Yeah, I noticed, I have all three on my watchlist. :D This one may be tricky though... if you thought that the CMC and SMMC had few refs and records, the ACMC is gonna be even more sparse. But it may not be an issue, the FL process seems to be highly dependant upon the whims of those who happen to stop by. Please let me know if any of the lists I offered earlier are in your plans for FL, and I will assist (they are an area I have more practical knowledge in).

I would say to consult User:Looper5920. He basically wrote the article from scratch and got it up to A-class singlehandedly. As for your next MOH question, your suggestion of how to split them into sections seems fine. Well, his tours in Djibouti and Qatar sound like they might qualify, but what the durations for them aren't listed, so we don't know if they were long enough to qualify. With SEALs, who knows? He could have deployed for months, or possibly a weekend. Alt text

Hmm... Well, if the intent of having alt text is to facilitate a person using a screen reader, then wouldn't decribing each ribbon be kinda redundant to the text table under each ribbon rack? I mean, the intent of having the display is to identify what awards an individual rates, and a screen reader would certainly read the name of each award. That, and I'm not sure if template:ribbon devices can handle alt text of both the ribbon and the device. That, and one might argue that the images are more decorative, where Wikipedia:Alternative text for images dictates that an alt is not necessary. Though I can certainly imagine that a screen reader would have result in some confusion when reviewing a ribbon rack table. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 05:05, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Ah, a row of three when we are using a base of four rows. Pain in the arse, because unlike the other combinations with rows of four, you have to add a colspan to each cell. If you look at my code for a four plus three stack, you'll notice that I have a dunny row of 12. That's because the lowest common denominator of 3 and 4 is 12. You set the row of three as a colspan of 4, and the rows of four as a colspan of three. But if you leave out the empty row, the spacing will be off. All the time I see good faith edits removing these empty rows and not seemingly noticing how they screw up the table. Actually, just a coincidence. I've been very slowly working through Category:United States Marine Corps officers, adding ribbon racks to anyone who has a reference, I was in the B's today. Do let me know if there ever comes up an issue regarding awards, either in format, precedence, ratings, etc. in an article review. I've accumulated a lot of knowledge about them from editing Wikipedia; so I can help with any awards dispute. I normally don't bother with the row numbers unless there are a number of rows; I picked four as a good number. Any less, and the reader probably won't have to count to match the image to the text. Probably not worth doing when there are any less. Also of note, because it may come up later, I generally try to use rows of four only when there are eight or more ribbons; any less, I use three. You're right, the line between OR and common sense is blurred (I wrote an essay on the topic a while back). I find that some measure of educated supposition is merited, such as basing good conduct medals based on years of service, and such; but photographs are invaluable and I reference them as much as possible. In this case, the article notes that Pappy's POW status is disputed because he was never declared a prisoner. To err on the side of caution, I chose not to include it because he probably never wore it. I'm sure there were some unit awards given to VMF-214, but I can't find any date records for that unit (nor do I know exactly when he was declared missing--at that point, he would be off the unit's rolls and not longer elligible to rate a unit award). If you come up with some specific findings, I would recommend we take up the discussion on the article's talk page to keep a better record. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 17:04, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Portal

Certainly a fresh idea... while there are plenty of biographies to feature (some in good shape, some in abysmal shape), I doubt that there is enough supporting material aside from the various lists. A portal needs to be able to feature a great deal of cntent, and I'm not sure you have much to work with besides biographies. There are only so many pictures that you can feature before it gets repetitive.

For example, look at the USMC portal: we have 4 features that automatically rotate monthly (article, image, bio, and quote), a monthly history rotation, and two sections that we update as needed (in the news and "did you know?"). Looking at the United States Military portal, each of thier sic features rotates every time you refresh the page, and they have between 78 and 27 available for each, the vast majority of which are Featured contnet, or at least GA. I just don't think there is enough to match that.

