You're famous
[edit]The Observer July 01 2007 For Your Information by Tim Adams ROGER TALK 09:34, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
- Gracious! It was very kind of you to let me know. The article over-states my accomplishments a bit; I am a member of the U.S. Supreme Court bar, which means I can bring cases and make arguments before them. To be an attorney at the U.S. Supreme Court implies that I work for the Court itself or as a clerk for one of the Justices, an honor which I have not enjoyed. It is a tiny thing in the context of the article, but the Court would be peeved with me if I didn't say something, somewhere, to correct the record (so I choose here and now).
- Also, I remember the excitement of the first times I tried to get online using a very slow dial-up. For several seconds that curious beeping static sounded like all the world's voices competing for attention, sharing their thoughts, a global mind humming away. — I admired many lines in the article (as well as the piece as a whole) but this is the one that I found most touching. I remember that feeling, too. And yay for the lines on the Nature study comparing Wiki's error rate to the EB's! --Lisasmall 18:56, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Whoops, I'd've made it clearer! I'm not the writer of the piece: I saw it yesterday and thought you'de be interested. However, the Supreme Court information was fascinating, it's amazing the difference a preposition makes. (My brother is a barrister so it almost runs in my blood.) ROGER TALK 20:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- I know, I got tangled up by the maroon name of author immediately adjoining your own name in maroon, without intervening punctuation. I finally figured out that "Roger" had sent the article that "Tim Adams" had written. My thanks are for you, for sending me notice of my newfound fame... heh! :) — Lisasmall 08:44, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Salem Userbox Not Working?
[edit]{{User:UBX/User Salem Trials Interest}} (user name MBX, box title Salem Trials Interest) Welcome home from your vacation. I tried to use this box on my own user page today, but it kept falling off the right side of the frame (attached at its left edge to whatever box precedes it), unlike all the other boxes there. I don't know if you're the right person to ask, or what could be wrong, or if it is something I can fix by editing the box myself. Any ideas? It seems to be fine here, although it is left-aligned rather than right-aligned, as I would have expected. —— Lisasmall 19:54, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not exactly sure what was going wrong, but your userpage looks fine now, so I'll assume you've fixed it. —METS501 (talk) 05:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your contributions to Bhairav. About the sloka, a discussion is started by me on WP:HINDU, please present your views there.--Redtigerxyz 06:02, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Please feel free to move or copy my remarks to WP:IN where you think they should belong, or tell me where and I'll do it. - Would you do it yourself. Thanks.--Redtigerxyz 13:03, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think I have fixed it here on Sritttvanidhi and here on WP:Hindu. I also dropped a short note on into the WP:IN discussion. Sorry I went astray. At the end of your WP:Hindu talkpage note, I read the first and sentences to mean you wanted us to go over to the Sritattvanidhi page and leave our comments there, and it looks like Abecedare thought so too, so you might want to clarify that. Hope this works out so that some slokas get included somewhere. I think examples add a lot this kind of religious article. -- Lisasmall | Talk 15:18, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Gray box quotes
[edit]This line moved from socking section immediately above: I wanted to put that in a gray box instead of the cquote template; can you teach me how? Lisasmall 16:00, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
You can put things in a gray box by using the {{Quotation}} template. MastCell Talk 16:24, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- MastCell, so kind of you, thanks! Here's what I was trying in addition to the cquote template:
I was experimenting with just using leading spaces, which sort of works too, with a different border. However, it seems to let things run off the right-hand side of the page unless you manually break each line and enter the leading spaces manually again. The Quotation template you recommended is better, and I've put it in place above to quote WP:SOCK. I went here - Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#No_or_limited_formatting.E2.80.94showing_exactly_what_is_being_typed and here - Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#Character_formatting but the <PRE> and <CODE> tags recommended there didn't work worth a darn for me in this situation. Guess they are just good for short clips of actual computer code or similar items, not the text quoting effect I wanted to do.
