Trent

Hi Matty, just wanted to ask since you added the hidden note re: the Carabao Cup: I've been undoing those additions but LFC's current player profile for Trent does include the 2024 cup on the sidebar. Is the rule of thumb here still to stick with matchday squad? I don't see any guidelines on that at WP:FOOTY. Thanks! Alyo (chat·edits) 15:51, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

@Alyo: Hi, I would stick with the matchday squad, unless an independent reliable source can be provided which states that the player received a medal. For me, the Liverpool FC website (or any other club, for that matter, in a comparable scenario) isn't an adequately independent source. I mean, they're bound to list their players with as many honours as they can. For example, they list Harvey Elliott as a 2019/20 Premier League winner, despite him not qualifying for a medal, as per his Premier League profile (which they would include if he had received a medal). Mattythewhite (talk) 14:19, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
No worries, that was my first instinct as well and it makes sense to me. Just wanted a second opinion since that change is started to verge on edit warring if I continue to make it. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:23, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

Virgil Van Dijk captaincy

In Van Dijk's page you said that captaincy is not needed in the front page of a wikipedia page, however unlike American sports, being a team captain is a large honor, and the common practice is to include it in the beginning of pages. Messi, Son, Ronaldo all have it. Is it ok that I added it back? Char3290 (talk) 00:07, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

After having a look in this case, I do think his captaincy should be in the lead as many other players also do. I look forward to hearing Mattythewhite's thoughts.--WikiBits17 (talk) 13:32, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

@Char3290:, @WikiBits17: MOS:LEADCLUTTER encourages us to "not overload the first sentence by describing everything notable about the subject; instead, spread the relevant information out over the entire lead". I feel that the opening sentence of the lead should concentrate on establishing how the subject is notable, which in Van Dijk's case is through him being a professional footballer. Details regarding captaincy can then be discussed further in the lead. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:04, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Lewis Dunk Removal of Content

How is Dunk playing in his 400th league appearance for a club not notable? How many players play that many league games for their career, let alone at one club? Kalkvia (talk) 17:32, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

@Kalkvia: Perhaps, but it would need a source. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:56, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
I had a source and then you removed the entire thing. I used the Premier League, which highlighted both his goal and during the broadcast, his 400th League game achievement. Kalkvia (talk) 18:08, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
That is what @Mattythewhite does, the most appalling and ridiculous source policeman you will ever see. He's even removed honours from players before when there are pictures of them available in the public domain WEARING the things, because there isn't a website that lists them as winning it up to his standards (which are of course more important than a person's own eyes). Don't take it personally, he's a stain on this website and when he's, shall we say, no longer able to lord over everyone and everything, it'll all be undone. 2A02:C7C:F217:CD00:F85D:D153:6F58:4651 (talk) 18:26, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Carles Puyol

Hi, may I ask you why did you reverse my change on Carles Puyol? The name is indeed in Catalan (the Spanish form would be "Carlos"). The template does nor refer to the nationality of the person (which is indeed Spanish), but rather to the language in which the name is reported. --LametinoWiki (talk) 17:06, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

@LametinoWiki: Hi, I changed it as the subject's full name in the article is not written in the Catalan form (i.e. the surnames not being joined by i). Mattythewhite (talk) 14:04, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Naming of Darwin Nunez's child in article

His child's name is mentioned in multiple reputable outlets. His child has been photographed on his Instagram with his name on his shirt. Multiple articles for footballers mention the names of their children. I'm frankly astonished that you are trying to claim this shouldn't be the case. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScouseSocialist (talkcontribs) 01:39, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

@ScouseSocialist: I made the change in line with WP:BLPNAME, namely the footnote stating that "This is generally interpreted by the community to include the removal of names of non-notable minors from articles about their notable family members" which follows the sentence starting "The names of any immediate, former, or significant family members..." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mattythewhite (talkcontribs) 22:03, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

