[edit]If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. 331dot (talk) 16:59, 1 June 2018 (UTC)MikeyCommPhD (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
This is not a business entry - it the same as other published academic entries, such as https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wendy_Hui_Kyong_Chun - how is this a business?
Decline reason:
Procedural decline, only one request needed at a time. 331dot (talk) 18:06, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
Your username (I assume) means "University of East London Commmunications", which would be a department of the University. Your username must indicate you as an individual user; please read the username policy and reformat your existing unblock request to suggest a new username(per the instructions in the block notice). A name in the format of "YourName of UEL Communications" would be acceptable if you wish to indicate your affiliation with the University in your name. You don't have to use your real name, just something unique to you. Regarding your edits themselves, and given the fact that you seem to represent the University, you seem to be promoting your University's staff, which is not permitted. Please review the conflict of interest policy at WP:COI and the paid editing policy at WP:PAID and make the appropriate declarations. Complying with the paid editing policy is required by Wikipedia's Terms of Use if you are a paid editor(or editing as part of your job duties). 331dot (talk) 17:18, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

I am not saying the entry represents UEL, I am saying you represent UEL. If you do not, please clarify. Please don't remove comments until the discussion is over, at least. 331dot (talk) 18:06, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
neither the entry or I represent UEL in a business/promotional context. It was bad choice of user name - mispelt as well. I'm a PhD student with an interest in media theory, the work of this academic and the other mentioned
- Subsequent comments can simply be posted without the unblock request formatting; only unblock request is needed at a time. You state that you do not "represent UEL in a business/promotional context"; are you associated with UEL in any capacity other than being a student?(if you are even a UEL student) 331dot (talk) 19:11, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
OK, sorry for block formatting. I am a PhD student at UEL. I am paying money to them to study, so not with any vestsed interest in promoting the uni other than my own interest in the work of this academic. We just thought it was important that some of the staff here get more attention for their work. Many are losing their jobs due to cuts.
- Non-admin comment "...We just thought it was important..."
- Please clarify. "We"? That implies a shared account, which is also not permitted. Can you confirm that you are the sole owner of this account, and that nobody else, including university administrators, has access to it? Also, please remember to sign your posts with 4 tildes (~). - Why do you want "UELCommunications" in your username if you do not represent UEL? 331dot (talk) 08:48, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Two answers here then... First, "We" is a reference to me and a conversation I had with other PhD students in a pub - nobody else has access to this page. I can see why you're testing me on this, but it's getting a little black mirror. Second, I used the name UELCommuncations (sic) because I am a PhD student doing communications... Again, I can see why there's a problem here, but it was simply a choice I made without foresight of the problems it would cause.UELcommuncations (talk) 08:55, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- Leaving the username issue aside(someone with the power to change usernames should be along at some point), you seem to indicate that you are here for promotional purposes. ("I am drawing attention to published work of an academic who works there", "thought it was important that some of the staff here get more attention for their work. Many are losing their jobs due to cuts.") I have nothing but sympathy for what you are trying to do, but edits here must be made with the goal of improving this encyclopedia. The draft you were working on read more like a social media profile or entry in a university guide than an encyclopedia article. You had at least one link to a place to purchase this academic's work, and from what I saw few if any independent reliable sources with in depth coverage that indicate how this man meets the notability guidelines for academics at WP:NACADEMIC. You may find reading Your First Article helpful. 331dot (talk) 09:21, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for this. What are you proposing? I can work on a new draft - just to note that I did refer to a number of external sources though - journals, press, and reviews of the academics work - So I don't entirely agree, although, yes, I didn't mean to link to any sales opportunities. I can find more credible sources, but are you saying that links to university press pages are a no no? Yes you can buy books there, but they are also info sources for reviews etc. Also, when you say "someone with the power to change usernames should be along at some point" you mean that an admin person will change my use name for me? So I can start again? UELcommuncations (talk) 10:03, 2 June 2018 (UTC) Just to add, I'll be offline now for the remainder of the weekend. It's warm and sunny outside. Have a good weekend UELcommuncations (talk) 10:03, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- Not all administrators(such as me) have the ability to change usernames, that is a separate power. I probably would start a fresh draft, only writing based on the content of independent reliable sources. Primary sources are only acceptable for indisputable factual information(like birthdates) and do not establish notability. I suspect that the press of UEL would not qualify as an independent source(if they publish the works of their staff). The sources will have to demonstrate that the academics meet at least one of the criteria written at WP:NACADEMIC. 331dot (talk) 20:58, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
OK thanks. Should I just continue with this username for now, or set a new one? I'll start another draft and make sure I follow these guidelines. Thanks again for help with this UELcommuncations (talk) 08:35, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- I am unblocking you to allow you to change your username yourself. Please visit WP:CHU and use one of the two methods there to request a new name(one method requires giving an email address, the other does not). I would suggest not editing anything else until your name is changed(merely to avoid confusion). 331dot (talk) 08:42, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks 331dot I've managed to change my username and draft a version that I think follows the guidelines. OK? MikeyCommPhD (talk) 13:13, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
