So i've tried putting my head around it but i'm going to need some help with sorting out the userboxes into categories. Can I get a few contributors to suggest a few categories that different userboxes can go into? Take a look at my user page's userboxes then make your suggestions here. Thank you kindly. Please let there be at least 5 suggestions for userbox categories before tagging this as helped. If you're confused what I mean by 'by category' I mean what they can be organised into such as My WikiProject Room. MIVP - Allow us to be of assistance to you. (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 11:43, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- There a userboxes for users who are addicted to userboxes, I don't like them... not important - User:The Raven's Apprentice/Userboxes/User UBXlove (transclusions) is one of them, look at the userpages that transclude it, most of them have categories you could use, such as User:NeonMerlin/boxes and User:Frexe. There are other userboxes like that one, about being addicted to userboxes, the transclusions list of those ones would help you too, but I can't seem to find them at the moment. -- Patchy1 12:29, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Are there any userboxes you haven't transcluded to your userpage?
- I'd suggest the following divisions: Personal (who you are), Wikipedia-related (what you're involved in here), Interests (what you like), Fun (everything else). Yunshui 雲水 12:35, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- You've both been fantastic at giving me ideas for how to sort them out, I think i've got enough here to get them into categories therefore i've marked it as 'helped'. Patchy, as always your help was great but Yunshui made it clearest. Anyone for food barnstars? I've had something of a relaxed day today and am feeling generous but throwing ideas around in general isn't really full-on barnstar material, not that I don't appreciate the help, I really do so thanks. MIVP - Allow us to be of assistance to you. (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 14:48, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi. I have undone your {{db-band}} tag on this article as it is not appropriate. My rationale is on the talk page. I would recommend either proposing deletion via WP:PROD or boldly redirecting to Say Anything (band). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:07, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't take offense that you're trying to do this cleanup. However, like the person said above, a speedy isn't the right thing in the case of an article with this long a history and this many edits. Thanks for your work on the Wiki! --Mblumber (talk) 16:40, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

A friendly note about dead references, link rot, and prodding
[edit]Hi, Matticusmadness, and thanks very much for your many positive contributions to Wikipedia. I noted that at Jim Giles (meteorologist) you deleted the article's one existing source because the URL no longer worked, and then proposed deletion for the article on the basis that it had no sources. Please keep in mind that there is no requirement that sources be available on line. Also, rather than deleting dead links, editors are requested either to try to replace or fix them, or to mark them for future attention. In this case, for example, I was quickly able to find a new URL for that source, as well as a number of other sources for the article. Please have a look at WP:DEADREF and WP:LINKROT for more on how to handle dead links.
On a related subject, please note that the proposed deletion process outlined at WP:Proposed deletion ("prodding") is a summary procedure intended for articles whose deletion is expected to be "uncontroversial". Many of the articles you've proposed for deletion look to me like they deserve it, but some don't: an example is Líneas Aéreas Federales, which is on its face, a notable topic (a controversial national government entity in Argentina) and for which there are a whole bunch of Spanish-language sources already showing at the Spanish Wikipedia version of the article. Before I propose an article for deletion (either via WP:PROD or via the more formal process of WP:Articles for deletion), I generally look for sources through searches on Google News (including the Archives section) and Google Books, and if it's a subject from a non-English speaking country, I check to see if there's a better-sourced version of the article in the appropriate language version of Wikipedia.
Thanks again for your many valuable contributions here, and happy editing. Regards, --Arxiloxos (talk) 22:57, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
- Wow, WP just keeps on surprising me with new things. I can explain my actions however. The thing is most of the time that i'm on WP i'm stuck with 'Strict Safesearch' on Google so searches for sources can prove to be harder to do.
- To be honest with you Arx while doing my running around dropping PRODs all over these articles I hadn't picked up the 'uncontroversial' thing, i'll bear that in mind so thanks for that. I'll start trying to decide an AfD article from a PROD article and well another wikipedian can just tell me if I goof up. Thanks for the ideas on where else to look for sources mind you. If you've looked at my user page you'll notice I have my 'Source Search Analysis' listed, I really need to get back to that.
