it.

  1. It would be preferable that you use in-line citations for your references, rather than listing the references at the end. This helps differentiate which facts are verifiable and which facts are not, which can be hard to determine when the facts are not cited. In turn, this makes it much easier to edit which facts are purely false and added for the sake of it, and which facts are substantiated by authors. This is especially true for when articles are going towards good article or featured article status. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for more information on the guidelines and templates for citing sources.
  2. Goldfish are part of the WikiProject Aquarium Fishes. Check it out and see if you're interested in joining.

Cheers, and happy editing. MiltonT 03:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Notability

Hi, nice work on many of your recent additions to the fishkeeping area. I am, however, concerned about the notability of the Hikari article and have marked it for a prod.

Hikari (fish food)

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Hikari (fish food), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. MidgleyDJ 08:17, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rodsan - In my view most (all) of the articles on companies producing goods for the fishkeeping industry havent asserted their notability in the article. If notability can't be established (using the guidelines in WP:CORP) the articles are probably not warranted on Wikipedia. Sources needs to cited in the articles to establish the notability of the subject. MidgleyDJ 23:02, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Addition of Qualtiy Fish Food: What Ingredients are Needed for Proper Nutrition, Growth and Health?", an article by Carl Strohmeyer

Hi Rodsan -

It may be better to integrate information from the article you included as an external link into the article on Fish food using appropriate citations rather than including it as an external link. External links should add something unique to the article - beyond content that would be included in the article if it were of a hypothetical featured article status. Hope this helps, sorry to be negative, again :-). See: WP:FOOTNOTES for the method to cite the article in the text (and in the references list). Cheers, David. MidgleyDJ 23:28, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Hikari (fish food)

I've nominated Hikari (fish food), an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Hikari (fish food) satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hikari (fish food) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Hikari (fish food) during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. MidgleyDJ 01:28, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rodsan - my concern is that it does not meet the requirements for inclusion in Wikipedia (listed at WP:CORP). Please feel free to participate in the AfD, if the consensus is to keep the article and notability can be established there wont be a problem. :-). MidgleyDJ 02:00, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

I moved a great deal of the information you posted in Farlowella to a new article Farlowella acus. This is because most of the references you listed seemed to only be discussing F. acus and did not indicate whether or not the information could be applied to the entire genus. Just letting you know.MiltonT 06:08, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Again

Hi Rodsan -

Thanks for all your excellent contributions. One point though, when you add a "reference" to an article you need to cite that reference in the text. Otherwise it isnt clear which pieces of material in the article come from which reference. See WP:CITE, WP:FOOTNOTES and WP:V for information on how to add your citations in text. Cheers, and keep up the good work! :-) David. MidgleyDJ 05:30, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Flag icons for articles (biography infobox) and new stub for United Nations Interpreters

Use the special {{flagicon}} template. You must tell the template using a extra variable, e.g. {{flagicon|England}} which outputs England. See this page for full documentation on flags. As for stub tags, see the list of them at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types. E talk 04:25, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Jacqueline Mitchell

A tag has been placed on Jacqueline Mitchell, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Metropolitan90 19:08, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Her fame includes having the character Silvia Broome in the movie The Interpreter being based on Mitchell's life. So speedy delete may not have been appropriate. However, there are no reliable source articles on Mitchell's life (Mitchell's interview CNN’s Diplomatic License public affairs talk show doesn't count). Without sufficient sources to develop the article, the topic isn't Wikipedia Notable. It's probably not worth pursuing the article at this time. -- Jreferee 15:27, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Mitchell is now one of the chiefs of the English interpretation section. For the first time in UN interpretation service history, there are currently 2 chiefs in this section. Dragonbite 03:36, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Are you asking more about copyright issues or about how to actually place the image on the page? --Strangerer (Talk) 15:04, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Okay, well, the copyright all depends on the image you want to add. If the image is not old enough to be in the public domain (1923 in the US, or 70 years after the author's death), you have to find out whether the image's owner has released it under a free license or into the public domain. If it is a free image, you can upload it to the Commons. If it's not free, you generally can't use it unless it's completely irreplaceable, in which case you would need to claim a fair use rationale for it. You can't add a copyrighted image of a living person just to show what they look like because someone could always come along, snap a picture of them, and release it under a free license. You could add a copyrighted image of, say, an album cover in an article containing critical commentary about the album, because you can't replace that with a free image. All images must be tagged with the appropriate copyright tag. You can find more information about all this in some of the pages I'm about to link. Wikipedia:Images gives a good general overview of what to do with images. Wikipedia:Image use policy tells you more about that and also starts to tell you how to go about looking at its copyright. For non-free content, you can check out Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free content and Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline. Content that's "by permission only", "for Wikipedia only", or "for non-commercial use only" isn't okay; either an image is legally free or it is not. For specific questions, you can ask me on my talk page or you can go to Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. It is sometimes confusing, but the upload file page has a drop-down menu from which you can select the license of the image. You must add the source of the image to all images you upload!  :) I hope that helps some; I know it's a lot at once. --Strangerer (Talk) 15:30, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Basically, if you didn't take the photo or the photo is not free and someone (anyone) could take a similar photo, you may not be able to add it to Wikipedia. If you upolad a fair use photo (as opposed to a free photo), you will need to include 1. source; 2. copyright info; 3. Wikipedia license; and 4. Fair use in each article. As an example, see Image:Abdulsalami_Abubakar.JPG. -- Jreferee 15:14, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:FilipinoReportercoverJan2007.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:FilipinoReportercoverJan2007.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:07, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Snakeskin Gourami and Moonlight Gourami images

