Silver Fish

[edit]

Interesting article. Could you clarify...is this a UK award, worldwide, WAGGGS award, or just what is the scope of the award and put it in the article. Tks. Rlevse 02:37, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'm afraid the information I've given represents all that I reliably know about the award at the moment. The award is international in character as the recipients I've listed work or worked in the movement in variety of countries, but I don't know who is currently the awarding body. I'll add an appeal for this information to the article's talk page.Kingbird 14:40, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]
Updated DYK query On 28 September, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Silver Fish, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Congrats on the DYK. I have one on the DYK today too--Harry Brinkley Bass, who's a MILHIST and SCOUTING project effort, which I wrote and nom'd. Two from one project can't happen too often. Thanks for helping with the project!Rlevse 01:16, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting articles

[edit]

Hi. I need a GG/GS expert and hope you can help. We've long wanted to get the Boy Scout and GG/GS articles structured the same. I've started on this. See the Project talk page. Can you help get Girl Guide and Girl Scout more in line with Boy Scout? Also, do you know the best place to move the country-specific info I've put on the Girl Guide and Girl Scout talk page? Thanks. Rlevse 20:20, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've made a start by moving the UK specific material from the talk page, as you can see. It's going to take a while to get the information into appropriate sections and fill in some of the more glaring gaps, particularly as I just said I'd put up some articles about Girlguiding UK's regions, but I'm on the case, even if it's slow! Kingbird 17:33, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. Rlevse 17:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two suggestions

[edit]

Hi. I've come up with two suggestions in the rename discussion. I'd like to know what you think of them. See that thread. Rlevse 10:20, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for dropping by to give me this message personally. I'll have a look into the things you're proposing, because at the moment I've no idea what a subproject or a taskforce involve, and then put my thoughts into the discussion. Kingbird 16:15, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A subproject is simply a project that falls under the parent project, like if you had a trains project and Brit trains subproject. The subproject could have its own templates and everything. A taskforce is a group of people on a project who share a common interest in a certain area; like on the MILHIST project they have a WWI taskforce, WWII taskforce, etc. They have special captions on the project tag too. This is a short description of them. Hope it helps. Darthgriz98 may be correct in that there are not enough females in the project to support a subproject--the maintenance on a project is fairly high--for us, I do the vast majority of it. I think that if you are interested in one of these two options, the taskforce would be a better way to go. The taskforce would keep the bonds of "every scout/guide/rover are all part of the same movement" stronger too, I feel. Just my opinion.Rlevse 17:02, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See the Signpost entry on the inviting participation subthread. Rlevse 22:48, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

[edit]

I appreciate that, and I also want to thank you for your edits and contributions. I have so wanted to see the feminine side of the project flourish, and if you check my edits about six months ago, I was begging anyone who even mentioned that they had been involved to please help add info, for instance the section in each US state article, to little success. Thank you, and you really need not apologize. I am a scholar of the rebirth of the movement in postSoviet countries, and have observed that the girls are more robust and sincere about it than their boy counterparts, even in mixed organizations. In Slovakia, for instance, they used to have to make every badge they earned as part of their program. The girls had these beautiful complete uniforms, proud of the badges they sewed themselves, and the guys were empty. The young ladies were living into the vision, and if my own nation's program has forgotten what that vision is, it is not reflected in the programs of the rest of the world. I know not to judge all by what happens here, and I have seen true Guiding and Scouting in action better than I could have done at that age. Out in the real world "Girl Scout" is not just a modifier before "cookies". I wish I could provide more info on each of the smaller organizations, and I hope I in turn did not upset that I stuck the stub information into the boy articles to have a chance to grow before they split off. You have a great day, sister! Your brother in B-P, Chris 18:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Taskforce

[edit]

