No need to be so agressive. I did not see (at that time) your messages 'to stop'. I think I was thinking that it doesn't work ! One thing is sure, If I saw your messages which asked to stop changing, I would certainly stop. I'm not the kind of people you imagine.

You can do what your honesty tells you. It's not my problem. I don't ask something from you.

I see you just issued a rangeblock on a range that includes this IP. None of their edits appear to be good - should I just mass-revert all of them? Home Lander (talk) 00:32, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Home Lander: Yes, revert away. Katietalk 00:34, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Well looks like they self-reverted any that are left, so never mind! Home Lander (talk) 00:35, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Katie - this IP does not appear to be blocked but is mimicking the behavior of the other IPs. Another range? Home Lander (talk) 00:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Nice catch. On the contribs page, down at the bottom, click the geolocate link. If it comes up as Amazon and I haven't blocked it yet, bring it to me here. MusikAnimal and I are rangeblocking as fast as we can. Katietalk 01:02, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks so much. Will report if I see any more. Home Lander (talk) 01:03, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

71.2.102.191 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is blocked but the range does not appear to be, and it is mimicking behavior and tripping appropriate filters. Home Lander (talk) 01:23, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Multiple IPs tripping "Derp vandal" filters at the Special:AbuseLog. Home Lander (talk) 01:28, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Talkback

Hello, KrakatoaKatie. You have new messages at Alexf's talk page.

This appears to be a proxy so would like your input here. Twice I broke up his whole page (and spawned many unnecessary mentions) by fouling up the template for your username! Home Lander (talk) 22:56, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Question

I suspect Simon Whistler to be a Sock puppet of user Sonphan99 or the user Sonphan1 because of his wording [here] and his contributions. I saw that you were a checkuser so I brought it to you so that I didn't make a false sock puppet investigation without there truly needing to be one. Could you possibly check this out? It's very suspicious and he has also been putting up fake block notices like [this] (which I have warned him about). ♠Dinah♠ 🎤 23:42, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Sorry you probably know of that because it was on your talk page... All the more reason I asked you. ♠Dinah♠ 🎤 23:44, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Amazon Rangeblocks

Don't know if you have seen it yet or not, but those edits seem to be coming from ranges that had recently expired blocks. That might help if you haven't seen it yet. — nihlus kryik  (talk) 00:36, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Nihlus Kryik: That's a huge help. Thank you so much! Katietalk 01:26, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Holy shit. Yeah, and thank you User:Timotheus Canens. Drmies (talk) 01:28, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, we probably should use their latest published list of ranges when renewing the block. In fact, this sounds like the task for a bot... T. Canens (talk) 03:54, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Pinging slakr: [1]. — nihlus kryik  (talk) 04:02, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Nihlus Kryik, Timotheus Canens, and Drmies: I've aggregated the api's ranges (i.e., combined overlapping/adjacent) and split them into blockable 16s, where applicable, though the ipv6 limit might be different (I think the default limit is /19, but wikimedia might have a different mw config; we'd find out soon enough :P):

I can mass-block with more or less a couple of clicks or you guys can do it. Regardless, thought I'd drop it here for review/double-check. I'd suggest 5 years, given the monolithic stability of AWS and the relative guarantees surrounding elastic ips; if anything, they'll likely only add ranges, not remove them. I dunno if we truly need a dedicated bot to deal with likely-infrequent additions, but *shrug*. As far as spillover, botflagged accounts already have ipblock-exempt, but we might, as usual, get a couple of IPBE requests from legit users whose infrastructure includes a VPN to one of their organization's VPCs, though this realistically shouldn't be a frequent issue—most companies simply aren't that advanced. Cheers =) --slakrtalk / 23:22, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

  • I certainly can't do it in a couple of clicks, so I agree – go for it with five-year blocks. I thought the limit for IPv6 was a /32, but I could have missed something somewhere. I thought a bot similar to ProcseeBot would be a good idea to periodically take that AWS list, see if that range is blocked, and whack it if it isn't. Although the additions may be infrequent, they're ripe for abuse when they occur and much easier (imho) for someone to find than searching for open proxies. Katietalk 03:01, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
  • It is happening again. MusikAnimal has blocked a few too. Drmies (talk) 03:30, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
It never stopped :/ Also I really think we should be chatting over email, or somewhere not public MusikAnimal talk 03:47, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
So most of them should now be blocked. I didn't override any existing blocks in case they were checkuser-blocked or have some other special significance related to past abuse (or that individually needed talk-page/email blocking(?)), but randomly sampling them gives us like 2-3 years, expiry-wise, before we should loop back around for them. If we're not as worried about that and want to go ahead and harmonize the expiries, I could totally do that, too.