Kobbie Mainoo

Hi, you asked why "fotmob" is better source than premier league website. It's quite simple, they have updated information. Kobbie Mainoo is 184/5 cm. Google Amrabat Kobbie Mainoo and see them standing next to each other, Mainoo is taller than 183 cm Amrabat. Look up him standing next to Maguire, he's literally only cm few smaller than him. You can compare him to other footballers on pictures. Premier League simply doesn't have updated info, which is normal. He's 18 years old, he's growing just like every other teenager in the world. As of now, fotmob info is accurate and he's around 184-185 cm. I doubt premier league info would be updated for the next couple of years, they honestly don't care Jweiss10 (talk) 14:56, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

Most websites have him as 183-186. Here's sofascore as well. https://www.sofascore.com/player/kobbie-mainoo/1142175

I will be changing him to 185 because in my opinion it's accurate. These sources are good. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jweiss10 (talkcontribs) 14:58, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

@Jweiss10: But where are FotMob getting their data from? Are they guessing his height based on comparisons with other players? Also, I would note that Sofascore give his height as 1.75 cm. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:03, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I just saw that. That's weird. Literally 5 minutes ago they had him as 183, I even have a screenshot. But okay, anyway, I'll email premier league asking them to change it to his accurate height then. And then change it here. Which probably is waste of time because it will be accurate only for a few months, today he's 185 but by the end of the year he will probably be 187 or 188. Jweiss10 (talk) 15:11, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

Ethics Workshop Participation Request

Hi! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. Mohamed Salah

Hello Just want a 2nd opinion on something if possible. I added some games with ref on him today and you made adjustment all fine but with a 2nd look maybe my ref is incorrect. In the 2009/10 season in the league if you look here at my ref https://www.playmakerstats.com/match/2010-05-03-el-mansurah-el-mokawloon/910950 VS previous ref here https://www.worldfootball.net/report/premiership-2009-2010-el-mansurah-al-mokawloon/ and this https://www.playmakerstats.com/match/2010-05-13-el-mokawloon-enppi/910960 VS https://www.worldfootball.net/report/premiership-2009-2010-al-mokawloon-enppi/ you see that worldfootball has a diff. Salah (Ramadan Salah) playing compared to playmakerstats who has Mohamed Salah playing. Worldfootball seems to have the whole squads and subs comp. to playmakerstats who only has Mo Salah and nobody else so should we maybe delete the added games and use the previous one or keep it as it is? Bakermannn (talk) 17:57, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

@Bakermannn: I'd probably leave it as it is. According to the article (although no source is provided) and this (albeit not an ideal source), he made his debt on 3 May 2010, which matches playermakerstats.com's data, while worldfootball.com list his only appearance of the 2009/10 season as being made on 17 May 2010. This suggests that playmakerstats.com is probably on point here. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:52, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Ok i also added games from the swiss cup 2012/13 from playmakerstats. Bakermannn (talk) 20:57, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Rico Lewis

Hello. Dude. There are many sites that confirm the actual full name of Rico Lewis. And after doin research on those Prem lists; i found out a large number of irregularities and wrong spellings as well as no complete names. Just fyi Rubenaf16 (talk) 19:44, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

@Rubenaf16: While the Premier League lists aren't always a hundred percent (and no source is, tbf), Henry simply isn't part of Lewis' full name. Per findmypast, his birth was registered with the first names of "Rico Mark". Henry seems to have originated from when his page here was first created with the full name given as "Rico Henry Lewis", despite the Premier League source used at the time giving his only middle name as Mark. Perhaps the editor who created the page, @OZOO:, could shed some light? I'm assuming you got him confused with Rico Henry? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:02, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

IFFHS world team for Rodri

Hello, I see the IFFHS world team was removed from Rodri’s honor list. I agree that to some extent it’s not that notable, but I think we just need to align it with all others’. Or we may need to remove this item from all other players who have received it to make it consistent. Waiwai444 (talk) 07:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Jude Bellingham

