DGG ( talk ) 06:08, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Something like that can be most annoying. It's a very detailed article and obviously, a lot of work has gone into it. You've put good arguments forward. The easiest thing to avert deletion might be to proof that GNG has been met. You know all the sources; are there a couple of reliable sources where she was discussed as a person (as opposed to her work), with some biographical details? If you point me to those (please reply here), I'll take a look. If it stacks up, I shall comment accordingly. Schwede66 01:53, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it pretty a pretty hardline approach when she has done so much across all areas of science, not just the general practitioner aspect that they seem to see as being less than notable! Also, I am picking up that Turner, like many NZ scientists, is a very private person so there is little about her earlier life. I really liked this article by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners because it was an interview in which she talked about a lot of her values and experiences that have shaped her career. But I got told early on that it was not a reliable secondary source so took it off. Have look anyway. Thanks for your interest. I feel strongly that this is a good article.Realitylink (talk) 03:52, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dear Realitylink, I think things don't look good for your article on Nikki Turner. My view of the issue is that anyone with some academic publications tends gets judged by many on the WP:Prof criteria alone. It seems clear to me that she is a lot of good academic contributions but it is her work in public health generally and as director of IMAC and all the reports on/by her in the media are why she is notable and we should have a page on her. The page's over promotional tone... large content is something that often annoys people. I am not sure how best to proceed and I think it is often difficult to change the mood of an AfD once it has started. And lines like She is, at best, a standard academic in her field are I think very harsh. Anyway best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 15:26, 27 March 2021 (UTC))[reply]

Article assessment

[edit]

That isn't the way to deal with a stub assessment. Instead, what you do is either reassess an article by giving it a different rating (you need some experience for it, though), or, if the current assessment is obviously wrong, you remove that assessment part itself (in this case, the words "stub" where they appear). What you've done instead is remove the project tags in their entirety, and that is obviously undesirable. Those tags are there so that editors who belong to those WikiProjects can keep an eye on things. Schwede66 22:14, 16 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that, appreciate your expertise. Realitylink (talk) 00:03, 17 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Jemma Geoghegan photo

[edit]

I see that you've uploaded a photo of Jemma Geoghegan to Commons. That looks like rather professional work. Are you based in Dunedin? I'm asking because you say it's your own work and she's based in Dunedin. There is a group of active Wikipedians in Dunedin who sometimes meet; you might want to join them. But my main question is – did you take that photo in Dunedin? Schwede66 19:29, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I have to admit that she took it herself and sent it to me. Lakes380 upload their own images and I did suggest that she uploaded it there but it wasn't happening, so I did it myself. I told her I was doing this. I guess it comes down from Wikicommons and then she uploads it to the other page now? So, yes, I don't live in Dunedin these days! Realitylink (talk) 21:59, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I have to admit that I knew that the photo wasn't taken in Dunedin. It was taken by somebody working for Macquarie University (and not by herself, I'm afraid). Copyright rests with the photographer (and sometimes, they have signed their rights to their client, i.e. the university) and not with the subject. I shall nominate the photo for deletion. Don't pass other people's work as your own; it's the quickest way to get blocked across all of Wikimedia. Schwede66 22:10, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Realitylink (talk) 22:14, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, and the perils of rushing responses - too much happening! - when I was mentioning Lakes380 above, it was about an image for Susie Wood, who I did have a few communications with about her photo...so I guess this one will need to come down as well and I suggest to her that she upload it? (She did tell me she took it herself and was ok with it going up. I know there is a permission process for this...)You are a patient person; I hope you take my responses as being in good faith. I have a lot to learn and thanks for your help. Realitylink (talk) 23:02, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My middle name is "patience" and it's not hard to see that you are a good faith editor. New editors do stuff up one thing or another (been there; done that) and the important thing is to learn from it etc. If you do have the permission from the photographer, there is no need to take a photo down; what you need to do is to get them to send their permission to Commons. Here's an email template; fill that out for each photo and send it off to the respective photographer. I'll mark those photos as "OTRS pending" on Commons.
Here's a list of what you have uploaded to Commons. I've converted this to a wikitable – see below. Can you please edit the table below, and replace "tbd" (to be determined) with what needs to happen to each photo? I suggest the following fields:
  • OTRS
  • delete
  • own work
  • licence ok
How does that sound? Schwede66 04:58, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I will start with the ones I know for sure...and will chip away at them. (what does OTRS mean exactly? The same as tbd?):Realitylink (talk) 06:39, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The page that has the email template contains an explanation and links where you can read up on the details. But for the purpose of this exercise, whenever you send an email off for a photo, put OTRS into the table below. Schwede66 06:47, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Glen Eden Playhouse.jpg – what is the website, please? I'd like to have a look what they say about copyright. Schwede66 06:50, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