Out of curiosity and concern, where does Johnny Jensen say that you can use his images from FishBase? FishBase too makes the comment that copyright remains with the owner (except for drawings by Robbie Cada, which are public domain). I haven't seen any indication from the owner of these images that they are actually under the creative commons license; if they are copyrighted images like it seems they are, then these images are not allowed on Wikipedia. MiltonT 13:03, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Go to Wikipedia:Images for some details about where to obtain images. Generally an image found on the internet is copyrighted, so unfortunately contributing images is somewhat difficult on Wikipedia. MiltonT 19:05, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

These images currently cannot be used on Wikipedia. The first criterion for allowing non-free (non-free means copyrighted but not released under a free license) images on Wikipedia is that no free equivalent exists or could be created. Since these are images of things found in nature, someone else could take a picture of them and release it as free content. (See WP:NONFREE)

There's a chance that the copyright holder of these images is willing to release them under a free license, which would allow them to be used on Wikipedia. To ask him, follow the procedure at WP:COPYREQ. I believe owner of the images is Johnny Jensen. Best, nadav (talk) 06:26, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

    • Thank you for your assistance and reply. Just one more query. If I am able to get permission via email, where should I post the copy of this email and where to forward a copy for wikipedia? Can I post it on the talk pages of the above images. Then, what tag to use after getting permission? Kindly reply on my talk page again? Regards. Dragonbite 17:05, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Everything is covered in WP:COPYREQ, and the section "When permission is confirmed" in particular. The tag you put on the image page will depend on what license the owner chooses to use. I'll help out with the tag once we get there. If there's any problem, please inform me and I'll do my best to help out. nadav (talk) 05:52, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Rodsan18. You are off to such a great start on the article Lynn Visson that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. Appearing on the Main Page would help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. I saw this image in the common goldfish article. But isn't it a comet goldfish? It has long fins and the body shape is slightly different from the wild form (which is the shape of a common goldfish). But thanks for uploading pictures for many goldfish articles. And also I'd like to say that your edits of goldfish and many other fish articles are highly appreciated. I have seen so much improvement to the articles that we thought were hopeless. Months ago there was even a suggestion to merge those goldfish articles as they deemed too messy and unworthy, but your recent contributions have saved them !! Upload it again as a new image with the right name, and put a speedy delete for the old one with the reason of changing name? I'm not familiar with this process, so unless so one else says they agree, I won't remove the help tag. Bassgoonist 17:19, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Wait, then you'd have to change all the links to it as well...now I'm curious too.Bassgoonist 17:20, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Images can't be renamed, but they can be downloaded and uploaded again under a new name. {{db-reason|renamed and reuploaded at (new name of image) (CSD G6)}} would probably serve as a reasonable speedy-delete tag. Make sure you copy the image description page across, and copy the history of the image description page to the new image's Talk page, and correct all links to it in articles. (Of course, it's probably just easier not to rename the image at all.) --ais523 17:47, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Per ais523. The image is still new and doesn't have many links yet so it shouldn't be much trouble. That's probably the way to go. Good luck! --Melanochromis 18:53, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Look very much like a cyprinodontiform to me, so that's the category I'm using for your image. Another possibility is Beloniformes (something related to ricefish) but this is much less likely. Will get back to you if I can identify the genus or species. Where did you get this one? --Melanochromis 07:19, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, if he's from New York, then it's likely that he's a cyprinodontiform, probably a killifish of the genus Fundulus as they are very common. He might not be a true freshwater fish though as all but one of the killifishes of that area are brackish-saltwater although they can survive in freshwater, but I can't guarantee anything yet as I'm not an expert in this group of fish. --Melanochromis 16:49, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Free use tag needs PermissionOTRS ticket

