Re your message: Not a problem. The talk page I had deleted was an orphaned talk page. An IP had started an attempt at writing an article about the house, but did not get very far. There was very little written and not enough to move into article space, so I deleted it. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 04:01, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Friedrich Armand Strubberg
Hello Maile66, thanks for the correction - of course Strubberg claimed to be the great-great-grandson of Frederick I. In general Barba's biography is full of assumptions and mainly based on Strubberg's own wrtitings, which in my opinion are mostly "pseudo-autobiographical". For exmaple his assertion to have fought in the Mexican-American war as Captain: I doubt that, because he was in Texas until the end of 1847, and the last battles of the war were fought in Sept. of that year. Also in April 1848 he was in Texas, when the case regarding the Nassau Plantation came to its end and Strubberg got $3.000 from the Adelsverein as compensation for not fulfilling the lease contract (see James C. Kearney, Nassau Plantation. The Evolution of a Texas German Slave Plantation. Denton, TX: University of North Texas Press 2010). He also is not enlisted in the Roster of the Mexican War Veterans (Robarts, Wm. Hugh: Mexican War Veterans. A Complete Roster of the Regular and Volunteer Troops in the War between the United States and Mexico, from 1846 to 1848. Wshington, D.C. 1887).FAStrubberg (talk) 12:25, 28 January 2012 (UTC)FAStrubberg
- I appreciate your input. We should try to get this article as accurate as possible. Verifiable, of course. You would seem to have access to German resources on this person. A year or two ago, all I knew about this person was as a mysterious Dr. Schubbert with an alleged murder in his past. Information comes in pieces. As for the end of the Mexican-American War, the Wikipedia article dates the end as February 1848. I'm not discounting anything you say, but hopefully this can all be verified for the article. Whatever you can add and verify only makes it a better article.Maile66 (talk) 12:40, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I am the editor of the "Marburger Ausgabe" and also the author of the german Wikipedia article about Strubberg. Marburg is about 50 miles south of Kassel and the state archive of the former Landgrafschaft Hessen-Kassel is located here. I am writing my doctoral dissertation about Strubberg and therefore try to evaluate every source regarding Strubberg's life and works (and that is less enough...). Ironically the most important documents are not located in Texas or in Germany, but in the Beinecke Rare Manuscript Library of the Yale University: The Archives of the Adelsverein (which were sold from the Solms-Braunfels family archives to an unknowm buyer in the US in the late 1960s) and the so-called "Strubberg Collection", which contains letters and other documents regarding Strubberg. These documents were originally part of the Solms-Braunfels Archives and were ripped out from the original volumes, probably in the early/mid 1960s. Transcripts of the Solms-Braunfels Archives were made in the 1920s and are located in the Center for American History, University of Texas (James Kearney used these transcripts for his book about the Nassau Plantation). Irene Marshall King's work about Meusebach is - at least regarding Strubberg - not objective, because he was Meusebach's most bitter opponent, and Marschall King was Meusebach's granddaughter. This or next year (depends on getting a scholarship to pay the flight costs) I will go to Yale and do my research on the originals.FAStrubberg (talk) 13:56, 28 January 2012 (UTC)FAStrubberg
- I'm impressed. I have worked on some articles for the English Wikipedia about the German people who came to Texas during that period. This is my creations by category list I've been keeping. This is the first time I've had input. Welcome input, I might add. For me, it's been like looking for a needle in a haystack., but I find the emigration such a fascinating story on the whole. There is seemingly no end to the interesting people who were involved in that. Unveil a story about one individual, place, or building - and more interesting aspects pop up. The story and its people would make a great epic movie. I understand what you are saying about Irene Marshall King. I believe her book is based on his personal papers, perhaps on family oral history, too. Of course, his papers would be telling his perspective of the people and events. Please, make any edits you deem necessary to the Strubberg article. Maile66 (talk) 14:21, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
WikiProject Texas
I am going to go ahead and replace the articles for the inactive Texas related projects (like A&M) with the WPUS/applicable Texas banner over the weekend. I'm not going to do Texas yet but let me know when you think we can go ahead. --Kumioko (talk) 01:55, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

- Sounds good thanks. It will probably take the bot a couple days to do the conversion but once its done I will start adding the additional articles here and here. That will also likely take a few days to complete. --Kumioko (talk) 02:51, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
WikiProject Texas
I just wanted to let you know that my bot got stopped and the previously approved tasks revoked due to a couple users having issue with the scope of WPUS and the articles I was tagging. There are about 6000 articles left for WPUS to convert but I don't have the time to do them all by hand. I will submit a request to have someone else do it but I wanted to let you know the status. --Kumioko (talk) 21:31, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. All I can do is make sure the articles I created have the right tag. Maile66 (talk) 21:37, 14 February 2012

- Hey Maile, sorry about the big show of late. I just wanted to let you know that I am basically walking away from WPUS and moving to other things if I even continue editing at all. Sorry for the bad timing of all this with the Texas project. There are still about 6000 that still need to be converted and still those to lists in my namespace that need to be added (to start) although someone should probably give it a once over to see if there are any that shouldn't be there. Not to sound arrogant or stuck up but I expect that the WPUS project to collapse without someone doing the upkeep so it might be better to back them out into the WPTexas project again. Its up to you though and again sorry for all the trouble and bad timeing of things. I woudl go ahead and finish this one run but my bot is shut down so I can't do any of it. Anomie might be able to do it. Good luck and happy editing. --Kumioko (talk) 19:38, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Robert E. Howard Museum
