Administrators' newsletter – October 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Rathish/Ratheesh Ambat

Today you closed this AfD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ratheesh Ambat. The "keep" result is valid but you apparently did not read the entire discussion. Keeping the article requires a page move by an Admin, because of an old block on the subject's true name. Read the nomination and the following comment. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 14:45, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Apologies for missing that. I see another admin fixed the title. MBisanz talk 21:14, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Aish Divine

Hi you closed this AfD: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Aish_Divine. The page actually meets both WP:MUSICBIO and WP:SIGCOV guidelines, has more than 20 references in publications such as Rolling Stone, Vice etc which are independent 3rd party mainstream global publications. None of the delete votes cited the Wiki criteria for notoriety correctly. Please advise exactly how this article doesn't meet the wiki criteria and I'll be happy to update. Thank you.Teagleman (talk) 13:32, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but the commenters involved in the discussion felt that those references did not satisfy the cited standards. I would suggest you bring the matter to WP:DRV if you would like to restore the article. MBisanz talk 20:33, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Benvanshi

Hi, should the delete be overturned as both the nominator and participant have been blocked as sockpuppets? regards, Atlantic306 (talk) 01:34, 30 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi. I came here regarding the same.
  1. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Venuvanshi
  2. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Benvanshi
The same nominator and the other same sole participant turned out to be socks (not related it seems). Are you open to consider undeleting and/or re-opening AfD/second nomination for further participation? I am unaware of both the subjects and have no idea what they even are. — DaxServer (talk) 14:11, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
I have reverted and relisted those articles for further participation. MBisanz talk 20:34, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for relisting them, regards Atlantic306 (talk) 23:35, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

AFD closure

Hello, there, MBisanz,

It looks like there are some associated pages in the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of book-based war films (wars before 1775) nomination that weren't automatically deleted when you closed this discussion. Thought I'd give you a head's up. Liz Read! Talk! 04:28, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

regard Dellwoods close

Hi MBisanz. So, not exactly a big complaint, but regarding your close at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Dellwoods, I mean it was a contentious and contended AfD, but you did a four word close, which kind of leaves us hanging as to what factors you considered and how. I don't personally agree with the close, but it's not a big deal (as a merge the material is retained), and of course it's not a Deletion Review case or anything, but still, I wish I knew more. I'm not asking for more now or anything, but, while four-word closes are fine for slam-dunks, I wish contended AfDs had more detailed closes. Just saying. Cheers, Herostratus (talk) 20:30, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Noted and appreciate the feedback. MBisanz talk 00:19, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Removal of Broadside Electric

What happened to the Broadside Electric page? It looks like it has been deleted, and now other orphaned content is being deleted as a result.

I did see one comment elsewhere in a deletion discussion that mentioned the band isn't noteable. About all I can offer in response is this link to a number of mentions elsewhere on Wikipedia. Various songs by them are considered notable in the folk music community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdandrea (talkcontribs) 21:16, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

The deletion discussion is explained at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Broadside Electric (2nd nomination). You will need to find sources outside of Wikipedia. MBisanz talk 00:20, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Hey MBisanz, I just noticed your close of Coat of arms of Christmas Island, and I don't think it matches consensus. Out of four participants, only one supported retargeting to Flag of Christmas Island#Creation, and that !vote was admittedly "weak". On the other hand, two participants (myself and Hut 8.5) noted consideration of Flag of Christmas Island, but were opposed to it. Two participants explicitly wanted deletion, and I am also not opposed to deletion myself, so consensus should be "delete". -- Tavix (talk) 02:49, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

