Stats and DBpedia
[edit]Hello, are there any updated aggregate of the data available here http://dammit.lt/wikistats/? I mean for example one file per day or (better) one file per month instead of one file per hour. We are trying to use those data for the a new feature of the DBpedia project (http://dbpedia.org)
Thanks!
Eugenio2 (talk) 11:28, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
- @Eugenio2: See http://wikistics.falsikon.de/dumps.htm for that ;-) Monthly data for December will be added the next days there. --- Best regards, Melancholie (talk) 04:46, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

PostgreSQL
[edit]I'm interested in helping to get PostgreSQL support added. I started working on the installer and several of my other patches are already in CVS. What are you working on, and what is left to be done? I'd rather not duplicate effort. -- ChadMiller 21:49, 2005 Jan 19 (UTC)
- Right now I was working on non-PG stuff, and all my PG work is already in database. I hope I'll be able to merge everything in. There's still some schema and other patches floating around, I've got to catch them all up. Domas Mituzas 10:38, 2005 Jan 29 (UTC)
lietuviska wikipedia
Domas Mituzas 15:31, 2005 Jan 30 (UTC)

Vilnius, Vilno and whatnot
[edit]Hi there! I'm not as pro-Polish as it might seem. I simply don't like anachronisms and calling the Byzantine capital "Istanbul" is a mistake for me. Similarily, I have nothing against calling the modern city of Vilnius with its contemporary name in historical articles. Check User_talk:Meier for more details.
And I must say that I didn't get your "you should treat anon users as humans as well" remark. Could you explain it? --Halibutt 23:04, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, the revert reason was 'rv anon'. As if it was the main reason ;-) Domas Mituzas 06:31, 2005 Mar 29 (UTC)
—Preceding unsigned comment added by Vaisvila (talk • contribs) 09:13, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
MogileFS in PHP & Wikipedia
[edit]Midom, I was checking out your cvs source for MogileFS (I assume you're source ;-): [3].
How far along with porting the client to PHP are you? The sections labeled "TODO" are they really to-do? Or are they all done? They look pretty good.
Is MogileFS on the list of stuff to eventually integrate into Wikipedia?
It looks pretty cool, I was thinking about using it in some of my code. Thanks!
- Ianneub 00:14, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)
- The MogileFS effort was directed to availability of any generic storage facility. The MogileFS extension itself has been done by JeLuF, though, I later tried to use it for MediaWiki. Anyway, there's another development effort in our camp, a distributed object system, a bit similiar to MogileFS, though, eliminates needs of SPOF (MySQL database for trackers). The ETA for it might be several months. The we sure will have generic storage implemented everywhere. And by the way, 1.5 MediaWiki (currently in alpha), already has ability to define external storage classes for Articles. Therefore you can have your wiki store archives or current articles on FTP/HTTP/MogileFS/distributed MySQL/BitTorrent ;-) Domas Mituzas 08:43, 2005 Apr 23 (UTC)
- Holy cow, a bittorrent storage engine for articles? That's awesome. I wonder how well it will work in practice (too much latency?) Do you have any URLs describing the new distributed object system or annon cvs access? I'd love to poke around and see what it looks like. - Ianneub 20:07, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)
- BitTorrent was a joke. I just wanted to show flexibility of method behind. BitTorrent has very slow response time, so there has to be kind of different algorithms for that. But nobody told us it can't be distributed. And so far we're not considering involving software running on peers, just distributed on our servers. Domas Mituzas 05:18, 2005 Apr 26 (UTC)

Date/time format localization
[edit]It is irritating to see date parts ordered according to english rules in lithuanian wiki (not sure about other languages). Can we have this fixed? Or, at the very least, can we move to ISO Date/Time?

