"Content notes" in Che Guevara and elsewhere
[edit]Thanks much for your helpful info re "content notes". I feel that since this format is apparently so rare in Wikipedia (and in other encyclopedias, for that matter), that we should make serious efforts to eliminate it. Please note again that I intend this as in no way a comment about content, but only about format. -- 201.19.15.178 13:19, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Captors and Captives 1704 cover.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Captors and Captives 1704 cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 09:29, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Caed Closeup by Peter Green HiRes.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Caed Closeup by Peter Green HiRes.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:41, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

problems with cnote
[edit]Hi Polaris, could you take a look at Auxiliaries (Roman military). We have problems with cnote there and can't figure out why. Many thanks.
Greetings Wandalstouring (talk) 16:46, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Wandalstouring,
- That was a really interesting problem causing the error messages in those three cnotes in Auxiliaries (Roman military). Turned out that it was the fact that the text entered for each of the three cnotes in question contained the character known as "equals sign", ie = . This character is used by the Wikipedia interpreter to delineate sections within an article and therefore apparently within a template it triggers special behavior and this special behavior was causing the three error messages. The solution for this is to not use the character for the equals sign but rather use its code, ie = . I have already replaced the equals sign character with = in the three content notes where it appeared in Auxiliaries (Roman military) and they now are working fine. If you would like to see how I found the source of the problem, you can take a look at my scratchpad at User:Polaris999/workspace/page28.

are you interested
[edit]in veropedia? It is a way of protecting articles from being trashed on Wikipedia. I recommended you to them. (Noticed that you made a Che edit.) Mattisse 01:22, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Mattisse -- Thank you for the information; I had never heard of veropedia before but will certainly take a look. As you may have noticed, I am generally not doing anything with the CG article here, but I made an exception in that one case since the error in question was extremely annoying. Best regards, Polaris999 (talk) 06:09, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hello again, Mattisse -- Just wondering if you have any clue as to what is causing the source notes in CG to be disordered? They all seem to be off by five ... -- Polaris999 (talk) 07:01, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe you fixed it, as they do not seem disordered to me now. Veropedia is a way of uploading Wikipedia articles to a place where they cannot be messed with: http://en.veropedia.com/ You have to join if you are going to edit there. Also, there are strict rules for articles. They have a parser that rules out obvious mistakes like 404 missing links and disambigs. If you have IRC, you can ask more about it at #veropedia. Or email the founder, dannyisme@gmail.com. I recommended you to him as an excellent editor. Mattisse 15:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- However, I should add that I am not completely clear about this veropedia effort, even though I have uploaded a few articles. See User:Angr/If. Also, there is a Wikipedia article, Veropedia. Mattisse 17:55, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Mattisse -- Thank you very much for recommending me to veropedia. I visited the site and it does look interesting, but think I will wait a while to see how it evolves. Meanwhile, I have been trying to figure out what is going on with the <ref></ref> source notes in CG. Reading about the cite.php footnote style, I have learned that having a named footnote as the first one (a situation that now exists in CG) disrupts the proper functioning of the <ref></ref> system. No reason for this is given, but it is recommended that such usage be changed. (See, for example, ✔ Propose revision of article source with named reference content in first position at User:CitationTool.)
- I am not sure what can be done about this except to break the multiple footnote apart ... I am not certain whether this is indicated since the malfunction is not superficially apparent, although I personally would prefer to make the correction because I dislike leaving bugs in situ. What do you think? -- Polaris999 (talk) 20:46, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
(unindent) I will ask User:Salix alba who understands such things better than I do and knows php. But the Citation Tool description does sound like there is a problem along the lines you describe. I have never done a cite.php and did not realize that it is a semi-bot.
