Rollback Request
Hello. As part of my work on the "maintenance" of Wikipedia I would like to start using Huggle to watch for and revert vandalism. You can see the kinds of things I'm interested in doing on Wikipedia on my talk page. Thanks for considering it! Livitup (talk) 01:56, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt reply! Livitup (talk) 16:18, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Horton
Must say I haven't come across Horton before - we call it "run-off" here in Australia - leading to flash floods. Im not sure that it makes sense to ask what the opposite is? I suppose it is infiltration. Perhaps there is a technical name for this that I've missed, like Morton. So then the opposite of Horton would be Morton - if you see what I mean. Sorry that is the best I can do. I'm having fun with Firefox and WikEd. Haven't really found a good account of Wikipedia's programming language for the starter, leading to advanced. Is there a simple introduction so that I can see how people do those snappy boxes and other page set-ups? Cheers for now. Granitethighs (talk) 03:21, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Templates
I am not an expert and I don't no how the bot is exactly works, but in Category:Portal-Class_Environment_articles I found that general category Category:Portal-Class_articles was absent. I added it. On the other hand Category:Disambig-Class_Environment_articles was Ok— it has several articles in it and it does not work. C-class I think should work though. Ruslik (talk) 19:31, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- In case you were wondering why Disambig, Template, Category, Redirect, and Portal-class don't appear in the statistics table for environment articles, it's because the Editorial Team bot doesn't keep track of those classes. Those are unofficial assessments not supported by the Editorial Team. The only official classes currently supported by the bot can be found on the full statistics table. You can continue discussion about adding more classes here, but I believe there's been reluctance adding non-article pages to the table. Best, --Jh12 (talk) 21:37, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks
Featured lists
I could not find any featured lists that could be part of WikiProject Environment's scope. Looks like we should get the Enviro lists up to scratch to meet the criterion for it. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 04:04, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
GA Sweeps
I am interested in participating in the GA Sweeps task force. I believe I have a good understanding of the GA criteria, having done a fair number of reviews, both passing and failing, several delistings, initiation of some GARs, and I am already informally "sweeping" GAs within projects I am a member of. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 06:19, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm interested in getting Carmelo Anthony promoted to GA status. Besides the trivia section, what else can I do to improve the article? Thanks. Chengwes (talk) 16:14, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

List of sustainability topics
Alan and OhanaUnited – I’ve got myself into strife in producing multiple pages for ‘’List of sustainability topics’’. At present my list is fairly short and can sit on one page but I had intended essentially gathering as many relevant articles as possible. I realise that there are many advantages in keeping lists short – also that categories contain basic lists that people can look up as well. Thing is, big lists also have many pluses too – they allow comparison, show up what can be merged and deleted, show quickly where there are areas of weak information and much more – they act like a vast table of contents and are great for research. Yes, you can use the search button but it really isn’t quite the same as a block list. Anyway – that’s not (altogether) what i want to ask you. What I want to ask you is this – you have both been at this game much longer than me. I have noticed that there is now a ‘’List of environmental topics’’, a ‘’List of conservation topics’’, ‘’List of sustainability topics’’. There is a lot of cross-over here. I know Alan would like to keep the environmental topics brief (is that right?) that is why I set up a lot of pages for ‘’sustainability topics’’ to take up the slack so-to-speak – a big job but I am prepared to undertake this. To cut to the chase:
1. Can you see or suggest any way of rationalising such similar lists or do you think we keep going as is?
2. Do you think it is worth while deciding – if only for Wikipedia purposes – what is the difference between sustainability, conservation, and environment as it relates to human impact (which is how the list of environment topics is presented) so that it is clear what each list covers. Or is that just too hopeful?
3. I could get the list on sustainability topics I want by gradually labelling every topic with ‘’category:sustainability topics’’ and that way could get a list by clicking ‘’What links here? ‘’ . But then perhaps that is best done by just using ‘’category:sustainability’’? The beauty of just collecting articles together as I originally intended is that entries do not have to be made on the article pages so that they are all linked ... but perhaps the linking is desirable.
Anyway – I’m just interested in your suggestions. Granitethighs (talk) 11:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
WP:HAU, Status, and you!
As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

