Heinlein

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia as a new Wikipedian. Wondering if you are involved with the Heinlein Society, and is Joe Halderman still involved? Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:39, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Randy, pleased to meet you. I have mostly dealt with the editors of The Heinlein Journal and not very much with the Society, though I did know Bill Patterson, and do know one or two of the people on the board. I am sorry, I haven't heard Joe Haldeman's name mentioned. I do have an invitation to write more articles for the Journal, and they were very kind when reviewing my book on the History of Polyamory in the most recent issue, # 31. Hope you have a great week. PolyHistorian1 (talk) 03:50, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Seeing your edits just reminded me of the time I wrote the mayor of the city where Heinlein was born and lived as a youth, Butler, Missouri, to suggest they honor Heinlein and have a day for him. Lo and grokhold, he went along with it. They organized it, Robert and Virginia came, and I introduced him at the dinner and they put my girlfriend at the time and myself in the second car of a parade. Heinlein said it was the only time he was the guest of honor at a parade. The town put on a good event with lots of moving parts. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:06, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a great memory. Thanks for sharing that. I did not have an opportunity to meet Robert Heinlein, tho I lived relatively close to him and we were both members of a los angeles science fiction club called LASFS.
I am acquainted with Larry Niven, and did know Jerry Pournel. (Darn autocorrect) They both spoke with great fondness of Robert Heinlein, and felt that he had taken them under his wing when they were both new authors. Both larry and Jerry have paid it forward with many authors, including myself. My second sf novel has recently been picked up by a small publishing house and i'm looking forward to a publication date of spring 2025. 2600:1700:46B0:E910:3DCC:BD40:6AB:436D (talk) 23:12, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck on the novel, nice work. The Los Angeles fan clubs are historic and extremely influential, thanks for being active in the newest rendition. Are you the same person as this user? Randy Kryn (talk) 00:27, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Randy, I didn't see a link to look at, so I didn't know what user you are referring too. However, I am happy to tell you that I write under the name G.W. Olson and here is my website. Https://glenolson.org Have a great evening. PolyHistorian1 (talk) 04:21, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Will check your site out. By user I meant that the previous post was signed by an IP address and not your username (not logged in). You seem to know the SF field, so if I may ask, I've been wondering lately who are the major authors in science fiction these days akin to the giants of the past eras (I haven't read good science fiction since Stephenson so am probably missing alot). Maybe you can get some more activity on Wikipedia from the L.A. group, SF fans seem to not edit Wikipedia as much as I'd assume. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:48, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

Hi Dan, thank you for the greeting and reminders. I will do my best to be good with attribution. I do remember the 10 percent rule about quoting copyrighted material. I followed that for a book I researched and wrote, and the articles I have written. I will try to do the same here. Did the webpage links work? They seemed to be fine. Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, PolyHistorian1. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Live The Dream: A Polyamory Educational and Support Group, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. Helpful Raccoon (talk) 22:54, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback. I can see that there can be a perception of conflict of interest here. I will keep these guidelines in mind during future efforts. PolyHistorian1 (talk) 19:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions to Live The Dream: A Polyamory Educational and Support Group. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability and it is promotional and reads like an advertisement. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. ... discospinster talk 03:30, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discospinster, thank you for your feedback. While I think the information is fairly reported in the article, your advice about more neutral wording to avoid looking like its an advertisement is important. On the subject of sources for notability- how many sources is considered necessary to establish that an entity or subject is notable? PolyHistorian1 (talk) 19:07, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There isn't a set number but I would say at least three independent sources that significantly discuss the organization. ... discospinster talk 20:46, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
