New Barnstar

[edit]

You are the first recipient of the Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar. Enjoy! Mike H 00:38, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I've asked you this before, but do you do IRC? I'm being ignored in the chat right now, and I'd like to talk. Mike H 15:59, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)
If no download is the problem, I use Java so I've never downloaded it either. Here. [1]. Mike H 16:10, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)
The link should ask you to accept the company's permissions. Maybe your computer isn't allowing the screen to pop open. Try lowering safety settings, or allowing pop-ups. Then you should be able to get there. Type in your handle, #wikipedia, irc.freenode.net, and server number 7000. Mike H 16:24, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)
At the risk of sounding too "are we there yet?" like a kid in a car...are you home yet? Mike H 23:23, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)
    • Aug 12, 2004. User: Ghitis. About Brownian Effect.

That was fast! I understand, and I'm sorry. Just: I published that article, still inchoate, and several others, in J.Theoretics. I'm a friend of the editor, and we published together an editorial. The Journal is closing down, and there should be no reason for claiming infringement. The article posits well-based additions to the subject, which can be tested experimentally. My intention is educational, and even though you are right, the rejection could be reconsidered. Wikipedia is one of the outstanding projects of the Century.

I got the image Image:UraniumUSGOV.jpg from [2], which just said Uranium. I uploaded most images in the list. Tomorrow I will go through the list and check for some images missing an article. I'll check out the Uranium, too. My guess is that it is a type of ore, since pure Uranium is supposed to be a silvery-white metal, not a yellow rock. Thanks for the comment. -- Chris 73 | Talk 15:54, 3 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Update: I did a bit of snooping around on the web, and the image looks very similiar to uranium ore, but not quite like pitchblende. So i labeled it as uranium ore. -- Chris 73 | Talk 14:23, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Belated as it may be, no matter! It is nice to be welcomed. Thanks for the welcome message you posted for me, too! --Bassaf 20:10, Aug 4, 2004 (UTC)

Meelar, you left a note on this article's talk page in June saying it was not NPOV but you weren't knowledgable to fix it. I hadn't noticed it until now. As someone who was homeschooled from cradle to college, and as a former volunteer and employee of a statewide homeschool support group (my mother is the former chair of that statewide group, and one of her best friends spearheaded the fight to legalize homeschooling in our state 20 years ago), I'll volunteer as someone who may be knowledgable to fix it, though obviously I arrive at the table with some biases I'll have to work very hard to limit. Can you help me understand what violations you see? I see a general slant in favor of the practice, largely in tone. Are there specific sections you can point out? I'd be happy to toss around some paragraphs with you to collaborate our way to something nice and NPOV. Let me know what you think. If you think I'm likely to be too biased to edit profitably, please let me know -- I promise not to be offended. If it helps, I and my family come from a background that doesn't advocate any of the "methods" of homeschooling, but rather simply supports it as a legal educational option that can be beneficial for many families (and was for mine), but which is not inherently superior to others. Perhaps that will allay a few fears, at least. :-) Jwrosenzweig 21:30, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply! I think getting an outline from you at the talk page would be excellent, and would help me very much. I don't mind taking on a large amount -- after reading your note, I looked the article over again (a little more carefully) and noticed the issues you point out. It may take a little time, but I think it's very worthwhile. :-) Thanks for being willing to do work on a project that isn't in your usual interest area. Jwrosenzweig 22:02, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks much Meelar, looks like the edit button represents a broader concept/tool than simply editing. I was abit nervous about using it too freely. I'll get the hang. I supose it's often good to sign posts too. Wblakesx

Thanks for the welcome and the hints (re: signing off messages), I hope I'll learn more about the editing process as I go a long. Mumble 14:11, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC) (And I should probably edit my user page, too...)

Re: Barack Obama marriage date

[edit]

Well, you could probably mention that they married in 1992 somewhere in the relevant paragraph, i.e. "Obama met his future wife Michelle Robinson whom he married in 1992 (they have two daughters, Malia Ann and Natasha, ages 5 and 3 respectively)". I don't know if you should cite the source, but it seems reliable enough to me, and if it's wrong somebody's bound to correct it, so we probably shouldn't need to mention it. Washington, DC

[edit]

Your statement that all Federal agencies are HQ'ed in DC, except CDC and CIA, is inaccurate and an oversimplification. For one thing, CDC is not an independent agency, but part of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, which is HQ'ed in DC. Many other agencies that really are independent, like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, are HQ'ed outside of DC (NRC for example is HQ'ed in Rockville, MD). It is more accurate to say that most federal agencies have their headquarters in DC, without enumerating the ones that don't.

I also thought to reorganize the section on the statehood movement a little.

I was born and raised in DC, so I feel qualified to throw in a thing or two about the place on free Wikipedia. No disrespect to your own efforts.

Bullets or no bullets?

[edit]

Thank you for the greeting me to Wikipedia. This place is a very nice community.

I am trying to edit an entry which I feel is outdated and could include more information, but I have a question.

I am listing the 38 staff members of the company the entry is for. Bullets take up quite a bit of space, but should I use them? A regular list seperated by commas would be smaller but harder to read.

Thanks for any help. I realize this could be a matter of opinion, but your opinion on a topic like this would probably be better than mine, due to experience.