- Now, may I ask you another question? What combo of tildes do you type to make your talk link show up in your signature? Or are you manually re-entering [[User Talk:MastCell|Talk]] each time? If there's a chat space on Wiki to ask this sort of thing live, I don't know where it is. -- Lisasmall 17:02, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- Lisa, you do that by going up to Preferences and clicking the "Raw signatures" box. If you put text with a leading space, that's interpreted the same way as if you enclosed it with <pre> tags.--SarekOfVulcan 17:11, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sarek, thank you for the lessons. I hadn't felt the need for a talk link in my sig until lately. It works! :) When I have time, I'll tweak it to get rid of the bold, which is distracting. -- Lisasmall | Talk 21:33, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Name change
[edit]Please discuss name change of articles in talk pages before taking the drastic step of the name change or merge , unlike what you did in Vahana. You have improved the Vahana article to a great extent with the sourcing. Hope you will improve it further. --Redtigerxyz 06:30, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Redtigerxyz, are you sure you don't have me mixed up with someone else? I don't think I've ever even seen the Asana page (before glancing at it right now), much less changed it. I am nowhere in the page's edit history going back at least three years (before I even began as a Wikipedia editor). As to Vehicle (Hindu), I did bring up the Vahana-Vehicle change on a talk page, and I'm confident I handled the name change in according to policy. We can put up a note asking for consensus if you want to. -- LisaSmall T/C 00:21, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Copyright, public agencies, and all that yadda yadda
[edit]Hi Lisa, I was very excited to find your comment on mug shots and copyrights from earlier today. I have been frustrated for some time by the fact (sic?) that so many Oregon government-produced materials are copyrighted, and unavailable for use on Wikipedia. I got people interested in this issue some time ago, and drafted a letter to try to get our legislature to do something about it; but haven't done much for a while, mostly because I wanted to have a better understanding of the legal framework before taking any bold steps. (As and example, the Oregon Secretary of State produces a book every year called the Oregon Blue Book, which has all kinds of charts and photos; but at the bottom of the web page, it clearly states "Copyright Oregon Secretary of State." I've talked to a former SoS and a current candidate for that office, and both think it would be great to open this stuff up, but thought it would be a complex legislative project.
Anyway, if you have a moment to look over what we've written thus far, and offer any feedback, I/we would very much appreciate it! I'm sure if we can establish the right framework for Oregon, it will be very helpful to much of the rest of Wikipedia. (I know your background is not in Oregon, but it sounds like you were speaking mainly from a knowledge of federal law; so hopefully it applies universally.)
Thanks in advance for any light you may be able to shed on the situation! -Pete (talk) 23:20, 11 December 2007 (UTC) (and the various gnomes of Wikiproject Oregon)
- Hoo, boy, Pete, I don't dare help you in any specific way because I'm not licensed in Oregon. It's one thing to give a general legal point of view on an abstract topic, and quite another to give advice on a specific situation in a specific state. What I can do for you is suggest some strategies about how to get Oregon attorneys on-board to give you some free help, both with legislative or executive proposals, or by going to court. Why don't you click the "email this user" link in the left frame here so I can try to get you where you want to go? It's infuriating that materials paid for by the public are handled this way. Do they expect you to pay twice? And if they aren't slapping copyright notices on there for the legitimate purpose of rewarding authors, exactly why are they doing it? You're right to start at the state level, but any state legislation should specifically cover local governments, too. I'll look forward to your email. -- LisaSmall T/C 15:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Only marginally related: I'd like to thank you for weighing in on the topic on the mug shots template talk page. It's refreshing to see someone with an actual legal background commenting on a legal topic. --AdamRoach (talk) 21:03, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Adopt me?
[edit]Hi Lisa, thanks for your message, and thanks for asking about adoption.
Just to point out those examples you highlighted... User:Spelunkster/Scammer is not an article, rather it is a personal Sandbox, a "testing-ground" in the namespace of the user who wrote it, where you can have a go at formatting and writing articles without damaging the original. For example, I have User:Marbles/sandbox; however as you correctly pointed out, you should remove category tags in these tests as so not to interfere with Wikipedia main namespace.
Adoption can offer a whole host of benefits to an adoptee, including personal hints, advice, progress checks and much more.