On 17 February 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Robert E. Howard Museum, which you created or substantially expanded. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert E. Howard Museum. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Texas museums
I really think you've oversplit them. The idea is to make as comprehensive lists as possible all in one place and its inconvient to have to browse that many pages to view them all. Now there is a great deal more to manage. Please consider moving to sub regions of Texas.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:13, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- That's what I've been doing the last two days. I, too, felt they were over split. I've been merging. I think the ideal is the five different sub regions. Maybe some of the cities like DFW should remain separate, because of the amount of museums. Thanks for your input.Maile66 (talk) 20:17, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Zaragoza statue pictures
Late reply here to a question you asked on my talk page. Carcharoth (talk) 22:03, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- I know you might not want to look at it again, but I did reply on my talk page to what you said. There are some concerns over freedom of panorama for modern statues and sculptures in the USA, so those could be raised on Commons at some point. I may do that when I get a moment, but thought it best to let you know as well, as not everyone is aware of freedom of panorama issues over statues (I don't agree with it, myself, but lots of pictures like that get deleted on Commons if the dates of erection and of the sculptors are too recent). Dead link - List of museums in North Texas
I saw that you did some amazing work on the List of museums in North Texas page today. But I noticed the page because it showed up on the list of new dead links. The link that is dead is the first information link for the Pate Museum of Transportation - the one that goes to traveltex. I looked all over traveltex and couldn't find the museum listed and so I'm not sure if it is best to just delete the link (usually I wouldn't do that and instead would want to find a new one). I thought I'd let you know and maybe you could take care of it?
Tdferro (talk) 02:13, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. I did a search on Texas.gov, which almost always pulls up Traveltex as one link on any search. It didn't this time, so I'm thinking the museum is no longer open. I deleted the dead link. Those museums have been out there for years and years, so I'm still trying to weed through what is valid. Thanks for your help.Maile66 (talk) 02:32, 20 February 2012 (UTC)]

Carbajal Family
Hello, my name is Jonathan Carbajal and I love the work you did in the Jose Maria Carbajal Wiki page. I've always been curious about my family history, but never been able to delve too deeply into it. May I ask where you got all your information from and where I could get any more info on my family?
Thanks a bunch!! Jon carb (talk) 21:24, 20 April 2012 (UTC) Jon_carb
- Hello, Jonathan. Everything I used for a reference is found at the bottom "Notes" and "References" sections on José María Jesús Carbajal. The book written by Joseph E. Chance can be found in many libraries, or through Amazon Here.Wikipedia has a neat feature that should help you. Go down to the references section on the article, and double click on the ISBN number of any book. That will take you to a Wikipedia page that can assist you in finding the book anywhere in the world. That's a start. If you are able, you might want to do some search around Victoria, Texas, because your ancestor was part of the De Leon family there and actually platted the town of Victoria (De León's Colony). Since he was born in San Antonio and was mentored by Stephen F. Austin, you might find some information in that direction. Good luck.Maile66 (talk) 21:50, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Re: Tanager Expedition
Hi, is there any reason you are removing red links? Viriditas (talk) 20:10, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hui Mālama is no longer a red link, but redirects to the Tanager Expedition, that particullar section. Wouldn't leaving the link there be a bit redundant? If you feel either the redirect or the removal of the link within Tanager Expedition was wrong, please do what you feel is correct. Maile66 (talk) 20:17, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware of the redirect you created. I don't think the Tanager expedition has anything to do with the group so it doesn't really follow the topic, which has more to do with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. The repatriation subtopic is somewhat tangential. I will leave it for now and find out if we can create a new stub about the group instead or find a better target for the redirect. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 04:15, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok. Understood. I'll leave it up to you. Thanks for catching this. And just an an FYI you might want to know. I also created redirects for Ka Lahui Hawaii and Poka Laenui (Hayden Burgess) as placeholders of sort. I know these two should probably have their own articles, but I couldn't find enough on them to do that. The placeholder gives a potential editor some scant information on what and who these are. But please go ahead and convert them to stubs if you have any info that can do this. I left all three of these as listings on the project's Article requests Maile66 (talk) 12:48, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Those redirects are fine and appropriate, and I'm glad that you pointed them out, as I was thinking that the solution was to redirect Hui Mālama to Hawaiian sovereignty movement after adding a paragraph. What do you think? Viriditas (talk) 13:01, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that's a really good idea. What I was doing when this happened, was trying to alphabetize and notate on the article request page. And I realized while I was doing it, that potential editors who are not currently located within the state of Hawaii, might have a hard time doing research on something with a Hawaiian name if they don't know the subject matter. So, that's

Women's history stubs
What is the end goal? It may be something I can help with. Rich Farmbrough, 00:00, 9 May 2012 (UTC).
