Combined techniques: slashes and hypens

Dear Kermit, I think that the IUPAC (and other terminology recommendations) for hyphenated techniques should be used consistently: GC/MS, LC/MS, MS/MS... instead of GC-MS, LC-MS, etc. Regards, JF Gal —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.59.1.31 (talk) 09:29, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree that there should be a consistent use; currently there are about the same number of GC/MS as GC-MS occurrences. In Wikipedia, there is the additional possibility for confusion since slashes can indicate a sub page. --Kkmurray (talk) 15:12, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Canadian Journal of Chemistry cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Canadian Journal of Chemistry cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:46, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Mass spectrometry

Hi Kermit, I notice you have done a lot of work on mass spectrometry-related articles and I thank you for that. I was wondering if WikiProject Mass spectrometry is still active. I ask because I recently did an overhaul of the mass chromatogram article and noticed there were a lot of non-pertinant redirects to it, e.g. single ion monitoring, selected reaction monitoring, multiple reaction monitoring. Those are pretty fundamental mass spectrometry techniques and should have their own article. I would like to help with this as much as possible. Thanks. -Cwenger (talk) 18:02, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I have all the MS articles in my watchlist, but lately haven't been doing much more than keeping my eye on things. Nice work on mass chromatogram; you should consider uploading the images to Wikimedia Commons so that they can be used in other projects. --Kkmurray (talk) 21:36, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

TREK73

Hello, I assume you're the same Murray who designed the TREK73 website. Bravo! And thanks for creating and defending the WP page against AfDs. I think it would improve the article if we had a scan of some original teletype gameplay, and maybe even a pic of a HP2000 like this [1][2]. I would do it, but it would fall under Fair Use, I wonder if you could upload under a free license. LionelT (talk) 19:34, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Maybe a capture of the DOS version output. Sadly, the shoebox of teletype rolls my brother and I accumulated was thrown out years ago. His strategy was to drop all shields and use the extra power to run backwards at warp 9 and lob probes and torpedoes into the now bunched up enemy ships. If you did that just right, you could get a chain reaction going as the ships self destructed. A few of those games would give you a 30 foot scroll of Teletype paper. --Kkmurray (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

An editor has nominated Begin (computer game), an article reletaed to Trek73, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Begin (computer game) (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. LionelT (talk) 20:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Be careful with your warnings on IP user pages

Hi Murray, yesterday you flagged this removal [3] of Cats and Dogs from Analytical chemistry as vandalism by IP 82.41.26.17 despite the edit summary stating that they were reverting vandalism. Though you also subsequently warned the true offending editor at 96.46.214.90, you did not revert the warning/ or correct the innocent editor's user talk page [4]. Please be careful when warning users that their good faithed edits are non helpful, If you do not object Ive removed the warning for the time being. Thank youOttawa4ever (talk) 08:07, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Just for clarifications, I had been notified of this edit before logging on this morning, as a new message. Ottawa4ever (talk) 16:05, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
The problem was that IP 82.41.26.17 didn't replace the content that the obvious vandal 96.46.214.90 had removed. The definition "Analytical chemistry is the study of the separation, identification, and quantification of the chemical components of natural and artificial materials." became "Analytical chemistry is the study of the chemical components of natural and artificial materials" which would be difficult to catch without a close look. I restored the content left out by 82.41.26.17 and indicated in the edit summary that deleted content was restored and left the message with "It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content" on the 82.41.26.17 talk page. It seemed friendly enough at the time, so I left it stand with no additional comment. I also left a vandalism warning on the talk page of 96.46.214.90. In retrospect, I was remiss in not taking more time to point out exactly what 82.41.26.17 had done in error. Thanks for the reminder to take the time to be friendly. --Kkmurray (talk) 03:32, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:FEBS Journal cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. Kehrli new POV dispute

I have already contacted the previous mediators but have not requested an amendment. Unfortunately, I will not be able to spend much time on this anytime soon. I would like to mediate this case. From the page it appears that all parties wish to proceed in this route and that mediation is the right step. Is this correct? Cheers, Lord Roem (talk) 06:27, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it seems that all parties wish to proceed. --Kkmurray (talk) 14:19, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
The other two parties appear out right now. However, if you are 'on' right now, it would be great if you could write the first statement on the talk page. I am asking all parties to explain possible areas of agreement (even if small things) and the main thrust of the argument. In other words, what's the one 'question' that if answered provides the resolution to the dispute? Cheers, Lord Roem (talk) 21:30, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Autopatrolled

Hello, this is just to let you know that I have granted you the "autopatrolled" permission. This won't affect your editing, it just automatically marks any page you create as patrolled, benefiting new page patrollers. Please remember:

  • This permission does not give you any special status or authority
  • Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
  • You may wish to display the {{Autopatrolled}} top icon and/or the {{User wikipedia/autopatrolled}} userbox on your user page
  • If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it
If you have any questions about the permission, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, happy editing! Acalamari 21:33, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Displacement chromatography

Back in January 2009 you noted the resemblance of some material in Displacement chromatography to a magazine article on the same subject. The material is still there, unreferenced. Kendrick mass scale