- Thank you for your suggestions for improving my ability to assist the encyclopaedia. MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 10:03, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your consideration in suggesting a renaming for that attack account; to tell you the truth, I'd be perfectly fine leaving it as is, as it's kind of a silly name anyway, and also sort of a perverse honor to finally get a customized stalker after all this time. :-) Best, --Arxiloxos (talk) 06:52, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Talk page refactoring
[edit]Hi. Please don't change other people's talk page comments, as you did here. Doing so is contrary to the guidelines and can be very confusing. Thanks. Rivertorch (talk) 20:15, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- Alright I took a look at TPO and fair enough at the editing the comments by users however what about the editing of the 'preceding unsigned comment' stuff Sinebot leaves? In my book that's really just there as a placeholder for somebody to later delete leaving just the signature there and I have in the past heard from An Admin that there's no rules against removing Sinebot's 'unsigned' text. [1] "I'm fairly sure we don't have any policies against it". Besides that Sinebot is... well... a bot so it's unlikely to irritate them.
- Also I apologize if I at all come across as rude. I understand that you are just trying to point me in the right direction. i'm about 5-10 minutes out of a failed attempt to cheer a friend up is all so i'm a bit troubled. MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 22:21, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- As far as I know, Yunshui is correct: there's no explicit rule against removing the Sinebot wording. He did say it was "a bit odd". Now, "odd" isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in this case it might not be a very good thing, and here's why. Removing the wording gives the impression that the users actually have signed comments that they haven't signed. I can think of a couple contexts where that could be actually misleading (they're fairly esoteric, but they do exist), but the main advantage of Sinebot sigs is that they tell us at a glance that we're looking at comments from newbies. This can be very helpful in terms of knowing how to respond (or whether to respond at all). And when a newbie returns to check on the discussion, he or she sees what Sinebot did and gets this really cool, subtle hint: Hmm, I didn't sign my post. I'd better do that next time. Anyway, look at it this way: Sinebot is programmed to do exactly what it does. If its creators (and the community) wanted it simply to fake a signature and time stamp, then it would be programmed to do that instead.
- Btw, nothing you've said seems the slightest bit rude, and I hope your friend is okay. Incidentally, you're the first person I've ever known to self-revert on my talk page after leaving a talkback. Major kudos for that, and if I may be so bold, I'll say it indicates way too much clue to be spending your precious editing time mopping up after a bot. If you like working with talk pages, one thing you might try instead is catching the unsigned posts that Sinebot misses. Quite a few fall through the cracks, and Template:Unsigned lets you do manually what the bot does automatically. I use it frequently. Rivertorch (talk) 07:13, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

I received a message from YOU regarding a proposal to delete the above mentioned article. It makes no sense. First it claims the article is unsourced as a justification for its deletion. The article has two sources already added, plus an external link to the Alumni Association. Besides, this is not a BLP. There are no grounds for removal of this article. Fortunately, I do not find anything attached to the article that suggests proceedings have taken place, just the message to my talk page. Please do not pursue this. Please do not pursue proposed deletion of any article like this. If you have a problem with articles that look like this, I would suggest you re-evaluate your standards for proposing deletion. Find another activity to try to positively add to the wikipedia project instead. Trackinfo (talk) 20:35, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, I just noted another editor removed your PROD on the same grounds that it was senseless. Trackinfo (talk) 20:39, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Under AGF i'm going to assume you're confused thinking that I tagged this thing under a BLPPROD, the edit summary Twinkle left clearly states that it was a regular PROD, also if you would kindly check the Page History you will see that who DePRODed it added sources, it was not pointless at the time of its adding, Don't worry, we've both made mistakes here. Just think of it as a two sided learning experience :) MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 08:32, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- First I should clarify my BLP reference. We have the Unsourced BLP commandment to protect wikipedia from liability reporting incorrect information about living people. That is why (even though I don't agree with the harsh penalty) we allow deletion of an unsourced article. This is about a dead (or more correctly, defunct) school. There is no liability and thus no need for the rushed (as you proposed) harsh penalty. Even if this had been a totally fraudulent article, there is no reason for a rush to judgement. Since it is obviously not fraud, you could have done a little research of your own, to solve your sourcing issue, to protect the article. So the issue I have here is beyond protecting this article, is to ask you to reevaluate the way you seek to PROD, seek to delete wikipedia content, particularly on a subject you obviously know nothing about. Before you attack, research and learn. You might find fraud here somewhere, but I suspect it will be rare. Instead you'll find well meaning articles, that should be improved and protected. Trackinfo (talk) 09:32, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Ah now I follow. If you look on my talk page above I was told it's a good idea to only PROD Uncontroversial Topics. Judging by your reply i'm failing that? MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 09:42, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, sorry. You got a little of my venting toward other people who mindlessly try to delete. Please don't be like them. As a principle, a little research on your part before you PROD goes a long way and saves needless trouble. Trackinfo (talk)