GA sweeps
Hi, you've previously asked me to take part in the sweeps project. At the time I hadn't done that much reviewing, but I've reviewed a few since, like Talk:John Rutledge/GA1 (failed) and Talk:Flytoget/GA1 (passed). I'm not sure I'll have time for a lot of reassessing, but if you would like my help I might be able to do a handful now and then. Lampman (talk) 12:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Featured sounds
Hey, I don't know when you do the signpost work - if you let me know, I'll try and give you a summary for that day of the week - but it looks like one Featured sound promotion this week: Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/JFK inaugural address. There's a couple that might pass, but they're my candidates, so I'd probably contact you to close them anyway. =) Cheers! Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 21:08, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
- Just an update: This one of mine: Wikipedia:Featured_sound_candidates/Arthur_Sullivan_-_wax_cylinder_recording.ogg is currently ready to go, barring a sudden string of opposes or similar =) As it's mine, I don't mind waiting, so feel free to close it whenever the timing is convenient, e.g. to make sure a Featured sound goes into a certain signpost, that otherwise wouldn't have one. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 18:27, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

I am grateful for your confidence: My RfA passed by a count of 64/3/3, so I am now an administrator! Features and admins
When you write the Features and admins page for the Signpost, 1) where do you get the featured data, and 2) what time frame do you use? A new wikiglitch is causing problems with the archiving of WP:GO, so I'm considering no longer updating the page, but I'm not sure if anyone uses that page. Archiving WP:GO has always been a chore, now made worse by some programmer fiddling. If you do use WP:GO as the source of your data, why doesn't the timing on that page agree with the Signpost timing? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:56, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

GA Sweeps update
Thanks for updating the numbers. I've updated the charts as well, and I think it would be beneficial to mention in the newsletter that after a year of doing the Sweeps, we are over a third of the way done. By mentioning this, hopefully we can get some more interested reviewers to join in the process. As mentioned on the talk page, I'm done reviewing articles for now, but I think with more new people, we can hopefully get this done in less than 2 more years. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 06:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah I realize that, but with you being the GA Sweeps correspondent, I think it would be best for you to expand on the information. If you write a story for the column, I have no problems helping to copyedit it or expand it though. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 18:46, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- When is the next newsletter going to be sent out? I can probably write something later today about our progress so far, a basic introduction of Sweeps, and again, try to increase recruitment. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 18:57, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- I added a basic column for the next newsletter, if you can, see if there is anything else you want to include/take out. I really hope that we continue to get new editors reviewing or this is going to take a really long time. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 06:45, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

