Sabra
The first part of your change is fine, as far as it goes - I'm glad to see you used an academic source, and I'm assuming you are not misrepresenting what it says. However the second part is not supported by the OED source, which says exactly what the article said before you changed it (and hence why I re-phrased it slightly to avoid copyright problems). Note that I will have no problem with any changes you might make, as long as they are supported by high-quality sources (and you can't get much better than the OED). Note that, for a long time, the article had a very poor definition, with an equally poor source: "a native-born Israeli", which, apart from the ugly redundancy of "native-born", also implies that non-Jewish Israelis are sabras. I did try to find an extensive, preferably academic, article discussing the whole topic of sabras, and was surprised not to find one in the limited time available to me, so I settled for the OED, of which I'm fortunate to have a printed copy in my possession. --NSH001 (talk) 12:07, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Southern Rhodesian involvement in World War I...
...Just to say that it's great to see the article going for Featured Article status. Best of luck with it over the coming weeks! Hchc2009 (talk) 06:02, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

GA review
Hello,
I'm sorry to bother you. I wondered, in light of your work on Rhodesian military history, whether you might consider doing a GA review for Belgian Congo in World War II? I wrote and nominated it but it's been nominated for a month now and nothing. Finding a reviewer for African articles in general seems incredibly difficult. If you're not interested or busy, I fully understand but it's worth asking anyway!
All the best! Brigade Piron (talk) 09:49, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- No problem at all. Looks pretty solid for GA status from first glance. I should be able to do it today, if not tomorrow. Good on you for putting work into African history. —Cliftonian (talk) 10:22, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comments, I'll get back to you on them tomorrow but many thanks for being so quick too! Incidentally, you might be interested in Kenya Colony in World War II (another one of mine, though not anywhere near GA standard) if you can add anything? All the best, Brigade Piron (talk) 12:45, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

