reminder to mentor

[edit]

Hola Mentors!

Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors

Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.

I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so they need to be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!

Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 19:11, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter[reply]

Question About Deletion

[edit]

hi, my freind (username Danellery) and i (username arj00) created a page "North to East Umpiring Association" which was deleted recently:

15:57, 31 August 2007 Nihiltres (Talk | contribs) deleted "North to East Umpiring Association" ‎ (CSD A7 (Corp): Article about an organization that doesn't assert significance)

I am writing to you in hope that you will restore this page, as it assertes high significance. This is the major umpiring association in Adelaide, Australia which provides umpires for many Australian Rules Football matches keeping up community spirit in the area. It has 6 leagues which it manages umpires for. It is an important organisation and is affiliated with the:

AFL (Australian Football League) the national league of Australian rules football & SANFL (South Australian National Football League) the state league of Australian rules footy.

I am an umpire for the North to East Umpiring Association and put in a lot of effort into making this page, so i ask that you restore it. IF not, please give a reason and/or help & ideas for me to re create the page.

Thankyou User; arj00 on 1/9/07

Hello Nihiltres,
I am writing in regards to the deletion of my East to North Umpiring Association page. I added it to the league of umpiring associations page under South Australia. Which was not there. I then, yesterday, went into the page and it said it had been deleted.
The association is part of the AFL umpires development program and it spreads itself out throughout about 6 associations in the Adelaide Area. I had a look at the other wiki's on the umpire association page that you made, and they dont look any more 'significant' than the page I made.
Can you please inform me why it does not assert significance, or even place the page back onto the Australian umpiring association page.
Regards
Daniel Ellery

--comment moved to appropriate section and indented

Will double-check this deletion in a moment. :) Nihiltres(t.l) 02:19, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that you should each read about Wikipedia's notability guideline - the deletion looks fine. Nihiltres(t.l) 14:33, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is quite disappointing to see the page delated, and with it our local community spirit for football, especially when the assocation is linked with many important bodies around Australia. Also when pages similar to this one are kept, it is quite saddening. I am sure that we assert high significance as explained above.

thankyou arj00

The deletion doesn't stop you from recreating the page with citations from reliable sources. If you were able to provide references, the article would stand a good chance of survival. Nihiltres(t.l) 11:24, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thank you nihiltres, but then could you please send the content of the page back to us, so we do not have to retype all the information, and can just add some citiations.

thankyou

arj00

Done - I moved the page to User:Danellery for you and your friend to work on. Good luck, Nihiltres(t.l) 05:00, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the help mate

Question About Deletion

[edit]

I was searching for a game that a couple of my friends and I have played called "Crap in the Hole". I saw that you recently deleted the page.

03:40, 26 August 2007 Nihiltres (Talk | contribs) deleted "Crap in a Hole" ‎

I was thinking about starting the page back up, but wanted to see if you could tell me more about why it was deleted, or maybe set it back up for proposed deletion so I could fix any potential errors with it so it could be a valid article.

Thanks Caesar Caesarblue

When I deleted it, it was deleted by proposed deletion (prod), as you mentioned. The user who tagged it left the concern "Unreferenced game (WP:MADEUP)", and I'm inclined to agree that without references, it probably wasn't the greatest of articles. Since it isn't an issue, though, I can undelete the page and move it to your userpage for you to fix up, if you like? It might be better off, though, moved to, say, Wikibooks than as an article on Wikipedia (frankly, it's likely to be deleted again, on Wikipedia). I might be able to help you with that, though I have no experience yet with the transwiki system. Nihiltres(t.l) 02:42, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

userspace layout

[edit]

Hi Nihiltres. I really like your userspace layout, and was wondering (if you don't mind other people using it) whether you have the raw code avaliable so I could use it on my space. You could either give me a link or stick it in my user:Matthewedwards/Sandbox, if it isn't too much trouble. Regards -- Matthew Edwards 23:16, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It'll need a bit of tune-up to be useable for another user (some of the code is specific to me and needs to be manually changed), but I can certainly make a virtual copy for you. It'll be fun. :) Nihiltres(t.l) 02:49, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Nihiltres. It looks great. You're right about the archive - I don't need that just yet! With regards to putting a copy of the main user page into my sandbox, I'd really appreciate that. Thankyou again. -- Matthew Edwards 20:47, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I don't mean to press you, but are you close to having a layout template made? :)-- Matthew Edwards 17:33, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nihiltres! I am usure why you deleted my Actorfest page. It is an event that is important to the performing arts community and should have its description posted on Wikipedia. If I am writting this incorrectly, please let me know and I would be happy to fix. If the Los Angeles Film Festival can be posted, then so should Actorfest. Please confirm the reason for deletion and let me know how I can fix it. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.198.92.142 (talk) 16:19, August 31, 2007 (UTC)