You also have to consider that creating a portal is a huge endeavor, and maintaining it as well. That said, if you choose to press on anyway, I will support you as well as I can. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:12, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like a good plan. I'd say that to start a portal, I'd want a flagship of at least a dozen Featured Articles (with a few GAs and A-classes mixed in), and build from there. I'd also say that you want to make sure that Medal of Honor stays FA as well, but I'm sure you'd already fight for that should an FA Review ever crop up.
Another option that would speed things up by expanding the pool would be to create a joint-MOH/Victoria Cross portal. However, I'm sure many would object to that being an arbitrary matchup (and there would be some merit, though I think that the MOH and the VC are most well-known awards in the English speaking world, and this is the English Wikipedia after all). And, you'd also have to make a lot concessions--I know a few of the editors from Wikiproject Orders, Decorations, and Medals who are nigh impossible to work with (and embody the negative stereotypes of Brits as arrogant and conceited). I must admit, I'm fantasizing about a light blue and dark red color schemes... that's kinda odd, isn't it?

Hi Kumioko, I did revert your original edit of the reference section because the format that is used in the article is a combination of Harvard citations which are linked to the bibliography written in the Modern Language Style Guide format (that cannot be considered "general" references as the majority of the citations are actually linked to the reference sources given in the bibliographical record). As to creating a non-linear or non-chronological biography of an important historical figure, what is the reasoning behind that? All biographical writing in an encyclopedic format follows the "story" of the individual. There are many reasons to develop a prologue (which is the lede or "leading" statements) but moving the narrative into a non-chronological order has inherent problems. As to assigning reference points, Wiki world basically uses a "foot/end note" classification rather than the "specific" references that were proposed. Any further revisions such as those found in the sandbox article that you are setting up that are not coherent will also be a question of contention. Perhaps take up your concerns about the direction of the article on its talk/discussion page. FWiW, I did not note where you have made substantial or consequential edits to the article, as the submissions appear to be of the minor variety, mainly dealing with formatting. In not reiterating the above comments, there is one way that can be utilized effectively in addressing your concerns over recurring themes such as CAL's environmental preoccupation or continuing debate over his supposed Nazi sympathies, namely creating sub-articles or "daughter" articles such as what has occurred with Abraham Lincoln, although these are generally looked on with disfavor by the stylistic troops that patrol new articles. On another note, although the article has reached 101 kilobytes, it does not look substantially different from other biographical articles, see: Amelia Earhart, 104 kilobytes long. FWiW, forgive the mild chiding in the last statement, but remember that I am not the "gatekeeper" of the CAL article, that honor falls to Bruce who fiercely maintains the integrity of the article. There you go all done. Just for some background, many of the Medal of Honor citations have broken links due to the Marine Corps whos who site or the Medal of Honor site so I am cleaning them up. I have also been having a lot of issues with the Corenbot tagging the MOH articles with copyright vio tags due to the Home of Heroes website. So this will fix that issue as well. You will likely see many more rolling through as well as cleaning up some dates. In this case the source for the citation was the find a grave website and although that site is good for some info, the actual military site is a better ref for the citation itself. I hope you agree with that assessment. My intention is to add the AMOHW ref to all the recipients for the citation for the ones that are missing or broken. Hi,

I would like you to reconsider your idea of giving up on FPC. I'm not a photographer (as a matter of fact, i don't even own a camera, not even a basic one for family use !). When i first came upon FPC, I was attracted by the beautiful pictures, but like you, I couldn't understand the technical details, and couldn't understand why some pictures were rejected. But I still voted on images I felt confident i could vote on (anyone can access EV for example), and read the others votes to understand the technical details. It was a bit painful at first, but gradually I felt more and more confident. Now, I'm a regular voter there, and as a personal gain, I've learned quite a lot about technical defects and photographic techniques. Absolutely no worries, I was just checking up on a different DYK candidate and I spotted that one at the top of the list. I realized that the "apihighlimits" is actually granted by the actual bot flag, not AWB. A few more concerns ...

I have some confusion of checklinks for Louis H. Carpenter article. All are in the white with one in the green. I do not know how to resolve this one. Can you help?

The link redirects to this link but it goes to the correct or first html despite it saying it is a redirect. Puzzled.

In addtion, I have expanded and fixed most of the concerns in the A review. See: A-Class review & criteria FAQ.

Lastly, I see a possible need of category expandsion. Or is this overkill? See discussion at Talk:Louis H. Carpenter.

