Hi. Would you be able to close this/give a final review? It's the oldest GAN left, and I'm just picking one of the many people who left a review on it. If not I'll try and find another reviewer out of the batch. I'd review it myself but I have too many tagged at GAN and am overburdening myself as it is. Sorry fellow Wikipedians. I was ticked at the snobbery of our nation (Canada). Most of us Canadians are conservatives at heart. At least it's in the edit history that a few aren't.

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you had time to read over and copy edit Neighborhoods of Davenport, Iowa and could provide suggestions before I consider submitting it for GA. Thanks, CTJF83 chat 04:10, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing, I'll take a look at it later today. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 14:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! CTJF83 chat 21:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm looking at this now, and I see an inconsistency I'm not sure how to resolve: the lead states "five areas for neighborhoods: downtown, central, east end, near north and northwest, and west end", while the article structure suggests "divides the city into five areas for neighborhoods: downtown, central, east end, near north, and northwest and west end". Which is correct? Nikkimaria (talk) 21:36, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
northwest and west end together should be one of the areas, thanks for the catch. CTJF83 chat 21:41, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. I've gone through the article and done some copy-editing, but there are a few places where I wasn't sure exactly what you were trying to say. Could you go through and a) make sure I haven't changed your intended meaning in any way, and b) see if you can make the article clearer, especially for non-locals? Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 22:05, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the copy edit, I really appreciate it. Do you have anything specific that needs to be made clearer? Since I am a local, it might be hard for me to realize it. I'm headed off for a bit to take some pictures for other articles before it gets too dark, but will be back on in a while. Thanks again! CTJF83 chat 22:16, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Couple of examples of things that could be clarified: "The significance of this neighborhood derived from the west end German-American community" - significance? "five-points" - what is this? Nikkimaria (talk) 23:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, clarified those two, I'll have to reread it to see if I can find anything else. CTJF83 chat 23:16, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations

Congratulations, I have promoted Manitoba to Featured Article status! I'm impressed with how well you handled your first FAC nomination - many first nominations (especially those on geographic locations) are not promoted, and many nominators have trouble dealing with the constructive criticism. Thank you for being so receptive to feedback, and for working with nominators to improve an already well-done article. I hope that we see you at FAC again soon! Assassination of Franz-Ferdinand GA

[edit]

