This is the talk archive for February 2006 for me, ➨ REDVERS. If you post here, I won't see it and I won't reply. So don't post here. It saves everyone time. You can post here instead and that will make more sense. Thanks ➨ REDVERS 15:37, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Redvers!

[edit]

Thank you for your kind support of my rfa, which passed. Thanks for all the support through this, I really appreciate it. Should you ever need my help with anything, don't hesitate to ask! Cheers Banez 17:56, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!
Thank you!

I returned

[edit]

Hi there Redvers, since I never contacted you for the past couple of days, thought I would let you know I have returned (see my user page message) to Wikipedia and all projects, including Esperanza. Cheers! SWD316 talk to me 03:12, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

[edit]
Hi, Redvers! Thanks for reverting my user page. :-) Sango123 (talk) 22:45, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed this morning that the Sydney Newman article I've been working on suddenly has a blue link to Howard Thomas instead of a red one. So I follow it thinking "Oh, it won't be the same man, I'll have to disambig it," and I find your excellent article about Thomas. Good stuff! Angmering 10:26, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the kind words about the Newman article — yes, I am aiming for FA status with it, I'll probably put it up as a self-nom on Monday after it's been on peer review for a week (not that anybody seems to have noticed it there!). Thanks for adding the picture, too — it's great to have another image in it. Angmering 14:45, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Now!"; thanks

[edit]

Thanks for restoring my edit that EGC reverted; I've mentioned it on the talk page, but EGC comes across as being pretty lazy/clueless/arrogant anyway. Fourohfour 14:38, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User Page award

[edit]

Thanks for nominating me for the user page award. However, I've decided that, since I was in the last round, I'll judge this time. Thanks anyway. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 22:22, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome, I was wondering a thing about Esperanza projects; I've been running a personal project to wikify a random article a day, would this be something that could be proposed for Esperanza projects?

I'm keeping track of them on my user page using a calendar, I thought it'd be a nice thing to adopt an article for a moment, brush it up, learn something, put it on the watchlist and watch it grow, it's also a good way to find something to do if you're bored.

Is this fit for Esperanza, or does it have to be more of a user interaction type of project?

DYK

[edit]
Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Thomas Brownrigg, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Harrogate Line article map

[edit]

Just to let you know with regards to your map of the Harrogate Line that the location of "Leeds Woodside" station has ben shown on the map as being located between the current Headingley and Burley Park stations. This is incorrect and should actually be located between Horsforth and Headingley railway stations. Also I believe this station will possibly reopen in the near future according to the following link from the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper so if you could modify the map for these changes then this would be great. --Wrh1973 21:49, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reduced power

Thanks a ton, your reduced power was enough to get me a barnstar ;). I hope that you would be able to return to full power asap to fill the Template talk:Did you know with tons of suggestions. --Gurubrahma 10:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

User page award

[edit]

Congratulations, Redvers/Archive03! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

More information can be found on this page.

NWDR

[edit]

I suppose you could get all technical and describe the number of lines and aspect ratios that NWDR introduced? It's a pity we're not speaking of colour TV - didn't the Germans contribute to the development of the PAL standard for Europe after deciding the American NTSC could REALLY be improved upon? And how compatible was the system that NWDR introduced? If it wound up being compatible with equipment in other countries, you could argue that they DID introduce a standard to Germany.... --JohnDBuell 15:29, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. Sounds like that will work. If I knew enough about the technologies, I'd likely contribute to more TV articles, but I'm more of a viewer than an engineer. And SECAM? Who remembers SECAM? ;) --JohnDBuell 15:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi, Responding to your private message regarding links I posted to fabgearusa.com in Gerry Anderson related entries - they are not strictly commercial links. Fabgearusa.com maintains an online community forum and links page for fans of the tv series and movies produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson as well. The links were added to enrich the experience of Wikipedia users looking for more informaiton on fandom for these shows, as well as merchandise. I do plan on contributing information to Wikipedia, but haven't begun to do so yet - adding the links was a way of making the entries more valuable to surfers. I hope you'll leave the links on the pages. Please email me at ataylor@mindspring.com if you wish to discuss this further or need more informaiton. Thanks, Anthony Taylor

Hi Redvers, you are welcome; Nothing gives me more joy than seeing well developed articles make it to the DYK, especially as this spurs more people to contribute. --Gurubrahma 16:17, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hi Redvers, Thank you for letting me know.. Users may have a particular bias for or against some aspect of an article that leads them to categorise in a certain way.. Is there an easy procedure to follow when finding a category to use, and to reference on the fly? Cheers, Greg Gregorydavid 13:17, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Redvers, Thank you for confirming what I thought.. I used a precedent approach, ie I thought BBC is synonymous with CNN is some respects, hence my tagging BBC with a like category..

The delay in introducing TV to South Africa was a form of censorship, thats why I have tagged those two articles, ie SABC and Television in South Africa with that category.. I hear one must be bold on Wiki, so I know there are plenty of experts around who have plenty of time to fix things eventually..

It is interesting thinking about the modus operandi of all the types and roles of Wiki people..

Thanks for the time and effort to fill me in.. Regards, Gregorydavid 06:19, 23 February 2006 (UTC) PS I cut this from my reply on my talk page.. Gregorydavid 06:19, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! You signed up for Esperanza's admin coaching programme a while back. Myself and Drini have been assigned as your coaches, feel free to ask any questions you may have. NSLE (T+C) at 07:27 UTC (2006-02-26)

Spelling of "Fred Dineage's" name

[edit]

Dear Redvers. Fred Dineage is a friend of my family. Puzzled by the widespread misspelling of his name in Wiki I went back to an original error made on the site you refer to as the authority for the spelling "Dinenage". It doesn't matter to Fred - the most unegotistical of men - but it did trouble me which is why I went through Wiki changing the incorrect "Dinenage" to "Dineage". "Dinenage", incidentally, is also a name e.g. the ex-Tory MP for an area near Southampton I think) but you may wish to do the work of re-re-correcting - in the interests of accuracy and good manners. It's a salutory reminder to go back to original sources. I've made that mistake myself enought times to have learned my lesson, but perhaps i should have contacted you first to say what i was doing as it can be vexing to have one's conscientious work unpicked by a stranger - one of the feastures of Wiki. Shall I give you Fred's phone number (I would need to ask him first) so you can check directly? Fred was a colleague of my stepfather Jack Hargreaves on the children's programme "How" and gave a moving talk at my stepfather's memorial service in 1994. Retraction: Redvers right, me wrong!

[edit]

I have made a fool of myself! Redvers spelling is of course right and I appreciate the way that with great politeness he has swiftly corrected my careful re-editing of Fred Dinenage's name which I'd changed to "Dineage" - the way it's pronounced. I thought that because I knew Fred I knew how to spell his name. Instead I realise now that he was too good mannered to correct me! What a gentleman; Redvers too for being so cool about it. I'd have been livid. Instead I'm red with embarrassment for being so self-righteous about my conviction that I was right and Redvers was wrong. Sibadd 19:27, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Redvers

[edit]

Thank you Redvers. I've already learned a valuable lesson about checking sources. I really like the way Wiki works so quickly in this respect. There are errors in academic literature that go uncorrected for far longer because once in text they are unchangeable. I have passed on the correct spelling to Paul Peacock who is writing Jack Hargreaves biography to ensure when he touches on Jack's role in "How" he doesn't misspell Fred's name.