You seemed interested in the taskforce. Do you want me to set up the pages and tags for it? You and Darthgriz98 are by far the most active women in the project. There are a couple of others that appear from time to time. Rlevse 16:30, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, User:Darthgriz98 says she'd love to have a GG/GS taskforce. Rlevse 23:35, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I am interested in a GG/GS taskforce if there are others with me. As there are others, then I think we should go ahead. As I have no experience in setting up a lot of the things that might be needed, then I would be grateful for your work in setting up the taskforce.
I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get to this message. My ISP is having a major problem with its optical fibre link to the outside world. If you don't hear from me again for a few days, it's not that I'm not interested, I just can't get on the internet. Kingbird 18:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll let Griz know and do the work for you. Thanks for your interest. Rlevse 20:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Think of a name. If you name it WAGGGS, it won't cover non-WAGGGS orgs. Perhaps "Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting" task force. Rlevse 20:15, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Howdy, looking forward to getting this taskforce started, just after I'm done with finals and you get internet ^_^Darthgriz98 20:28, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
May I join you in this taskforce? --jergen 09:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to have you on board. Well done for the huge amount of work you've put in to get more of the women's organisations separate articles. Kingbird 16:32, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting" taskforce works for me. It's straightforward and obvious, and that's good. Anyone else want to comment? Kingbird 16:42, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your task force name is a red link in the new project navigation pane as I am waiting to know for sure what you want to name the task force. Let me know when you want me to ahead and create the page with whatever name. Rlevse 19:14, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kingbird--would you like to be the TF coordinator? Rlevse 23:34, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would be terrified to be the TF coordinator, but I'll do it! It took me a day or two to decide. You'll have to give me some pointers as to the jobs I should make sure are done. Regarding the TF name, I suggest waiting until the weekend has elapsed and then going ahead with "Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting" if no-one has an alternative. Kingbird 16:42, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As no one has objected to the name or Kingbird being the TF coordinator, I've creating this. See the the TF talk page and main page (on the project navigation pane. Can you create a quick stub to get rid of the redlink Ranger Guide in the Scouting article? I don't know anything about them, except this: [1]. Rlevse 00:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I've created something quick for the time being - it's at Ranger (Girl Guide). I'll try to get back and improve it at some point. Kingbird 16:24, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, thanks. PS, you may want to copy your Barnstar to your main user page. It was well-deserved! Rlevse 16:26, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GG/GS task force

[edit]

Hey I made a userbox for the GG/GS taskforce to help us network with other members, if you want to check it out it's on the task force talk page. Let me know what you think, when you get back from your break of course. Take it easy, Darthgriz98 04:34, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Darthgriz! A userbox is a helpful addition to the task force. I'll put it on my page right away. I also saw your message about the Studio 2B page. I recently bought some Studio 2B resources so I may be able to help out in the future. Kingbird 20:54, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya, I noticed that you have done some minor editing on the group's article... just to let you know that ths article is in the process of being merged with Scouting in Greater Glasgow and will be replaced with a simple redirect to the Area's article in a few days unless there are any major objections listed in the discussion... You're quick! It's all fixed now. The longer tag went into a reference further up the page that I was sorting when you dropped me the message. No worries. Kingbird 21:20, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Two questions--I know Olave became Chief Guide in 1930 and lived to about 1977. At what point did she cease being World Chief Guide? Also, if I may ask, I know you said you are British but now live elsewhere. In what country do you live? Just curious. Rlevse 01:24, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Olave B-P has never stopped being World Chief Guide despite being, as you said, dead. There's never been another. Just like B-P being World Chief Scout. As for myself, I live in Puerto Rico, where kingbirds sit on the telephone wires outside my home, dashing to and fro catching insects. Kingbird 17:36, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

EJO and DFB

[edit]

