Block

FYI, I went ahead and restored the bot's block because I felt that was where consensus was, and with the multiple threads it made sense to do it now rather than have it keep editing against community consensus. I think this falls under an appropriate restoration of administrative actions under WP:WHEEL since it'd been discussed in multiple places and this appeared to be rough consensus in favour of the block. I also have a thread at Wikipedia:Bots/Noticeboard#Status_of_bot in case I'm off my rocker and reading this wrong. I hope you have an excellent holiday weekend.     • Move wb_terms data in cloud replicas to wb_terms_no_longer_updated (phab:T248592)
    • Rebuild wb_items_per_site, after incident where wb_items_per_site was dropped (phab:T249596)
    • Purge / Reject client pages that were cached in parser cache during the incident (phab:T249595)
    • More work on Automated finding references
    • More work on federated properties: create and save a statement with federated properties

Base citation template for WD stuff?

I have been completing data for citations for works at enWS with {{cite TIWW}} where I have the data in WD as I do the transclusions. Do we have a base WD-focused template so I can just move to complete laziness, so if I construct the cite templates properly and then just enter these templates without parameters? ultimate infobox-style for citations! [Noting that things like {{cite Australasia}} and {{cite IrishBio}} would also migrate, though would need data audited prior.]

I have come to the conclusion, that I just totally suck with anything about calling WD data. There is some inner thinking that I just don't get. I will just do it the long way, my skills, that they are, lie in other areas. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:58, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Yep, I have bothered them at enWS, and not wanting to overdo my welcome, would prefer the help at enWS. I thought that there may just have been something already. I know I suitably uglified {{wikisource author}} myself, but the threading the needle of references <bleh!>. It isn't that important, the additional data fields aren't burdensome, I was just futureproofing, and maybe concepting. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:32, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Tool of the week
    • Ordia generates statistics from Wikidata lexeme information, and through the "Text to Lexemes" feature allows linking a document to the associated lexemes, and highlighting missing lexemes that can be added.
  • Development
    • Prototyping week: the Wikidata team at Wikimedia Germany spent one week working on some quick experiements. The projects developed during this week are not necessarily going to be added to the maintained codebase. Among those projects:
      • try to use GraphQL for the API providing access to Wikibase/Wikidata data
      • allow to programmatically access different configuration variables of a Wikibase instance to make it easier for tools to built on top of it
      • investigate ranking for Items to order them by their relevance in a query result
      • com up with a workflows for editing statements linking to other Items in the Wikidata Bridge
      • identify how to improve Wikidata's accessibility
      • create design system components to continue improving consistency

    • zotkat's exporter for Zotero (a software to manage bibliographic data) allows you to export bibliographies to the QuickStatements format. It is helpful to easily create bibliographical entries, especially as Zotero can read metadata about works from dozens of other websites, and can thus be used as intermediary.
  • Development
    • More work on error screens for the Bridge
    • Use updated data for the Bridge (phab:T240223)
    • Display statements made with federated properties on item pages (phab:T246606)
    • Automated references: normalizing data that the extractor gets out of HTML pages (phab:T249004)
    • Create a distributed game so people can vet references easily (phab:T248997)

50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week

Please, the description!

Hi Mike! Great pictures from the Natural History Museum in Stockholm here! But you forgot the most important thing: To describe WHAT it shows! Just a lot of stones without explanation doesn't say much. This is a mistake many people make when uploading pictures. Especially important when it comes to images that do not "speak for themselves" such as stones and minerals. Something you surely understand as an expert. @LaFotisto: Sorry, I try to add context when I upload photos, but I don't always have the details (beyond 'this museum'), or the time (although I try to go back to older photos to add more info when I can, but other editors are often more knowledgeable than I am!). I've added a few more cateogries for context; for the stones I also uploaded wider angle photos including the display panels, I hope that helps. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:53, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: I understand. And thanks - the display panels helps a lot! The reason from the beginning was that I became interested in minerals and rocks and was looking for pictures in Commons. When I saw your pictures I was delighted because it was exactly the kind of clear differences in the different rocks I was looking for. But quickly I was disappointed because there was no information on each individual stone. But I can do enough now with the display panels. ASTER

Hi Mike, Seeing you in the WMUK chat reminded me that I wanted to ask for your help about ASTER as a way of measurng height of mountains etc - I am trying to disambiguate Aster & on the list is ASTER (spacecraft) but I'm not sure this is the right link to put in - an example is on Reclus (Andes Mountains). There is nothing ironic: you have lied and not taken down the post when this was pointed out to you. I don’t care what you were deleting in the first place, or why, but the act of deleting it is plain wrong.