- Hooray! The history stub was not my goal. That was suggested by another editor as a means to help Tedderbot identify new articles. See this WikiProject Hawaii/New articles page. This is what I was hoping could be set up for the WikiProject Women's History. That's all I ever wanted, because it helps that project monitor how active it is. Tedder can't set up his bot without search terms. Nobody has been able to come up with search terms. The history stub was merely suggested as part of the process. I actually have no interest in the stubs by themselves. I just want the New Articles page. Maile66 (talk) 00:07, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Kawaiahaʻo Church pastors
I've been working on the list of Kahus (pastors) at Kawaiahaʻo Church. It looks like you put the original list on the page Sept 2011. Just want to verify your source on the years of service for Kamau and Kahele. I find no sourcing (yet) on William Kamau. However, for Edward Kahale, I think he might have also served there in a different capacity before becoming Kahu, based on this 1922 report from the Hawaiian Evangelical Assn, and this Edward Frances Kahale Sr. at Find a Grave, which cannot possibly be him. U.S. state of Texas
Thanks for the compliment! I write such descriptions in two ways:
- (Cityname or Countyname), Texas, United States — when there's just one
- (Citynames or Countynames) in the U.S. state of Texas — when there are two or more
This is simply because "the cities of A and B, Texas, United States" and "A and B Counties, Texas, United States" sound very awkward to me, but I prefer "Placename, Texas, United States" because "Placename, Texas" is the more common usage and because it's much smoother to append "United States" to the end of such a statement. However, I don't remember ever seeing a policy, guideline, or essay precisely on the subject. We have a page that says to provide context for international readers by telling the name of the country (but I can't remember what it's called), and WP:UNDERLINK says that we should provide links to "relevant connections to the subject of another article that will help readers understand the article more fully" — the USA or US state, Texas, and the city and county are all these, so all should be linked. As a result, the edit you reverted simply isn't as helpful (especially since "United States" is better than "USA", or why else would our article be at United States) as the form that you prefer. Re: Suggestions
Regarding this suggestion, have you received any feedback? I think it is a fine idea, and you should know, it is an idea that that has been previously published in at least two forms:
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-05-02/Dispatches (focus on process)
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2010-09-06/Dispatches (focus on tools)
To summarize your request, you've said that would like to see the following in your article:
- DYK as a learning tool to writing/improving articles
- Difficult to learn from just reading MOS
- Can help new and seasoned editors alike sharpen their skills
I really like your idea of "DYK as a teaching aid" and I would like to see you publish this idea as a Special Report in The Signpost. What I'm going to suggest is that based on your recent experience on DYK, that you research and write this article yourself as a "Special Report" and propose it for publication. I would recommend reading the dispatch from 2008 and the tool review from 2010 I linked above and taking a different approach. I would recommend working closely with two consulting members of the project to do this, a seasoned DYK admin who you can rely on for good info and a leading editor/writer from The Signpost. Viriditas (talk) 21:40, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
- Let me think about this and get back to you. I've gotten no feedback on the suggestion, except from you. At the time I wrote it, I had mostly just had my articles submitted to DYK. Since then, I've gotten involved in the submission of others' articles, and the reviewing process. It's the best learning process I've found on Wikipedia. I can probably decide for myself whom to approach at DYK as consulting. Do you have suggestions who at Signpost would be good for that? Maile66 (talk) 21:46, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
- There's no reason to get back to me. DYK is one of the better learning processes on Wikipedia (but not the "best" IMO) and I think it would be timely and informative for you to pursue a Special Report on this subject. The fact that you didn't receive any feedback on your suggestion doesn't indicate anything. In my experience, good ideas on Wikipedia get little feedback. It looks like the DYK coverage is considered part of a series, so this may not be covered as a Special Report. Either way, it occurs to me, that you may also want to coordinate with GA and FA admins as well. I don't know who would be a good person to contact at The Signpost, but you could leave a message at User talk:The ed17 and see what he says. You might have more success if you present him with a brief outline/summary (in your user space) and "pitch" him a story. That way he can say yay or nay right then and there. On the above DYK nom, you wrote that stubs aren't eligible, but the article (at 11,000 plus bytes and 20 plus sources) isn't a stub. Could you clarify? Cbl62 (talk) 21:46, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- Done, once you removed the stub assessment. I didn't assess it as a stub. It was assessed like that when it was listed on DYK. Maile66 (talk) 21:51, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi Maile66, I do not tend to assess articles I'm heavily involved in. It is clearly not a stub and has already been re-assessed by another editor. Link to nom. —Ynhockey (Talk) 23:46, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: Infoboxes
- You've been in circles I haven't, Matthew Townsend. I wasn't aware of these people who dislike infoboxes. I must have missed some interesting conversations.