You use an AWB script for cleanup on biography article, right? Can you add something to your scripted changes? Specifically, {{portal|United States Marine Corps|USMC_logo.svg}} can be replaced with {{USMCportallink}}. It's handy for me to use the help:what links here tool to find USMC-related articles. Like I said, I use the links tool to find USMC articles (usually to find portal features). I do that with other templates as well, like the navbox. ERcheck origionally asked me to make it simply for shorthand when writing new articles. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:13, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I was just looking at that too. The Military Times page used as a reference has a picture of the Medal of Honor, but the citation is for the Distinguished Service Cross. I searched Home of Heroes for any mention of a Medal of Honor recipient named Lynn Smith and found nothing, but it does list Lynn Smith as a DSC recipient here. Hi Kumioko, the ArticleHistory problem didn't need fixing, it needed removing :) An event should never be added to the template if it is still in progress. An "active" FLC should not be noted in the template; it should only be moved into the template when the FLC has been closed and there has been an outcome (featured/not featured). {{ArticleHistory}} is quite a difficult template to use, so don't worry.   • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.

Side effect of Sources → References change

As the newly revised Donald Eugene O'Brien page shows, your latest round of housecleaning can leave pages (especially bios of federal judges) with two separate sections entitled "References." This has happened when a bot-created federal judge bio had already been enhanced to include proper citations, which were appropriately put in a new "References" section. At the moment of creation, the title of the bot-created section with the external link to the subject judge's subpart of the Biographical Directory of Federal Judges had been titled "Sources," and you're automatically converting that to Sources. The Sources → References change may in theory be an improvement, given the protocol for layout, but it shouldn't result in two "References" sections. My suggestion is that, where there already is a References section in a bio, and the Sources section follows it, just have the bot or protocol delete the Sources title altogether. Would you please stop editing the article on Francis E. Dec using Project:AWB. Every time you are doing this, you are replacing the name "Dec" with "December". Moving forward for Portal:United States

The nomination for FP for Portal:United States was closed as unsuccessful. I've got six months of anniversaries left to do, and I've got about six weeks of relatively consistent access to the internet before I hit a point where I won't be able to say for sure if I'll have any access at all. I'll get as much done on that as possible. Once I'm done with that, we can give it another run. There were a few other minor issues that got brought up during the nomination, but I don't see anything particularly difficult standing in the way of the third nomination. Regarding your plans to revamp it, I've been the primary maintainer of the portal since shortly after Aude created it. I think the In the news section ought to be kept. I'm less attached to the sections for legislation, court cases, and administration activities, although I think having that information in some form is useful and I've been keeping it moderately up to date. Hello my friend

I dont want to see you on the wrong side of the fence here. I will explain a few reason why I believe we should not delete project if they are not in bad taste. We have created banners/tag because....

  • Deleting a project only makes it not visible to normal readers (non-admins) - thus does not save any space on Wiki as all pages are retained for historical reference purposes they just may not all be seen by the public.
  • We have the tags/banners Template:Historical and Template:Dormant so that old projects that did some work can still been seen by our readers - thus the projects will not be made again by mistake and or it could (but not likely) be revived.
  • We have the tags/banners Template:Defunct and Template:Mothballed so that we dont delete this fail projects that never got of the ground - because we want our editors to see why this projects were not viable (no members - not a broad topic etc..) - again may prevent a new project with a similar topic from being made.
  • We are free to post links on the failed projects to other projects that cover this topics - thus redirecting wanted editors to the proper projects that are still alive.

So basically deleting the pages causes undo conflict and leads to projects being remade or ones similar being made because editors cant see why they failed in the first place. Moxy (talk) 19:35, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Great to hear from you and I see your point but there are also a couple good reasons why we shouldn't leave them all either.
  • If us non admin folk don't see a project we are less likely to join it thinking its still active. I have seen a lot of editors join inactive and defunct projects because they don't understand how these work and then wonder why questions go unanswered.
  • Aside from just saving space a lot of these projects are just clutter. There are some I admit that have been submitted for deletion that I thought were silly but the majority probably should never have been made into projects to begin with. Many barley have the scope or number of articles to rate as a task force let alone a project. As for telling our users why they failed I don't believe I have ever seen a project say anything about why it failed.
  • I look at it this way, we have a process for deleting unneeded, unwarranted and improper articles, files and other types of content and we should do that for Projects as well. If we have a project that has been abandoned for a long period of time, has not been created properly, has such a narrow scope or size that it can't succeed, etc. then we should suggest getting rid of it. I understand what your saying and thats why I just submit it for MFD and let the group decide. If there is sufficient interest to keep it thats fine, if not then thats ok too. --Kumioko (talk) 19:49, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Scope and Mission of WikiProject United States