South vs. Southern
You are 100% correct.... was "Southern" indeed! Lets ignore being pedantic, now its correct. However, I am not sure what the Wiki policy is - to use the correct term, or to use the term stated in the book by the publisher? I am though content to simply leave it as it is now. Military history Wikiproject coordinator election
Hi Cliftonian, I'd like to encourage you to nominate for the upcoming election of coordinators of the Military History Wikiproject. I think that you'd do a great job, and you'd bring some new blood into the coordinator team (including from a couple of under-represented backgrounds given that you have an interest in Rhodesia and live in Israel). Details on the election are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/September 2013, but please do let me know if you have any questions about the role or the election process - neither is very time consuming. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 11:33, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your helpful edits of the Burnham article. Burnham has been stuck as a FAC since July 30th. Three reviewers have been charitable with their observations and voiced their support for the article once I addressed their comments. However, the first reviewer immediately posted an oppose and left few actionable objections to resolve. She has been both slow and miserly about posting comments even though I speedily addressed all her actionable issues and erred in favor of the reviewer in several cases where the comments were only a matter taste. Still, she has not removed her opposition.
I know you are a subject expert on Rhodesia and a major contributor to related articles. If you have not yet been a major contributor to the Burnham article, I would appreciate your taking a look at the FAC and posting comments here. Many thanks. Ctatkinson (talk) 13:54, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I took the note you crafted from Marston to describe the Matabele variations in the Shangani Patrol article and re-used it in the Frederick Russell Burnham article. Also, thanks for your on-going interest in Burnham. A lot of comments have come out of the peer review and some of my edits could use another set of eyes, so I really appreciate your jumping in. Question(s)
Hi, Cliftonian! I wandered can you help me with the following issues:
1) For some time now, I want to create a list of opposition leaders of Rhodesia since the introduction of responsible government in 1923 until its demise in 1979, but I can't find any source, website etc which contain data about that. As Rhodesia's political system was modelled on the Westminster system, and all the other Westiminster system countries (UK, Canada, Australia etc) already has lists of opposition leaders, I think Rhodesia should have such a list too.
2) Also, I can't find the names of people who served as the Speakers of the House of Assembly of Rhodesia from 1952 to 1959, at the moment there is a gap in list of Speakers for that period...
If you can help me with this issues, I'll be really grateful to you. Cheers! --Sundostund (talk) 14:49, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Sundostund, I will have a look at these issues over the next few days and will try to get answers for you. I fear that both will be difficult to find sources for but I will do my best. I hope you are well! Cheers! —Cliftonian (talk) 13:54, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- Cliftonian, thank you for your reply! I'm sure it will be hard to find sources, so far I wasn't able to find them anywhere. But, do whatever you can - have a look at these issues when you have enough time, I hope you'll have a better luck than me. I truly believe that lists of Rhodesian officeholders can't be complete until we make list of opposition leaders and fill gap in list of Speakers... I hope you are well too! Everything best to you. Cheers! --Sundostund (talk) 15:17, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Eland kills at Entumbane
Hi Cliftonian,
As you may have noticed, I've been working on the Eland Mk7 article lately and recently saw it promoted from stub to B-class status. There is a section on the vehicle's combat history that includes its confirmed kills of ZIPRA armour during Entumbane in '81. Some of the Rhodie vets kindly disclosed that at least one BTR-152 was destroyed, and two mentioned a one-on-one encounter in which a BRDM(-2?) driving up the hill was hit on Essexvale opposite the petrol station by a single Eland parked near the Bulawayo drive in. A BTR was also apparently fireballed crossing the bridge on Essexvale at some other point.
Your sources for 1981 Entumbane Uprising are evidently more extensive than mine; I noticed you mention that ACR accounted for at least three BTRs during the entire op. I've seen a tally of ZIPRA vehicles destroyed by the Zim security forces somewhere before, but since ZNA was also using 106mm recoilless rifles against the APCs I'm still completely in the dark as to how many were armour-to-armour kills. Could you help shed some light on this matter by confirming how many vehicles and of what type were claimed by Elands at Entumbane?
Thanks! --Katangais (talk) 22:34, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Katangais,
- Well done on your fine work on the Eland Mk7 article! Now regarding your question: my main source for the fighting at Entumbane is Masodja, the history of the Rhodesian African Rifles by Alexandre Binda. The narrative of the uprising mostly comes from ex-RAR officers. According to this the armoured vehicles were Soviet BTR 152 APCs mounted with 12.7 heavy machine guns. On page 387 it is mentioned that Sergeant Stephen Devine (Australian) encountered one of these at the Holiday Inn intersection on the way out of town towards the Johannesburg road, and that he destroyed it with a single shell (also killing the 20 ZIPRA inside). On the same page it is recorded that Devine's four Elands then destroyed two more advancing BTR 152s on Essexvale (see the Entumbane article for a more detailed description of this). The book mentions no more BTR kills.
- I hope this is helpful. If you would like me to look up something else please don't hesitate to ask. Keep well and have a great Sunday —Cliftonian (talk) 04:13, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry, this review is high on my list of priorities and I will get back to it soon. I'm very glad to hear that you are well. Thanks, —Cliftonian (talk) 08:14, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- No worries about being somewhat less active on the project as of late; we all need breaks from time to time. Thank you for making this FAC a priority. I hope the situations that are causing you frustration will resolve soon and in a positive manner. Neelix (talk) 15:54, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for contributing to the Nefarious: Merchant of Souls FAC. The article has been featured and I have nominated it to go up on the main page here. Neelix (talk) 22:52, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. Hope you're well, God bless —Cliftonian (talk) 08:43, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
Main Page appearance: Rudd Concession
This is a note to let the main editors of Rudd Concession know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on October 30, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 30, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
The Rudd Concession, a written concession for exclusive mining rights in Matabeleland, Mashonaland and other adjoining territories in southern Africa, was granted by King Lobengula of Matabeleland to Charles Rudd (pictured), James Rochfort Maguire and Francis Thompson, three agents acting on behalf of the politician and businessman Cecil Rhodes, on 30 October 1888. The concession conferred on the grantees the sole rights to mine throughout Lobengula's country, as well as the power to defend this exclusivity by force, in return for weapons and a regular monetary stipend. Despite Lobengula's retrospective attempts to disavow it on the grounds of alleged deceit by the concessionaires regarding the settled terms, it proved the foundation for the royal charter granted by the United Kingdom to Rhodes' British South Africa Company in October 1889, and thereafter for the Pioneer Column's occupation of Mashonaland in 1890, which marked the beginning of white settlement, administration and development in the country. The Company officially named the territory Rhodesia, after Rhodes, in 1895, and governed it until 1923. (Full article...)