However, I just now went through the intro and first section of CG and could see no problem with the footnotes or the cnotes. Everything seems to be in the right order and to reference correctly. So I am not clear where the problem is. However, in general, since CG has been relatively quiet and peaceful, I would suggest that if you want to fix something in the article just make really clear in the edit summary that you are fixing a technical problem ONLY and not changing context significantly if at all. Mattisse 21:21, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again, Mattisse and thank you for your reply. I am afraid that disordered-ness I am referring to is an unavoidable consequence of mixing named and unnamed footnotes. I decided to look around at a few featured articles to see if any of them were in the same condition and discovered an extraordinary manifestation of the problem in the Asperger syndrome article. There is real chaos going on there -- people who create these "multiple" footnotes don't seem to realize that once a footnote becomes "multiple", there is no way to for the reader to know which letter he needs to click on to get back to the point in the text where he was reading when he clicked on the footnote (since only the number of the footnote, not the letter, appears in the text). Maybe one day I will get around to separating out the multiples in CG so as to correct this problem, but for the time being I will leave it "as is" for the reasons you mention. -- Polaris999 (talk) 02:29, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- I asked User:Salix alba to look at it and all he saw was the missing ref left out by the editor putting the cigarette reference in (which in my mind doesn't belong there anyway). I put an old version of CG (before the Jimbo incident) through the veropedia parser and there is no way, without a lot of work, it could be uploaded to veropedia -- there are too many errors from veropedia's point of view. As you say, unless we had a clear plan and some support, there is no point in messing with the article and drawing attention to it. Mattisse 13:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, Mattisse -- The version of CG that you were parsing is in fact the one I also am interested in preserving (ie, the last one before the disruption caused by the visit of Jimbo). I would be interested in hearing what kind of problems veropedia has with it; if these problems (aka errors) involve a number of the questionable sources, its parser would be quite right to choke on those. As it happens, in almost all cases the questionable sources are providing questionable dis/information that got left in there because of the determination of a few editors to cast the worst possible light on CG. The article would be greatly improved if they were simply removed. I more or less have that specific version of the article memorized and it is not impossible that at some point in the not too distant future I might find the time to work with you and others similarly inclined to bring it up to veropedia's standards. Should we consider such a project? Polaris999 (talk) 22:03, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- I will put it through the parser again and see if I can relay to you some of the problems. Other than the Fair use images (which veropedia does not allow), the problems (from the parser's point of view) are with the sourcing of the references. Also, as I recall, some of them are dead or illegitimate links. I would be interested in working with it to get a respectable version of it somewhere. I am also looking in to Citizendium. Sentences
Please look into fixing the following, though you can still upload past it (it is recommended that you try to fix any legitimate errors).
- long sentence (58) : After serving in various important posts in the new government and writing a number of articles and books on the theory and practice of guerrilla warfare, Guevara left Cuba in 1965 with the intention of fomenting revolutions first in Congo-Kinshasa, and then in Bolivia, where he was captured in a military operation supported by the CIA and the U.S.
- long sentence (65) : Ernesto Guevara de la Serna was born in Rosario, Argentina, the eldest of five children in a family of Spanish and Irish descent; both his father and mother were of Basque ancestry.Basque[›] One of Guevara's forebears, Patrick Lynch, was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1715.Galway[›] He left for Bilbao, Spain, and traveled from there to Argentina.
- long sentence (54) : Guevara and the 29-year-old Granado soon set off from their hometown of Alta Gracia astride a 1939 Norton 500 cc motorcycle they named La Poderosa II ("The Mighty One, the Second") with the idea of spending a few weeks volunteering at the San Pablo Leper colony in Peru on the banks of the Amazon River.
- long sentence (62) : He also re-established contact with a group of Cuban exiles linked to Fidel Castro whom he had initially met in Costa Rica; among them was Antonio "Ñico" López, associated with the attack on the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" barracks in Bayamo in the Cuban province of Oriente, and who would die at Ojo del Toro bridge soon after the Granma landed in Cuba.
- long sentence (51) : The overthrow of the Arbenz regime by a coup d'état backed by the Central Intelligence Agency cemented Guevara's view of the United States as an imperialist power that would implacably oppose and attempt to destroy any government that sought to redress the socioeconomic inequality endemic to Latin America and other developing countries.
- long sentence (77) : Guevara wrote that it was during this confrontation that he laid down his knapsack containing medical supplies in order to pick up a box of ammunition dropped by a fleeing comrade, a moment which he later recalled as marking his transition from physician to combatant.Knapsack[›] Only 15–20 rebels survived as a battered fighting force; they re-grouped and fled into the mountains of the Sierra Maestra to wage guerrilla warfare against the Batista regime.