I read your comment as supporting retention somewhere and Hut's as admitting that the Flag article had somewhat relevant content. The Flag article close seemed preferable to a no consensus outcome. MBisanz talk 00:22, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
That's a fundamental misunderstanding of both Hut's comments and my own. If Hut was supporting a retarget to the Flag article, they would have had a !vote of retarget, not delete. Hut states why in the second sentence: the Flag article does not give enough details. I also made clear in my comment that I do not support retargeting to a "failed proposal" (which was my characterization of the Flag article, which may be a bit hasty in retrospect), nor do I support retargeting anywhere else that does not have any information on the coat of arms. I guess I could have made it more clear that the only options remaining would be 1) Armorial of dependent territories#External territories (since removed) and 2) deletion, but I fully expected someone to comment behind me to clarify whether or not the "failed proposal" was the same as the coat of arms that was depicted at Armorial of dependent territories#External territories. Do you see how that gets to a deletion consensus, or should I take it to DRV? -- Tavix (talk) 02:14, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
I will reopen it because you know your own thoughts better than I do, but I could see someone else closing it in the same way because you say "we ought to have information somewhere to sustain the redirect." A redirect cannot point to nothing, so a comment like that leaves the closer trying to find somewhere to point at. Regards, MBisanz talk 04:15, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Lucas and Taft

Hi, could you change your closing statement at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lucas, British Columbia to reflect that the result for Lucas was 'delete', the result for Taft was 'keep'? That was evidently the outcome but your statement makes it seem like they were both deleted. Lennart97 (talk) 10:01, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Also, when closing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Race Against Time (novel series) you missed the following redirects: Journey to Atlantis (1985 novel), Evil in paradise and Escape from raven castle. Lennart97 (talk) 10:14, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Fixed. MBisanz talk 20:06, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

As I see, the FFD discussion was closed as "no consensus", defaulting to keeping the sample in three articles. Is it the right decision? --George Ho (talk) 21:21, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

It at least should remain in the song article. The other two are subject to editorial discretion. MBisanz talk 02:09, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Grind_(board_game)

Hi, Would you mind undoing the closure at [1] and allowing a longer discussion? The only delete !vote came just hours before the closure and I pretty strongly disagree with some of the reasoning in that !vote. In particular, being a non-profit site has nothing to do with reliability and the site in question appears to have strong editorial control. Not saying that this is a clearly wrong !vote, merely that there should be some time to discuss it. Thanks. Hobit (talk) 04:40, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

I have reverted, but still believe it is a deletion outcome. There was plenty of time to discuss and PMC appears to have been unconvinced by the changes made during the discussion. MBisanz talk 01:11, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. You may well be right, but I think PMC's arguments are flawed. Worth further discussion IMO. Hobit (talk) 13:19, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Samples of two Soundgarden songs

As I see, you closed two FFD discussions on File:Hands All Over (Soundgarden song - sample).ogg and File:Jesus Christ Pose (Soundgarden song - sample).ogg as "kept". Should the conclusion have been kept in their respective song articles and removed from all others, or must I be bold and do what was suggested there? George Ho (talk) 02:08, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

The conclusions were intended to include the removal from the other articles. Thanks. MBisanz talk 01:12, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Not according to rationales in this one and that one, both closed as "kept" and nothing else. Also, the files have redirects still used in the articles. --George Ho (talk) 02:03, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
I adjusted the close rationales. MBisanz talk 00:56, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Now what to do about the now-unused redirect pages, file:JesusChristPose.OGG and File:HandsAllOver.OGG? I did suggest deleting those at FFD discussions. George Ho (talk) 01:18, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Recreation of Kylie Cantrall redirect

Yesterday, 24 February, you concluded my RfD to delete the redirect "Kylie Cantrall" as a delete. This page appears to have been recreated: Kylie Cantrall. Embarrassingly I placed a speedy-delete template not knowing I needed to be administrator, which I self-reverted. However I'd like you to consider taking action on this matter. I'm a bit miffed I have to bring this up at all, it's not something I'd consider consequential enough to take to the global admin noticeboard for example, but it is unusual and ought to be flagged up. JAYFAX (talk) 18:14, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Giurtelecu Şimleului