Don't quote me on this, but I believe the dislike of infoboxes stems from several different WikiProjects with the additional support of active editors involved in the FAC process. If you look hard enough, you'll notice that several topics tend not to have infoboxes, and several editors tend to be very vocal about disliking them. However, there are potential uses for infoboxes that Wikipedia has not yet embraced. Viriditas (talk) 03:45, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the insight. Not having been involved in such discussions, it's interesting to know where it came from. My perspective is a lot more simple. In today's text-message culture, people want things fast and brief. Let's say you're a staff worker on a news broadcast, and you have limited time to come up with some information. That's the value of the infobox - it tells you if this is where you need to read further, or move on to another search. And regardless of what a lead is supposed to do, many times it just becomes another mass of text to read through. I bypass a lot on Wikipedia, because a mass of text on a page, with no short eye catching recap, will not get my attention. Tomato, tomahto. Maile66 (talk) 11:49, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- I agree! As you are probably already aware, Google Search has started using this style. If you go to Google Search and log in (it won't work if you are logged out) and search for a person (as an example) you'll see a new interface and display. They call this Knowledge Graph. (more) Notice, it returns infobox-like results on the right hand side of the screen. There's also the Intelligence in Wikipedia project at the University of Washington[1] (and other projects like it) that discuss different ways of using infoboxes to extract information. Basically, the problem with infoboxes is how they appear on Wikipedia, not with how they are used. The editors who argue for their removal are really arguing about layout and design issues. The fact of the matter is, infoboxes might help us to one day write better articles and to deliver more accurate data to our readers. Viriditas (talk) 22:59, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- Google is marvelous. I did musician searches, and notice that the data in their right-hand infobox is Wikipedia's, complete with Discography and images. Google really shines on a search for Liliuokalani. However, since Wikipedia has no article on Emma Veary, Google has no right-hand box on her. Also, thanks for the other links. I read it all. Wouldn't it be great if Wikipedia had a collapsed version of Google's box, and a mouse roll over drops it down? I realize from a writer's point of view that the creative output is like a writer's child. The FA and GA are somewhat literary works of art. But the time is passing when anyone of any age has the attention span to sit down and read all that. Even the older generations have come up through a time when human brains are trained to multi-task, either from a work environment or just the culture around us. And with the continuing use of smartphones, how much text does anyone want to see at one time? Well, thanks for the education. Maile66 (talk) 01:25, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- No, thank you. You raise a number of interesting points that are considered touchstones of science fiction, but are in reality happening as we speak. The supplementation and augmentation of our natural memory began with oral cultures, who shared their knowledge and passed it down through the generations through poetry, song, and music. Using mnemonic devices to retain knowledge allows one to remember just about anything, and you've probably read or heard about the method of loci which makes this possible. Now, bear with me, and hold on for a minute: the use of computers, handheld devices, Google, Wikipedia, and now the cloud—to store our memories and any knowledge we want to access—has been discussed by people like Clive Thompson[2] and can be seen in practical terms as a real part of the lifelogging movement, sousveillance, and various fictional portrayals found in works like the The Light of Other Days, "Stream of Consciousness", The Machine Stops, and Asimov's planet of Gaia. As a result of our increasing use and dependence on technology in the hands of less than ethical interests, we are seeing the erosion of privacy and individualism; social networking, a/v technology embedded in small everyday objects recording everything about us, location aware devices knowing where we are and exactly what we are doing (making purchases, driving, walking, talking, etc.), combined with our obsessive use of these technologies to make choices, retrieve information, and make decisions, is changing the way people interact with each other. The end result of this kind of path is a centralized knowledge base that distributes information without valuing the individual, and without, as you have already observed above, individuals who have the ability to think and use that information to their benefit. So, the fundamental question for me is, what is the purpose of Wikipedia and how can we best deliver on its purpose such that we can augment and uplift the human mind rather than degrade it? The end result of this might not be pretty (see "Stream of Consciousness") but we have the choice to create the future rather than allow it to control us. Towards that end, I believe we can use infoboxes constructively, and combined with some of the applications listed above, I think they can benefit our users. Viriditas (talk) 05:41, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