- long sentence (52) : Guevara became a leader among the rebels, a Comandante (English translation: Major), respected by his comrades in arms for his courage and military prowess, During the guerrilla campaign, Guevara was also feared for his ruthlessness, and was responsible for the execution of a number of men accused of being informers, deserters or spies.
- long sentence (70) : In the final days of December 1958, he directed his "suicide squad" (which undertook the most dangerous tasks in the rebel army) in the attack on Santa Clara that turned out to be one of the decisive events of the revolution (although the series of ambushes first during la ofensiva in the heights of the Sierra Maestra, then at Guisa—and the whole Cauto Plains campaign that followed—probably had more military significance).
- long sentence (62) : He was appointed commander of the La Cabaña Fortress prison, and during his five-month tenure in that post (January 2 through June 12, 1959), he oversaw the trial and execution of many people, among whom were former Batista regime officials and members of the "Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities" (a unit of the secret police known by its Spanish acronym BRAC).
- long sentence (79) : Later, Guevara became an official at the National Institute of Agrarian Reform,INRA[›] and President of the National Bank of Cuba.BNC[›] He signed all Cuban banknotes issued during his fourteen-month presidency with his nickname, "Che".Signature[›] Throughout his time in the Cuban government, Guevara refused his due salaries of office, insisting on drawing only his meager wages as army commandante in order to set a "revolutionary example".
- long sentence (57) : His disappearance was variously attributed to the relative failure of the industrialization scheme he had advocated while minister of industry, to pressure exerted on Castro by Soviet officials disapproving of Guevara's pro-Chinese Communist bent as the Sino-Soviet split grew more pronounced, and to serious differences between Guevara and the Cuban leadership regarding Cuba's economic development and ideological line.
- long sentence (81) : During their all-night meeting on March 14–March 15, 1965, Guevara and Castro had agreed that the former would personally lead Cuba's first military action in Sub-Saharan Africa.Algeria[›] Some sources state that Guevara persuaded Castro to back him in this effort, while other sources maintain that Castro convinced Guevara to undertake the mission, arguing that conditions in the various Latin American countries that had been under consideration for the possible establishment of guerrilla focos were not yet optimal.
- long sentence (54) : At one point Guevara had considered sending the wounded back to Cuba, then standing alone and fighting until the end in the Congo as a revolutionary example; however, after being urged by his comrades in arms and pressured by two emissaries sent by Castro, at the last moment he reluctantly agreed to leave the Congo.
- long sentence (81) : Because Castro had made public Guevara's "farewell letter" to him — a letter Guevara had intended should only be revealed in case of his death — wherein he had written that he was severing all ties to Cuba in order to devote himself to revolutionary activities in other parts of the world, he felt that he could not return to Cuba with the other surviving combatants for moral reasons, and he spent the next six months living clandestinely in Dar-es-Salaam, and Prague.
- long sentence (61) : Throughout this period Castro continued to importune him to return to Cuba, but Guevara only agreed to do so when it was understood that he would be there on a strictly temporary basis for the few months needed to prepare a new revolutionary effort somewhere in Latin America, and that his presence on the island would be cloaked in the tightest secrecy.
- long sentence (62) : At Castro's behest, a 3,700 acre parcel of jungle land in the remote Ñancahuazú region had been purchased by native Bolivian Communists for Guevara to use as a training area and base camp.Camp[›] The evidence suggests that the training at this camp in the Ñancahuazú valley was more hazardous than combat to Guevara and the Cubans accompanying him.
- long sentence (65) : The numerous photographs taken by and of Guevara and other members of his guerrilla group that they left behind at their base camp after the initial clash with the Bolivian army in March 1967 provided President René Barrientos with the first proof of his presence in Bolivia; after viewing them, Barrientos allegedly stated that he wanted Guevara's head displayed on a pike in downtown La Paz.
- long sentence (56) : On 17 October 1997, his remains, along with those of six of his fellow combatants killed during the guerrilla campaign in Bolivia, were laid to rest with full military honors in a specially built mausoleumMausoleum[›] in the city of Santa Clara, where he had won the decisive battle of the Cuban Revolution.
- long sentence (59) : American, Latin American and European writers, Jon Lee Anderson, Régis Debray, Jorge Castañeda and others contributed to demystify the image of Guevara via articles and biographies, which detailed his life and legacy in more unidealistic terms; and, in the case of Octavio Paz, was accompanied by a critical indictment of the Marxism espoused by many in the Latin American left.

