Hi Luke Elaine Burke, regarding your recent report on the vandalism noticeboard, please keep in mind that the noticeboard is generally only used to report editors who have already received multiple warnings for vandalism. Because 186.237.100.236 (talk · contribs) has only received a single warning at User talk:186.237.100.236 § December 2024, they should be given a chance to read that warning, review the relevant policies, and change their editing behavior.

If they continue to vandalize articles or otherwise edit disruptively, please use higher-level warning templates to send a stronger message, and report them to the noticeboard only if they continue to disregard these warnings. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! — Newslinger talk 04:31, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your kindness and guidance! L.E. Rainer 04:33, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Feel free to ask me or the friendly editors at the Teahouse if you have any questions about editing. — Newslinger talk 04:35, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help me!

[edit]

Please help me with... Hi there, I am at a crossroads regarding a suspicious user. I feel as if this user is intentionally removing crucial information and context from multiple pages, and is using the following message to get away with it: "I am an assiduous copy editor. I never edit for substance but only for flow, syntax, punctuation, and usage. Jotaharder (talk) 11:12 am, Today (UTC−5)Reply"

After I posted a warning on his talk page, he replied with this message and then made two more other of these seemingly significant edits to the South Africa page.

I am writing this message here as I am still very new to this, and do not know the proper protocol for dealing with this situation. I assume this may be a sockpuppet or paid editor, but I may be incorrect which is why I am asking for help!

Thanks so much in advance, L.E. Rainer 16:37, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

L.E. Rainer 16:37, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to add that I am still very busy, but if needed I can further my arguments with proof from multiple crucial wikepedia pages and show evidence of consensus not being reached and these huge edits being made without proper description of what is being done. I do feel as if this user is intentionally not including edit descriptions in order to stay under the radar. I may be wrong of course!
L.E. Rainer 16:43, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am new to editing Wikipedia so would love to hear specific critiques of my edits rather than you making blanket accusations. I have never added edit descriptions because they are basic, obvious copy edits IMO. But again maybe there are wiki customs with which I’m unfamiliar. Please do review any edit I’ve ever made and I’ll engage. Jotaharder (talk) 16:50, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thank you, I didn't mean to tag you as I knew that I could be wrong and didn't want to create unnecessary drama. I will be sure to review the edits that you made with extreme precision and caution before responding further, and I apologize for the blanket accusations.
Best, L.E. Rainer 16:54, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No stress! Please do let me know if I’ve broken any unwritten rule. I’m new here! I’ve avoided editing for decades but I’ve just grown tired of writing that isn’t tight. Standing by! Jotaharder (talk) 17:03, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jotaharder, given your kindness and responses I assume that I am in the wrong in this interaction. I was under the (most likely false) assumption that you were some sort of sockpuppet or paid editor that was intentionally vandalizing the site, which is why I attempted to ask for help on my talk page. Sorry for causing this stress for you!
L.E. Rainer 17:14, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy (dismayed?) to learn a new word (sockpuppet). I’m guessing vandals abound (I have been surprised to find so many locked pages). Zero stress! Sorry to give you more (unpaid?) work. Happy to engage about any edit whenever you have time. If a best practice is to actually explain my wordsmithing in future copy edits I shall do just that. Jotaharder (talk) 17:25, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! This interaction has been so positive and thoughtful which is refreshing, considering the incredible amounts of name calling and purposeless argument I see daily. I do believe that it is best practice to explain your wordsmithing, (even if it is brief and concise) as it allows individuals patrolling for this vandalism to better identify those who are acting in good faith and those who are not! I will leave below some of my favourite links that have helped me so far and I hope you can find value in them as well!
I also included some links that are not related to copy editing, as I feel that you are talanted enough to do it all (only if you wish, of course!)
Please do not hesitate to reach out or let me know if you have any questions as I would love to help!
Best, L.E. Rainer 17:33, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very helpful! I will leave notes from now on. Jotaharder (talk) 17:40, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About Arbeiten8