- And then there was the Zager and Evans vision. I'm sure there are people that agree the sci-fi writers, and their fans, are the visionaries and prophets who believe in "what if...." I still hold out hope that Ray Bradbury was right about Mars, and that NASA just hasn't looked in the right place. But, yes, when you think about where our communication methods are today, it was previously envisioned in a book, movie or television show. Maybe Wikipedia could go to a sci-fi convention and recruit 14-year-olds to create its future. Didn't Bill Gates build his first computer at 14?Maile66 (talk) 16:08, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Please comment on DYK prep area issue
Hi. As an active participant in DYK discussion, if you have a minute, can you drop by Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Number of Olympic hooks per day? and offer an opinion on how to address this? I'd rather get it dealt with sooner rather than later as I feel like the sheer volume will require a discussion as all people involved in building prep areas will need to be aware of whatever decision is reached. --LauraHale (talk) 21:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Alaska Women's Hall of Fame article
Thanks for the earlier regards. I'll try and finish the rest of what I had to do on that article shortly. I think I can dig up a few third-party sources while I'm at it. Right now, I'm trying to get a few things taken care of before I walk out the door.
I read yesterday of the death of Mary Louise Rasmuson in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. They said that she was 101 years old, so the birth year is incorrect. I'm pretty sure the birth and death years for Martha Roderick and Jo Ryman Scott are also incorrect.RadioKAOS (talk) 22:46, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- You'll get no argument from me on the accuracy issue. AGF it's not intentional, but it puts doubt on info listed for all entries. Maile66 (talk) 22:55, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Mobile Clinic

Leonie von Meusebach–Zesch
Hi Maile66. I went ahead and contacted the Leonie book publishers for more details on that photograph and got a response from Ms. Payne. It seems that the photograph was from May 1902, a month before she graduated. She inquired about how you heard about Leonie and became sufficiently interested to write an article on her. She also mentioned the Wikipedia article to Jane Troutman (Leonie's niece), who was interested in reading it. I left her your username and a link to your user page. Thank you for your help with my DYKnom Sally Tanner! I also copied some of your helpful information from your DYK page and organized myself a DYK reference page based on yours. I have only one question... I cannot seem to find the "Template" pages for the two earliest DYKs that were nominated and I was wondering if you could show me what I am doing wrong by following the format "Template:Article Name" ? Thank you so much !! Ellin Beltz (talk) 19:07, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
- You flatter me. I'm looking at your DYK reference page. I couldn't find templates for my own earlier DYK nominations, either. I've only been doing the reviews for the last six months or so. I think they only created that template about a year ago, and operated with something else before. Might be an interesting question for you to pose over at Wikipedia talk:Did you know. I started getting active in reviewing, because it helps me learn basics when I create my own article. Six months ago, I felt "all thumbs" just trying to get it straight how to nominate an article. Cabinets
Regarding this edit, I was hopping to avoid links to generic articles like "Government of [State X]." Are all of the members of that list considered cabinet-level? Savidan 20:59, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
- Beats me. I didn't make the list. Texas is a rather dead project, so I would be surprised if you got any volunteers on that state to do anything. The persons who did the original Texas government articles are just about not even with Wikipedia anymore. You're the first person I've ever heard refer to a state-level agency as a cabinet. Could your terminology be regional to wherever you are? I've lived in numerous states, and not once do I recall the term "cabinet" refer to anything on a state level. But I was just getting ready to contact you about the below listed template I found. Does this duplicate what you just created, or should it be combined?Maile66 (talk) 21:06, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
- The templates are not duplicates. Agencies is much broader than cabinet. In nearly all states, the state constitution defines certain high-level executive offices, often explicitly as the "cabinet." Several smaller agencies may be under the aegis of a cabinet-level person. While creating the template, I found many articles that described a certain state officer as "cabinet-level." - Hey Maile, I made the changes you suggested and tweaked the hook. The problem is I think theremins are the bees knees, but I get the sense that most people don't care, so I've tried to make the hook a little more broad in its appeal. If you could take a look and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Braincricket (talk) 05:25, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've reformatted the hooks in accordance with DYK. Don't strike out old hooks. Just do "Alt 1", Alt 2", etc. And by the time we get to the end, you