⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Tapastic icon.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 03:54, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. MfD nomination of Portal:Webcomics

Portal:Webcomics, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Webcomics and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Portal:Webcomics during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Legacypac (talk) 19:56, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Apologies

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Webcomics recently closed as delete. The closing admin did not elaborate on his reasons for deleting, so I can't expect what did the portal in at the end of the day. It's a real bad let down. (As you probably already know, but I feel the need to restate anyways) The only outlet to continue forward would be to first discuss with the admin and possibly a deletion review failing that. Should we just give up on it? –MJLTalk 01:00, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, @MJL:. Yeah, I do feel really bad about it, but I don't think it's really worth trying to safe it at this point. It has always been a passion project of mine and it has mostly served to keep me thinking about webcomics in different ways, give me article ideas, motivate me to get articles to a higher quality, etc, as well as a form of pride in my favorite medium, I guess. I don't think it's worth the effort of other editors to reinstate it (even if it wasn't worth the effort to nominate it for deletion in the first place :/ ). If you want, you can put it up for a deletion review, and I would of course gladly give comments in its favor. But I don't want to waste anyone's time. I don't know if it is a lot of work to reinstate all those sub-pages that one has to use to get a portal to work, so that's definitely something I'm worried about. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 13:30, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm... Honestly I think we should still try do something. If I was as established as an editor as you, then I probably would have written the deletion review already. I'm just too drama prone for it to be anything meaningful coming from me. Maybe we should ask the working group what they think? By the way, according to your userpage you go by they/them pronouns. However, if I use the gender magic words, it currently looks like so: {{gender:Maplestrip|he/him/his|she/her/hers|they/them/their}}MJLTalk 16:52, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
I only mention that the pronoun thing to ask which is preferred? –MJLTalk 17:03, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
@MJL: The webcomic workgroup is basically just Oornery and I. It is not a particularly active community. If we want to reach a bigger audience, we should contact WikiProject Comics and see if anyone on there cares. I'm impressed that you think I'm less drama-prone than you, though. I feel like way too many of my articles have been deleted over the years. The deletion of portal actually made me decide to take a long break from the website, though I still keep track of my notifications as you can see. As for my gender, feel free to use both masculine and feminine pronouns; it doesn't matter much to me at all. I'm not the biggest fan of the singular they for myself, actually, and just have it on my userpage because I do consider it standard English grammar. Sorry for the confusement ^_^; ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 18:51, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
(Thank you for the pings btw) Well, let's make the working group bigger! Individuals like Acori may want to join and such. Also, Maple, you have over 12,000 mainspace edits which accounts for 63.6% of your total contributions. If there was any evidence you were prone to drama, then I am not seeing it. I checked your talk page history and everything. I can say with confidence however, that I have read articles you have created countless times before ever even interacting with you. You have to give yourself a little more credit here. –MJLTalk 19:27, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
@MJL: Ok, I really do appreciate that peptalk. I'll look into the deletion review process tomorrow and see if it's even possible for a portal. Thanks, MJL. As for expanding the Webcomics Project in general, well, it does look like Acori is a Homestuck fan, so maybe there's an opportunity there? ^_^ ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 20:08, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
@MJL: Thanks for the ping! I've been taking a semi-wikibreak lately due to generally low energy (I haven't even been doing the Traffic Report for the Signpost, which is a fairly big deal for me) but I would 100% be up for that working group when I'm feeling better! Potential source

I found out that the 2008 edition of Comics and Sequential Art has a section on webcomics, so I got scans of the pages discussing them (and digital art) in case it proves useful: [1] Oornery (talk) 06:18, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

@Oornery: Oh wow, Oornery, this is really cool! The images alone are just really cool to see. Definitely downloading these pages. Thank you a lot :) ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 10:59, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
I also have it as a PDF, if you'd prefer that. I just wasn't sure how to share a PDF.
Come to think of it, maybe we should have some kind of shared folder where we (and anyone else interested in helping with webcomics) can share/organize sources we find? I'm not sure how such a thing might work. Oornery (talk) 00:20, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
@Oornery: I can set up a Google Drive for that, if you want! I have tons of webcomics-related sources, both Wikipedia-reliable and unreliable. Here's at least a link you can use to view a lot of the digital materials I have for general-purpose research: [2]. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 08:40, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
Nice! And I definitely would have some things to share. In related news, it looks like the 2008 ed. of Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative also has some stuff to say about webcomics, so I'm gonna try and get a hold of that. Also, I found a couple sources discussing the distinction between webcomics and digital comics, don't think we had any of those yet: [3] page 85, [4] Oornery (talk) 23:06, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
@Oornery: Awesome stuff! I added these two to the Drive, and I may look into how to apply these to our article on digital comics in particular. I'd love to give you editing rights on this Drive folder as well. Do you have a Google account? ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 08:14, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Opinion needed!

