Update chat

You know its harder than I suspected when your pride and joy is edited by others, despite that being the backbone of Wikipedia. People have been editing Mozambican War of Independence! *freigns shoch and horror* scary stuff. Remember how I was never very happy with the Russian-Circassian War? Another user picked up on the POV problems (such crap sources, tis all I could get my hands on) and together hopefully we will be able to work the article into a respectable format. Colombian Civil War (1860-1862) is still sitting quietly waiting for an expert, as is Military history of Oceania. You know I think one of the biggest problems here is that no one seems to respond to the EXPERT NEEDED tags, so those two articles are just sitting quietly at the moment. WP:LE is also moving on nicely, we are finishing up a new project to get articles on policing in every european country, it was about 50% covered when the drive started about 2 weeks ago, and now is about 85% done. Not far to go!

So do you have any news? SGGH speak! 18:50, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Sounds interesting! I'm trying to find another missing topic to further my FA article practice. I think I have learned good lessons from the two previous FAs and am ready to write a real class one. SGGH speak! 11:11, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Interesting story

Check out the top story in the USMC Portal "In the news" section. It brought a smile to me. — ERcheck (talk) 23:06, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I was referring to the Army album. If you read the article that it points to, you will find out that the picture was actually given to the record company by the Army band.

Image issues

Hi, Marine 69-71. I'm grouping below some issues I found with some image you've uploaded/edited. --Abu badali (talk) 18:54, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Question on intro to Ángel Ramos (educator)

Tony, The introductory sentence in the says that he "is believed to be one of only a few deaf Hispanics to earn a doctorate." See this [1] note in his profile on his foundation website. It says he is the first deaf person of Hispanic descent to receive a doctorate from Gallaudet. Do you have a different reference that addresses the broader idea that is in the article intro? You could make the more specific intro about first from Gallaudet. Do you have a copy of the DeafLife article? It would be good to have some information in the article describing the content of the article. — ERcheck (talk) 21:50, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Abu, I followed your instructions and today I received the first e-mail from ORTS in regard to Image:Cumpianoatwork.jpg. In the e-mail they also sent this: Ticket#2007052110016369. So, is that it or am I supposed to do something else? Tony the Marine 16:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

You just have to add {{PermissionOTRS-ID|2007052110016369}} to the image's description page and to accept my most sincere congratulations! ;) --Abu badali (talk) 16:53, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and he has removed images from at least this article of yours if not more. Citing similar issues as that which he talked about regarding the deaflife image. SGGH speak! 21:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

I put my comments on the picture of and, I'm very sorry to say... I think fair-use doesn't apply. I know it's stupid, but that's how I understood the policy. I originally did not want to provide an opinion, but I felt policy was pretty clear on that. I am truly sorry for it, but my argument is based on the fine points of the policy, and not my personal opinion.

But now it seems we're gonna have to delete a plethora of images all across Wikipedia, and it just doesn't seem right. I added to my comments my personal opinion on this in that image, especially the nominator's arbitration case.

Tony, I hope this doesn't affect our collaborations. I greatly admire your work and contributions. You can count on me anytime, and I hope this situation does not change your mind on that. It is just a picture, and your 18,000+ edits far outweigh this mie*da, even the nominator's. - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 23:59, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Marine. Could you take a look at the copyright information on this image? Its license tag says it's public domain because it was publisehd before 1923, but this is seems inaccurate. As it seems an official photo for something, I tried to find this image in .gov websites, but I couldn't. The source url you provided is a .com website that claims copyright over it's contents (but the url isn't working, anyway). Best regards, --Abu badali (talk) 17:29, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Cropping

Hi, again. A different issue here. I noticed here you posted a comment explaining you don't perming cropping of an image you uploaded. Do you understand this is not compatible with licensing the image under GFDL and CC-BY-SA? Indeed, if you, as the copyright holder, is not prepared to allow modifications to your work, we can't accept that on Wikipedia.

User created material, may it be text or images, must be free.