I commented out part of your edit on the football team because my source doesn't quite stretch far enough. Do you have a source for the 1964 suspension? Sarastro1 (talk) 21:50, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

- I think I got your point on the MCC. I've tweaked a few of your tweaks, but thanks for the copy-edit. I've just a little more to add about what happened, but then I want to go through and add a few bits and pieces from at least two other books, so we are not over-reliant on Oborne. So there's a bit to do yet. After that, I usually go for GA before PR and FA, and can be irritatingly slow to work on things as I like to leave them to brew for a while before working on them a bit more! But as always, and assuming I don't drive you mad by leaving it for weeks at a time, feel free to jump in at any time. If you want to leave anything on the sandbox talk page, again feel free if you want to keep everything together. It may be a little while before I copy it over to the article page.

- One point on the images, though. I'm not sure how well up you are on images. I'm patchy, but I'm 99% certain that most of the England player photos are not really PD in the US and would fail an image check at FAC. There are weird rules over Australian images, and I wonder if NZ images apply too. I may ask someone who knows. Images may be a problem. I can get a dead cert image of Allen and Gilligan, but nothing really from the 1960s. I may ask an expert or two if we'd get away with a FU image of D'Olly. Thanks again. Sarastro1 (talk) 22:12, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Can you source Pretoria for the Maori rugby thing? Oborne only says South Africa. I've just a few bits to add now, then I'll copy it over to the article and think about GA. Cheers. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:26, 7 November 2013 (UTC)
- I put "Pretoria" in as a metonym in place of "the South African government" to save words and reduce repetition. I've used this without issue in several FAs, but feel free to change it if you don't like. Hope you are well and well done again on this really good draft. I feel proud to have lent a hand on it here and there —Cliftonian (talk) 08:08, 8 November 2013 (UTC)
- I've copied the sandbox over to the main D'Oliveira affair article now, and I'll finish it off on that page. I think it's essentially complete now, and just needs bulking out in places and a few more references adding. I've put in a (frankly dreadful!) lead, but that part isn't anywhere near finished. Feel free to work on that part yourself as well. Any queries or thoughts from now on, I'll put on that talk page. Thanks again for all your help on this so far, and please keep adding stuff that you think will be useful. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:08, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I've just done the review for the Adam Render DYK nomination. No problems at all but could I ask you to double check the isbn for the Rosenthal book, please? Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong (quite a common occurrence for me!) but I'm getting this error when trying to access it; I'm guessing it's this one? Thanks for such an interesting article! DYK for Adam Render
On 8 November 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Adam Render, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Adam Render, a German-American hunter, found the ruins of Great Zimbabwe by accident in 1867? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Adam Render. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