I thought a bot similar to ProcseeBot would be a good idea to periodically take that AWS list, see if that range is blocked, and whack it if it isn't.

I'd support it, but I'd have to squeeze in some time (already low on that :P) if I were to do it myself. This run just seemed like a thing I could do quickly with the stuff I already had / stuff I already knew was acceptably reliable. The good thing about AWS is that you don't get to just choose your allocation, so even if a new block opens up, it's still a matter of rolling the dice quite a few times to get an allocation in it; my guess is more that prior abuse was spread across most of their existing allocations for various availability zones that it just seemed, to those dealing with the abuse most heavily, that "new" blocks were opening, even if they've been there for a while.

Although the additions may be infrequent, they're ripe for abuse when they occur and much easier (imho) for someone to find than searching for open proxies.

This is true, and the danger probably isn't as much in just open proxies hosted there as it's also in...other...approaches. Like others have said, probably best not to de facto publicly post a how-to, but suffice it to say AWS is realistically treatable as an open proxy. :P

    Just imagine your admin count

That was thoroughly obliterated long ago when I was running ProcseeBot's blocks under my main account as an emergency measure (I vividly remember the Winter of the Proxies and would never wish that upon us again). :P

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best man (or woman) win! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Technical news

  • You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
  • In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

Arbitration

  • Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.

Please help re-publish my page

Hello Katie,

I had my Wikipedia page written up through your business partners from Wikipedia Writers dot com and they've just informed me that you guys had ran into some issues and you're the administrator who has access to the article.

Can I please request that you re-publish my Wiki page as I'm about to release a number of new press releases for my new music and was going to ask for the page to be updated? Appreciate your urgent support in this matter.

Many thanks and kind regards, Shuja

(talk page watcher) Hello, 86.97.153.198. I'm afraid I've got some bad news: 'Wikipedia Writers dot com' are not our business partners, they are a black hat firm who are constantly, deliberately, and persistently in breach of Wikipedia's terms of use. They are thus the kind of thing that respectable companies and individuals steer well clear of. If you paid for their services, I afraid you have probably been had. And that's not even considering why the article was deleted in the first lace- was it by any chance promoting you band? I'm very sorry to break this to you, but there's no nice way of explaining the harm that sites like that do- to you and Wikipedia! Pinging @TonyBallioni and Kudpung: while I'm at it. Sorry to intrude, KK. — fortunavelut luna 15:58, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Restor deleted page

Good Evening, I created a page in an athlete Curt Minard. He is a National Canadian athlete in two winter sports. The page has been deleted and I am requesting that it please be restored. Thanking you in advance. Heidi

@Hjohnson78: I'm sorry, but I will not restore this page. It was deleted for your own safety. Please read WP:LTA/OM and consider yourself fortunate that you were not extorted or blackmailed to maintain this page. If you like, you can use the blue button at the top of your sandbox page to submit it for review, but I suggest you clean it up and remove the promotional tone first. Katietalk 03:09, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Can you please Put the original article in my sandbox and I will fix it from there. Thanking you in advance. Heidi Hjohnson78 (talk) 16:40, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

No. Please reread what I wrote. Katietalk 12:38, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Restoring page for Brant Pinvidic

Hello Katie,

I’m writing to inquire about the reinstatement of a Wikipedia page. I noticed that the page for Brant Pinvidic (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Brant_Pinvidic) had been flagged and removed due to a problem with a user. Would you mind letting me know what the process is to go ahead and get the page restored?

Thanks!

Hi Katie-

I hope you are having a fantastic labor day weekend! In this current state our country is in everyone deserves a little relaxing time away from the barrage of chaos :)

I'm writing you in regards to a page for musician Lawrence Rothman. Is it possible to restore this page? He is a professional musician signed to Interscope Records- feel free to google him.

Below is a link to the deleted page.

I appreciate your help and you taking the time to read this.

