Orphaned non-free media (File:Meat City label.jpg)

About the Lennon song articles
[edit]Why did you restore articles that proved no notability and were only one sentence that just basically said "This is a song by John Lennon." Wikipedia isn't a place for everything and these articles, specifically ones like "Tight A$" were pointless, there were SO MANY one sentence articles where the citations proved zero notability or there were no citations at all. Yet you restored them proving they're notable, which most of the ones you restores still aren't. Now I have to go through the trouble of putting all of these articles through AfD because they shouldn't have article, and watch them all slowly get deleted because I'm sure that almost every article I redirected will be proven as non notable song that shouldn't have an article. I love the song "Tight A$" a lot actually, but it's article was terrible and non Wikipedian. It's not like I even touched the actual notable songs. MAYBE I might have redirected a few notable ones that were just poorly made, but as for "Tight A$" and about a dozen others they're being going to AfD and I'm sure the consensus will be redirect. No hard feelings, cheers, and no most John Lennon's solo songs are not notable, especially since they don't have sources proving they are. Have a source describing why he wrote it, the music in the song, or an interesting fact is not notability, substantial cultural impact, being a single (hopefully a charting one), an depth critical response or extensive covers by other artists (usually at least 5) are what makes a song notable enough for an article. --Mrmoustache14 (talk) 04:41, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- All those songs are notable. I started adding reliably sourced information to some of them, but that takes time. Several of the books I referenced in "Meat City" and "Well Well Well" cover EVERY officially released John Lennon song in some detail. That in itself provides the multiple independent, secondary reliable sources needed to more than satisfy WP:N. Rlendog (talk) 17:15, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'll also point out, per WP:NNC, "Notability is a property of a subject and not of a Wikipedia article. If the subject has not been covered outside of Wikipedia, no amount of improvements to the Wikipedia content will suddenly make the subject notable. Conversely, if the source material exists, even very poor writing and referencing within a Wikipedia article will not decrease the subject's notability." The latter is the situation with the songs you redirected. "The source material exists." I have already proven that for "Meat City" and "Well Well Well", and to some extent for a few others. And in some cases the sources are at least partially available on Google Books, and these are hardly the only sources that exist. The articles were (and some still are poorly written and referenced, but that does "not decrease the subject's notability." I am also not sure where the suggestion about "at least 5" covers comes from. Per WP:NSONGS, "Songs that...have been independently released as a recording by several notable artists, bands or groups are probably notable." There is no specified numerical requirement. But in the case of a song the meets WP:N the number of covers is just an aside, since WP:N is Wikipedia's primary notability guideline. Rlendog (talk) 18:20, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Well answer this for me. "Tight A$", "Only People", and "Old Dirt Road" were all one sentence articles that basically just said "this is a song on this John Lennon album" can you blame me for finding absolutely no reason why it should be an article? Also I've been told to keep articles from being up until they are made into a somewhat decent article. As in a stub with 1 reference that just says it's a song by John Lennon is poorly written in such a way that it shouldn't exist until someone puts in the effort to make a decently made article. Because a poorly written articles makes Wikipedia looks sloppy and not a place to trust when looking up information. Now that you've made "Well Well Well" and "Meat City" into decent article, I won't challenge their existence. As for the other songs, can we take them down until you've made them into decent articles? If you disagree I'll just nominate them for AfD (Specifically the 3 songs I mentioned of the first line of this comment. Mrmoustache14 (talk) 20:03, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know of anyone blaming you for "finding absolutely no reason it should be an article." I just assumed you were unaware of the many reliable, independent sources that exist for these songs. I am aware of them, and so I restored the articles and began the task of expanding them. Since the information in the articles (such that it is) is sourced, there are no WP:BLP violations and there is good reason to believe that they pass WP:GNG and that I am in the process of expanding them (even if you don't want to take my word for it, I've backed it up on some of the articles already), I am not sure why you are so anxious to delete them. - As for the former, that is a matter of opinion. I need to restore the articles first in order to expand them. I just found when I started working on them that you had redirected so many at once that I didn't have time to get to all of them immediately. And given that there are sources to work with, there is no reason not to keep them as is; at a minimum someone else may wish to expand them before I get to it. As for the latter, based on Wikipedia's guidelines, what I added to "Meat City" and "Well Well Well" definitely makes them notable. You may not find the information interesting enough, but enough reliable sources did, and that is Wikipedia's standard. Rlendog (talk) 22:27, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Harrison singles
[edit]Hi Rlendog, hope you're well. I notice you've done some work on Template:George Harrison singles. I've just added some specifics there regarding dates and B-sides for some of the singles, particularly from Dark Horse, Extra Texture and Thirty Three & 1/3 albums, but wasn't sure what the correct approach is re linking when a song appears twice in the one year. Eg, should second appearances of Ding Dong and I Don't Care Anymore under 1974 be linked to their song articles also? Just thought I'd run it by you since your name appears a few times in the edit history there. Also, I was fascinated to read that Sue Me was the B-side to the proposed Don't Let Me Wait Too Long single – for years I've been trying to find out what the B-side was going to be! - I don't think it is necessary to link the same song in the same year to the song article multiple times. Personally, I don't mind linking multiple times like that, but there may be other editors who feel that is over-linking. As for "Sue Me, Sue You Blues," I don't remember where I read that - if I did I would add the sourced info to the article. I am pretty sure that comes from the fact that a couple of acetates of "Don't Let Me Wait..." did sneak out with "Sue Me Sue You" on the b-side. I've long been hoping to find an image of even the A-side of those acetates on line, but to date haven't been successful. Rlendog (talk) 15:07, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Rizana Nafeeks' Image