[edit]I run a genealogy wiki for my family, using the Mediawiki software. It is password protected, and I would love to be able to track user login statistics, such as who logs in and when. Another translation is of Template to Predloga. Regards, --Klemen Kocjancic 10:51, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
--AndriuZ 13:04, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I am the User:Bababoum and have been unable to login since logging out sometime on Saturday. Even though I'm sure I have tried to log in with the correct password (my username), I requested to be e-mailed with a new password, but it said "There is no e-mail address recorded for user "Bababoum". I took this to the admins where it was discussed here, WP:AN#Login unsuccessful, and I was told that you would possibly be able to retrieve my account. They also said that my account may have been disabled due to having the same username/password, although I wasn't aware that this happened. Hello Domas - Wikinews
[edit]User:Henrik said you were the person to speak to about data for compiling page stats for the English Wikinews. As you may know, we are a smaller project trying to grow a bit, but we have some trouble in figuring out what directions we should take. One tool that would help us immensely is if we could figure out what people are reading (and are not) on our site. Henrik said you were the Go-To-Guy about data. Is there a possibility we could get data compiled for the English Wikinews so that we could start looking at the readership stats? Any help would make you a hero on the Wikinews. PERF
[edit]Hi! Let me quote few things from PERF: In the overwhelming majority of cases means that there's slight minority of cases that has different issues. On the rare occasion they occur, follow instructions from the system administrators who come in to pick up the pieces, and everything will be fine. - well, you just reverted one. Obviously you shouldn't do exactly the same thing again - but you did. listen to the system administrators if they tell you not to do something - it is even in bold. oh well. but the safeguards we have in place are not perfect. - indeed they are not, and thats why we have to do performance engineering. Domas Mituzas (talk) 08:22, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- Apologies, I did not realize that you were a developer. The only reason I put that code there was so that we wouldn't have to use an even more ugly and inefficient JavaScript hack to change the text on the main page's tab. I'm fine with you removing the code from MediaWiki:Nstab-main, but I am not going to let the JavaScript hack we used before back in. If there is demand for this feature then you developers will have to come up with some other way to implement it.
- Anyway, happy editing, and I'll be more careful about reverting your edits in the future. —Remember the dot (talk) 01:00, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Stats generation
[edit]I believe you had been doing a data dump that User:Henrik was using to generate http://stats.grok.se/ However, the stats seem to have stopped being generated on 12 July 2008.[4] Is that because you stopped generating them? 199.125.109.40 (talk) 13:42, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Domas, it seems that the http://dammit.lt/wikistats/scripts/builddaily script stopped working (daily and .stage were last written on June 20th). User:Henrik states on his user page that he is on vacation, may I therefore ask you to check into this issue? Kind regards, --Drahkrub (talk) 09:32, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- The reason seems to be that stats.grok.se harddisk is full. The raw data is still available. The builddaily script doesn't have to do with Henrik's analyses, by the way. They are based on the hourly logs, that actually fit needs best. (Side note: the surplus builddaily script seems to be too server intense; I already offered midom my resulting daily logs, as there would be even more things to log with his server, image usage etc.) --- Best regards, Melancholie (talk) 21:33, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

First of all, I apologize if you're the wrong person to ask this.
I recently had my user name changed from User:SWik78 to User:Big Bird. The rename was performed on January 18 but my edits still have not been re-assigned. Wikistats
[edit]Hi, I am de:User:Ben-Oni from the German Wikipedia. I am part of a group of users, who used the data you supply on http://dammit.lt/wikistats/ to create montly viewing statistics for the articles in a particular category (using a perl script) and we came to the conclusion, that the download times are the bottleneck, enforcing quite a long runtime. Would it be possible for you to supply a list of compiled data (just adding up all the views in the month for each article) at the end of each month? For us this would amount to a reduction of downloaded data from ~35GB to ~50MB which would be quite a relief. If there is already a source for such "compiled data" I would be grateful, if you could point me the direction. Cheers -- 77.137.25.155 (talk) 09:18, 2 October 2009 (UTC)
Hello, Midom! I have been thinking of writing a tool that makes use of the wikistats you accumulate and host. However, just as the user above, I would like to use the article view counts per month. I could of course download the roughly 36 GB dataset and process it by myself too, if necessary, but that seems like a hugely unnecessary waste of time and resources. So, perhaps you are willing to aggregate the hourly statistics once per month into a monthly article viewcounts? I have no doubt that I would not be the only one interested in that feature. Wikiproject medicine
[edit]We are currently working on a paper for publication. We are wondering if it is possible to figure out the sum of the pages views for all article pages that are part of Wikiproject medicine for a given month? One static number for a given month would be good. If we could look back in time and get a graph of the changing influence of WPMED on health care that would be incredible. Wikistats
[edit]Hi Domas, I see you get a number of questions about your WikiStats dump here. I've read through them all and haven't seen this simple query answered: How is one to interpret the filenames? For example "pagecounts-20100609-000000.gz", I assume, would be all hits that occured between 00:00:00 and 00:59:59 on 6/9/2010, and the locale would be UTC. One problem; this file is currently available (at a seemingly full 55MB), and it is only 00:46:00 UTC. So is it actually all edits that occured BEFORE the filename, but AFTER the previous filename? (or something along the lines, (i.e., "the hour that ended at..."). Thanks, 00:50, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
- The hour that ended at, yes. Domas Mituzas (talk) 11:22, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Wikistats currently defective?
[edit]Hi, there seems to be a problem with the most recent wikistats, with secondary tools like stats.grok.se exhibiting sharp drops in access numbers pretty much across the board. Example: enWP main page: June 10th: 4.5M hits, 11th: 2.8M, 12th: 905k. Similiar for deWP.
At the same time, the size of the generated pagecount files dropped below their usual 50+ MB, starting with pagecounts-20100610-190000.gz (42.1M), slowly dwindling away to currently 15–20 MB. Could you please take a look at this? Regards, —mnh·∇· 05:49, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

