GOCE March drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

Life Metal

I have seen this edit on my watchlist. Life Metal is a term used by members of the Black Metal scene for bands with a Death Metal style that don’t worship death but sing about fun or social issues etc.; but I have also seen it being used for Graveland (NS/Pagan Metal band) and Nargaroth (no death worship either; by the way, I had to undo edits there myself), which are both not Satanic and therefore no true Black Metal bands (I hope you know that this is the traditional definition of Black Metal and that you won’t reply to my explanation with that whole “genre warrior” bullshit like some other users did). --217/83 12:35, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

My intentions were not to update everything. So what shall we do bout the drums?October 010 (talk) 22:32, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm not disputed anything you have said which is probably right but what you hav said is like also asking why when album says on article its released for example in aug 1999 but recorded in feb 1999, why would that be posted. I believe it shows the timeline of the album because the recording i believe is more important than the release because the recording was obviously first before the release in a way showing the release doesn't even matter.October 010 (talk) 19:14, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)

Hi there. Would you mind having a look at this for me - Impiety (band)? I'm having some difficulties explaining the concept of WP:RS to an anon user who has just contravened 3RR. Cheers, Blackmetalbaz (talk) 13:02, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

A couple things:

  1. I'm sorry you've had no luck at ANI with that IP, but I saw that you reposted it, and I'll continue to try to help if I can with that.
  2. Thanks for your help/comments regarding Alice In Chains and genre related stuff.
  3. I felt like this conversation may be of interest of you. It's nothing too major, and I've already tried to "clear your good name", but I figured you may want to say something too, (and I'd want to know if it were regarding me.) It's at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Metalvayne#Highly_unlikely... Sergecross73 msg me 14:28, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

IP #90

Wow, you're right. They appear to be extremely irritating! I'd not particularly noticed any particular set of IPs until you mentioned it, but yes, it would be nice if a range-block were possible. I have no idea whether that is technologically feasible though. But then, I'm one of those people that thinks everyone should have to sign up to edit. It would cut down the vandalism and genre-warring to a massive degree. Blackmetalbaz (talk) 11:25, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Citing websites

Hi there. I was reading the Weather Systems (Anathema album) article, and checked out the citations provided. I wonder if you know of Template:Cite web, it provides formatting to supply citations from websites. (I know it is highly unlikely given your veteran editor barnstar, still)(Oops, posted on User page instead of Talk, fixed) :) Easwarno1 (talk) 22:58, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Cool. I just figure that the cite web template provides more organization to a citation and provides a set of attributes that can be searched for by future editors when link-rot occurs. To each their own though, I guess. Easwarno1 (talk) 01:13, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

I seem to have had a very productive email exchange with Sky Broadband's abuse line, and they say they have suspended the user in question. Please let me know if his activities start up again. Someguy1221 (talk) 18:45, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey, that's awesome! Thanks a lot for the help, and I'm glad that the exchange with Sky Broadband was productive. I can be a little more at ease now. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 21:39, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Guy that called Wolves in the Throne Room a hipster band

...Why could I not stop laughing at your revert? I feel that was definitely trolling • GunMetal Angel 08:56, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I was directed by TParis related to this article: Should I take it to DRV since the article didn't changed it that much since the last AfD? (or is it even a G4?) The article in question was not deleted after the AfD, but moved to the Incubator and since a few days it was moved back to mainspace. As I said the page didn't improved that much... mabdul 21:02, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello, and sorry for my late response. You could try to put it up for deletion review if you want to, but the person behind this article would probably have to know about that. About the previous AFD, I was not aware of that before you had brought it up on my talk page. The source citation for the Common Dead page could use some improvement, and I don't know how many sources are reliable. Thank you for the message. May 2012

I have a specific issue with anon IP editing to the Sylosis article. As usual it is genre warring. Band is sourced as a number of specific genres in reliable sources, but a number of anon IPs seem to want to draw me into a slow-motion edit war. Obviously, I am unprepared to do this, so your input would be welcomed; a general revert to sourced content and semi-protection strikes me as appropriate, but that is an admin decision to make. GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Discussion input request

Hi,

Last month I moved the list of experimental metal artists to its own list. Some of the entries have been challenged, and the discussion has stalled, as only me and the challenging editor have commented. I really don't care if the entries stay or are removed, I just want to get some third opinions. Check the talk page for the discussion. Oh, and King Crimson is one of the entries involved. Since you seem to do a lot on Wikipedia about this band, I thought that this might interest you.

Thanks, --¿3family6 contribs 20:12, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Nomination of Funeral (band) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Funeral (band) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Funeral (band) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. meco (talk) 21:26, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey Backtable. So, kind of funny, I responded to a question you posed almost three years ago at the Signify talk page, and I thought I'd let you know, since its been so long, that I actually provided some thoughts in response. I don't know if you remember asking, still care anymore, or maybe found an answer long ago, and I'm wrong, but I thought I'd throw that out there, in case I could be helpful, or if you could correct me if you had found out otherwise in the meantime. Let me know. Thanks! Sergecross73 msg me 17:59, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Your request to block 24.56.44.192

Hi. I declined your request to block this IP. It wasn't clear to me that this person was editing in bad faith -- is there more to this story that I don't know? I see you gave him two pretty severe warnings then asked to have him blocked.

Thanks for clarifying for me. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 20:29, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, and thanks for getting back to me on this. I can respect the fact that you declined the block, because maybe the individual has not performed enough activity to warrant such discipline. But as I said in the block request, all the editing this person has done is change the genre listings of band and album pages, with no discussion or effort to reach concensus at all. All edits from that IP have been article edits. I can respect that you would like to see if this person persists, and I saw the message you left on their user talk page.
By the way, since I had posted that block request, the IP has performed this edit on the All That Remains (band) page. The edit has since been reverted. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 05:00, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Question concerning comments on the ANI board.

I've just now brought this up in the discussion over genre-warring on the ANI board, but just in case you're no longer following the conversation I thought I'd mention it here: If I, or another editor were to remove the genre parameter from the affected pages in question like you have suggested, would you, or any editors you know support it? And would the ANI board be an appropriate place to gather consensus on the subject? Thank you. Friginator (talk) 01:34, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