The basis for the Image:Fernando Amorsolo 1a.jpg free use tag is "Personal Collection of Printed Images." If you own the original Image:Fernando Amorsolo 1a.jpg, then you need to send free use permission to the Wikimedia Communications committee. If you merely own one of many existing prints of the image, then it is very unlikely that the copyright for the original image came with your particular copy and a free use tag may be inappropriate. Until somebody with access to OTRS will come along and tag the article or image with {{PermissionOTRS|ticket=http://linktoticket.org }} providing evidence of the received email and clearing the status of the item in question per when permission is confirmed, the free use of the image may remain in dispute. -- Jreferee (Talk) 17:14, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

"*Hello Andrew c., I just want to verify a DYK appearance on July 12, 2007. I know that the Michael Dadap article did indeed appear on the Main Page by "visual confirmation" and through your notice delivered on my User's Talk Page. However, I also received a notice from User:ViolinViola informing me that The Children's Orchestra Society also/already appeared on the Main Page. But I can't seem to find or have any evidence that it had indeed already been chosen/picked. The "hook" is not in archive, not in the next DYK update page, and is still on the "DYK's suggestions" page. And also, only the Michael Dadap article's talk page has a "DYK banner"; none can be found on the talk page of the Children's Orchestra Society article. Could you please kindly verify/clarify this? I believe User:VioloinViola is just not yet aware of the mechanisms of the DYK since he/she is a fairly new Wikipedian if I am not mistaken. I could understand that, but I need confirmation about DYK appearance of the "Children's Orchestra" article. Thanks for your assistance... User:Rodsan18 a.k.a Dragonbite 19:09, 13 July 2007 (UTC)."

There is no record of this article ever being on the main page under DYK. Perhaps there is confusion because two different individuals nominated this article?-Andrew c [talk] 19:54, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

DYK/N

Have a look at WP:DYK#Updating the DYK next update page. You should avoid picking your own noms, but the actual process of updating the Next Update page is fairly straightforward: pick one from the current last qualifying day or the next day if none from that date are suitable; copy it to the next update page; remove anything after the question mark (nominators name, comments etc.); add the the mainpage star template {{*mp}} in place of the star; copy the article name date, creator and nominator under "Credits" further down the page, then remove the original nom and any associated comments or pictures from the suggestions page. You can use the links on the next update page to check to see how it will look on the main page (whether it is too long or too short). Have a go, at worst you will get it wrong and somebody will have to fix it, but nobody should take offence at you trying to help, and if they do I'll hit them with a stick. Thanks for the award. I just want that Philippine-related articles are truly free by them having free images. --bluemask (talk) 14:20, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Images for the Kuh Ledesma article

Hey Dragonbite, I replied on my talk page, but I wanted to make sure you got it, so here it is!

That's great that you got a free image, Dragonbite!! It looks great! In my experience, Flickr users are totally willing to freely license their photos (especially when the find out the photos can then be used on Wikipedia!). Thanks for the barnstar, it looks great.  :-D If you have any other image- or copyright-related questions, feel free to ask me! --Iamunknown 07:24, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Again, that is really cool you got a free image. I know the first time I asked, I was terrified about what the uploader would say, if they were even the copyright holder, etc. But it works! :D --Iamunknown 07:26, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

San Lorenzo Ruiz - Obando Fertility Rites

Hi, mind enlightening me what relationship San Lorenzo Ruiz has with Obando Fertility Rites? -- • Kurt Guirnela •Talk 02:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, pardon me. I should have written a note to you. Well, I added it there sometime ago because the article is related to "saints and the Philippines" (well, in my opinion only). The Obando Fertility Rites article has a section on saints (although they are not Filipinos). But it is worth enlightening a reader about the many faces of the catholic religion in the Philippines.