- P.S. The "long sentence" issue is tolerated, although none that I have uploaded has had so many. Also, in discussing the uploading of complex articles with the veropedia people, they say that one way to do it is to work on your version in your sandbox. Then replace the real version on Wikipedia with your sandbox version long enough to upload it -- only a few minutes -- then revert the Wikipedia version back to its previous version. Mattisse 16:54, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, Mattisse -- Thank you very much for the veopedia results! Actually, the number of sources that need updating or other action is less than I had feared. I do believe that we can get the article into shape. Is there no way to work on the article once it has been uploaded "provisionally" to veropedia? No sandbox over there? Because I would really like to avoid having to overwrite the existing CG article, even for a brief time, if this can somehow be avoided ... Anyway, as time permits I will start working on it in my sandbox as you suggest and see whether I can find alternative sources for the ones that the parser identified as problematic. The photos that it has rejected do not seem to be of critical importance to me ... -- Polaris999 02:28, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Regarding editing on veropedia, once you are a member, you can edit. Veropedia is still in its formation stages. However, I went to my "userpage" there and made a link for myself that created another userpage for me. So, in that way a sandbox can be made. Mattisse 19:30, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, the parser is useful even if you are not going to upload an article, just to find those pesky mistakes. The parser, or course, is just a general deliminator for uploading to veropedia and does not denote article quality etc. Mattisse 19:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Che relief on MININD building.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Che relief on MININD building.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Agüeybaná 00:49, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

help
[edit]Can you help me write a short notice on how to use Template:Externalimages?
It should basically say:
If an image is available online, but cannot be uploaded to Wikipedia, it may be appropriate to use {{externalimages}} to provide a direct link to the image and a (referenced) description of what the image depicts.
Thanks a lot, somehow I became too stupid after stopping coding for wiki a year ago. Wandalstouring (talk) 14:11, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hello, User:Wandalstouring. I am very glad that you brought {{externalimages}} to my attention since I am sure that I will find it useful in future editing. Please take a look at User:Polaris999/workspace/page26 to see how I implemented it in a "test article". BTW I found the information re width and location of the linked-to image by placing my cursor over said image and right-clicking, then looking at its "Properties".
- I will work on writing the "short notice" off-line and then upload it as I have lost my high-speed connection and am depending on dialup which is showing me only fragments of pages and making it very hard for me to work online. I'll get it to you ASAP. Cheers! -- Polaris999 (talk) 18:46, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think that the "Purpose" section you have written is very clear and concise and that it provides an excellent explanation. I have created a slightly modified variation for your consideration, viz:
- When an image is available online but cannot be uploaded to Wikipedia, {{externalimages}} can be used to provide a direct link to the image and a (referenced) description of what the image depicts.
- I think that the "Purpose" section you have written is very clear and concise and that it provides an excellent explanation. I have created a slightly modified variation for your consideration, viz:
- {{Externalimages}} can be used multiple times in an article, and each implementation of {{Externalimages}} can be used to link to more than one image.
- I wonder if it might not be helpful to include an example, such as the one I made using the Deerfield image? Or perhaps a link to a WP article that employs {{externalimages}}? -- Polaris999 (talk) 19:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Dscoverche-gandhi.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Dscoverche-gandhi.jpg.
Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:06, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Feature article review notice
[edit]Che Guevara has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here.