GA Sweeps team
Hello, I am interested in helping out with the GA sweeps. I am an experienced reviewer looking for something to contribute to Wikipedia in between writing articles. Please let me know if this works for you or if you need more information. Thanks, GaryColemanFan (talk) 15:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- A few examples of my GA reviews would be: Anstey Hill Recreation Park, Susianna Kentikian, and Loose (album). Please note that not all of my GA passes have been this detailed; these are just a few that I spent a lot of time on and come to mind immediately; an example of a shorter one would be Flocke. As for an article I've failed, I suppose Wilkins Peak would be a good example. GaryColemanFan (talk) 16:00, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I started vacations immediately after the poll finished. But I trust you guys to take care of everything. I saw your reply to Danny B and I agree with you. Anyway, we would never be able to make everyone happy about this, but honestly, I don't see why someone would take this issue so seriously... Also, I noticed that the portal has already been updated. When I come back, if there's anything else needing to be changed, I'll help on it. But for now I'll be away from the net (and wikimedia projects) for a while. I'll let you know when I come back. ...for participating in my RfA, which closed with 119 in support, 4 neutral and 5 opposes. I'm honestly overwhelmed at the level of support that I've received from the community, and will do my best to maintain the trust placed in me. I 'm also thankful to those who opposed or expressed a neutral position, for providing clear rationales and superb feedback for me to build on. I've set up a space for you to provide any further feedback or thoughts, should you feel inclined to. However you voted, thanks for taking the time out to contribute to the process, it's much appreciated. Kind regards, Gazimoff 22:33, 4 August 2008 (UTC) |
This one's now ready to promote. =) I am hoping that more people start nominating things and voting. It's a bit hard handling promotions if you can't touch half the things ready to be promoted, due to COI. Still, if the project's going to build, it has to be seen as active - and that trumps convenience. =)
By the way, I'd appreciate if you promoted this soon, rather than waiting on it, simply because there's a very good case for it being on the mainpage on August 14th - 120th anniversary. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 15:16, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
DYK item for newsletter?
I'm not really understanding this DYK item that you added to the newsletter:
- ... that GA Sweeps review all articles listed before 26 August 2007?
Do you mean that the sweeps reviews have already reviewed all articles listed before 8/26/2007, or do you mean that the goal of sweeps is to review all articles listed before then? Dr. Cash (talk) 18:23, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Xinjiang attacks
From a legal perspective, I am fairly confident that this would be classified as a terrorist attack under currently accepted usage of the term "terrorism". However, it's far from certain, since there is no internationally accepted definition of "terrorism", and Wikipedia's definition, though workable, is far from perfect. That is why I believe the only way to establish whether this is a terrorist attack or not is by reference to what people are calling it. If there are a few reliable sources calling it a terror attack, then that should be enough evidence. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 22:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I have a question for you. I was looking at an article created yesterday for Sebastian cole, and I can't find why he is notable. I tagged it CSD, and the author contested it. So can you take a look and see if he is notable (I don't believe so), and if not show me how to create an AFD for it. Block of Comayagua99
Can you take a look at the contributions and history for Comayagua99 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) a little closer? I think that user may be an innocent victim.
When Miamiboyzinhere showed back up yesterday, it looked like that was the account he targeted as a victim in his latest spree. I point out specifically my block of Comayuga (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and this edit where I gave the block notice and pointed out that the username similarity was part of the reason for the quick block.
If you're seeing something in 99's history that I'm not, please point it out. Otherwise, I fear an innocent got caught up in the latest sockpuppetry sweep. —C.Fred (talk) 03:28, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Given the number of edits 99 made to Miami, Florida, that could be skewing the count. Also, compare their edits from August 2007: completely different tone in their edits. I did see an overlap on 13 December 2007, but in that case, 99 was reverting an edit by Miamiboyzinhere!
- Looking back over the edits from over a year ago, I'm more convinced that they are not the same person. I still think he should be unblocked. If you're not comfortable unblocking 99, at least leave a message on his talk page explaining the block—under which I'll leave a dissenting opinion and an invitation for him to request an unblock. —C.Fred (talk) 03:53, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- The problem is, the report was filed based on username similarity. Nine times out of ten, that is a sign of sockpuppetry. I think this case was the exception. Also, if I'd thought they were socks, this account would have been blocked yesterday. Thank you for looking into it further, and happy editing! —C.Fred (talk) 04:29, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I looked at the edits, and they seem to support the argument that the similarly-named accounts were obvious sockpuppets who were also working against User:Comayagua99, as for example here and here. I think that User:Comayagua99 may be an innocent victim here, though I wholeheartedly support the block of the remaining similarly named users. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 12:15, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Featured Sounds this week
Just a heads up: There's going to be something like 15, 20 Featured sounds this week. I'll list them here as they get promoted, but do expect more to keep coming. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 20:47, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, this is definately the week FS comes into its own. The nominations really started to take off on the 14th, which means they could only start being promoted yesterday (because of the 14-day rule) - so I suppose how many appear in the signpost will depend on where the cutoff falls. But yeah, we can expect a lot more featured sounds in future. Depending on how you want to count the "sets" - you know, where all the movements of a symphony, say, are nominated together? - we could end up pretty ridiculous in count.
Okay, here's the first set:
- Margaret Woodrow Wilson - The Star-Spangled Banner (nom)
- Au Clair de la Lune (1860) (nom)
- Papua New Guinean Mask Dance (nom)
- Neville Chamberlain announces Britain is at war (nom)
- Statement by the President in his Address to the Nation, September 11, 2001 (nom}
More later. The set of theme and six variations needs dealt with still, and then there's tomorrow's. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 03:04, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Three more:
- Ludwig van Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata. 1. Adagio Sostenuto 2. Allegretto 3. Presto agitato (nom)
I'm supposed to be promoting a set of 11 and a set of 5 or 7 today, but... that will wait. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 06:17, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
11 more:
Antonio Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni). Performed by the Wichita State University Chamber Players; violin, John Harrison
- (Spring No 1 was already a featured sound, but the other 11 parts were just promoted.)
- Spring, 2: Largo
- Spring, 3: Allegro
- Summer, 1: Allegro non molto
- Summer, 2: Adagio
- Summer, 3: Presto
- Autumn, 1: Allegro
- Autumn, 2: Adagio molto
- Autumn, 3: Allegro
- Winter, 1: Allegro non molto
- Vivaldi Winter, 2: Largo
- Winter, 3: Allegro