No problem, you're the pro (even if you did cause an upset at ANI 3 years ago) in this conversation. If there's anything i've learned about Wikipedia it's that it's a learning experience. Have you ever heard Son of Man by Phil Collins? In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn, we're doing that here on Wikipedia, we're teaching and learning by working to improve our encyclopedia. Anyway I figure you're UK and either working or in school so i'll shut up and let you get on with things, have a good day :) MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 11:56, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- I've been outspoken, no doubt. And I get touchy when someone goes after an article (albeit a stub) that I created, about a school I have actually visited, with alumni I actually know. Its all a learning experience. I've learned more from wikipedia than I ever could have taught. But you've obviously seen the wars I've been through to try to protect the information we have here. When something is removed from the public's view on someone else's senseless whim, that is equivalent with censorship and prevents the knowledge we have here from being passed down to other readers and future generations. Trackinfo (talk) 20:04, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Did you ever consider becoming a teacher? Because really i'd think you'd make a great one. MIVP - (Can I Help?) (Maybe a bit of tea for thought?) 20:10, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Hello,
Nice to meet you Matticusmadness. I saw the message you left at my talk page just now, and I want to thank you for that message :P First of all, I don't really consider Wikipedia as "high difficulty stuff" lol. Adding content and contributing here is much fun, and I don't see the task stressful or anyway difficult :P. How did I join wikipedia? I was searching for stuff in a school project in 2009, and I came across an article with some mistakes (dont ask me which, i dont remember now :P), so I corrected that mistake with the school's computer. After a few months, I found it interesting to actually help and contribute as a wikipedian, so I registered an account :P As for the CSD articles, I was indeed a young kid back then, and I have no idea of the notability guidelines that all wikipedians must adhere to during article creation. As a result, I made some non-notable articles and they were speedily deleted lol. As for Club Penguin Wiki, I start editing there in a similar way - found mistakes in their articles, registered an account and correct them :P. You are so cool to have membership in Club Penguin. I have played Club penguin for more than like 5 years, and I never had a membership :P Finally, it really depends on your definition of a "kid" to judge whether I am one of them or not :P. I saw your age on your wikipedia profile. I don't want to reveal too much information in this virtual world, but all I can say is I am roughly 2 and a half year younger than you. Oh btw, I am not the only user who edit here besides Club Penguin Wiki. Some other users there occasionally edit Wikipedia too. Thanks. --Dps04 (talk) 12:00, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Matticus. Just an FYI - the standard procedure in softerblock cases like these is for the user to request unblock using the {{unblock-un}}
template (as documented in the block message). Assuming that their proposed new username fits the bill, the next passing admin will unblock them and bundle them off to WP:CHU (the admin closure template for {{softerblock}}
even has a pre-written message with the link). Whilst blocking might have been a little over-hasty, MiamiToday had been warned (by Drm310) two days ago about their inappropriate username, together with a link to WP:CHU, so to claim that they weren't give fair warning isn't exactly true - they were told the name was inappropriate, told how to change it, and chose to ignore it. A block at this stage isn't inappropriate, especially when it can be easily lifted by following the instructions provided. Yunshui 雲水 13:36, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

I can still call it out to WP Croatia's talk page so that somebody independent can assess it though if you'd prefer. MIVP (I Can Help? ◕‿◕) - (Chocolate Cakes) 10:01, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Re: Sockpuppetry Alarm
[edit]Re your message: No, it is not actionable. In this particular case, the use of a second account is okay. The original account was soft blocked because it was in violation of user name policy due it being a promotional name. Creating another account with a name that represents themselves as an individual is fine and is the proper thing to do. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 19:01, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- D,OH. I totally forgot about that part of policy. Good thing I don't have the block tools huh? Heh. Alright thanks for putting me right. MM (What's up pup?) - (Chocolate Cakes ◕‿◕) 19:31, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- No worries. Having the block tools doesn't mean you don't make mistakes. Just yesterday I left a block notice for somebody that I failed to block. So I had my own D'oh! moment. Not the first time I've done that. Or the time I "indefinite" blocked somebody for 3 hours. Or when I clicked revert on the wrong editor. Or when I got blocked (oh, wait, that wasn't me =)). -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 21:07, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
Thank You
[edit]Thank you for your kind greeting, Matticus. Bumpy start is putting it mildly. The only reason I started editing was because someone put a false death notice on the page of a musician whom I know in Seattle. I found it online when I was doing a search for something. Google had placed it in a large highlighted box and I just about had a heart attack when I read it! I had to check a few things to make certain that he hadn't died, but a family member of his did recently die, he's in mourning, and the whole family is grieving. Once I was assured he was very much alive I set about trying to correct his page (the accusation of vandalism). Initially, I didn't even realize that someone was out there reversing my edits; I thought that there was a technical glitch. The article in question had a very sketchy 5-year-old bio that was both poorly written and completely unsupported. The bio was totally ignored and neglected until I started trying to fix it. The next thing I know everybody and their brother is jumping all over me. If they were so concerned, why didn't they get up in arms about the false death notice that could have truly done emotional harm to some good people!?! So at every turn I was thwarted while I was trying to learn how to use the site which was (and still is) confusing and not user-friendly. I even had someone make a snide comment to me in the chatroom (wherein I had gone for help and advice) about his false death notice - in essence - that it was not very important! I had to tell the person in question that I would like to see how he felt if someone planted a false death notice about him and his elderly mom found it after the recent death of another family member. So "bumpy start" is a vast understatement. Dealing with mean-spirited individuals in a situation like that isn't any picnic.