The article was deleted because it was overly promotional of the event: material which is overly promotional is subject to speedy deletion under speedy deletion criterion G11. I noted this in the deletion log, and you can see there that it was deleted under criterion G11 once before: the previous deletion cited template {{db-spam}}, a tag used to mark pages for G11. Since you assert the importance of your subject, I recommend you read Wikipedia:Your first article to get a sense of what's appropriate here. If you need further help, feel free to ask. Nihiltres(t.l) 16:27, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I posted it and it was deleted, I read the article you recommend and I thought I rewrote it not to be promotional. Please let me know what you find promotional so I can fix it. I thought it was simply fact driven. What are your suggestions for a re-write? Thanks!

Hello - Can you please let me know how to proceed. Thanks.Bold text

One of the best ways to help yourself rewrite the article and have it remain undeleted is to use the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process, which will pass the article by a number of Wikipedians who can help you rewrite it. I'm afraid I've been somewhat busy lately, sorry for the delay. Nihiltres(t.l) 16:53, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contest Lock+Load deletion; request appeal

[edit]

Nihiltres,

Before going into my argument, please understand that I am not hostile in the least, I am amenable to complying with constructive criticism, and I am more than willing to make changes as you deem appropriate. Additionally, I have refined my work since last night's deletion in an effort to further improve the article's objectiveness.

Also, after its first deletion, I discussed the matter with "Nucleusboy" who first tagged the article for speedy deletion and made significant changes based to his feedback.

I've reviewed Wikipedia's guidelines defining "spam" and I believe my article not to be spam as Wikipedia defines it. Below, I've copied and pasted Wikipedia's official guidelines making some comments in between.

There are three types of wikispam: advertisements masquerading as articles,

(this article's primary objective is to document the tremendous recent improvement in the world of sports nutrition and I was careful not to make claims without presenting scientific evidence--for the most part, the article talks about internal metabolic science; it never discusses brand marketing)

wide-scale external link spamming,

(there are no external links on this article)

and "Wikipedian-on-Wikipedian" spamming or, "canvassing" (also known as "internal spamming" and "cross-posting").

(I plan on adding some internal links, but they will all go to other Wiki articles that already exist which discuss legitimate scientific concepts and nutrients; currently, very few links do exist which rules it out for this type of spam)

Articles considered advertisements include those that are solicitations for a business product or service,

(in no way do I solicit the reader to buy anything, I only inform)

or are public relations pieces designed to promote a company or individual.

(this article is not written in language the general public could understand and as such would make a lousy PR piece; my motivation is to inform)

Wikispam articles are usually noted for sales-oriented language and external links

(as noted, the language is definitely not sales oriented and there are no external links)

to a commercial website. However, a differentiation should be made between spam articles and legitimate articles about commercial entities.

In conclusion, I'd like to stress that the concepts this article discuses are based on new and exciting evidence. A decade's worth of scientific research has gone into producing a finished product and instead of touting superficial characteristics, I exclusively discuss the science behind it, citing many high quality resources as is appropriate with a encyclopedic article.

Finally, I'd like to point out that one of the benefits of an encyclopedia that has the capacity to be constantly edited and updated is that it stays extremely pertinent, topical, and cutting-edge. As this subject is the newest advancement in nutrition, in order for the encyclopedia to fully realize its potential as cutting-edge, articles like mine must be allowed. My article does not document history; rather it documents the state-of-the-art, which I believe is worthy of Wikipedia.

Thank you for you time and concern regarding this matter. I await your feedback.