For your information, I live in the United Kingdom, and therefore my timezone is UTC or BST. I am available on Wikipedia most days, and can offer advice on a range of topics including copyrighting images, policies, edit disputes, basic formatting, NPOV and referencing, alongside other ideas. To contact me, you can leave a message on my talk page or e-mail me.
If you wish to finalise an adoption status, please add {{adoptee|Marbles}} on your user page. If you already have the userbox {{adoptme}} on your page, please replace that with the one above. I can then add you to my list of adoptees. Please don't hesitate to contact me. Many thanks, /Marbles (talk) 15:37, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
- Adoptee check-up: Hi, is everything okay? Remember if you ever need discussion or guidance on anything, please contact me on my talk page or email me. Please also contact me if you feel you're confident enough now to "graduate" adoptee state. /Marbles (talk) 15:05, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Marbles, thanks for your help. I've left a note on your talk page. -- LisaSmall T/C 01:37, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. Best wishes and remember I'm always at hand if there's anything you need. /Marbles (talk) 14:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Mugshots
[edit]You point out that mugshot are obviously public domain, and that is how they are treated by the press. Why are they all tagged as copyrighted images on wikipedia? If I upload mugshots will they get deleted? Lobojo (talk) 14:13, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- Apparently Wiki believes that all federal mugshots are public domain, but believes that states and local governments may assert copyright in their own mugshots. I disagree, but I have no idea how to persuade Wiki's powers-that-be that they are wrong. I wish I could tell you whether the mugshots you upload will be deleted, but I have given up on trying to upload photos myself because I can't figure out who deletes them, or why, or how to appeal the deletion. It's been my experience that Wikipedia and Wiki Commons are very user-unfriendly about uploading photos. — LisaSmall T/C 18:00, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Hidden article re Elizabeth Morgan.
[edit]You might find this article's history to be of interest.--88.198.8.14 (talk) 02:39, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
- (Crossposted from 88's talk page; also recaptioned this section from "Hidden Article" to add "re Elizabeth Morgan") - You left a message on my talk page telling me the history of the Elizabeth Morgan page would be of interest. Why? What did you want me to notice? Is there any particular reason you wanted me, versus any other Wikipedian to see it? I'm not clear on what you want. If you are concerned about the repeated revision of the lengthy Elizabeth Morgan article to a redirect to the very brief Elizabeth Morgan Act, I am not an administrator and can do no more about it than you can, which would be to revert the redirect, as has already been done (and re-reverted) once. -- LisaSmall T/C 17:25, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Re: Template missing, what should be used?
[edit]Wikipedia:WikiProject Inline Templates lists the template you're referring to. I deleted it after another user tagged it as no longer needed. However, if it is needed, let me know and I'll be happy to restore it. In general, having an in-line template like that for such a limited purpose seems a bit silly, but that's just my opinion. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 20:09, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, McBride. I got some more help at WP:VPM as follows:
- 'citation needed' is inserted by {{fact}}. I can't find a template that adds 'date needed', though one could easily be made. Algebraist 09:39, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- {{when}} and {{year}} are the nearest matches. If you want a new template but cannot build it yourself, just request it somewhere (EAR or VPA, for example) or ask another editor directly. Wandering around in the template namespace will not be very fruitful; better to look through the categories, like this one. Adrian M. H. 17:23, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on this article, and your efforts at sourcing. May I suggest WP:CITE for uniformity among citations? Also, I would suggest not using NNDB, and replacing it with some other cite to a source that better satisfies WP:RS/WP:V - NNDB is not widely used on Wikipedia and would be something that could get dinged at a future article-quality review (WP:GA, WP:FA, etc.) Cirt (talk) 01:59, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the links. I'm not concerned about NNDB because every sentence which uses it has another source as well, with NNDB usually providing only a finer level of detail, e.g., specific years on the kids instead of "late 80s." The cites are pinpoint so a reader can tell which source goes with which assertion, and the facts cited are not contentious.