agree on which one you want, so the promoter knows. At this point, I believe it is Alt 2 you are agreeing on. I am avoiding writing any of the hook myself, because if I write it, somebody else has to do the review. And that throws it back into whether or not the reviewer will automatically reject it because of the date. More suggestions on the template. Maile66 (talk) 11:34, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I've settled on a hook and an alt. I'll let the promoter decide which one they want to use, if that's alright. I'll go over the DYK guidelines and make sure the hooks are properly sourced. Let's get this party started. Braincricket (talk) 19:31, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey, sorry if we got off on the wrong foot. I take it you're one of the "we" to which Viriditas referred in recent comment on my Talk page? I guess I missed the first comment. Anyways, I'm not interested in unnecessarily animated edit disputes, but I did want to give you a heads-up that your recent edits on lanai (disambiguation) actually go against guidelines on Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages, Wikipedia:Disambiguation, and Wikipedia:Wikimedia sister projects, at least as I've come to understand them. As you may be aware, disambiguation pages are a little particular in their format. I'm not in a rush to challenge your edits, but you might want to take a minute to check out the dab-related guidelines as you go forward. ENeville (talk) 00:29, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm happy to try and transfer the account, but it will be more difficult than with Dr.Blofeld as he transferred his before they went out. Our Credo contact just changed jobs and the role she was playing has not been filled. Given that you've already addressed some issues here, I was hoping you could take on the others. Thanks either way. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:36, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm gonna take care of it. It just might be tomorrow before I have the chance. Arius doesn't even really check length. I've noticed several of their, "it looks about....." whatever, with no specified character count. Don't worry. I'll do this one. Maile66 (talk) 14:43, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Yes, I've noticed: Arius's QPQ reviews have been a problem, and I've cleaned up many of them over the past week or so. (It's my fault: I'm the one who noticed they were owed.) BlueMoonset (talk) 16:02, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
RfC?
How about I shove this here and you either make it better or have someone else do so? I looked at the guidelines and it still seems a bit legal for my skill set ... I have modified 1–3 to refer to all Gibraltar-related hooks, since that seemed to be the intent of those participating in the thread, but it might also be advisable to give people the explicit option of distinguishing Gibraltarpedia hooks from other Gibraltar hooks.
RFC on Gibraltar-related Did You Know submissions
In view of the current controversy surrounding articles submitted to Did You Know that relate to Gibraltar, a temporary moratorium has been placed on acceptance of such articles for Did You Know, those that had already been accepted and were in Preparation areas or Queues to appear on the Main Page have been withdrawn and replaced, and a special holding area has been created for those nominations. One article was pulled from the Did You Know section of the Main Page.
The following four proposals have been made for what the Did You Know project should now do. Which should the project adopt?
- Until the project decides otherwise, the moratorium on Gibraltar-related submissions should continue, with new submissions of Gibraltar-related articles being rejected and those previously submitted held in the special holding area.
- Until the project decides otherwise, new submissions of Gibraltar-related articles should be rejected; however, those already submitted should be evaluated in the normal manner.
- The project should resume featuring Gibraltar-related articles that have been accepted and should not exclude future such nominations, but spread out the Gibraltar articles as it usually does when there are multiple articles on related topics.
- The project should resume featuring Gibraltar-related articles and should not exclude future such nominations, but until the project decides otherwise, Gibraltar-related articles may not be reviewed by Victuallers (or alternatively, not by any member of the Gibraltarpedia project), and all submissions of Gibraltar-related articles must receive a second careful review before being moved to a Prep area.
Yngvadottir (talk) 20:00, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- Has the project decided that the moratorium means a rejection of all new nominations? I had thought, perhaps mistakenly, that all submissions were being sequestered in the holding area, but not that additional submissions were set to get the automatic orange X and a rejection. I think the latter is a bit draconic, given that we don't have any consensus that I've seen; I also think that's a problem with the first two selections: the outright rejection of new paired with different outcomes for the others. Where's the possibility that just says that until the project decides otherwise, all Gibraltar-related articles will be held?
- I realize we don't want to get into huge numbers of possibilities, but there seem to be some basic decision points:
- Already submitted/reviewed articles: held or processed.
