Machine translations

[edit]

Please DON'T post any more machine translations of articles in other language wikipedias. It's fairly clear (from the titles alone) that your English isn't good enough to do any checking of these, and most duplicate material we already have. Johnbod (talk) 03:26, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I just started reviewing Kassite dynasty. I've not noticed any problems with the English but found that the attribution of the original article in Portuguese was inadequate. As this seems to be a systematic programme, we should compare notes. Please could Johnbod give some details of his findings. The matter is under discussion at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#Restricting_translations but we should list issues here to make Racnela21 aware of them. Andrew🐉(talk) 23:35, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Andrew, about the lack of attribution of the original article in Portuguese on the Kassite dynasty article, it was a honest mistake, i apologize for that, it won't happen again. Racnela21 (talk) 00:13, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the response. To avoid such omissions, I suggest that you develop a checklist from the OKA instructions. For example, when I perform a DYK review, I use the {{DYK checklist}} to ensure I cover all the issues.
There are still some loose ends at Kassite dynasty such as dummy attribution and categories. Are you planning to follow up these?
Andrew🐉(talk) 09:37, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The checklist is a great idea, I will do it to make sure there are no gaps in the future. About the loose ends, since this is a translation of an article in portuguese, I don't intend to add any material to it, as least for now, because it would need further study to make sure that all the information I am adding is true. However, I am watching the page permanently to make sure that I am aware of all the changes that are made to it. Racnela21 (talk) 11:51, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I put a {{CWW}} tag on Kassite dynasty and that really needs resolving. That not a content issue but is a copyright/licensing requirement and such issues are often taken quite seriously. I'm not comfortable doing it for you as I don't know enough about the topic and what was done to say whether it's a straight translation from a particular page or whether you restructured and rewrote some or all of it. As this issue will keep coming up, you should please try to master this aspect. Please see Repairing insufficient attribution and try doing what it suggests. If you get stuck or don't understand then feel free to ask me. Andrew🐉(talk) 13:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I followed your indications and added a note in the edit summary, through a dummy edit, to indicate that the full content is a translation of an article in Portuguese. Is everything correct now? Racnela21 (talk) 17:27, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that will do for now, thanks. I have removed the CWW tag and we still have the {{translated page}} tag on the article's talk page. Andrew🐉(talk) 21:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Missing required attribution on translations

[edit]

Racnela, an attribution statement in the revision history is a requirement, and as it is part of the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use (linked above the "Publish" button) that you agree to every time you save an edit, there are no exceptions to this requirement under any circumstances.

If you made a mistake and forgot to add a required attribution, Andrew explained in the section above how to repair the oversight. I can see that you understood his message, because your fix to Kassite dynasty (here) was correct.

However, attribution is a requirement for *all* articles you translate or copy from, not just for the ones pointed out by some editor. I noticed from the section at WP:PNT that you had created Gothic sculpture on October 14th (prior to Andrew's message) but it's now a month later, and the missing attribution still has not been added to the revision history. I haven't examined the later revision history of other articles, but I can see from the list of your created articles that your first five article creations (prior to Oct. 22) lacked attribution at creation time. If you have not subsequently repaired those five articles already, you should do so now, in the same manner as you fixed Kassite dynasty. Thanks, and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. Mathglot (talk) 23:45, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mathglot, I was not aware of the need to add the note in the edit summary when I started translating, so the first few articles ended up without this revision. I apologize, it was an honest mistake and I will correct them all now. Thanks for the comment. Racnela21 (talk) 00:12, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

More machine translations

[edit]

Hi I came here to tell you that in Renata Pallottini you have used the pronouns “he” and “she” interchangeably, which is bad editing and a sure sign of a machine translation. Now I see you’ve already been asked before not to do this. If you are using machine translation to create a draft it is your responsibility to check it thoroughly and correct it as needed. Could you please review this article, correct “he” to “she” and make any other changes that you see are required? Thanks Mccapra (talk) 08:47, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry about this, I always review the articles several times to make sure that everything is properly in place. I will review everything again and correct the mistakes Racnela21 (talk) 10:41, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Tekpix

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Tekpix, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Welcome, and translations (redux)

[edit]

Hi, Racnela21, and thank you for your translations from the Portuguese. It's great to see another editor creating new translations of articles on Brazilian topics. A couple of points on your recent translation, Declaration of age of Pedro II:

  • the title is not correct. It's a bit of a subtle point having to do with the meaning of the term of age in English; see this discussion.
  • in the first sentence you wrote:
The Declaration of age of Pedro II, also referred to as the Majority Coup in Brazilian history, ...
but this is wrong.