- I think you and I are the only ones that can do it. We should just try to be a neutral as possible and not get bogged down into wording disputes. If there are complaints, then we can address them. I was shocked when I looked at the history of this article since January. Let's do what we can to address the FAR issues. I'm not in the mood to quibble over wording, as long as it is grammatically correct and not outrageously POV. Mattisse 23:23, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Moto Diary
[edit]Will you be moving the Motorcycle diary portion to that article ? I think it should be. Redthoreau (talk TR 23:09, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Hello Redthoreau. Since you wrote that section, I believe that you should be the one to transfer it to the "Motorcycle Diaries" article (after you have fixed it up per WP:MOS in a sandbox). -- Polaris999 (talk) 23:18, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
A lot has been accomplished
[edit]I am dropping out -- too many edit conflicts and frustration! But you are on the road to saving the article! Regards, Mattisse 02:44, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- You will return tomorrow, won't you?? I really appreciate all of the great work you have done thus far, but my guess is that the struggle is just beginning since we still have to deal with the POV issue, lead section, etc. I don't think that the article will make it through FAR without you!! -- Polaris999 (talk) 02:57, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Reverting
[edit]SandyGeorgia has suggested on Wikipedia:Featured article review/Che Guevara that the article be reverted to the original FA of 2006. What is your opinion? Mattisse 17:23, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I copied the 2006 version into my sandboxUser:Mattisse/other5. I do not see huge problems in restoring it, except for FAR upgrades. Glancing at it, the references still seem to be good and links working. The missing pictures could be easily added. Mattisse 19:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- I need a "time out" to reflect on all of this, so am just sort of watching from the sidelines at this point. As SandyGeorgia mentioned, we have 10+ days left to reach a decision so probably we can let things drift for a while and see how the situation develops... -- Polaris999 (talk) 23:59, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree the pressure is off. The original version is very good, though. Nice tight writing. You guys did a wonderful job. Mattisse 00:52, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- User:Blnguyen (bureaucrat/admin) just told me he thinks Redthoreau is a spa. I do too, looking at his edit history. Blnguyen has helped me before sock puppet situations. That means that Redthoreau would have to desist or be caught. I know that is only one POV battle. But I keep hoping that if we could just get a simple, accurate article together it would be worth it. I am tougher in dealing with editors than I used to be. (Perhaps you noticed!) Mattisse 02:35, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Matisse, a "spa" ? or a "sock puppet." I am unaware of what these names refer to, thus I can not respond in my own defense. In the future I would appreciate if you brought future allegations to me personally and allow me to respond, and not resort to sophmoric libel gossip, on others talk pages. Your recent edits
[edit]Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 22:49, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
New plans
[edit]Sandy has bowed out of doing the revert. However I do not see what is so hard about doing a revert. I think we should just do it anyway. The hard part is fixing the mistakes resulting from the changes since the older version. I believe we can handle all that between us, especially if you do the templates and such. I do not think updating the ihfobox is hard. What do you think? Mattisse 05:26, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- It was SandyGeorgia who was insisting on going back to the March 10, 2006 version; that was never my preference although I was willing to go along for the sake of "harmony". Now that User:Ronz and I have taken bold action to cleanup the existing version of the CG article, I think that we can work directly on it, obviating the need for a revert. BTW it is totally immaterial to me whether the article keeps its featured star or not, I just didn't want the featured star to continue to appear on an article that had deteriorated into such a substandard state. I will do what I can to improve the existing article but, as stated in the FAR, I will not become involved in POV issues. -- Polaris999 (talk) 20:27, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I admit I am a bit relieved myself. I agree with you re FA as I do not like many of their "standards" anyway. Now we can use the referencing system we want. I think I can handle the POV (I hope), as anything not well sourced goes. He was a many-faceted person; there is proof of that. We do not have to use him to prove one side or the other of anything today. Mattisse 21:33, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Absolute agreement. -- Polaris999 (talk) 21:37, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Egstimecover1960.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Egstimecover1960.jpg.
Thank you. BJBot (talk) 20:24, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Che!