User:Future Perfect at Sunrise removed it. There is a revived discussion going on currently. I would like to ask if you are OK with me doing so as I used part of the deleted article to make it and the admin who userfied it says I needed tour consent first. - I have no problem with restoring the article. You have certainly addressed the issue that caused the deletion, which was a lack of reliable sources. I'll admit that I am not sure that what is there now is quite enough to establish notability (i.e., IMDB is generally not an adequate source, and I couldn't open one of the key sources to see if the coverage there was significant), but that is not my unilateral decision to make - if someone feels that what is there is not enough to establish notability it can be taken back to AFD for further discussion. George Harrison B-side face labels
[edit]Hi Rlendog. Just to let you know, I've recently been uploading images of B-side face labels for George Harrison singles, which has meant replacing those you added for "Deep Blue" and "Miss O'Dell" last November. I hope you're okay with this – in the case of "Miss O'Dell", I've come up with one that I feel is a much clearer/cleaner image. With "Deep Blue" – as good as your image was – I've replaced it in order to match the appearance of the face labels in articles such as "Miss O'Dell", "Hari's on Tour (Express)", "World of Stone" and "Māya Love". (Some of those articles contain song infoboxes and others single infoboxes, depending on whether the song was first released as a B-side or as an album track; but generally, with the facility to reduce image size having been disabled for single infoboxes, I've been able to make all these face labels appear pretty much the same size from page to page.) As I say, I hope you're okay about this, and I felt I should drop you a line to explain. I'm simply trying to ensure there's some uniformity across all George Harrison articles where possible, just as I'd hope other contributors might be doing for artists such as Dylan, Lennon, Neil Young etc. Best, JG66 (talk) 12:14, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

- Yes, I was in a bit of a quandary about that – single infoboxes for all or some with song infoboxes. I was mindful of situations like "That's the Way It Goes", which was a 1982 album track that happened to be selected as a B-side, but not until 1989. Even more so with "All Things Must Pass", a well-known 1970 album track that ended up on a 2001 promo single. In those cases, the song's issuing on a single really has nothing to do with its most notable release, a point that is/would be obvious from text in the article's lead section. "Māya Love" is certainly in this category also. The article discusses the song in its 1974/Dark Horse context – lyrics related to Harrison's split with Boyd midway through that year, 1974 live performances, Harrison previewing the track on US radio – yet the song's release on a single (in December 1975 in the US, Feb '76 in the UK) was to help promote his next album, Extra Texture; so its B-side status is really more like a footnote, almost irrelevant in comparison. I agree that if a song was later an A-side – eg, Crackerbox Palace, True Love and It's What You Value, all used as 1977 A-sides to promote their 1976-released parent album – there's no question that a single infobox is needed. Because, the article's Release section would/should discuss the song's single release in some detail (ideally) and, in some cases, a Chart positions section will add to the idea that one of the song's most notable aspects was its release as a single. Sorry, don't mean to go on(!). I'm just saying that, some time back, I considered the point you're making, but it definitely seemed as if exceptions needed to be made, otherwise a song's infobox might have little in common with the content of an article. Not only that, but it seems to me we could end up in a rather ridiculous situation otherwise, where, if multiple singles were issued from an album over a period of six months or more, and with different choices for the various "sides" dependent on each market, almost every album track would merit a single infobox. I'm thinking of George Harrison's 1976 album, Thirty Three & 1/3, where 7 out of 10 tracks appeared on singles through to June 1977 from the original November 1976 album release. (Michael Jackson's Thriller comes to mind as an extreme example of this same situation.) So, I think single infoboxes are fine for all A-sides and for the B-side of an album's advance/lead single; but for a B-side to a second/third/fourth single, we should use a song infobox, because the song's appearance on the single is irrelevant really beside its status as a track recorded for a specific album. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

- Is more content needed?
- Headings

The great genera categorization
[edit]Hi Rlendog, I'm thrilled someone else is interested in categorizing all these genera. You probably noticed I removed the categories from some common names and put them on redirects from scientific names. That seemed to be the consensus based on this discussion; even if a given common name is completely synonymous with a given taxon name, it's not quite correct to say "Red-cheeked squirrel" is a genus, for example. Does that make sense?
Another aspect to this quixotic undertaking will be categorizing categories. Someone obviously cares a lot about Category:Bat genera, which contains categories as well as articles (it's not complete, however; I caught an untagged bat genus yesterday). Personally I'm just focusing on articles at this point. I'm hoping it won't be too hard to find genera with established categories. Maybe we should make a task force or something. - Thank you for pointing me to that discussion. I was not aware of it. There does seem to be agreement within that discussion to use the scientific name for taxa categories. However, there are only a few participants and there has been practice by others over time. For example, I found several featured articles classified as "monotypic mammal genera" under their common names. There also seem to be many common names within the "bird genera" category. So I am not sure too many people were aware of the discussion at Tree of Life. My own opinion, which I will discuss at Tree of Life now is that where the article discussing the genus is under the common name, that article belongs in the category. Readers aren't liklely to go searching among redirects to find related articles they may be looking for. And the categories are not lists of genera (in which case the list should be indexed by just the scientific name - although the associated common name should probably be shown as well), but organization tools for articles. And so the article discussing a particular genus (regardless of what the name of the article happens to be) is appropriately catergorized within the associated genus category.