Hi mate, I agree not every goal is notable but this article already includes Bellingham's goal contributions in El Classico from previous games. I would argue as a personal achievement, which is what we're looking at since it is an individual's wiki page, scoring the winner in La Liga's biggest fixture of the season should be considered a notable contribution and therefore should be included. It can't be any worse than including goals against Girona or Charlton Athletic for example as is the case on his page. Wikipedeon (talk) 18:57, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Unsourced content warnings

You keep warning me for adding unsourced content. But what I'm adding is still 100% true and factual, even if unsouced. I simply do not know how to add sources, hence why I don't use them. What I add is still true, such as on Jarrad Branthwaite's page, and an old one on Darwin Nunez's page a while back now. Please stop warning me. What I add is still true, even if unsourced. Captaincy in opening sentence (VVD, Kyle Walker)

I added the fact Kyle Walker is captain for Man City to his page, and it got reverted. Is it just for the national team that a player is given credit for being a captain? Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe, Kane, all of them have it in the opening paragraph.

I think a similar thing happened with VVD, I edited his opening to say he's a captain, and it got reverted. (Even though everyone else has it)

Why? Char3290 (talk) 01:54, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

looking at Pepe's page, it appears he has Porto's captaincy shown in the opening statement. I mean this in no aggressive or disrespectful way, but we should atleast try to show consistency between pages, no? The vast majority of pages show captaincy in the opening paragraph. Char3290 (talk) 02:00, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

@Char3290: For me, being a team captain isn't notable enough to mention in the opening sentence of the lead, which should establish who the subject is and why they're notable. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:12, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Again, no agression, but want to help me go through every club captains page and remove it from their opening sentence to make this statement consistent? Char3290 (talk) 01:50, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

“I haven’t got it yet, no,” admits a smiling Christian in our UTD Podcast. “I’m supposed to get one. I will get a medal at some point.”

That interview was over a year ago so I think it is reasonable to assume he would have received it by now. He played in every round before the final so why wouldn't united give him one? Andrew701 (talk) 23:45, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

This old edit of yours edit broke the FA status for the article. Soccerway is a gambling statistics website and should be used sparingly, I would happily drop the FA until that's repaired and fixed. I was pretty clear about this is the FA arguments, Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of international goals scored by Harry Kane/archive1. Govvy (talk) 09:21, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

@Govvy: I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean when you say that my edit "broke" the article's featured status? I've checked the latest version of the article and it still has the star in the top right corner, and there hasn't been a discussion for it to be delisted as far as I can see.
Is there a policy or guideline regarding such sites that means they are not regarded as reliable sources, or that they "should be used sparingly", as you put it? I'd note that most of our football biographies use such sites (namely Soccerbase and Soccerway), and I can't say I've encountered this as a bone of contention before. So I'm afraid I'm really not seeing what the issue is. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:11, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
Because what you're doing is mirroring Soccerway or Soccerbase, and where do they talk about the goals in-depth? BBC, SkySports, other websites give depth to each goal. What wikipedia should not be is a mirror of other websites, so we really need to limit use of soccerway and base. Also, a lot of people don't realise, but each citation from those adds promotional level to the gambling sites and they love that. Analytics allow the websites to have higher search rating from the amount of citations wikipedia uses. I swear 99% of Wikipedians don't know that this is done. Anyway, I am strongly anti gambling because I've seen first hand what it has done to some people. I also feel we need to limit the use of these citations. Regards. Govvy (talk) 10:16, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
@Govvy: For the purpose of the list itself, we don't need references that discuss the goals in depth. They need only contain the details that need to be referenced, e.g. date, venue, score, result etc (while the goal numbers and caps are covered by the main worldfootball.net reference provided directly above the list). Other reliable sources will be out there that can do the same job, but I decided to add Soccerway references for consistency.
I'm not sure what you mean by "mirroring"? I mean, couldn't it be said that we're mirroring, to one extent or another, from any source when we're basing content on information taken from them? I'd say it's neither here nor there what sources we're using, as long as they're reliable.
I get what you're saying about gambling more generally, but, as above, if a source is considered reliable then it's fine for us to use. Whether we should be more discerning in the sources we use, with regards the gambling aspect, is something that would need to be discussed on agreed upon at a wider forum, such as the footy project. Hi! I've seen your recent edits on the Angel Gomes article and I just have a few questions about it. Why did you remove the Boavista and the Iniesta/Xavi pictures? They were quite relevant and copyright-free. Since you are an experienced admin, I prefer to ask you for advice before adding them back. Also, why did you remove the website/publisher internal links from the reference templates? Aren't we supposed to link, at least the first occurrence, websites, newspapers or publishers when we can? Thank you in advance for your answers and clarification. Best regards, AideDésintéressée (talk) 05:12, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