I truly appreciate that you reached out to me in kindness and offered assistance. I have two articles in the works and while I do wish to complete them, I have serious doubts about continuing on Wikipedia after they are finished. I don't believe that my other article (the "Speedy Deletion") about Joe Baque looks in the least bit like an "adoring eulogy for someone who is not yet dead." I was quoting from various newspaper articles about a man who is very well-respected in the jazz community for his many accomplishments over a long lifetime of achievements. If one can't quote from historical references like newspapers without being criticized, then how in the heck is one supposed to write an article? After a long and fruitful career, he has earned the compliments that have been put in print about him so why shouldn't I quote them? There are other articles on this site that are flattering about their subjects. So I don't see the problem other than that the opinions expressed by the administrators on Wikipedia are very subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure, no? And so many people attacking/criticizing a new editor is in very bad form and indeed drives folks away. Before the Baque article was "Speedily Deleted" another administrator had put a note on it requesting folks to read my note pertaining to the fact that the article was a work in progress and that I was trying to figure out how to use the site. However, that person's considerate note wasn't heeded.
I'll check out the links you posted to me when I have the time. I just have a very bad taste in my mouth right now where Wikipedia is concerned. Thanks again for your kindness. Dat JaZzCat (talk) 09:43, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- Okay I've given this thought and I think I know where to start. First I must ask. Was there a [1] or other such number after the information about his death? If not then the information could fairly be challenged by leaving a notice on the talk page saying that you've removed the content because it's unsourced or simply removing the content and stating in the edit summary that it was unsourced. If somebody wants it in that badly then they could find a source that passes GNG, our General Notability Guidelines. If it DID have [a number] then it would be in the rules to revert it, per GNG stated above.
- The next thing that caught my attention was the bit about the comment in the Chat Room. Was this IRC? Either way I have a pretty strong feeling they may have been breaking NPA, our Policy on not attacking editors. With regards to not sticking around after completing the articles well it's your call, many of our editors come to do one or two things then disappear, but really there is a lot to do here and if you stick around you may find an article on something you have a deep liking of. For example I've done some heavy contributing to Pursuit Force and Pursuit Force Extreme Justice because I love those two games. You'll probably settle into one other area of helping Wikipedia too. We have the coding lovers, the people that clean the dusty corners, the people that handle the vandals, the social groups, you name em we probably have them! You'll fit in somewhere if you stick around.
- The fact that your page was deleted even though you were working on it and another Admin had marked it as 'in progress' strikes me though. The Admins generally work together. Can you tell me the Admin that tagged it as 'in progress' and who deleted it so that I may initiate my own lines of inquiry? (Nice little game quote there XD)
- I couldn't agree more that this is not the best way for Wikipedians to be introduced but unfortunately it is how it happens for many. I got a lucky break because I signed up to contribute to a discussion about if an article should be deleted (Generally known as AFD) but I've seen enough to know it's how it works. So thanks for toughing it out and sticking around.
- If you'd like I can get you into contact with one of the Adopt-A-User experts who can explain it better then I can. Other then that yeah I think I've said everything that I can. I wish you luck in creating those two articles. If there's any issues that I failed to address there feel free to point it out and I'll see what I can say about it. Hi there Matticusmadness! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?
If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?
First off, go here and add {{Tick}} ( ) next to your name if you're still part of the project.
Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.