Notice you've added scouting template to Elsie J. Oxenham, which is great, and I can let you have more info on her references to Guiding (and Camp Fire) if you're interested. Does Girls Guildry come within your remit? If it does, Dorita Fairlie Bruce includes it, especially in her 'Nancy' Series. I hesitate to add the template myself as I'm not sure if Guildry 'counts'...??--Abbeybufo 20:24, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Sorry I've been away and haven't had an opportunity to reply. Whether Girls' Guildry is covered by the Scouting Wikiproject or not is a bit of a vexed question! The Scouting Wikiproject definitions say yes, but Girls' Guildry became the Girls' Brigade in the '60s, and recent editors on the Girls' Brigade page have not wanted the article to carry the Scouting Wikiproject tags. Now you have given me this information about the 'Nancy' series, I'm going to mention it on DFB's page and put all the Scouting tags on her page. If anyone really objects, they can be taken off. Now that I think of it, some of this information about EJO's and DFB's books might fit in at Scouting in popular culture. I'll see what looks right. Kingbird 15:16, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No prob - I could see you were on a wikibreak so put your page on watch until you came back (also lifted the code to be able to put myself on a break aome time in the summer - thanks!). Nancy is actually in GG and rises through such ranks as there are (I'm afraid I don't possess the books in this series & can't check the terminology, but have read them a while ago and so this is from memory). In the Dimsie books one of the original girls in the 'Anti-Soppists League' founds a GG group in the village near 'Jane's' - the school that is the main setting for the earlier books in the series - and the younger girls in the school think of schemes to help the Guildry group buy a piano. Can let you have a list of the EJO books that include Guides and or Camp Fire if you like. All the best, Abbeybufo (talk) • (contribs) 21:19, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Have added a few more EJO titles to the list on the Scouting in popular culture page, as requested, and removed one (Abbey Champion) that has no guiding or Camp Fire. The ones listed are the main titles where GG or CF are a major part of the story, but either/both are mentioned in several other titles, too. One or two of the ones I've left on the Scouting page are borderline, so if when you come back from your current wikibreak you want the list pruned down, I can take them off - Abbeybufo (talk) • (contribs) 14:11, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, the Scout Association of Malawi is in the news here. You'll want to post this at Wikipedia:Requested moves and follow the guidelines there. Thank you for mentioning me. I enjoy reading the international Scouting and Guiding news and contributing to the column. I can get disheartened when I see so few people contributing to the portal, and I hope more will come forward as a result of your remarks. Kingbird (talk) 06:00, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We might want to define the scope of the Scouting news page so editors will understand the type of stuff we are looking for. Here are a couple of possibilities:

--— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 00:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it's taken me a little while to get back to you. I know what criteria I use to select stories, should I say something on the news talk page?. It's not foolproof, but I haven't received any complaints. I have no idea if this is because very few people read the column, whether they are glad someone is doing it and don't want to frighten me off by making criticisms, or if I'm getting it right most of the time. (Treat that as rhetorical if you like.) As there are very few other contributions, I tend not to object to them even if I wouldn't have included them myself. I have my own biases, I know. Kingbird (talk) 21:15, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would certainly be interested in your insight here. Just found another potential source: http://www.scoutingnews.org/ --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 22:14, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kingbird you did a fine job, and it's not original research if you extract it from different sources. No need to apologize to Mewnews, don't feed the trolls. No amount of reason gets through to some. The article adequately portrays both viewpoints, Mewnews just wants to be contentious at this point. Think you can get this to GA status? Our Girl Scout/Guide articles are much weaker than the boy side of things. RlevseTalk 20:53, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't feel there's much I can add to what's already there. I wish all the World Centre articles were really good. They're such important places and something common to every Guide and Girl Scout. If only every one had an article as good as the Our Chalet article! You did an excellent job back in late 2006/early 2007 giving it a quality start. If you can think of something specific that I can do to improve the article, then please do suggest it. Otherwise, I think I would be more likely to try and improve the other World Centre articles than work on Our Chalet at the moment. Kingbird (talk) 04:21, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Moisés Fragela requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ←Signed:→Mr. E. Scout news

[edit]

Wow. I just noticed no one has added any Scout news to the portal since Dec. Do you know of any? RlevseTalk 23:09, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Haven't had a lot of time to look in the last few months, but on the occasions I have looked, there hasn't been anything I judged worth putting on the portal. I haven't looked around for several weeks, but I've got a little time today, so I'll check my regular sources. Kingbird (talk) 21:29, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Britannia Park (Girl Guides Victoria)

[edit]