Hello Maple! How are you doing? I don't know if you're still following the Madoka characters page, but can I have your opinion on Kyoko Sakura, if you have time? Do you think it's ready for GA nomination? Also the article already has been copyedited but can you take a look at the prose? NotEnglishSpeaker (talk) 16:55, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

@NotEnglishSpeak: The article looks good! I copyedited a little but the prose looks very nice. Haven't checked the sources at all. You might want to write something about the Magia Record anime series, in which she also appears. Besides that, I think the article is pretty much ready for a Good Article nomination. Good luck, NotEnglishSpeak, you are doing great! ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 12:29, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Wow, thank you very much! Now I feel very confident to nominate the article thanks to you. About the Magia Record anime series, should I create a subsection for it or just write it under Other media section? NotEnglishSpeaker (talk) 14:06, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
I think it can go under Other media. It is a spin-off rather than a continuation of the original, I do feel. You can probably rewrite and expand the existing content about the Magia Record mobile game. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 14:17, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Alright, thank you very much! :) NotEnglishSpeaker (talk) 19:40, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Btw, I'm still not done with Homura Akemi's article, but what do you think of it? It looks kind of messed up. xD NotEnglishSpeaker (talk) 20:01, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
Just skimming it – I don't have the energy to copyedit it – I really like what it looks like. The size of the "Creation and development" and "Cultural impact" sections makes me very happy. I expect it can probably use a bit of trimming, but I really like what I see. Everything looks nicely sectioned off. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 12:49, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! I still need to work on "Design" section. As for Kyoko, I think I'll nominate her to GAN next week. NotEnglishSpeaker (talk) 14:40, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Haruhi Fujioka

Hello. The sentence that you eliminated was an accurate one. The one you wish to have stay in place is an opinion lacking citation. As someone who is gender-ambivalent, myself, I have long admired this character. However, being gender-ambivalent is not the same as being gender-fluid. Haruhi Fujioka has long been recognized to be gender-ambivalent, but has never been acknowledged by Bisco Hatori or anyone affiliated with the production of the manga or anime, to be genderqueer. As such, this trait cannot be ascribed to the character in an official article. However, if you wish this opinion to be listed, please put it in the proper segment of "Reception" along with its citation and full quotation. I'm sure you will agree that this is the correct way to proceed. If not, please communicate your reasons and make a suggestion for compromise on the article's wording. Yours in good faith. Ouranista (talk) 19:22, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Ouranista:. Sorry that we seem to be clashing here, I do hope we can come to a compromise we both prefer. For the lead/introduction section, it is normal to have a summary of body of the article. It's true that neither the terms "fluid gender" or "down-to-earth personality" are mentioned in reception. Maybe something like "queer gender" or using the quote "blasé approach to gender roles" would be more neutral for the lead section? I would like to have some of the reception in the lead section. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 08:22, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
I would like to avoid the phrasing female "biologically speaking" if possible, which I guess is why I reverted a bit more then I should have. I have a hard time considering alternative ways to phrase things, though maybe we can figure something out? I am not sure what purpose the changes you made in that section had, which made it difficult for me to figure out how to change it in a way I was comfortable with too. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 08:22, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for chatting with me about this. I'll address your last point first. My intention in trying to offer "biologically speaking" as an option was a way to offer a straight-forward description of a character without using "labels" or "descriptors" that do not have pertinence to the plot. Haruhi's case is ambiguous, much like herself. Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not offer the biological description as a choice (which I think it should), so I had to recant. Adding "citation needed" felt confrontational and didn't address the issue, either, so I also felt stymied. Coming back to the page now, otoh, I think the sentence you reverted saying: Having a "low perception of gender", Haruhi is able to join the club, keeping her sex secret from the club's clientele. (with citation) -- is fine.

It's the final sentence of the Intro paragraph that I feel, if included, must be worded according to WP:NPOV if the article is to portray Bisco Hatori's character as intended. As evidence, I point to the 2019 AnimeExpo in Los Angeles, CA, during which Hatori-sama appeared. While speaking at a live panel, she refused to clarify Haruhi's gender identity, saying that she wants the anime/manga to celebrate all gender identities. I was personally heartened by the inclusiveness of the attitude and believe that attitude is also a part of Haruhi Fujioka's character. This is why I believe gender-blind or gender ambivalent describes Haruhi most accurately and might end the back-and-forth editing that afflicts the page. May I suggest that the final sentence of the Intro paragraph read: Haruhi's character was positively received, both because of her down-to-earth personality and her "gender-blind attitude" towards life. No citation would be necessary, though having one might reduce further tampering. What do you think? Ouranista (talk) 15:43, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

I've not seen that panel, but that sounds lovely! I will look it up if If I can. Yes, your proposed change sounds perfect to me. "Gender-blind attitude towards life" describes the character well and matches the reception section perfectly. And... seriously, I'm sorry. I got territorial over this article, which obviously is not something I should do. Your edits are not bad at all and I'm glad you love Haruhi as much as I do, if not moreso. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 19:45, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

No worries. I've been guilty of becoming territorial at times, too. It happens to us all, I think. I'm glad we agree on the wording and will edit the page now (if you did not). Take Care. Ouranista (talk) 14:55, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