So, was your intentions to really license these images under a free licensing, or do you feel uncomfortable in allowing anyone to modify your image? --Abu badali (talk) 17:35, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Abu, how are you? I'll be returning from my trip tomorrow. I dropped by Wiki to take a look at things. The Maurice image that you mentioned came from here: www.mdx-way.com/about/ images/Ferre_Maurice_A.jpg. That was uploaded some time ago and definitely the tag is wrong. I'm not sure if the image is free. Take a look at it and do the right thing.
In regard to the cropping, I will be willing to upload a cropped version of the same image. I just don't want it to be cropped yet by someone else because it will interfere with the gallery that I have. When I get back tomorrow, I will crop a another version of the same image and then upload it to the article. Take care. Tony the Marine 01:53, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Oh, now I understand. You agree with the cropping but you want the cropped version to be uploaded with a different name, because you still want the original uncropped version around. That's ok.
The url you gave for the Maurice image seems not to be working for me. I'll test it again latter.
Enjoy your trip! Best regards, --Abu badali (talk) 02:08, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Memorial Day mention of Tony the Marine

Here's an excerpt of Senate President MacClintock's speech before unveiling the names of eight servicemen at the Memorial Wall in San Juan yesterday:

I nominated my article Tompkins Square Park Police Riot for FA status

From the nomination page:
(self-nomination)This article is simply excellent. Excellent writing, interesting subject matter, improved during its Good Article trial, and eye-witnesses have left notes on the Talk page that talk about the article being so accurate, it's like they were living it all over again. Written in a NPOV and heavily cited with the highest of sources, it includes GFDL media, is wikified to the fullest, a fantastic "See Also" section, and looks at the story from every angle. --David Shankbone 18:36, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tony, I have a specific question I would rather bring up here rather than at Talk:David M. Gonzales. Here you appear to state that Image:Press Release2.jpg is not your work. However, you license it as your work. If you are not the creator/writer of the press release, you do not own the copyright and cannot release rights to it. Please fix the licensing or delete the image. The other issue is resolved, for me at least, by the alternate sourcing. Thanks, BanyanTree 08:12, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Memorial Day mention

Tony: The speech was broadcast live on WAPA Radio. The only part of the speech that was quoted in the papers was the part regarding not treating Iraq vets the same way that society treated many Vietnam vets a generation ago. I'll get the full text.Pr4ever 13:32, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Question

Abu, what would be a proper tag for a press release? Tony the Marine 16:38, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

What do you mean, an image showing the text of a press release? If so, I don't think we have a tag for that, since it's not common to such images deserve commentary. If you're sure can't convey the same information without the image in question, consider using {{Non-free fair use in}} together with a detailed fair use rationale explaining why the image is necessary (i.e., more than useful). The template {{non-free fair use rationale}} may be useful for writing the rationale.
But if I misunderstood what you meant by a "a press release", just let me know better. Is this image posted somewhere in the web? In which article do you plan to use it? --Abu badali (talk) 17:03, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm refering to this press release where I'm mentioned and which is my copy: Image:Press Release2.jpg. Now, I know that I tagged it wrong and I would like to fix it. Tony the Marine 17:16, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
In this case, we should be more worried about the copyright of the text than the one of the image itself. I believe the simple image of some text disposed in paper is not eligible for copyright, as it's not creative. Of course, we should still care about the copyright status of the two pictures attached to these press release.
So, I think this always boils down to who wrote (and owns the rights of) that text. Was the text released under some free license or to Public Domain? If not, I don't see how we could make a fair use claim for an image showing the whole text, in a readable resolution, and with the purpose of documenting the text's contents. This would be a reproduction of a copyrighted text.
But if the text is PD and so are the two pictures attached, you could tag it with {{PD-because}}, and explain the reasons.
If the text is PD but not the attached images, the whole work can be considered a derivative work of the images, and can be licensed as whatever license is compatible with the image's licensing.
But of course, this is just my input. I'm not a lawyer. I'm just trying to be helpful. Take care, --Abu badali (talk) 18:26, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Si mano...