Hi! Do you think you might be able to reopen this RfD? I had just been looking at it and was about to comment when you closed it. Also, I'm a bit perplexed by the close itself: nobody that I can see was arguing for keeping all of the redirects, and the one explicit "keep" was based on an argument (potential for an article) that at RfD is more commonly used to justify deletion per WP:REDLINK. There was only one other comment that wasn't completely supportive of the nomination, but that editor still said they'd be fine with the deletion of most of them, and the nominator's argument (that the redirects don't help searches) hasn't been countered by anyone. – Uanfala (talk) 01:50, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Seconded. A "no censensus" closure without further commentary or guidance is not helpful here. -- Tavix (talk) 02:19, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Some of your RFD closes raise questions, MBisanz, in a couple cases editors wanted the redirect changed to a different target, not deleted. Having looked over today's RFD page yesterday, I was surprised to see some of these redirects deleted considering comments people had made during the deletion discussion. Liz Read! Talk! 02:20, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
I reopened the RFD that Uanfala flagged, although I am skeptical it will change further given the low, brief, and vague participation. I saw Jay's point that he would be fine with the deletion of many of them, but his comment that "others need to be looked at individually" makes it difficult to identify a clear consensus for each item.
Liz, I am happy to revisit any closes you are concerned with, but in at least of those cases, I saw conflicting desires for retargeting and a clearer consensus toward deletion. MBisanz talk 01:22, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
And you deleted dozens of talk pages, and only the talk pages, apparently, as part of Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 February 6#Giurtelecu Şimleului Jewish Cemetery? Even though this discussion is still open and hasn't been closed? Or did you close this discussion and then revert yourself? This is all just rather odd. And that's coming from me! Stay well. Liz Read! Talk! 02:20, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
I closed the discussion and then reopened it. I thought I made sure all of the pages were undeleted, but maybe it was only the talk pages. It is academic now that someone else has closed as "delete." MBisanz talk 01:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
I'll go through the 5 non-Giurtelecu Şimleului redirects and update my vote. Jay (talk) 03:12, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

North-South divide in Scotland

Hello Matthew, can you write the closure report for WP:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 March 15#North-South divide in Scotland? Jay (talk) 05:58, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

That's a surprising close. The editor who proposed retargeting to the dab page suggested a change to that page; without such a change, this outcome looks like a worse version of the status quo. And if the change does get made, then it's unlikely to stay as it would be against the dab guidelines. Given that retargeting to the dab page is not easily defensible (the term isn't really ambiguous), I'd have given more weight to the proposal to refine to a section of the current target, which would have also worked as a default outcome of a no consensus close ("no consensus" being justifiable because the participants were equally split between the two options). Still, I think relisting might be the best option. – Uanfala (talk) 10:14, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

I agree that it was a close call but the individuals who reviewed the content asserted with confidence that this was the best location in light of the history of the article. It had been delisted already and I felt that it was clear enough to avoid a “no consensus.” MBisanz talk 00:11, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

The way I see things, it was a close call between two options that were different from the one selected in the close. I don't think a confident assertion counts for much once a major fault has been pointed out. I imagine the close may have been arrived at by assigning a bit too much weight on the preference of the two people who were confident enough to produce their bolded votes visibly at the start of their comments, and not quite enough weight on the substance of the discussion (a mistake that we all make sometimes, especially when in a hurry). MBisanz, do you think you might be able to re-open the discussion? – Uanfala (talk) 00:52, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
I think the close was good, but obviously always open to feedback, so I have reopened and relisted. MBisanz talk 01:29, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Let's look at the vote that said It would be a perfect target as it would allow people to end up at the right place. While that is the definition of what an ideal redirect is, there was no explanation to that opinion. Another vote gave the history, and suggested a target (ostensibly related to the history's explanation, but not mentioned in the explanation). From the closure statement, I intended to find out if the closer had got the justification for the target that I missed, and which I had asked for in the discussion.
The nomination had suggested Geography of Scotland#Political Geography as an option, which was not opposed, and was supported by me. I would have expected this point to also come out in the closure statement, and why it was not considered. Is it the "another location" mentioned in the close? Jay (talk) 05:06, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the relist. I have now pinged the voters for an explanation. Jay (talk) 06:01, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