[edit]

Hi, it's me again. I looked through Arbeiten8's talk page messages and edit history and now I'm kind of wondering about something. How obnoxious do you have to be to get blocked? Arbeiten8 already has several warnings for blatant WP:NPOV violations with their edits, let alone how they fling a list of buzzwords and very biased sources at anyone who disagrees with them. Does assuming good faith cover this kind of behavior or are the admins simply waiting for Arbeiten8 to keep this up just a little longer so they can block them for disruptive editing and picking fights on talk pages? ApteryxRainWing🐉 | Roar with me!!! | My contributions 16:46, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. I have no idea if the admins are building a case against Arbeiten8, but I assume they have not if what you are saying is true as they should be blocked. You do have to warn these users as to assume good faith and give time for them to learn and change, so if you can build a case for repeated behaviour that would help in getting this person (at the very least) punished.
I will be sure to look deeper into this later today when I have more time!
Best, L.E. Rainer 16:50, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, as long as Arbeiten is on someone's radar, then that would be nice. I guess the assume-good-faith assumption would be that Arbeiten is just really passionate about their work but I personally think (from my few interactions with them, at least) that there's something more malicious behind their edits and confrontational talk pages messages. I'm not sure if it's a bad case of a massive ego or maybe a case where they genuinely cannot tell how biased they are. I won't speculate any more on this, but I feel like there's just something going on here beyond just a new kid who is unfamiliar with what Wikipedia is. ApteryxRainWing🐉 | Roar with me!!! | My contributions 16:56, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree! L.E. Rainer 16:58, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Welp, the saga continues. Check out this rambling gem of a Talk Page response where Arbeiten brought up Sen. Lindsey Graham for some reason. I'm not sure if this counts as WP:NOTHERE since they are kind of doing their own thing in their own little world, completely oblivious to everyone else. I might leave a note about them on the admin noticeboard if they try anything else, because this is getting stupid and is occupying too much of my time and headspace. ApteryxRainWing🐉 | Roar with me!!! | My contributions 21:50, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had seen the message sent at 4:48 (UTC-5) and laughed at the arrogance and level of arguments expressed. You should really just ignore this person at this point! They are indeed in "their own little world" and it's pretty clear they will not actually consider the other side of arguments even if they refute their central point beyond a reasonable doubt. You should check out this article, I think you will find it funny in relation to this situation.
Let me know if you need any help with any report made for this user (or anything else :), L.E. Rainer 22:16, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'll report them to the admins in the morning, I've got stuff to do tonight. Thanks for all the support with this <3 ApteryxRainWing🐉 | Roar with me!!! | My contributions 22:29, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Query

[edit]

Hello, Luke Elaine Burke,

I was looking at your User page and under the section "Keep the positivity up 👍, and the negativity down 👎", you mention an editor who has been blocked for over 5 years. How did you even hear about User:Eric Corbett? It makes me wonder if you are truly a new account because a newbie who has only been editing for 3 weeks would never know about the years-long drama that surrounded this troubled but talented editor. How did you come to learn about this editor?

So, have you edited Wikipedia with previous account(s)? If so, please disclose them on your User page unless you are a Clean start account. There is no problem with having a previous account, I had one myself that I mention on my own User page. You just have to be forthcoming about yourself and your level of experience editing on the project. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:19, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz, I know this may seem egotistical, but I do not mean it in the way that most people who look into this conversation will assume me to be, I am NOT a clean start account, and am able to dedicate myself to my interests in unique ways. I don't know if that makes sense but I basically just love learning and am able to find meaning in things quicker than others. The only thing similar to what you are suggesting is that, I had a different name, (my actual name), and changed it to a pen name. If you have any more questions or suspicions (and I hope you know that I take no offence what so ever for your message!) I would love to answer them as everything that I have stated on this site can be explained and should (hopefully) be verifiable! Best, L.E. Rainer 01:27, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I would also like to say that I have never edited without being logged into my account. L.E. Rainer 01:28, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I, for example, have an idea of what happened with them. I learned about it from delving into the old public admin archives and sockpuppet lists. ApteryxRainWing🐉 | Roar with me!!! | My contributions 17:31, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lang parameters