I found about this earlier this morning (I am the vote labeled as Strongest Keep Ever), I don't get why he is defending his point like a Gallo de pelea intead of letting the AfD go as it should I think he is trying to prove a point, I already posted a comment about that right before I received your message. There's also his definition of the Medal of Honor, he describes it as an award, this is insane this isn't something you go to a pageant to win, but what can I do there are a lot of biased people in the world. On a more possitive note San Juan, Puerto Rico is now a Good Article! I went and filed a peer review request almost immediately after it passed GA, we will get this one to FA as soon as possible, cheers! - 18:05, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Spanish Immigration

Headline text

First and foremost, congratulations for all your articles which I find insightful and interesting and prove all your research and hard work. As a young Puertorrican who was born in my Borinquen Bella but grew up in the states, your articles have educated me as well as my brothers and other realtives here in the US that have had a need to have questions answered. I have specially enjoyed the articles writen regarding immigration to Puerto Rico from Africa, Ireland, Corsica, Germany, etc. Obviously, immigration from these countries has been important and I do not want to take any credit from them whatsoever. But I was wondering why no article has ever been writen about the most important and influential immigration to our island as of yet and that would be the immigration coming from mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. With so much research done by people of the likes of Estela Cifre de Loubriel, Fernao Pico, etc., I am quite surprised that no one has found this immigration interesting enough to write an article. What are your thoughts on this subject. Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!

I don't want to think about Ty Cobb right now...I have far bigger issues than a sockpuppet to worry about with the article (namely, saving it's GA status). As far as Vic Po--ahem, Victor Pellot is concerned...it needs copyediting and may need another source or two. I don't know the person that runs the 50meg website that was apparently used as a reference to part of the article and I need to find out if it's a reliable enough link to use. But the article looks a lot more tolerable than the version I tagged.  :) -- transaspie 21:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

request your help with Wikiquette alert - dispute between User:XLR8TION and User:74.225.36.136

Greetings. I've been helping out with improving the WP:WQA page and responding to some of the complaints.

I'm writing to you about this new alert: Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts#Dispute with User:XLR8TION at Sammy Davis, Jr. article, because when I took a look at the interactions of those two editors I saw that they have been tangling often on other articles as well and that you have already issued some warnings in that regard.

If you have time, I invite you to visit the alert linked above and either respond there or communicate directly with the two editors involved. I'm already maxed out on my time with helping on the alerts so I can't do it. Also, I'm not an administrator, and I have a feeling that considering some of the pretty extreme statements I've seen between them in my initial research, this situation may need administrative intervention anyway.

If you prefer not to get involved, please let me know and I'll find another way, perhaps a request for help at WP:ANI. I though it best to ask you first since you are already familiar with these editors.

Thanks for considering my request. --Parzival418 Hello 22:54, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Chay Santini, by XLR8TION, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Chay Santini fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Apparent vanity page

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Chay Santini, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Chay Santini itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 23:17, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Just a note — since "vanity" is not a criterion for speedy deletion, I removed the tag. I might help the article if the first paragraph included notable achievements, with more details in the body of the article. — ERcheck (talk) 02:50, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Your comments on the Elvira Arellano article

Hi Tony, I saw your comments regarding the aforementioned article. I'm not interested in "owning" the article but I am interested in accuracy, hence why I added the quotes and paraphrases from the legal brief. In light of your comments about the improvements to the article being well written and well sourced, would you feel comfortable reverting the article back to 08 JUN (i.e. before Evrik changed it on his own) as that seems the only intellectually honest thing to do IMHO. I would do it myself, however, between Evrik and his ally Ramsey2006 an edit war will quickly ensue and the issue of accuracy will get lost. --LordPathogen 02:21, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Btw, I noticed Evrik (without consultation) has created another archive page for this article. While I am not opposed to archiving material going back to 2006, I am opposed to archiving material that only goes back to May and June of 2007, especially since it is relevent to current and ongoing discussions. In view of his disruptive behaviour, I am forced to think he is doing so in order to (in effect) "hide" data pertinent to the current debate from all but the most astute observers. I may be wrong on that, but frankly, I don't think I am if history is any lesson. --LordPathogen 02:41, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

UPDATE- I have requested formal Mediation. --LordPathogen 17:28, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Any idea?

Hi Tony, any idea what Chicaneo seems so angry with me? I've tried to answer her but she only seems to get angrier... --LordPathogen 11:55, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Following some disagreements at Talk:List of Puerto Ricans and discussion at my talk page, we're suggesting trying to work out some consensus about recent additions to List of Puerto Ricans, particularly those made by User:Entre-Nos. We'd value your input. --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 05:15, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

That racist IP again...

Hey Tony check it out [3], I think this asshole is taunting us, after all those racist edits it's clear this is a provocation. Creo que es hora de que este pendejo see vaya a editar con los Panchos. - 08:33, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