XFD Closer

Just a heads up, XFD Closer has a bug right now where it does not always carry out the closure (at RfD at least, I'm not sure about elsewhere). You'll need to go through the closes you just made and make sure that they are carried out (which is a good idea to double check anyway). -- Tavix (talk) 20:22, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

These have been closed as Delete, but have not been deleted: Clean team, Baksı, Baksi, 1–2 finish, History of zoology (disambiguation), Bigamy (in Civil Law). Jay (talk) 20:30, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. MBisanz talk 00:48, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
It would have been much more helpful to delete those with a link to the discussion instead of "XfD". The discussion has handy links for closure [ Closure: keep/retarget/delete ] where if you click the delete button it will prefill the deletion screen with a link to the discussion. You still need to go through discussions you closed as keep and make sure the RfD tags are removed, and discussions you closed as retarget and make sure they are retargeted properly and the tags removed. -- Tavix (talk) 00:57, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I just did the manual review. I do not think I missed anything. MBisanz talk 01:15, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

close of Harry Potter's Rfd

I saw your close of Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2022_April_21#Harry_Potter's as retarget. Tavix did suggest retargeting, but the article at the base name Harry Potter is about the novel series; it would seem to me this redirect is much more likely to be used in reference to Harry Potter (character), as in Tavix's example, which was why I agreed with Tavix's reasoning but not the suggested target. In any case, I don't think the consensus was to retarget to Harry Potter. Can you take another look, or provide further explanation? Cheers, Mdewman6 (talk) 01:27, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Thomas Milo article

Hello, I see that the Thomas Milo article was deleted after a discussion. This guy is a giant of Arabic typography. I was going to make an article about him, but I'm wondering if you could undelete the article or if I could have access to the deleted text so I don't have to start from scratch.

I have plenty of sources. There's virtually an entire chapter about his work at DecoType in the book Nemeth, Titus (2017). Arabic type-making in the Machine Age. The influence of technology on the form of Arabic type, 1908-1993. Brill. ISBN 978-90-04-30377-5. OCLC 993032900. and he's probably the most cited figure in the book as well. I will develop the article and provide reliable sources. إيان (talk) 05:09, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

KSI vs. Joe Weller deletion reversion

Hi @MBisanz, to start out just want to say I'm relatively new to wikipedia and not 100% sure this is the correct way to go about what I'm trying to achieve (I saw that on Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion it says "If you believe that the deletion was handled improperly or that circumstances have changed, please contact the administrator who deleted it." which is why I ended up posting this here) so applogies in advance if it is not.

In February 2018 you deleted an article on the boxing match between two YouTubers and amateur boxers, Joe Weller and KSI. At the time this was after a vote deemed that it was not noteworthy, which was probably the correct call at the time, however I think circumstances have changed as this is now considered the event (specifically due to KSI and what he has gone on to do, including proffesional bouts) that 'kickstarted' the current trend of influencer boxing events which now recieve a lot of coverage and are often streamed on reputable TV channels and sports streaming services like DAZN.

I was wondering if it would be possible to revert the deletion of this article with that new information in light. Or, if you think it would be more apropriate, the article could be reinstated in draft space or my user space and I would happily edit it and bring it up to date.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the ramble, haha TripleJayDoubleYou (talk) 06:29, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:26, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Request for Restoration of page Siobhan Flynn

Please let me know if I am contacting you incorrectly.

I requested an undeletion of the Siobhan Flynn biography here, and I was told to contact the administrator who deleted the page - Yunshui. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Megalon Deletion Request

Hello friend, I only recently became aware of the deletion request for the article on Megalon which has concluded with the consensus of merging it with Godzilla vs. Megalon. I just thought I would give you a heads up, I was working on expanding it in a separate userspace before transferring it over to the main article, but have sort of put that project in hiatus while I am working on the multitude of other articles. Anyways, you are welcome to make edits on that userspace if you wish because I won't be able to to any major edits to it for a while. Good luck on your endeavors and happy editing!