- New articles: held, processed, or refused/rejected
- Review methodology: regular single or also with second careful review by experienced, non-COI DYK reviewer
- First (only?) reviewers: everyone or exclude COI (Victuallers or all Gibraltarpedia)
- I'm honestly not sure why "but spread out the Gibraltar articles as it usually does when there are multiple articles on related topics" is in there, because I thought we were doing that. There have been a lot, true, but I'm seeing almost as many Syria, lots of horses, etc. We could limit to one per day, I suppose, but it's awkward to limit to one here when we're sometimes putting through a couple of Syria or horses in a day. Still, given the furor, a hard limit may be wise for the Gibraltar articles. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:48, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- I've put Maile66 in an awkward position sticking this here, so we really shouldn't discuss the options ... but I was trying to state the 4 alternatives as they appeared to have been taken by those who discussed them at WT:DYK. I put in the "spread them out" because that's been part of the issue since Panyd's first post and tehre have been people saying things like "only one a day". As I understand it, an RfC is intended to invite participation from outside the usual group, so I wanted to offer an entrée to that issue and provide background on what we usually do under the "proceed as usual" option. (Now up late; hope that's clear.) Yngvadottir (talk) 21:00, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- If anyone were to ask my opinion, it's just "stick all submissions in the holding area, like the Olympics". End of story. But it's not my opinion that's going to carry the day on this. It occurs to me that excluding Victuallers might require a topic ban on some notice board. And it also occurs to me that anything decided needs to be communicated in writing on the Gibraltar project site. Believe me when I tell you that I have not been involved in conflict resolution from either side on Wikipedia. This is over my head.Maile66 (talk) 21:08, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- If no one else chimes in on the DYK discussion page with useful experience, I suggest posting this with a big fat statement in the edit summary that it's my draft. I openly said there that I'd dumped it here, and the need for an RfC has been mentioned multiple times. Folks can hash out wording in their discussion. But after I check there one more time I must go to bed, sorry! Yngvadottir (talk) 21:31, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- Couple of quick comments:
- I perceive the proposed item 3 as meaning "treat Gibraltar-related submissions the same way we treat other DYK submissions". I think that this is appropriate; "business as usual" should be an option. Could the item be worded more simply?
- Although there has been some discussion at WT:DYK about treating new/future submissions differently from already-submitted ones, I don't see the timing of submission as something that should radically affect "policy" on the handling of the nomination (I put "policy" in scare quotes because this isn't about official WP policy).
- I think that an RFC might result in some "none of the above" options being raised. For example, it seems to me that Gibraltar DYKs might need to be subject to some extra review criteria (not just extra reviewers, but also extra review considerations to make sure we're not being gamed). Another possible recommendation might be to arbitrarily limit the number of Gibraltar hooks per day/week/month -- of course, we'd need some rules on how to decide which ones to accept.
- I would hope that a restriction on Victuallers' DYK activity could be agreed upon and effected (if such is desired) without going to some Wikipedia-wide noticeboard. DYK is a rather well-defined and well-contained area of activity. If there is a desire to restrict him from writing articles about Gibraltar, that's a subject for some other discussion. --Orlady (talk) 22:09, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Brow Monument and Brow Monument Trail
Hi. I just saw your note regarding sourcing every section within the article. I'm making a guess, but I assume you are referring to the Brow Monument Trail information. I can cite the National Register nomination paperwork for this but, in total honesty, there is only the briefest mention of the location there. I guess, to some extent, the description of the trail, the pictures of the information signs, the pictures of the waymark posts and the pictures of the monument plaque itself are original to me. The manager of the National Forest Service office at Jacob Lake and the people at the National Park office in Grand Canyon (north) told me that i was the first person to ever go out there (that they knew of) and the first person to document it. Like I said, I could cite the Nomination because there is a little bit of information about it there. if you have any thoughts, i'm more than glad to work with them. bill polkAbearfellow (talk) 00:05, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

DYK question
Hey Maile66. I'd like to nominate C/2012 S1 for DYK, which I put a little work into the other day. I was the main/sole contributor for my previous two articles, but C/2012 S1 has a few other editors who are actively working on it right now. Should I go ahead and nominate it and come up with a hook on my own, or should I give the other editors a chance to contribute alternate hooks as well? I'm not familiar with DYK etiquette. What is the polite thing to do? Thanks. Braincricket (talk) 02:18, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