D'Olly update
I've taken out a few of the images as I have some concerns; I've asked an image expert to take a look, though, to see what we can get away with. I've also asked for some advice on the referencing for the two ebooks I've used. But I'm basically done from my end now, apart from tweaks. Maybe the aftermath section could be beefed up? Anyway, I'm going to nominate at GAN now to see what happens. The standard of review there can be patchy, but it may be useful before heading to PR and FAC. I hope you can continue to help out before, during and after the review, and I hope that you will be a co-nominator when we get to FAC (unfortunately there is no co-nom thing at GA!) Sarastro1 (talk) 21:15, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- I nominated in the sports and recreation section, but that doesn't seem right somehow! And thanks for the lead revision, by the way. It looks much better now. (I hate leads) Sarastro1 (talk) 21:23, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- One other point. Two of the English selectors had very right wing links: Gilligan was a member of a fascist party in the 1920s, and Bedser was associated with a far-right group. Now, no-one suggests that this had any bearing on anything (although it is hinted at in places, and I can source it) but I wonder if it should be included; either as a note, or in the main text. Any ideas? Sarastro1 (talk) 22:20, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
- I'll be more than happy to keep on helping out on this as I have become rather interested in it. I'm flattered that you would like me to co-nom and will gladly do so. Regarding the right-wing links of Gilligan and Bedser, I think this is certainly interesting, and worth mentioning in a note or in passing, though I would be careful not to put too much stress on it as this could be perceived as POV (and perhaps original research as well). Perhaps put it in the article and see how it looks; we can always take it out later. Re: referencing, I'm somewhat confused by what we mean by "Loc 1387" etc; are these page numbers, entry numbers or what? I think perhaps a section relating to politics or something would perhaps have been better as it may have helped us get a more prestigious reviewer, but on the other hand there are more reviewers at the sport section and I don't think any dubious fly-by-night is going to take on a political review like this. Hope you're well and having a good week. Cheers, —Cliftonian (talk) 16:13, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
- It's not OR about Gilligan and Bedser as the sources make the connection without saying it had any impact. "Loc" is the location in an ebook; I don't have print versions of two books, so I can only give the location on Kindle. I've checked with Brianboulton who suggests adding the chapter numbers to make verification easier; I will do that today or tomorrow. I wondered about politics; I may move it later; you are right about the prestigious reviews, and I speak as someone who writes pretty exclusively about sport! Sarastro1 (talk) 18:12, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
- What I was meaning to say was that the wrong wording here could imply a link, which would be OR. Sorry for being unclear. Okay re the locs, yes think adding the chapters would be good for now if page numbers not accessible. —Cliftonian (talk) 20:33, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
- All done now: chapters added, and a note on Bedser and Gilligan (and I've worded it very carefully, and matched the sources). I think I'll leave it now and see what happens at GA. I'm still undecided on whether to change the section in which I nominated, but I'll keep it there for the moment. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:46, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Tichborne case, May 2012 FAC
In May 2012 you were one of the reviewers who commented on this article at the FAC which led to its promotion. I have recently noticed that an editor has added a substantial amount of text to the article, without talkpage discussion and of course without review. I have outlined some concerns on the article's talk, here. I would greatly appreciate it if you could look at the page and give a reviewer's opinion on this new material. GA review of Malagasy Uprising
Hi Cliftonian, Thanks for being willing to review the Malagasy Uprising article. I've never had one of my nominations be picked up that quickly before - I'm sure you know how these African topics sometimes fly below the radar. If you ever need someone to review one of your Rhodesia articles, please don't hesitate to ping me on my talk page. That said, I literally *just* got it ready, and I was prepared to have to wait four months for a review (like my last one on Marc Ravalomanana, the last elected president of Madagascar before the 2009 coup), and expected I might continue to add content that would get it close to FA level. If you do find anything significant is needed, don't fail it - let me know, and I can probably do significant additions within the week. Best, Lemurbaby (talk) 16:15, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Lemurbaby, please call me John. No problem at all re: Malagasy, glad I can help. I have reviewed the article and put some comments from my first run-through, I hope these help on the way to GA and perhaps beyond. Don't worry, I don't think I have ever straight-up failed an article at GAN (perhaps because I usually only review high-end work). Thank you very much for your offer re: Rhodesian topics, I will let you know next time I have one ready for review. You may have noticed that I have been somewhat less active these past few months so I don't expect to have one ready for a while. Keep well and have a great week, —Cliftonian (talk) 16:57, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi John, I'll look forward to making the GA changes on Saturday. If you have the time to read through my current FAC, Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo, which has been stalled for several weeks at two supports and needs the third not to fail, I would be much obliged. It's another pretty good insight into the toll of colonialism in Africa, but on the individual level. - Carrie (Lemurbaby (talk) 02:13, 19 December 2013 (UTC))

DYK nominations
Hi Cliftonian, I hope you don't mind me asking and won't be offended but you seemed the best person to ask! I've reviewed at least a couple of your DYK nominations in the past so I know you usually nominate them yourself and undertake a QPQ. However, I've noticed recently there have been quite a high number of 'not a self nomination so no QPQ required' nominations and as one of your articles was among them - Jonathan D. C. Turner - I wondered if there was a drive or blitz taking place? I do appreciate that the DYK rules allow for no QPQ when it isn't a self nom. I really don't mean to cause any offence by asking but I'm just trying to work out why there is such an influx of them at present? SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:19, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Phil—don't worry, I'm not offended at all. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was actually quite surprised by your note as I hadn't been aware that Turner had been nominated for DYK. I'm not really that into DYK and this is not the only time I have not nominated an article I have created. I didn't bother nominating this one because I thought it too short and kind of dull for the main page, but it seems somebody else has taken it upon himself to do so (and without informing me, it seems). Anyway, I'm sorry to say I don't know of any drive or blitz with DYKs and I don't think I can really tell you anything that would help you figure this out. I'm glad (and kind of flattered) you thought to contact me about it though. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. If there's anything else, please don't hesitate to drop me a note again. Cheers, —Cliftonian (talk) 17:42, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for such a prompt and understanding reply, it's very much appreciated and has been very helpful. Now I know there isn't a drive/blitz I'll risk bringing the influx up at the DYK talk page. Thank you! SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:58, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Cliftonian! As per my earlier questions, I just wonder whether you managed to find some sources about Leaders of the Opposition and Speakers of the House of Assembly of Rhodesia. I wasn't able to find anything so far... I know its a hard task, but maybe you had some more success than me. Cheers! --Sundostund (talk) 13:55, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