        Kia ora Greg,
thanks for your enquiry, and yes you are welcome to use my image (file PICT7903aw.jpg, http://auckland-
west.co.nz/2010/01/13/playhouse-theatre-glen-eden-3/) for your work on a wikipedia page.
        Best wishes for this project.
        Paul

Realitylink (talk) 07:02, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, good. That is one of the OTRS cases. The email above isn't good enough; please follow up with them using the text as provided.
What's the story with Richard Clinghan, please? It says "your work" on the file but "licence ok" in the table below. Schwede66 07:53, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, sorry getting mixed up with the cover image - which is definitely the author's; so yes, OTRS.Realitylink (talk)
And Theatre image.jpg – is that also OTRS as opposed to "licence ok"? Schwede66 07:54, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Holy moly...not even sure what image that is? Ah here is the permission I think...
      Permission details
This image has been released as "CCBY" by Auckland Museum. For details refer to the Commons project page.

Definitely a good learning curve...won't happen again! Had to swing out of a family card game to sweep upstairs to the computer...as you do. I tried releasing David Wratt image...just followed the process. Will that work? I haven't sent it to him...??(talk) 08:37, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

You should definitely socialise with family; sorting this out isn't urgent. I don't know what you mean by "I tried releasing David Wratt image...just followed the process. Will that work?" I see that the OTRS team has made a modification. What needs to happen is for you to complete the boiler plate text, you then send that to the photographer, asking the photographer to send that permission to the OTRS team. Schwede66 09:21, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes all sorted with the process I think. Sent the link to David Wratt to complete and send to Permissions. Will do the others tomorrow. Cheers Realitylink (talk) 11:13, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sent the emails to David Wratt (His has been approved already), Susie Wood, Dave Lowe, Tim Naish and Paul Hafner. Just gotta do Jim Salinger now. Realitylink (talk) 04:07, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Theatre image.jpg needs sorting, too. If it comes from a website that says CCBY, there needs to be a link provided to that website. For the time being, I've set this to "tbd". Schwede66 04:37, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the Theatre image one was already on Wikicommons, but not sure? So far I have been cc'd into permissions being added to images for: David Wratt, Glen Eden Playhouse, Dave Lowe, Tim Naish - pretty sure those for Nikki Turner, Jim Salinger and Susie Wood will go through judging from the email communications so far. Some of those ones of Susie Wood out in the field are a little more difficult to trace. Richard Clinghan has his own Wikipedia account so can probably deal with the image himself. Gonna lose that one of the Hollywood Theatre though - will go out and get some shots this morning. Thanks again for your support and patience. Realitylink (talk) 20:28, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, those licences are not ok. You uploaded the file and if you are not the photographer, you have to go through the OTRS process. Having an email that says "it's ok to use that photo" is not good enough. Having been copied into permission emails is also not enough. The issue is resolved when the OTRS team changes the licence; I'll now go through and tag all the images. Schwede66 22:46, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so do I need to do anything at this stage? Realitylink (talk) 02:03, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the table below. Everywhere where it says "OTRS pending", you need to send the photographer a permission email if you haven't done so already. Beyond that, we'll wait whether the OTRS volunteers sign off on what they receive. Those photos where licences remain unresolved we'll put up for deletion. Schwede66 04:50, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Items registered by Heritage New Zealand

[edit]

Greetings of the season! I see you've written Church of St. John the Baptist, Auckland. Good on you. I thought to get in touch in case you also work on Wikidata (the thing that connects all the different language Wikipedias with one another plus Commons plus all sorts of other things). In case you don't — please ignore this message. In case you do, you may be interested to hear that there is a complete set of entries for items listed by Heritage New Zealand. In this case, a bot created a Wikidata entry because the title of your page was different to how it was listed in Wikidata (had the title matched, the bot would have found it). If you had searched for the Wikidata item, you would have found it (especially if you knew that there was an entry already, which you now do). I've merged the two Wikidata items, which is easy enough to do. Any questions, please ask (here's good).