@AideDésintéressée: Hi. I removed the Boavista image as Gomes' face isn't visible and therefore, for me, serves little to no purpose. Personally, I'm not a fan of including images of people who aren't the subject on their biography, as it's not something I'd really expect to see, hence why I removed the the Iniestia/Xavi image. I get why it was there, though, as it builds upon the relevant text so I wouldn't be particularly opposed to it being restored.
Adding or retaining wikilinking the cite parameters for website, publisher etc isn't something I usually do, and, in my experience, seem more often than not to not be included. According to the cite web template documentation, they "may be wikilinked if relevant". To me, 'if relevant' seems a bit vague, but I'm assuming it essentially means 'if a target article exists'. As it's optional, I wouldn't be to worried about them being restored. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:58, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
I understand you about the Boavista picture; I actually hesitated when it came to keeping it before the GA review but I figured at the time it was nevertheless a way to illustrate the subsection. However, I prefer to restore the Iniesta/Xavi photo which refers to his models and is therefore rather relevant for the Style of play section. These two players are so close to Gomes due to their profile, I find it too important to do without it. AideDésintéressée (talk) 15:10, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

mate i would like to ask you. Some clubs report the full names of their players like Alderweireld. Whereas the full name squads published by FIFA are mostly incomplete. I dont know why thats being used as a fact checking medium for verification since i usually really on club profiles for proper info. Rubenaf16 (talk) 16:19, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

@Rubenaf16: In my experience, the FIFA squad lists are generally pretty good for full names, although I have seen a few Belgian names where they've omitted second middle names. Most clubs don't publish players' full names, but I see that Atleti have for Alderweireld. Whether it's actually Toby or Tobias I'm not sure, but I've a feeling it's just Toby as I think more sources would have published Tobias if it was actually that. List of Premier League winning players

Hey, you sent me a message about my edit adding Carlo Cudicini to the List of Premier League winning players article. I thought I had added a relevant source which was his Premier League profile page as that is what every other player had as their source. He played on the Chelsea team in 04-05 and 05-06 and had EPL appearances. Is that not enough to get an EPL title medal?

The edit is here: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=List_of_Premier_League_winning_players&oldid=1241806403

Thanks! Kpxexpress (talk) 00:15, 15 September 2024 (UTC)

@Kpxexpress: Hi. If a player is considered a competition winner by the Premier League, it is listed on the left side of their profile under 'Honours & Awards'. See Kyle Walker's profile as an example. Cudicini's profile doesn't include such a section, so he mustn't have made enough appearances to qualify for medals in those seasons. Understood. Thanks for the info! Kpxexpress (talk) 00:25, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Harry Maguire FA Cup 2024 winner

Hello, back in May, you reverted some changes in the honours section of the Harry Maguire page. According to his official Manchester United player profile, Harry Maguire is recognised as an FA Cup winner. Could you please check this?

"Despite Bruno Fernandes taking over as club captain, he was also an important member of the squad in 2023/24, scoring four goals in 31 games and winning another trophy - the FA Cup."

(This is also the case for Luke Shaw)

His full name is Arend Martijn Slot, according to [1][2] Frost 22:13, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

@Frost: My worry when removing it was that it might be one of those names that someone makes up on the subject's biography here, it goes unchallenged for years, and is used by other publications without question. I'm quite happy with the NOS source, hopefully they actually know it's his name and haven't just gone off his page here. I see it's been added by another editor, anyway.