You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

Pernicious
[edit]No, it's on purpose, not a bug. The bot pulls out the pernic in the name and then sees that as a variant of pemis, which believe it or not has been used in the past by vandals trying to escape the filters for the word "penis". Yes it's going to put up mostly false positives but that's the way bot is by design. We could certainly whitelist "pernicious" but I think it's fairly rare in usernames. Likewise Im sure "lesbo" has been useful in the past at least a few times, and the false positives are easy enough to discern. Your comments on the other names are definitely spot-on and helpful, so thank you. —Soap— 12:34, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, heh, my mistake ^^' I'm not exactly attuned to all of the possible ways that people can skip the filters, in fact most of the skips that I know are always mentioned by DQBot anyway, and back when I was doing those it was 4AM so my brain wasn't at its highest functioning power. Anyway glad I can help UAA. That place is overrun with trouble. Question, how well do you think I would do at RfA if I said my main area of focus as an Admin would be UAA? MM (What's up pup?) - (Chocolate Cakes ◕‿◕) 12:44, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure you'd get roasted at RfA if you tried running now while you have only about 1200 edits, regardless what you planned to work on or how productive you've been in the past. Sad but true. The average successful RfA candidate these days probably has about 20000 edits. But if you stick around a year or so and stay out of trouble you'd have a pretty good chance. —Soap— 16:20, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

March Against Monsanto
[edit]I didn't nominate it for deletion because you edited it. This came up because one of the editors went to the WP:Help Desk and ranted about the deletion of the poorly formatted table, suggesting that the person who deleted the table was working for Monsanto. I went to the article and decided it was a mess. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:15, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Make Way for Willie Nelson
[edit]Not a problem, just did it now. Don't worry, you didn't actually do anything incorrectly; the standard AFD process is for an uninvolved administrator to do the final closure, so while you would certainly be allowed to directly close a discussion yourself when you're withdrawing a nomination that you made, it's perfectly okay to leave the final closure to another administrator in accordance with the typical procedure too.
But if you ever do want to get into closing AFD discussions, for the record the process is to put {{subst:at}} at the top of the page followed by the decision (keep, delete, merge, withdrawn, etc.) and your signature, and {{subst:ab}} at the bottom. Bearcat (talk) 18:26, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Grazie Yun. I'm already getting on with the next section. The questions in 'Interaction' are done if you want to take a look. (I think we both know i'll whizz through this bit with gold stars XD) Dyou enjoy being a part time teacher? MM (Report findings) (Past espionage) 12:43, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- I actually am a part-time teacher (aikido, t'ai chi and - less physically - EFL). I do enjoy it, yes; had I any faith that Mr Gove's current assault on our nation's teachers was a short-term problem I might have considered retraining. As it is, I'd rather boil my head in beef dripping than put myself through the hell some of my proper schoolteacher friends call a career. Yunshui 雲水 13:09, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- Awesome. That explains how you're so good at Wikipedia. You're used to dealing with people who need teaching. It helps doesn't it? I often get other students asking me to explain the notes when they haven't been listening in lessons so I know that feeling. [edit]Hi,
When a section is collapsed/closed, it usually means that the discussion is closed, and no further comments/replies must be added. I hope you'll keep this in mind in the future.
Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:27, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Noted, thanks Soni. My regular point of knowing it's closed is if it's got the purple border around it, but thanks for the heads up. MM (Report findings) (Past espionage) 08:58, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
- Sometimes people also collapse conversations rather than the formal purple closing, especially when the discussion is too long. Its usually sensible to check why the discussion was collapsed before commenting inside/outside it, or to uncollapse it. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 09:07, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Requesting your input re the Wikipedia Astrology Project
[edit]Hi Matticusmadness I have joined the Wikipedia Astrology project today and am contacting you as a listed member of that project. There has been a proposal to consider the project dead and merge it with 12 other alternative subjects into a new wiki project which would oversee all aspects of fringe. I think it would be a shame to lose the astrology project on the basis that it has no active participants without contacting the members directly and exploring ideas for new ways to work together on astrology-related pages. GFI MAX Backup article review
[edit]Hi,
I have recreated the page GFI MAX Backup as a userdraft. I more or less finished it. It was written that I can ask for its review. So, can somebody review it ,please, and tell me what I need to improve? Thank you,

[edit]Hi Matticus. I spotted this edit whilst reviewing the user's unblock request - the username template was perfectly correct, the little diatribe that followed, less so. Remember that not every person coming to Wikipedia for the first time understands what the site is for, or why they can't write about their company - in many cases, such as this one, they also don't have English as a first language. Please try and remain civil and helpful even when such editors are inadvertently violating Wikipedia's policy - "...there's the door. Disappear, please," is dismissive, rude and unnecessary. - Whoops. I didn't think either the user of Spearhead Edu or anyone else would be back there after that block since it seemed to only be there as a single-purpose. Plus that wasn't as bad as it could have been, but fair dice Yun, no setting the alligator on the single-purpose person. MM (Report findings) (Past espionage) 17:25, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