Thanks for contacting me, I am afraid I have been away from Wikipedia for a year. The article has had some nice pictures added but the text has gradually deteriorated. I had done a very careful job of footnoting every controversial fact including checking the sources sources, that is to say if Albertini was drawing on Magrini or Documents Francaise, I got someone to translate Magrini for me into English as a double check and for amplification and similarly for the French telegram. ...and I made sure that the summaries were in agreement with the details. Now, the summaries are out of agreement with the details in the article (for example the summary says that the first bullet hit Sophie and the second hit Franz-Ferdinand [this is a politically popular] but the body of the article citing Albertini has the sequence the other way around) and a few inaccuracies have been introduced (for example the article used to say that Pasic became a caretaker prime minister, but now it says he became a "puppet" prime minister of the military which is absolutely false; Pasic and the military were at "daggers drawn" at the time) and there are some points of contraversy unfootnoted,so I agree it is not a GA now. Frankly, because of the controversial nature of the material it feels like a hopeless task. It will take perhaps 12 hours of effort to get the text fixed up back to where it was on Feb 10 or so last year, and then there will be a long-long period of challenges by other Wikipedians who have read something light on the subject or who see things through the colored lense of their own nationalism. Anyway, thank you for your attention to the article.Werchovsky (talk) 00:20, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to mention the edits since February 10, 2009 also added broken links to tables that previously had only good links. Would you mind looking at the February 10, 2009 article and let me know if this is closer to GA material? Werchovsky (talk) 01:25, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just now found the rather long list of problems you wrote up about the article. You must have put a lot of effort into it. Thank you so much. I will work on the valid concerns based on the February 10, 2009 version, and explain why some concerns, from my point of view, do not apply to the February 10, 2009 version or are otherwise not valid or the result of misunderstandings.Werchovsky (talk) 01:25, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am still running down citations. A few of them I can't find and I may need to delete statements. ...but I have glanced down to the next set of issues "neutral point of view" and I have some concerns:
1) The only words I could find on the discouraged words list that were used in the article as of February 10, 2009 were related to the word "terror". The Military History reviewer agreed that the "Black Hand" could be referred to as a terrorist organization as they considered themselves as such. Likewise quotes of the terrorists referring to themselves and each other as terrorists was acceptable. Beyond that, one use of the word "terrorist" was allowed to be used referring to the self-avowed terrorists as an alternative to assassins, youths, etc. Is this one use of the word terrorist the problem or something else?
2) You wrote a long series of statements that "need to be edited". The first was "false charges". "False" was a very bland description of the charges based on Mackenzie's work on the subject. We can add a footnote referring to Mackenzie who demonstrated the trial was fatally flawed due to court packing (fire the normal judge panel and replace with the defendants long time enemies), prohibiting the defense from calling witnesses, prohibiting the defense from choosing their attornies, prosecution witnesses caught in lies, all charges dropped in mid-trial and replaced with charges of a new and unrelated crime and the (in most cases posthumous) retrial and acquittal of all defendants. The trial was a true Kangaroo Court. So, are you flexible on the need to edit some of these or can they just be footnoted?66.166.239.68 (talk) 22:24, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I read your comments of 27 March but I have no idea how to apply them to "terror" and "false charges". I thought if we had a mutual understanding on these two, many of the other issues would be easier to understand. Another approach would be to follow the examples of two violent political GAs 9/11 and Shining Path for how they use "terror", etc.Werchovsky (talk) 17:53, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made edits addressing most of the issues you raised with the article "The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand". Some of the issues cannot or should not be addressed. For example, several of the references have no ISBN numbers (published in 1966 or earlier) and so their ISBN numbers cannot be added. Other issues not fully addressed may need some deep discussion. On the comments page I jotted down some notes about what was changed, or if not changed, why not.Werchovsky (talk) 21:43, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go

[edit]
First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.

We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns.

See you at the finish!

Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

[edit]
GAN backlog elimination drives chart up to 1 May

On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.

  • 661 total nominations were reviewed. 541 of them passed (~81.8%), 97 (~14.7%) failed, and 23 (~3.5%) ended on hold.
  • The WP:GAN page started at 110,126 bytes length on 1 April and ended at 43,387 bytes length at the end of 30 April (a 66,739 byte reduction in the page, about 60.6% less).
  • Excluding extremes, the longest wait for someone's GAN to be review was about 11.5 weeks at the beginning. (I mistook the figure when I reported to the Signpost that it was 13.) At the end, with the exception of one that was relisted, the longest wait is now at 10 days.
  • 63 different users participated, each having completed at least one GAN, with others also having helped out behind-the-scenes in making the drive a success.
  • The drive started with 463 GA nominations remaining and 388 unreviewed. At the end of the month, we ended with 89 remaining (374 or about 80.8% less) and 47 unreviewed (341 or about 87.9% less).

For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia.

FAC National Treasures of Japan

[edit]

Hi Nikkimaria! Time permitting, could you have a quick look at the FAC of National Treasures of Japan. We are almost done copy-editing the article and fixing the issues you mentioned in the review. Still to be done is the image stacking problem in the categories section which does not appear on our screens. Could it be fixed with "{{-}} (which create extra white space) at the end of every section or how do you think about removing all of the images in that section (images are available through the linked list articles)? bamse (talk) 11:49, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For comparison, I copied the categories section to my sandbox and modified it in two ways: (i) no images, (ii) clearing, i.e. {{-}} after every subsection. Please let me know which of these looks best on your screen or if you have another suggestion on how to get rid of the bunching. From what I understand image galleries are not too popular within featured articles, so that's not an option. bamse (talk) 17:58, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for volunteering to help with that Good Article student assignment project. This is just the heads up that students have begun to work on the article.