[edit]

It's probably a good idea not to post messages to anyone's page about copyright until they have completed their work which at times for us (Jill or dumb Jack) can be a few minutes or a few days. If you have grave fears, (and I mean John Bunny died in 1915 so unless they dug him up 9 years later , did a makeup job on his corpse, and took the picture), then you, us, and everyone at Wikipedia who has been here for more than an hour, knows old dead John's photo is not subject to copyright in the United States of America. Of course if the very future of Wikipedia is under threat, please immediately list the offending photo on "Votes for deletion." Thank you. JillandJack 16:50, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Peer review on Iraq casualties

[edit]

A few issues: 1. The "who is to blame" section doesn't seem to add anything to the article, and is full of weasel words and/or POV. I'd remove it. 2. No definition is given for "civilian"--is there a distinction between a Sadr militiaman and a collateral damage victim? How is that distinction made? Other than that, not bad. Meelar 19:43, 2004 Aug 18 (UTC)

Thanks for the ideas...
1. While I don't think it would be right to remove the "blame" section altogether, since it is an obvious issue that needs to be addressed to clarify that the article itself isn't taking a POV, I could see trying to shorten it some, and any "weasel words/POV" should certainly be fixed. Could you give any more detail on what you saw as weasley/POV, or maybe ideas on how you'd want it changed?
2. Good questions. Generally a civilian is someone unarmed as opposed to members of an army/police (I certainly wouldn't call any militiaman a "civilian"), but this may be another case where different sources may use different definitions, and it would be good to note that in the article. Neow 00:31, Aug 20, 2004 (UTC)
[edit]

Thanks for your admission of fallibility on Talk:Barack Obama. Indeed, we must all live and learn. As for practical consequences: The article on Obama's opponent, Alan Keyes, is in fairly decent shape, and is in Peer Review with the express goal of improving it so it can be featured. Do you have a problem with that plan? Frankly, my feeling is that we should bend over backward, and feature it even if it were to fall a wee bit short of the usual standard. JamesMLane 04:52, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a discussion forum

[edit]

Hi there,

I do not consider that attempting to work out a contentious issue on the article's talk page is in violation of this guideline. Neither do I consider that the fact that an individual is regarded in many countries as a threat to world peace, does not require at least a sentence or two on their article page. Now as to what is put there, how it is worded, what it is alongside, and what references are given, do indeed need worked out.

Thanks. While I was really tempted to just block him outright based on your previous warning, I figured a 24-hour block was all I could legitimately defend based on a strict reading of our policies, and I felt that would be inadequate for the seriousness of the situation. Instead, I'm hoping my improvised proposal can establish some kind of basis for community-approved measures in advance of Arbitration Committee action. --Michael Snow 05:34, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Snake category

[edit]

Hi Meelar. Thanks so much for helping with category snakes.

The reason is that we are trying to the tree of life categories in a systematic way - if we put all snake species in a single category covering an entire suborder we end up with a category numbering in the hundreds. We think this is too big. It is better to have sub-categories such as boas and vipers etc etc, to allow a neat hieracrhy that meshes nicely with the tree. I have implemented this for the mammals and all the reptiles except the snakes, which I intend to do this morning. Sorry to be such a PITA, Pcb21| Pete 08:04, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC).

Thanks for understanding and putting up us funny systematists! Actually if you are looking for a new wikipedia todo anytime soon, the snakes are a good one if you are interested in them. The pages are a bit messy and could do with uniformizing (taxoboxes etc) ... navigation is fairly tricky right now. Not everyone's cup of tea I know, but if you fancy a break from actually creating content! Pcb21| Pete 08:26, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Just an fyi, I've now done the first pass of the snakes. See Category:Snakes for the subcategories. Some have turned out to be fairly small (one has six articles only) but they are all very ripe for expansion - there are plenty of species to be written still in each subcategory and snakes are a well-studied field and so there is lots of info about. Sheesh! You must be a Republican. The edit has been reverted. No harm done. Nelson Ricardo 00:57, Sep 1, 2004 (UTC)

33451/Mr. Grinch

[edit]

I just wanted to update everyone who endorsed the complaint at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/33451. After some dialogue, Mr. Grinch has acknowledged his vandalism and committed to make only good-faith edits in the future. I'm not seeking any further action, and I think we can consider the problem resolved. Thank you for your support in dealing with this matter. --Michael Snow 20:44, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Although I think i've been around for a few months. But thanks for the welcome anyways.

And looking at some of the stuff you corrected, I don't know how I didn't notice some of that stuff. Thanks.

Southern Poverty Law Center

[edit]

Thank you for your feedback on the page above referenced. I want to know how this page can be removed from Wikipedia. The hornets are swarming around it and there is nothing about it that could be termed neutral. It is useless to try and revise it. The SPLC people don't bother because there are so many web sites devoted to destroying their reputation. I like the Wikipedia concept and don't want to see it bent to the needs and purposes of extremists. Wikipedia would be better off without an article on SPLC.

I've signed up.

Yet another thank you

Wow, I haven't even been registered an hour yet when you left that welcome message, thank you. I guess you are the "fastest welcome wagon in the west."

Nite Mirror

Book and article citations, oh my!

[edit]

Ever had occasion to do these? Does Wikipedia have a style for them? (Tried editing an article on architecture. Failed miserably.)

Ah-ha! Thanks for the info on citations.

Contents java tables

[edit]

How can I make the Contents java tables appear at the top of an article, after the introduction and before all the others sub-headings? Alberto Orlandini 19:39, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thankyou

[edit]

Just saw the note you left on my user page. Great stuff. Really enjoying being around here, and your note has topped things off nicely. Thankyou for making me feel welcome.