[edit]Hi: I recognize that you've probably decided to give up on Che Guevara, but just in case you haven't, can I entice you back? I'm prepared to put in a bit of work (and you can see that I already have). I'd be delighted if you joined me. --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 10:43, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hello, jbmurray. Thank you very much for your invitation to become re-involved in editing the Che Guevara article, but as you correctly surmise I am unable to accept at this time. I might mention that I am in total agreement with your note on the Talk page about sources. I had utilized both the Castañeda and Taibo books, as well as many others, in my editing of the article during its "former life" -- and have watched with dismay as these references have been stripped away, one by one, converting it into little more than a badly written re-hash of the Anderson book. I hope that you will have much more success in your efforts to overcome its problems than I did. -- Polaris999 (talk) 13:41, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Heh. I hear ya, and apologies for the interruption. Oh well, "Be realistic. Ask the impossible." As someone once said. ;) --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 13:47, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and I should apologize if in getting rid of the "cref" format for "content notes" I upset the applecart as far as you were concerned. But it seemed the thing to do, especially given the current state of the article. Still, I suspect that was something you put a fair amount of time into, and so again, apologies. --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 13:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- No need at all to apologize, jbmurray! I rarely look at the article, but trust you made the right call in removing them given that its entire structure has changed since I created them for use in it so long ago. It is, incidentally, my fervent wish that every contribution I ever made to the CG article could be removed from its current "iteration", so please know that you have my a priori approval to extirpate part or all of any text written by me that may still remain in it, and that I will be grateful for your having done so :-) -- Polaris999 (talk) 15:36, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

CG Article
[edit]I appreciate and agree with your recent grammatical edits and hope you keep them up. I did have a question on your recent addition of a Spanish link to the Legacy article. I have done this in the past and always had them removed with people quoting wiki policy against it. Is it in fact a wiki policy that links should only be in the same language as the article itself ? Thanks. Redthoreau (talk) RT 07:07, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hello RedThoreau, and thank you for your message. The inclusion of foreign language external links seems to be anathema to some people, but here (below) is the best information I have been able to find in MOS concerning when they may be used. I hope that my inclusion of a link to that particular article which I deem highly important, but which I have not yet been able to find in English translation (still looking, however), falls within the framework of when the webpage contains key or authoritative information found on no English-language site and is used as a citation (or when translations on English-language sites are not authoritative). However, I do find the wording here quite confusing. What is your opinion?
=== Non-English-language sites === Webpages in English are highly preferred. Linking to non-English pages may still be useful for readers in the following cases:
In such cases, indicate what language the site is in. For example: You can also indicate the language by putting a language icon after the link. This is done using Template:Languageicon by typing {{Languageicon|<language code>|<language name>}}. Alternatively, type {{xx icon}}, where xx is the language code. See Category:Language icons for a list of these templates and the list of ISO 639 codes. Source: WP:MOSLINK:External links:Non-English-language sites |

- Update: I forgot to mention that I found this article "Monsignor Cespedes: Pope Respected Che" on the Prensa Latina website, but the English is so deficient as to render it virtually unreadable. -- Polaris999 (talk) 15:59, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- The policy does appear to be vague (perhaps intentionally). The usefulness of images and visuals would obviously cross the language barrier and thus be useful, but I am unsure of the value of text only in another language – as most Spanish speakers I am sure would be reading the Spanish wikipedia article on him instead. Hmm ... tough call. Redthoreau (talk) RT 18:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- But what about all of the readers of WP who, like us, speak both English and Spanish?
- How would you feel about just leaving the link there and waiting to see if anyone objects, and if they do, what reason they adduce? -- Polaris999 (talk) 19:23, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with that. Redthoreau (talk) RT 19:42, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

- Hello, Red, and thank you for your message. I am really involved in researching other topics these days and don't foresee doing anything more on the CG article except possibly one day updating the all-inclusive TOC for the Talk Page archives that I initiated a couple of years ago and have been maintaining since then. I find it more than a little ironic that complaints are now coming in saying that the article lacks the personal details about CG's life that I had included in the FA version but which we were told had to be eliminated when the article was "re-worked" several months ago (as I am sure you recall). If I could do anything I wanted to with the article at this point, it would be to replace it completely with a translation of the article in the Spanish wikipedia, ie Che Guevara article en español, the excellence of which you recently pointed out on the CG Talk Page. -- Polaris999 (talk) 20:01, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Che-firma.gif
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Che-firma.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:00, 16 April 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 08:00, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Was Che Guevara an artist?
[edit]I am doing some independent research on Che Guevara. Specifically his 'artistic' side. I've read in several books and in an interview, in 1969, I. Lavretsky did with Che's father, Don Ernesto Guevara Lynch, where Che's father stated, " Ernesto was also fond of art, had a good grasp of art history, and wasn't bad with watercolours." He also stated, "My son loved Impressionists above all." I am trying to confirm this statement, and, if in fact it is true, I would like to find out if any of his artwork survived the years, are there any pieces on display somewhere, perhaps a museum or gallery? Your research has reached many people and I'm hoping that perhaps someone out there might have information or can at least point me in the right direction. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.67.172.210.71 (talk) 01:30, 6 October 2013 (UTC)dappledonkey

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