Welcome to WikiProject United States on the English Wikipedia! We are a project dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the United States, with an emphasis on subjects with regional and national significance. This project was formed to coordinate the development of United States related articles and help maintain the United States Portal. Some project goals are to help list and categorize United States related articles, develop quality standards for articles and build templates that help users browse the articles that fall under this project. This project also provides a place for Wikipedians to share information and resources regarding improvements to United States related articles. Here, editors can ask for help with certain articles and bring otherwise overlooked articles and problems, to the attention of other editors. For more information of the role of WikiProjects, check out WikiProject guidelines.

Its been another very busy month and the momentum of the project continues to move us forward.

  • Two more projects have joined the group. WikiProject U.S. Presidents brings more than 350 key articles, approximately 34 of which being GA or better. WikiProject US State Legislatures also joined with 398 articles of which 10 are GA or better.
  • Discussions continue to include several more WikiProjects to the family of supported projects. Some of the current discussions are:
  1. WikiProject Asian Americans - This has been finalized and will be added to the Template and the family in the next few weeks
  2. WikiProject Franco-Americans - This has been finalized and will be added to the Template and the family in the next few weeks
  3. WikiProject American Old West - The discussion is located here.
  4. WikiProject South Carolina - The discussion is located here.
  5. WikiProject West Virginia - The discussion is located here.
  6. WikiProject FBI - The discussion is located here.
  7. WikiProject United States History - The discussion is located here. This has been open for a while and some members of the History project are opposed to it so this one probably will not be added to the supported projects list.
  8. WikiProject presidential elections - The discussion is located here. This has been open for a while and some members of the presidential elections project are opposed to it so this one probably will not be added to the supported projects list.
  • WikiProject Library of Congress was moved from its location on subpages under WikiProject United States to its own location to help increase its visibility. We also merged WikiProject Library of Congress country studies into WikiProject Library of Congress in order to better utilize the information on both projects. The country studies project is currently linked to the Library of Congress project but over the next few weeks the projects will be fully merged.
  • It has been suggested that WikiProject United States start using a B class assessment checklist to better identify which articles need what kind of work. That discussion can be found here
  • As of July 1 2011 WikiProject United States has Exceeded 100, 000 pieces of content. This includes 9 projects, 624+ Featured items, 61,000+ articles and 20+ portals.

Collaboration
The collaboration for July 2011 is the United States dollar

Last month we had a very successful improvement to the United States Bill of Rights article. Although we didn't achieve our goal of getting the article to meet GA requirements we made a lot of improvements to the articles.

The goal for July is to improve the article for the United States dollar. This article needs a lot of work including expansion, citations, structure, grammar and general cleanup.

There are currently three collaboration candidates for August:

  1. Historiography of the United States (if not selected it will be removed for August so this is its last chance)
  2. Democratic Party (United States) - Currently has four votes so if things stay the way they are it will be the next collaboration.
  3. Hope Diamond - Currently only has 2 votes.

Some other possibilities for future collaborations are: Camp David, White House, The Star-Spangled Banner, Space Shuttle program, Charles Lindbergh, United States Postal Service, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Great Depression in the United States.

If one of these sounds like a good candidate feel free to add it to the list of candidates.

Future improvements
  • Adding infoboxes to the articles that need them
  • Assessing the articles that need it
  • Adding the articles that are still missing
  • A major redesign of the newsletter which will make it easier to update, make it more attractive and leave a smaller footprint on the talk pages

Your welcome. If you see any more of my pages popping up please feel free to just blank them. I'm retired from editing. Jsut fyi throug, for this one I was working to make sure that the template had all the categories and to do lists and other things created but I gave up on that because I do not have access to edit protected templates and it was taking a week or more for an admin to make the change. That's is part of the reason I retired from editing. It's just becoming too hard to get anything done because so much content is protected and I am not an admin.
