Air-Sea Warfare Development Unit RAF
[edit]Thanks for the new article - patrolling new articles, a nicely researched, well put together contribution is a surprisingly rare thing and it was a joy to find! Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 06:39, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Alexandermcnabb Thanks for the feedback, and for taking the time to do this note to me, its nice to see a positive comment, much appreciated. Kind regards, Mikeyp72 (talk) 08:04, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Lŷn peninsular RAF stations
[edit]You seem to be an authority on these. Is it possible that you have information about the Pwllheli Target, a large tripod structure in the sea between Pwllheli and Abersoch. It was huge, and no documentation exists that I have found so far. It was removed in the late 1960s and no obvious trace remains, certainly above the waves. It is said to have been a bombing target. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:17, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Timtrent: That's a new one one me, I haven't heard of the Pwllheli Target. I have been reading about the ranges and airfields situated on the Lŷn peninsular, particularly Hell's Mouth, Penrhos and Llandwrog and haven't come across that. When I read your note I immediately wondered if it was something relating to Penrhos, but can't find anything! Mikeyp72 (talk) 15:32, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- There are also large cement arrows, pointing "to it" flat on the ground in the coastline adjoining Pwllheli and/or Abersoch that have been reported to me. A friend found them using Google Earth
- The target was enormous. It was used as a racing mark by Pwllheli Sailing Club and South Carnarvon Yacht Club. I've sailed round it often. It was of substantial height made of large diameter steel tubes (at least .75m diameter). 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:44, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- It was at 52°50′46″N 4°25′45″W / 52.846024°N 4.429071°W or thereabouts. This is a guess from the late 1960s! An old Admiralty chart will show it, but I don't have any 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 16:03, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

No. 52 Naval TBR Wing
[edit]Excellent work, uploading all these Wing Leader details. However, there appears to be an error in your source material concerning No. 52 TBR Wing, as Lt Comm Fox served BEFORE Lt Comm Rance, who remained Wing Leader until it was disbanded. I believe the correct order should be: (1) Shrubsole (26 Nov 43); (2) Britton (5 Jan 44); (3) Fox (24 Jan 44); (4) Rance (15 Feb 44). My sources are below. I would be happy to upload these amendments, or you might prefer to do so yourself? Best, Mike. 1. Lt Comm Fox’s entry in the list of FAA Commanding Officers 1939-45 states “Wing Leader 52nd Wing briefly in spring 1944, prior to the attacks on the battleship Tirpitz”(see http://fleetairarmarchive.net/RollofHonour/COs/CommandingOfficers-f.htm ); 2. Fox left his former role as CO of 830 NAS for a Wing Leader role in the second half of January 44 ( see “Wings Over the Waves - Fleet Air Arm Strike Leader Against Tirpitz”, Graham Drucker’s biography of Lt Cdr Roy Baker-Falkner : page 290 (“15 January. I have just heard that Richard Kingdon is coming up here to take over command of one of the squadrons [830 NAS] in my wing”) and page 291 (“Saturday [29/1/44]. I told you that Fox has left us and got his own party [ie Wing] like me”. 3. Britton became Wing Leader of No. 2 and No. 12 TBR Wings on 24 Jan 44, so this would be the logical date for Fox to commence his brief command of No. 52 TBR Wing. (Clearly Britton’s tenure at No. 52 TBR Wing was even more temporary). 4. Rance’s previous role as CO of 831 NAS ended on 12 Feb 44 so the start date given by your source (15 Feb 44) looks right. There are multiple sources for Rance’s pivotal leadership of No. 52 TBR Wing from late February (when preparations for the attack on Tirpitz, Operation Tungsten, were under way, through April (Op. Tunsten, Op. Ridge Able) and into June 44 (Operation Lombard: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205155869). Turnbullmike (talk) 18:27, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Mike, thanks, yes enjoyed looking into the FAA Wings as didn't realise they had wings beforehand. Thanks for your detailed information. I have double checked my reference source to ensure I had copied correctly versus it. Happy for you to change based on your findings, and reading through I agree, it follows logically. Looking closer at my source, it had Fox down as commencing on 24.3.44, so it could easily be a typo and they could've meant 24.1.44. Kind regards, Mike. Mikeyp72 (talk) 19:03, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Change made. Turnbullmike (talk) 14:51, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