Hello. Re: Reverted good faith edits by Wtshymanski (talk); This is currently under discussion at ArbCom. (TW)) (undo) Where is this being discussed? More importantly, why? Surely a little editing is all that is required, hardly seems to be something to take up arbitration time. --Wtshymanski (talk) 20:33, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Here: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Kehrli 2. The Kendrick mass scale move is also problematic and should be discussed. --Kkmurray (talk) 21:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
I see there is long-term insanity at work here, and so, since this is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, we'll continue to have the content fork for a long time yet. It's a pity that this straightforward description of a neat chemist's hack is now wasting so much time and mental effort. How is this a dispute? Call it what the references call it... --Wtshymanski (talk) 22:09, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
It is an interesting case illustrating POV and sourcing issues in scientific articles and shows some of the difficulties that Wikipedia seems to have with low traffic technical articles. I am hoping that it will be possible to resolve the content fork before the end of the month. The article is fine for now at Kendrick mass scale, but there will need to be some cleanup at some point - soon hopefully. --Kkmurray (talk) 22:26, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

An arbitration case regarding Kehrli (talk · contribs) has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedy has been enacted:

  • Usually requests for enforcing arbitration cases (like that above) are made at WP:AE because of the stage in dispute resolution it has passed (rather than ANI where disputes prior to arbitration can often turn up). 'Vandalism'

I'm sorry you interpreted my actions as 'vandalism'. I think that's a bit harsh, especially as you appear to have adopted at least one of my suggestions. They were not intended to be construed as vandalism. The text when I came to it this afternoon (its ~18:40 here in UK at present) did not make sense. So I tried to make sense of it. And then realised that in fact there is a complete sine wave from the centre to the rim in ALL directions within the equatorial plane. I'll be happy to discuss this with you, and possibly learn from you, as I suspect you know a lot about this but that the article does not completely reflect your degree of knowledge. I don't mind correction, and your links might be helpful, but I cannot fix the problem, if I don't know what the problems are. Kindly regards, Eric Eric.handberg (talk) 01:08, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mixed-mode chromatography, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Stationary phase (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). You are correct, in addition to vandalism,[10] I should have flagged you for adding unsourced statements[11] and advertising your Facebook page[12]. I'm sure that the BHAA appreciates sourced information and also that the method for critiquing the Social Secretary's remarks (we called them the "excrements") during your time at Bowles may not be the same as that in evidence at other times. Please see WP:5P for information on how to contribute more effectively to Wikipedia. --Kkmurray (talk) 16:01, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Anode ray image

Hello, I am doing a bit of editing at Anode ray where you have donated a diagram. I do not understand why it shows only a single disk of visible emission on the anode side of the grid, whereas both notionally and in actual images, the whole space before the grid is luminescent. I would like to do either an edit of the image or replace the image accordingly, but would prefer first to ensure that you had no special intention that I overlooked in the image as it stands. Any comments or preferences please? JonRichfield (talk) 11:30, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Go ahead and edit to add that detail (or replace). --Kkmurray (talk) 17:18, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi again. I have been messing around with Gimp and have produced two candidates. You can see them at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/JonRichfield (says he hopefully) I had one go at tarting up the original (yours, not Thompsons!) and one at producing a notional view from a photo that you provided. I prefer the latter myself, but do you have any opinions? Cheers, JonRichfield (talk) 14:09, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Kkmurray, I agree that the collection of links on Interactome was growing unwieldy. photoionization mode

Two questions please Sir:

1. Can you please explain why my introduction to https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Photoionization_mode was deleted? I added that 2-sentence introduction in response to this: "This article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject. (October 2009)"

2. Also, can I please propose we remove the {{transcludes}} from this page since I have added many links and believe this page is both professional and otherwise acceptable and useful, and imho these transcludes are now addressed, or wrong.

But I do want your honest feedback on this and respect your decisions here.

I removed an improper lead sentence here: [15] - please see WP:BEGIN. I removed the rest of the opening paragraph because it was identical to a paragraph on page 7 of Mass Spectrometry of Nucleosides and Nucleic Acids. and a copyright violation. Fish and moth categories

Hi, Kkmurray. I've seen the speedy deletion notices on @NotWith:'s talk page. I'm curious, though -- the deletion discussions you point to did not specifically discuss these categories (e.g. Category:Moths of Argentina) and the deletion rationale seemed specific to Europe. Further, these categories didn't exist prior to the deletion discussion and while it is part of a larger objectionable behavior on NotWith's part (I, for one, don't agree the categories are not defining, but don't prefer to see them broken down by taxa like this and instead prefer "Fauna of Argentina"), it wouldn't be a candidate for speedy deletion under WP:G4. The proper route would be another deletion discussion and if, as seems to be the wider concern, a discussion of user conduct regarding NotWith's category creation. I'm also pinging @Randykitty: as the deleting admin. Thoughts, all? Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 22:06, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Kkmurray, I agree with Rkitko that CSD doesn't appear valid - the CFDs you refer to (e.g. Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2014_March_16#Category:Moths_of_Andorra) are specifically for European countries so "has been previously deleted" doesn't apply. Were there any articles (including lists) in the categories ? DexDor (talk) 22:22, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
OK. I guess they will all have to go through CFD. Thanks for the quick feedback. I'm now more clear on how CSD G4 applies to previous broad CSDs. --Kkmurray (talk) 23:28, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

I'd initially deleted health care analytics but I ended up restoring it and only deleting the portions that contained copyright violations.
