Dead links
[edit]Thanks. See WP:Dead links. That should help. Frankly I still haven't figured out where to properly put the archive url if I find one, I'm sure that page or one of the pages mentioned at the top would tell me! You might want to read Help:Referencing for beginners also. Doug Weller talk 16:37, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Hello Prime Lemur,
Thanks for pinging me last week. (Been away - time of year.) I'm only working on Australian orchids at the moment but looking forward to reading your edits to Neobenthamia. I suggest that the Pridgeon refs. should be removed from the article - it's most unlikely that the editor who listed them has access to them (and is currently blocked anyway). Also very happy to help you with editing plant articles. Gderrin (talk) 20:49, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
Hello again Prime Lemur,
Thanks for your note on Phaius tankervilleae var. australis about "plicate/pleated". I prefer to use everyday language in describing plant morphology - eg. "egg-shaped" instead of "ovate", thereby avoiding links. Instead of "plicate" I used "pleated" but since it's a slightly unusual word, added the WT link. There is a more easily accessed definition of "plicate" here but perhaps it's better not to have a link to "pleated" or "plicate"? All the best of the season and for 2019 to you. Gderrin (talk) 20:29, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Gderrin I didn't realise it was your edit. No problem. After adding the talk discussion, I reread both descriptions (Wiktionary & leaf morphology on WP), and came to the view that "pleated" was not very clearly described on the leaf morphology page. Nor did the thumbnail image give a good feel for the actual leaf shape under discussion. On a completely different topic, I was planning on working through the article Miltonia. I completed round 1, I estimate it will take another half dozen major edits to complete. The article comes across as very fragmented, with repeated information (even in the lede). Other parts are out of date. You're welcome to place it on your watchlist and let me know if I get anything wrong. I'll go back to that talk page for P. tankervilleae and leave my answer to my own question. Thanks for contacting me! Prime Lemur (talk) 05:24, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with you about Miltonia being a mess but also like your edits to it. The lead needs tidying up as you say and the headings would be better if in the order given suggested at WP:Plants/Template. I reckon you should be BOLD editing this one. I'm working on Australian orchids at the moment but added Miltonia to my Watchlist. Also happy to help if asked. Gderrin (talk) 07:17, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks a heap. I bought a N. gracilis (in a poor state) a few months back, and struggled with it for a while. Ditto with a Dockrillia delicophylla (now Den. delicophyllum). They're going fine now. My first stop is often WP, then on to references cited. Obviously some articles are better than others, so I try to use what I've learned to improve the articles. Thanks for advice, much appreciated. Yes, its that time of year, so my activity here is less than usual. I also have a strong interest in the early botanists who described orchids, esp. those who worked in Australia. Being Australian (and speaking 'strine), I'm a monoglot, while so many manuscripts are in other languages (esp German, or worse, Latin). Anyway, enjoy the season.