- Nominate it yourself. You only have another day in that "five days old when nominated" rule, so you don't want to take a chance on waiting for anyone else. The nominator creates the hook. Others can add alternative hooks later if they wish. I would say you and Kheider are the authors, as far as filling out the template. The others contributed but not significantly, so that's up to you. But you pick the hook if you nominate it. If you like, you could put a copy of the template on Kheider's talk page once you nominate. To do that, you drop it on the talk page just like you add it to the DYK nomination page, with {{Did you know nominations/article name}}. If you want the other editors to be aware of the nomination, I would suggest putting a copy of the template on the article's talk page. Maile66 (talk) 11:42, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Resuming DYK review
The issues you found with the Chicago Teachers Union nomination have been addressed, and I was wondering whether you'd be interested in revisiting your review to see whether they were addressed to your satisfaction. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:11, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I'm concerned, the issues I raised are not addressed. That aside, this nom needs specialized attention from someone familiar with labor unions and Chicago politics. There could POVs all throughout this thing, and I wouldn't pick up on it. Maile66 (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Chicago Teachers Union
Thanks for the compliment. :) I saw the message on the WP:DYK talk page and felt qualified enough to review it, though erk. :( The article isn't perfect but I think it works well enough. (There are some things that have to be remembered with Chicago, like it was the home to the labour movement in the USA for a long time, that it remains one of the last major bastions in the USA for the labour movement, that the labour movement has been violent and militant at times, that Chicago machine politics are... there and very real. But yeah, I did/do read the text of articles I review. :) Thought I would highlight as much as I was reading and responding to as possible so if some one had issues, they could explain them in a narrower context to disagree. *babbles* If I have time and there are reviews needing to be done, just ping me and if I have the time, will do it. Did four other reviews today to try to get more ready for the queue but only one passed. :( --LauraHale (talk) 22:56, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, kiddo. I felt so in over my head when I really began to read that article. Maile66 (talk) 23:01, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- I think the article is probably written at a higher level than some articles. It looks a lot more like an article headed towards WP:GAN than most DYKs. And specialised knowledge articles are PITA. I have completely screwed up one or two reviews by not knowing the subject area. (One of Tony's poker hooks is a classic example.) The alt hook I referenced was found some where near the top. I found it already there and reviewed using it since I think the original hook was struck. --LauraHale (talk) 23:39, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- When I started doing reviews, you as a second reviewer, caught some stuff I missed, because I didn't know what I was doing. I don't even remember what the review was. I'm more comfortable with architecture, geography, biographies of any field, probably anything Cwmhiraeth does. As long as the citations have online links. I'm still a little insecure about accepting citations in a language other than English. But when it comes to Chicago politics, I know Bin Laden got "Chicago justice". When Bin Laden was killed, all I could think of was that clip from the Untouchables, Sean Connery saying, "They kill one of yours. You send one of theirs to the morgue. That's the Chicago way."Maile66 (talk) 23:49, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- I tend to look at the criteria, tick off everything as I go. I list it to I know I checked it. It just seems easier. I dislike stepping in to other people's reviews. Reviewing is PITA because if you screw up, everyone blames the reviewer (or the mover or the writer) and it is very discouraging.--LauraHale (talk) 00:08, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

You participated earlier in Wikipedia talk:Did you know/GibraltarPediA Options, in which a proposed moratorium on Gibraltar-related DYKs was rejected and a set of options was agreed. Good articles on the main page
Hi. I was wondering about your proposal for GAs on the main page, which I'm opposed to right now. Would you be wanting one good article blurb (similar to the Featured Article blurb) or something more akin to DYK but with interesting or notable facts about article subjects? I'd think the latter would be more interesting, if indeed the proposal goes through (I think it probably will). It would also not detract too much attention from the featured article blurb. dci | TALK 16:26, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Texas/San Antonio
I too noticed the issue you mention. I believe the markers currently showing up in China correspond to the coordinates which had negative longitudes (IADT and Brennan High) at the time I added the GeoGroup template. For some reason, the KML data hasn't been updated since I corrected those longitudes. I suspect the update is a "background" task caught up in the current Help:Job queue backlog. If so, the issue should correct itself eventually. If it bothers you, I'd be happy to remove the GeoGroup template or spend some more time attempting to correct the issue.
By the way, my grandfather grew up in San Antonio, so I feel connected to the place despite the fact that I've never been there. Best wishes, —Stepheng3 (talk) 20:59, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
- Let the coord issue wait for the Job Queue to clear its backlog. Nobody else but you and me is going to notice it for a long time, anyway. In many ways, San Antonio is more culturally connected to the diverse roots of Texas than any other singular location in the state. Just my biased opinion there. — Maile (talk) 21:19, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