[edit]

Hiya, just wondering if you could elaborate on this edit summary. MB2437 03:17, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be pretty busy this week but I'll start. Thanks so much L.E. Rainer 03:23, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no need to add |language=en (or local variants) to English Wikipedia. However please add languages if the reference is not in English. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 04:44, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, LEB, how on Earth do you know about Babel? Liz Read! Talk! 08:57, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking through some old archives and version history, I don't remember the exact page (consedering I have 900 page watchers its pretty hard), but I simply assumed that those paramaters were (and maybe continue to be?) used for global translations across the wiki. Again these are just hypothesis so please let me know if any of this is incorrect. L.E. Rainer 13:50, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah - I think Graeme answered the question I propsed on if they continue to be used? I assume that these edits are now handeled by language models and bots made by really smart people? L.E. Rainer 13:53, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz, adding Babel boxes to my userpage was literally my first edit. It's not some sort of arcane thing only experienced users know about. They're on all kinds of people's userpages. -- asilvering (talk) 01:16, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Art

[edit]

@Luke Elaine Burke, hi ... this is Augnablik, another Wikipedia editor. I'm interested in helping to rebuild the Ramendra Kumar article and to collaborate with any other interested editors in doing so. Because I saw from the History page of the article that you made several fairly recent edits to it, I'm contacting you to see if this idea would be something you'd like to go forward together with. Augnablik (talk) 18:14, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would love that. L.E. Rainer 18:28, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I should have mentioned that I also invited another fairly recent editor who contributed to the Ramendra Kumar article revisions to collaborate as well. The name escapes me at the moment and it wouldn't be easy for me to go back and check at this moment, but I recall that the first 4 letters were THUC and sounded sort of like a quasi-Greek name. Augnablik (talk) 19:16, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright I'm looking forward to it! I love to play with dough!! L.E. Rainer 19:22, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cute, Luke. 🙂. That metaphor can keep us working on the article with lightheartedness.
By the way, I posted my declaration of COI at the article's Talk page, in case you haven't read it yet Augnablik (talk) 03:41, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! L.E. Rainer 05:26, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wonderful! And thanks for removing that stray letter on my User page ... I don't recall seeing it, last time I looked.

By the way, I'm just curious: did you begin editing the article because it appeared as a suggested article for working on? Augnablik (talk) 18:48, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. L.E. Rainer 19:27, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Sir, I actually did love solving the waterloo posting they had and was going to show it to you bur you were bus eL.E. Rainer 05:29, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Luke, the next two messages after this seem to be part of a different thread than this one. How did they end up here, I wonder? Augnablik (talk) 05:36, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your own Malcolm X notes are not suitable

[edit]

I reverted your edit to Copy editing again, for two reasons:

  1. I take it that you are not a notable person, so your personal notes are of no interest or value. (Nor are mine, it's not personal).
  2. MOS:IMAGES says in summary that images are to illustrate, not to decorate. The one existing image does the job quite well enough, it doesn't need a second one.

I appreciate that you are new and we all learned by bumping into things at the beginning. But I suggest that you ask for advice at the WP:Teahouse for a better explanation, as this is a bit complicated. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk)

Also, I see that nobody gave you the welcome pack so <drum roll>

Welcome!

Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for persistently making disruptive edits.
If you believe that there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Widr (talk) 09:57, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ELB, you will be blocked from even editing this talk page if you use it for anything except to appeal your block. Posting stuff about other websites, other editors, other articles is pointless because they will be reverted and will also contribute to a perception that you are not here to build an encyclopedia. It is essential that you read, study and understand the appeal process before you lodge your appeal. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 14:46, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