- I have no concern about an article review. This one is so bare-bones and lacking in detail it will never get a good review unless someone decides to mother it along. My goal was to provide key biographical data which had been entirely missing (spouses & children) because of my interest in possibly developing a new category of U.S. legislators who bore children while in office. Speier has probably gotten all the attention she's going to get from me. I'm also not prepared to go in and regularize the wide variety of citation formats put in by other users. IIRC, I converted many existing links from inline weblinks to footnotes, but that's the end of the time I can put in on this. — LisaSmall T/C 20:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- No worries, I will probably get to the standardization at some point. And I agree with you that if NNDB is used in addition to another source that is probably much less of a problem. Cirt (talk) 20:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

senator joe
[edit]Hello Lisa. Please do not rename section headings on talk pages. While your new title about political speculation maybe more accurate, it makes finding threads extremely difficult which is why I didn't change it back (don't wanna confuse anyone who posted under the new section heading). I had thought it was archived... couldn't find it and had to do some history detective work to find out where the thread went... Thanks Garycompugeek (talk) 22:00, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm surprised you had a hard time, because both titles were preserved immediately under the new head, see here. I'm sorry you spent time in the archives-I know how aggravating that is. However, a quick control-F search of the existing page using "Senator Joe" or the other old heading would have popped it right up. The refactoring was done to prevent the creation of two unlinked discussions on the same page on the same topic, which would lead to people double-posting in both threads to cover all the bases. —LisaSmall T/C 04:40, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well I'm old and senile :p - one more thought on this... we all use the section headings as bookmarks for threads. Maybe a better way to condense topics would be to leave the section with a note underneath to what/where the threads went. Regardless (this is not a big deal)... nice chatting with you. Garycompugeek (talk) 16:45, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's a good thought. :) —LisaSmall T/C 02:22, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Maybe a better way to condense topics would be to leave the section with a note underneath to what/where the threads went. Regardless (this is not a big deal)... nice chatting with you. DYK Nomination
[edit]Hi. I've nominated Abbott Hall Brisbane, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. Paxse (talk) 08:46, 19 April 2009 (UTC) Hope you don't mind me nominating it for you. I think it's a great article Lisa, well done!
- Thank you very much, Paxse, I'm honored. It's probably the most complete original article I've submitted; I was delighted to find an illustration for it. —LisaSmall T/C 00:59, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
- You are very welcome - I like the article a lot. Yes, I was actually tagging orphans when I came across your article. Ideally it needs 3 incoming links (mentions in other WP articles) from articles (not talk pages, redirects, Dabs or WP pages) to be 'de-orphaned.'
Try using the search function to find other mentions of Brisbane to start with(no good i just tried!). Then try adding him to relevant related topics. The better linked our articles are the easier it is for readers to navigate from one article to another and follow up interesting links - so it is good to avoid articles lost out on their own :) 'See Also' is a bit of a last resort - those lists can easily get out of hand, but use it if you can't find anywhere else. Surely the South Carolina Rail Road could use a link to Abbot for starters? Cheers, Paxse (talk) 07:48, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

James Oliver Van de Velde
[edit]Dear Lisa, I'm sorry for my late response. I understand your concern, I know it is confusing. As you said: at the time, some catholics preferred to call their language "Flemish", to distinguish it from "Hollands" (= Dutch from the Northern Netherlands) which was considered a calvinist "Trojan horse". Yet, this distinction is political (or religious); linguists, even when writing in a historical context, refer to both as "Dutch". So the language is "Dutch". Maybe we could add a little footnote to mention he himself preferred to call it "Flemish". But we should not write on wikipedia that he spoke "Flemish" and French, because Flemish actually does not exist. It has no written standard of its own, so you can't really "teach" it, and the 4 main Dutch dialects that are spoken in Belgium have continua in the Netherlands rather than within Flanders. That is why distinguishing "Flemish" from "Dutch" - as if the former were not part of the latter - does not make much sense. So for that matter there is no need to worry. I hope this explains my edit. Kind regards, --Hooiwind (talk) 06:37, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
- Reverted to "Flemish," which is what the contemporaneous and historical records (which are verifiable and cited) say. Changing it to "Dutch" based on personal expertise or opinion violates WP:OR and may violate WP:NPOV. Explained further on revision history. -- LisaSmall T/C 02:36, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
James Oliver Van de Velde
[edit]I apologize for deleting the text, "His full name, almost never referenced in any materials about his life or religious career, was John Andrew James Oliver Benedict Rottheir Van de Velde." I assumed incorrectly that this was in error after doing a search of the book The Church in Chicago… I later discovered that find does not show text in footnotes on Google Books. Top notch article. We have images of Bishop Van de Velde, I will be happy to post one. Again my apology. Thanks, --Stmaryarchives (talk) 22:46, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for explaining; I couldn't figure out why you would have removed it. (No more than I could figure out why his parents inflicted it! But perhaps we will make some Rottheir genealogist very happy.) Also, nice to know that about Google Books' search engine, thank you. And I'm very glad you'll put up an image of Van de Velde. I think he deserves it. What a life! -- LisaSmall T/C 02:36, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Election user box changed
[edit]Per your request, I modified my Userbox so that you can pick the year. I hadn't intended to change it or update it until 2012 (the next time this office comes up for election in the district in which I live). I've not done much with user boxes before (other than shamelessly stealing this one from someone else and changing the text inside) and it turns out this change was rather trivial. Notice the pipe symbol | at the end with the year desired after the pipe.