new page patrol
[edit]Hi Midom, there's a discussion at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Increase_Special_New_Pages_from_30_days_to_60_days where we would value your input. Basically we would like either to extend the newpage patrol process to longer than 30 days or when the unpatrolled articles default to patrolled add a hidden category to them. ϢereSpielChequers 21:11, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
I saw this, and thought you should look at this:
There's a lot on that page, both above and below, but the gist of it was to move the elements of references from template args to reg-tag args and avoid most of the hit for parsing the templates. The external demo is down, but is was sweet. It still allowed the pumping of the reference through whatever template at the end of things, but without most of the server load. I think something along these lines is the future. A lot of people seem to have missed that this extension would allow whatever ref style to by applied to whole pages and could be driven by a user pref. Cheers, Jack Merridew 23:24, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
How to?
[edit]These, your words of wisdom I have installed on my User page for the edification of all for over a year now, but I am curious as to how matters have progressed since then. I won't miss an opportunity to edify more people, when there is the excuse that I have to fill you in on what I am talking about, so:
- "A simple null edit takes ~500 bytes in revision table, ~500 bytes in cu_changes, 250 bytes in page, 700 bytes in recentchanges, 100 bytes in 'text', may grow external storage blob by few bytes or do a compressed text copy (depends). Multiply that by amount of replicas (nearly 10 for enwiki), and you get 20k per edit. A bot which does 5000 edits per day consumes at least 10MB of diskspace a day. Of course, thats just null edits - anything involving changes in links tables or bigger text differences do cost more. If anyone wants to see our core database dataset distribution, a somewhat old snapshot is at http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pfjIQrTbpVkaIStok1hWAdg&hl=en - it doesn't show external-store use though. Cheers!" Domas Mituzas

Identifying the source of spikes
[edit]I was wondering if there is any sort of log information that would identify where spikes come from. Some are obvious, such as when an article appears on the main page or becomes the subject of a Google Doodle, but other times, an article will suddenly spike to 10x or 20x its normal traffic. Is it possible to show where the traffic is coming from, perhaps the top 1 - 5 originating sites? Thank you. Marrante (talk) 06:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Cuisinart statistics seem wrong
[edit]Cuisinart was only edited four times last year, it has seven sentences, 1.7 KB, 2 refs, 2 ELs, a photo, and a navbox. How can it possibly get a million hits per month? It's not consistent with the 5 AFT reviews the article has received.
I found this in the raw hourly squid log data, so I thought it would be best to ask you even though someone else asked at User talk:Henrik#Cuisinart counts seem wrong. Npmay (talk) 20:45, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- It is not "wrong" - someone is actively refreshing that page all the time. All requests are coming from single IP, and have referer header pointing to the product website. I guess they're inflating their stats that way :-) Domas Mituzas (talk) 08:47, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

That many excess page views has to be costing at least a few extra dollars. Also asking at WP:VPT#Page view anomaly in case you don't watch here. —Cupco 02:46, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like that is coming from blog spam (and very few IPs) - requests are coming from Wordpress, probably trying to validate links or something like that. Domas Mituzas (talk) 10:31, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
It's not going away. It's getting worse. Also, http://stats.grok.se/en/latest90/Discount
Is there someone at the Foundation who can reach out to Wordpress and ask them to try to track this down? Since it's likely spam related, I doubt they'd mind, and it's costing them the same bandwidth. —Cupco 17:41, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Page View question - Redirects
[edit]Quick question about the pageview data. I am a PhD student at the University of Michigan, hoping to use this data for a couple different research projects. I just want to make sure I know how redirects are handled in the pageview data. For example (and there are many examples), if you type in http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Individual_Retirement_Account, the page you land on tells you "(Redirected from Individual Retirement Account)". If you type in http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Individual_retirement_account, it does not say anything about being redirected. In the pagecount data, there is an entry for Individual_Retirement_Account as well as Individual_retirement_account. When I see that Individual_Retirement_Account has 17 views, and Individual_retirement_account has 10, were there really 17 people (I understand they are not unique, and someone could just be refreshing the page) that looked at those two sites, or are some of those page-views the result of the redirect? The same goes for page titles with differences other than just capitalization (for example, http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Income_trusts and http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Income_trust). Thanks! WP:5000 has it as the 15th most popular article, but it didn't even make the top 1000 at http://stats.grok.se/en/top in 2010. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
[edit]Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Extended confirmed protection
[edit]Hello, Midom. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
[edit]Hello,
Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers
[edit]Hi Midom.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
[edit]Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. — xaosflux Talk 14:26, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