Kind Regards! Damon

TB

Sorry about that, I didn't actually see the topic ban until after the 2nd edit. I guess there's no software enforcement to restrict which space I edit in ... I assumed that it would be a block of some kind. Questions:

  • Does this ban extend to the entire WP: space? (which in my eyes seems punitive, because I do work in project pages, where there's not been an issue, and at AFD where I think I've worked well for a couple of year).
  • As you've surely noticed, I was in the middle of writing a counter proposal. I thought I could offer something that would keep everyone happy enough to avoid an appeal, and an editor suggested I ask for closure - so I thought I'd have the chance to accept a TB which dealt with the actual issue, and didn't have as much collateral damage.
  • So what do I do now? Can I appeal directly to ANI? Or do I have to resort to Arbcom - which seems rather a large hammer, for quite frankly, a small nail. I can't accept a block that is so broad, when the problem is narrow. Is there an in-between process? If it's off to a different forum, then just hat or delete my counter proposal.
  • I think you nailed consensus on the boomerang - though I find the the lack of interest in pillar violation by ANI troubling, when I've been jammed up on a poorly worded, not particularly accessible guideline, that I actually'd not seen before, and quickly removed the offending text.
  • Jays are going to take the pennant.
  • Sorry for the questions. I'm actually not that familiar with this type of topic ban; normally they for a mainspace issue, or much more targeted. I've looked around ... but if there's a page somewhere on how topic bans for particular namespsaces work, just point me to it.

Thanks, Nfitz (talk) 02:10, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Xdeluna

Thanks for your check. I've noticed that the articles which this editor hits are absolutely infested by sketchy IPs and SPAs. For instance, I've just blocked 41.218.219.179 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)) and 86.223.141.81 (talk+ · tag · contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · proxy check · block user · block log · cross-wiki contribs · CheckUser (log)) as proxies. Would you recommend any standard operating procedure for dealing with this case? Best, GABgab 21:41, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@GeneralizationsAreBad: Sadly, no ideas, except possibly an edit filter, but I think we need more data. Hardblock the proxies on sight, and we'll just have to play whack-a-mole for a while. Great work this week – thanks a bunch. :-) Katietalk 02:29, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

How to act in these situations?

Hi Katie. How do you suggest I approach a WP:DUCK situation? I've come across three accounts that are undoubtedly in cahoots with each other, and opening and SPI would be a waste of time IMO. The accounts are: Marygril, Marysupergril, and Marylucygril. I don't want to hit them with a sock puppetry block unless I know that that's the right action. Cheers, Anarchyte (work | talk) 13:26, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Anarchyte: I don't see anything wrong with blocking them. You could always just indef the socks and warn the master (Marylucygril) not to sock. GABgab 15:19, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
@Anarchyte: What GAB said. Determine the oldest account (the master) and block it for a couple of weeks, and block the socks indefinitely. Katietalk 18:14, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, both of you. I've done as suggested Anarchyte (work | talk) 01:14, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Repeated failed log-in attempts

Hi Katie- Thanks for weighing in at IP address of unknown device (can't find the interwiki shortcut for Mediawiki!). Half FYI, half question re whether there's anything I should do: I continue to get notices at least every other day that there have been multiple failed log-in attempts on my account. These come from en, fr, de, and commons. Unless this is the system reiterating the same notifications (I've been marking them read as they come up), it seems that someone is making an ongoing effort to log in to my account. Do you have any thoughts on this? I usurped my username a few years ago, but I doubt this issue is related to that as no one had any issue with it. Thanks in advance for any input. Eric talk 15:43, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

@Eric: See mw:Help:Login notifications. Did you unsuccessfully attempt to login to your account yourself? If not, indeed, someone is trying to get in. So long as your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia, you have nothing to worry about. You can disable the notifications in your preferences. However you might consider opting in to get an email where there is a "Login from an unfamiliar device" (same for you, Katie!). That will let you know when your account has actually been compromised -- but again, if you have a secure password, you should not need to worry. Also note your own logins are counted for. So if you login from a new device, don't freak out when you get an email :) Hope this helps MusikAnimal talk 13:30, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, MusikAnimal! No unsuccessful logins from me. I've been getting notifications every couple days for several weeks now. Not worried about it, just wondering if there was anything I should do. Cheers, Eric talk 02:04, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

ConsumersDistributingonline

A few massive sleeper farms ago you mentioned you could implement a range block for Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ConsumersDistributingonline but were reluctant due to collateral. I think you might be away, but if you could take a look at the SPI's archive from today I think you might want to reconsider. Cheers! Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 17:43, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

@Ivanvector: Done. Found two more during the check and that put it over the edge for me. Katietalk 22:05, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Greetings, I hope that you enjoyed your holiday and that you have come back reinvigorated. I realise that your will have a backlog of tasks but I would appreciate a reply to my query at this UTRS case, at your convenience, since it is quite old now.