--Spiralnotebook 00:20, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So you're telling me that a movie like "Balls of Fury" has a place on Wikipedia, a movie that hasn't even made it to theaters yet, is obviously in poor taste, and desperately needs to an advertisement on Wikipedia, but Lock+Load does not? --Spiralnotebook 11:11, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I've been somewhat busy outside of Wikipedia, sorry for the delay. I deleted the article because it was blatantly promotional, regardless of what references were backing it up or the method used to make the promotional statement. For example, the second paragraph of the article:

To begin, promotional statements are scattered throughout the text. "Since Lock+Load is the first peptide + carbohydrate drink of its kind, its active nutrient delivery to athletes represents a significant advancement in sports nutrition" is a prime example of a blatantly promotional sentence, and I, among other Wikipedians, will not tolerate those. Second, each of the sources you cite (I skimmed through them, and I note those examples from the quoted text above) are primary sources, which aren't appropriate given our policy against original research. While I admire your zeal in obtaining references, these are, unfortunately, not appropriate. Third, although it might be argued that the article itself is not an obvious advertisement, the overall focus on promoting and describing the advantages of "Lock+Load", even scientifically, is overly promotional for Wikipedia. I uphold the deletion as is. Nihiltres(t.l) 17:39, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Would you mind undeleting my profile, so that I can trim it down to be in conformance with Wiki policies. Thanks in advance! David Bergmann

P.S. I am amazed at how many articles you have deleted! Where do you find the time?

I'm not sure that's such a good idea, we generally frown on people editing articles about themselves. As for the number of deletions, well, it's a specialty of mine. Most of them take a minute or less - we get a lot of spam and nonsense articles inserted which obviously need to be removed, and there's always people claiming that their friend, company, or organization is notable, despite that there are no reliable sources to back up those claims. It might be most clear if I explain that adminship on Wikipedia is sometimes called "the mop" (). Nihiltres(t.l) 14:30, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously someone trying to be me. Annoying, stupid, and an easy way to get blocked. I added a "Block" to scare the person, but please get to the bottom of this. Thank you very much.

Page Protection

[edit]
Hello,
Can you explain why did you protec Plano Collor page?Ludovicapipa yes? 12:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I protected the page because it appeared that there was edit warring going on on the page, as you may be able to see in the page's history. I do not endorse either the version on which it was protected, any former version, or the dispute itself. I intend the protection as a cool-down period during which to discuss the problems raised rather than disruptively continuing to revert changes. Nihiltres(t.l) 14:12, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Kiefer:
Don´t you think political matters are TOO emphsized here? The article is abt and economic plan. All references to its economic policies were deleted by the user. And wihtout ask, discuss nor justify, he requested a page protection.

Carefull with his request!
As you can see here, he agrees that Color ended hyperinflation [[2]]

Deletion question

[edit]

Could you please tell me why was A metal tribute to abba page deleted.18:33, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

It was deleted because it provided little or no context - another user tagged it as such, and since it didn't give context, I deleted it. I recorded this fact in the deletion log for that deletion. Nihiltres(t.l) 02:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

INVOLVE (UK National Advisory group)

[edit]

Hi please could you tell me why this page was deleted? I see that it was reported by CorenSearchBot as containing substantial copy from www.invo.org.uk, which it does as it contains our mission statement and working brief. INVOLVE (UK National Advisory Group) is a Department of Health Funded, not-for profit organisation. Can the page be re-instated? Thanks Gill

The problem here is that the text on your website is labelled as "Copyright © 2004 INVOLVE. All Rights Reserved", which is not allowed on Wikipedia, which uses the GFDL for all text, as you can see at the bottom of the page. If you're interested in licensing the text under the GFDL, I would recommend reading Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials and changing the text at the bottom of the page to explicitly show that the text is licensed under the GFDL. Further, you say "our mission statement", which leads me to believe that you're part of the organization. As such, you should read our conflict of interest guideline - anyone editing articles with whose subject matter they have a substantive relation to should be aware of this guideline, even if they wouldn't violate it anyway. Given the copyright concerns, I'll leave the article deleted for now (copyright violations, even willing ones, are taken very seriously on Wikipedia), but if that problem can be solved, I wouldn't have a problem with further review. Flying Jake

[edit]

You recently deleted Flying Jake as a CSD A7 (Bio). However, it is clear that the article was about a children's book, not a person. Indeed, this book was reviewed in the New York Times, has been taught in several classrooms [3], [4], is included in the book Literature of Delight: A Critical Guide to Humorous Books for Children, and is available in 191 libraries [5]. I don't think this should have been speedied, let alone as a non-notable bio. Zagalejo^^^ 02:23, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