Good luck figuring out how the hell to format that =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 18:10, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
1 more:
6 more: Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B flat (D. 935/3; Op. 142 No. 3)
Theme:Andante Variation I Variation II Variation III Variations IV through VI
Complete version: Theme and Variations I through VI
Nom: Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Schubert - Impromptu B-flat
Again, good luck =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 18:43, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
There's a proposal up to redduce it to 10 days, but I haven't gotten any feedback yet. Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 10:04, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

New job
Hi OhanaUnited - understand fully about the Olympics, I've been caught up in it myself quite a bit as Aussies are devoted to their sport. I am happy to soldier on with the editing, that's fine. The new job sounds extremely interesting and will stand you in good stead for the future I'm sure - you might well get into a position where you have real influence. Thanks for your help as a tutor in Wikipedia things, I'm beginning to get the hang of it. Granitethighs (talk) 21:19, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Your message on my page
what the heck? I removed a bunch of dead discussions, repeated 'i can't edit' and repeated dodgy requests for neg critisism that didn't even get close to any of wikipedias policies. As for 'not being favourable to you' I have no clue what on earth you mean by that. Please explain how the removal of people asking for links to the runescape wikia, game change consolidations, adding in an RS history, and mentions of RS merchandise is favourable to me.FlashNerdX (talk) 15:32, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Hello
I would like to know if you intend to respond to my comments about your accusations, or if you plan on leaving the situation as it is with no further comments. I enquirer purely to know the situation rather than to place any sort of time constraint upon your response (mostly cause it would be rude, also because it would stupid), although if you do have an idea of when you may be responding then that would be grand.
Basically I'd like to resolve this in a civil manner and wish to know if your willing to do the same.FlashNerdX (talk) 17:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Congrats on the new job!
Is there any chance of either a) resolving the issue of your threat to ban me for following wiki policy or b) you rescinding the threat? I would rather not have it left hanging unresolvedFlashNerdX (talk) 13:53, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Four featured sounds

Rollback request
Hello. In my almost exact year as an active contributor to Wikipedia I have began to notice (and revert) a lot of senseless vandalism that is blatantly non-productive and would like to extend this to being able to use Rollback. Thanks for your consideration and have a great day. :) Taifarious1 04:14, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
RuneScape Community
Do you by any chance have an account on the forementioned forum? I seem to remember through my days of activity there, a member who had a username very similar, if not the same, as your Wikipedian one. I believed that particular account was active in the RSC Clan section. If I'm making no sense whatsoever, apologies. I must have got the wrong person. But if you do happen to be that person, hai :-). - Gave a small reply on my talk page, thanks anyway. Regards, A Prodigy Sign Here/Contact 17:02, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
One featured sound
Really ill, so I'm rather behind, in all honesty. There should be a lot more. Oh, well. =/ Feel free to quote me on that if the total comes out really low or something.

There were some similarities, enough that I thought it was worthwhile having someone with more access investigate. The user is a vandal-only account in any case. Cheers, thanks. Prince of Canada t | c 05:01, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