This user stood for public election in 1066. |
Absurd year chosen for emphasis. Tangurena (talk) 23:32, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Mugshot debate (again)
[edit]Hi Lisasmall, There another debate about free vs. non-free here [1]. As a much more expert person in these matters, would you mind weighing in? I for one could also use some help on understanding the nuances of fair-use for copyrighted material on Wikipedia and it could apply to this particular discussion. WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum
[edit]Hi Lisasmall,
I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".
Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.
- Each casebook will have a subpage.
- Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
- It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
- Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
- I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.
What you can do now:
- 1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
- 2. If you're a law student,
- Email http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/WP:Hornbook to your classmates, and tell them to do the same.
- Contact me directly via talk page or email about coordinating a chapter of "Student WP:Hornbook Editors" at your own school.
- (You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
- 3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.
Regards, Andrew Gradman talk/WP:Hornbook 19:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Ronald J. Tabak
[edit]Hi, Lisa; just wanted to draw your attention to MoSDab which requires that targets of a Dab entry provide info on the topic in question (not just be a related topic), which is not the case for Capital punishment w/r to Ronald J. Tabak. I am linking the entry for now to William Henry Hance (altho the ref to him there is at risk in light of the need to remove the copyvio) that follows his name; you may want to consult COI and decide whether you can paraphrase him).
--Jerzy•t 05:47, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- My sole interest in disambiguating Ronald J. Tabak, the attorney, was separating him from confusion with Ron Tabak, the musician. Four other people edited the disambiguation page after me before you did. Perhaps you meant this information for one of them. Someone has added "(fl. 1990s)" and I have no idea what that means. -- LisaSmall T/C 07:44, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
A thought
[edit]This is a very uncomfortable thot, i think bcz i am unsure just what AGF requires of me. Perhaps it will be a more comfortable thot for you if i go so far as to say that i've read your user page and skimmed about a thousand lines of your edit history (noticing titles), and i expect you and i would have a lot more congruencies than conflicts in our political and social attitudes.
And my hope is that my having said that will convince you that i'm (to the extent i can introspect it!) sincerely trying both to respect the sophistication of your profession ethics and to trust your judgment better than my own, and that i fear you haven't already made any mention of this bcz it's too clear to you that it should be left alone. My thot is that your editing interests and professional activities offer so many COI opportunities that i am more comfortable knowing that the matter has explicitly come to the surface in your mind at least bcz one arrogant laymen was rude enuf to say
- You may want to give a moment's thot to pre-emptive disclosure, on a pg lk'd from your user page, of your clients of record and the issues you specialize in, for the reassurance of any colleagues who might doubt it's feasible for you to use your expertise in editing w/o COI.
There, it's said; my work here is done, and thanks. Hmm, i'll just mention a long-standing WP-cultural meme that you'll understand even if you haven't run across our discussion, and whose existence as a formal term of art here may reassure you that we're a little more sophisticated than i've just made us sound: WFTE.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Claricord has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Non notable brand: fails WP:GNG and WP:NCORP after a WP: BEFORE search.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Schminnte (talk • contribs) 16:50, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