The problem with the first sentence, is that the expression Majority Coup is hardly ever used in English, and when it is used, it means something else. It looks like Majority Coup is a calque of the Portuguese expression Golpe da Maioridade, but you cannot simply translate Portuguese expressions with particular, idiomatic meanings like Golpe da Maioridade word-for-word into English as "Majority Coup" and expect it to mean the same thing—it does not. Accordingly, I have removed the term Majority Coup from the first sentence.

You have to investigate what term reliable sources in English use for this concept, or even if an equivalent term exists. My searches in Google books] and Google Scholar appear to demonstrate that the term Majority Coup has nothing to do with Pedro II or with Brazil when used in English sources. This is true in general, when doing translations, namely, idiomatic expressions used in one language rarely can be translated word-for-word and be expected to have the same meaning; more often, they do not. You have to check the English sources to make sure.

These are relatively minor issues that can be learned, so I'm not overly concerned about them. Mostly, I'm glad to welcome on board another editor who can help expand our coverage on Brazilian topics, and maybe also help out some of us native-English speakers when we are writing or improving articles on Brazilian topics and need help with Portuguese expressions or sources. Another of these editors is User:Elinruby who, like me, has worked on numerous articles on Brazilian topics, and will be interested to see your translations. Thanks, and happy editing! Hi, Racnela21. I've noticed your translations on various topics, and I wonder if I could interest you in contributing some translations of brief articles related to Brazilian legal codes? I am currently creating Draft:Brazilian criminal justice which includes the following Draft Navbox at the bottom: Draft:Brazilian judicial codes The articles in need of translation appear as English redlinks in this nav template. (Note: about sixteen of them are also redlinks in pt-wiki: for example, Water, Aeronautical, Executive Branch Ethics, etc., so there is nothing to translate for those cases.) If you are interested in this project, just click any red English link to start a new article, and click the superscript[pt] to find the original Portuguese article to be translated. (If no pt-wiki article exists, skip that one and pick another.)

For example, the first link in the Navbox looks like this: : Commercial (1850) [pt]

If you feel like translating that one, just click 'Commercial' in the navbox (or above) to start the new English article, which will automatically be entitled, 'Brazilian Commercial Code'—that name is already baked in, you don't have to do anything to translate the title—and then click the superscript [pt] in a new tab which will open Código comercial do Brasil and then you can start translating as you normally do. When you are finished, the link in the Navbox will turn blue. You can do as few or as many of these as you like.

No special legal knowledge is expected or required. (I have no legal background, and I am currently creating Draft:Brazilian criminal justice, which you are also welcome to help expand.) Certain Portuguese legal expressions may pose problems for translation; to help with that, please see the Brazil PLG glossary. If you run into a technical term in Portuguese that is not in the glossary, please either add it to the glossary Talk page, or to my Talk page, along with a link to the source page where you saw the Portuguese term.

I hope this project interests you, but if not, I work on other Portuguese translations from time to time, and other opportunities will arise. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 02:00, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mathglot, I'm interested, I've already translated some related articles. Do I have a deadline to start? Racnela21 (talk) 20:52, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is a volunteer project, so you get to work only on what pleases you, and there are WP:NODEADLINES. Enjoy! Mathglot (talk) 01:49, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into it, thank you! Racnela21 (talk) 11:12, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Mathglot,
It seems like many of the PT articles you mentioned here no longer exist (e.g., https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%B3digo_de_pesca_de_1967). Generally speaking, we'd be happy to translate these by adding them to our backlog in oka.wiki/tracker, but we should make sure that all articles have sufficient sources to not be deleted in EN Wiki. Could you perhaps share here a list of the articles you think meet that criteria? I can then add all of them to our list for a PT translator to pick up (whether it's @Racnela21or someone else) 7804j (talk) 08:19, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That could be. This is just one tiny fraction of a large number of clearly Notable topics which may, or may not, have articles associated with them. I realize OKA is about translating articles which exist, but rather than hijack Racnela's page, we should continue this at your page (or an OKA project page, which might be better, if it exists). Dates

[edit]

Please stop changing the date format at Spa Conference (13–15 August 1918). The article uses day month year format, yet you have now changed it for a second time to month day year, with no reason given. Please see MOS:DATERET. DuncanHill (talk) 18:11, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I apologize, thank you for the warning. Racnela21 (talk) 18:48, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