Keep up your good work! Schwede66 02:16, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I haven't had anything to do with Wikidata, but should do I feel! Do I need to do anything specific to get involved with it?Realitylink (talk) 23:19, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's like Wikipedia. Edit it if you feel so inclined. It's a good way to see what's online; there are some very nifty tools for creating lists of items (e.g. those things listed by Heritage New Zealand restricted to a region of interest). A related cool tool is Wikishootme; this runs on your phone (it's a website), and once you authorise its use (same Wikipedia account), it knows where you are and shows you Wikidata items with coordinates where there's no photo yet. Easy to find listed heritage buildings. Wikishootme uploads to Commons and links the photo to the Wikidata entry. Very cool! Schwede66 03:31, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so I was thinking of doing a draft of a page for Andrew Becroft and see that he has a Wikidata page. Obviously I can use the references from there - all nicely archived. And if the article does get done...it will link back to Wikidata automatically as long as the name is the same?Realitylink (talk) 20:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's easy enough to link it yourself (if it doesn't do it automatically). Whey you have the Wikidata page open, hit "edit" next to 'Wikipedia'. Where it then says "Wiki", it wants the relevant language code – that's en for the English Wikipedia. You then get to see an input field "page" where you enter the article's name. Hit "publish" and it's all done. Schwede66 01:15, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

[edit]

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [1] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk) 07:28, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Control copyright icon Hello Realitylink! Your additions to History of education in New Zealand have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. I see that it was a quick save to prevent loss of editing, however it was almost entirely copied before being edited down to quoting, and that's not allowed to touch mainspace. Maybe try copy-pasting it if you think your browser's going to crash in the future? Thank you. Sennecaster (Chat) 22:40, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and thanks for the notification. What about something like: Another publication collated essays that considered several issues that needed to be resolved before the goals of Tomorrow's Schools be could be realised.
If this is ok, and I add it, then I am assuming you can remove the tag? Once again, my appreciation for your prompt and entirely appropriate action. This is what makes Wikipedia credible. Nice work. Let me know your thinking...or perhaps I just take the whole reference out of the article? Your call. Realitylink (talk) 00:25, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That works, feel free to re-add. The tag won't be removed until an administrator processes it though, as I'm asking for just the revisions with copyrighted content to be redacted. It shouldn't affect your work unless you're adding more. I don't really know much about the topic, but I think WP:SPS and primary source guidelines might be a concern in this case. If the information exists in secondary sources, that's usually a more reliable source. Sennecaster (Chat) 01:36, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your additions! Could you be so kind as to note that the article uses mdy dates and is so tagged at the top of the article? It is your responsibility to make sure you use the right date format, but all your additions have dmy dates. Skyerise (talk) 12:09, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, very sorry about that lack of attention to detail! We do get a bit Kiwi-centric down here in New Zealand and forget that the world does not always do things as we do...just kidding. My apologies. It looks like they have been fixed up now? Thanks for letting me know. Much appreciated. Realitylink (talk) 19:05, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Assessments

[edit]

Any user can do assessments, as least up to B class. What those classes mean for WPNZ is described here. Importance is hugely subjective but one measure that can be looked at is page views. As a rule of thumb, some 60% of pages belonging to a Wikiproject should be low importance; the balance should thus distribute itself across the remainder. Pages that get started today are mostly low importance as the important topics have all been dealt with. Schwede66 02:01, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Quotations and periods, in or out?

[edit]

See MOS:INOROUT. When what is being quoted is a sentence fragment, the terminal period is outside the quotation marks. When the quotation is a full sentence, and the quotation ends with a period, then the period is inside the quotation marks. Paora (talk) 21:56, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks for that. I spent hours last night scouring for an answer and missed that bit about the 'fragment'! So is the expectation that if a full sentence is being quoted, it would need to have the upper case letter included in the quote when added to the article in the middle of the sentence? Would it need a colon before?? Comma?? Somehow that looks kind of weird to me; I certainly haven't done it with all my quotes in the past, and don't see it often in Wikipedia articles. But hey, we keep learning and it is something I will watch in the future and go back and revert my edits from this morning, and maybe add a couple of captitals....Realitylink (talk) 22:17, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect the answer is, yes! No problem and good to get it right. I am going back over some of other articles and checking on them. Thanks for drawing my attention to this. Kia ora.Realitylink (talk) 01:36, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