I find it difficult to see that this campsite is notable enough for its own article. Articles on Gilwell Park, Victoria and Mafeking Rover Park were both merged back into Scouting in Victoria, although the latter is currently in Rovering in Victoria. Mafeking Rover Park in particular could be noticed independently of Scouting through Motorsport, although I'm not sure we have those references. However, if we can expand Scouting in Victoria as Scouting and Guiding in Victoria, as you have supported, maybe we could merge the material there. It is good to see you working on Guiding articles in Australia. I do not think we have a single Australian editor interested in Guiding. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:29, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's my intention to add some more to the Britannia Park article. However, I admit that notability could be a problem and that merging into Scouting and Guiding in Victoria would be a good solution if general opinion was against keeping the article. Regarding Australian Guiding articles is general, I am hoping to commit some time to them in early May. This would mostly be re-writing what's already available online, but hopefully will progress the subject. Kingbird (talk) 02:41, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is great. I will try to rename the State and Territory articles and add the structure for Guiding material. Perhaps you could then expand it. --Bduke (Discussion) 07:17, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What do you now think about merging Britannia Park (Girl Guides Victoria) to Scouting and Guiding in Victoria? There is a lot to merge and it may give undue weight. --Bduke (Discussion) 04:15, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am now not supportive of a merger, for the reasons you mention. However, if someone got tough about independent sources as a criterion for notability, we could struggle. There's only one independent source at the moment. When I started the article I though more sources about the park would become available in the forseeable future because of the Australian Centenary Event next year. This event has now been moved to another place, so my hope is no longer likely to be fulfilled. Realistically, I think notability probably won't be challenged as there is more than one source for the article, numerous references and a reasonable amount of material. Since you have, quite rightly, revived this issue, I'll leave a (shorter) comment in the merger discussion. Kingbird (talk) 00:46, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree entirely. Let us leave it as and see how it goes. --Bduke (Discussion) 01:54, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

News

[edit]

Can you rustle up some Scout News for us? BSA was supposed to have had its 2 millionth Eagle Scout in March but no one has heard if it actually occurred yet. RlevseTalk 00:13, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll get on the case! Kingbird (talk) 22:20, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the 2 millionth Eagle Scout, this site is saying May, so we shouldn't have to wait much longer. Kingbird (talk) 23:47, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Girl Guide photo

[edit]

Hey: See [4], I chose that as the pic of the month. Can you or someone you know provide more detail on it? I think they are British Girls, but not sure. Anything will help.RlevseTalk 00:48, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I need to look in a book or two before I could make a comment, although I have a few ideas. I've got limited access to the internet at the moment, so it might be a week before you hear anything from me. Kingbird (talk) 01:47, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've made comparisons with other photos from that period and done a bit of reading and this is what I can say about the picture. Are the girls British? Probably. The uniforms look like British uniforms, but I don't know what girls from other Commonwealth countries looked like and they may have been similar. The magazine that this picture came from was for international distribution, so there is no pressing need for them to be from Britain. Proceeding on the assumption that they are British, I can then make some other comments. The girls' blouses were blue. Every girl at this period wore a lanyard, regardless of position. This was to change in the next few years and in the 1920s (until the mid-1960s) they were only worn by Patrol Leaders and Patrol Seconds. The stars sewn of the left breast pocket indicated how many years a girl had been a Guide. The circular badge above the left pocket is the patrol emblem. I cannot explain why all the girls in the photo don't have them. The girl slightly left of centre is wearing a haversack - that's what the broad strips of fabric coming over her shoulders are. It's not clear to me whether these girls are wearing ties or neckerchiefs. On the whole I'm tending towards the former, which would have been yellow. I can't track down any really helpful sources on this aspect of the picture. The most striking part of the photograph, and the thing I noticed as soon as I saw it, is the lack of hats. Hats, along with staves, haversacks and lanyards were important to the earliest girls involved in Scouting, as a part of authentic Scouting. When Guiding was established it kept these elements, but their presence gradually diminished. Pictures of Guides from this period usually include hats - large ones. Finally, in this period, Rangers were just starting, and their uniform was very similar. It's possible that these girls are Rangers - I won't be able to tell.
Given the uncertainties I have expressed, I'm not sure how much of this information should be transfered to the Portal. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to deal with the matter any further today. I will put something on the portal when I next get a chance, or if you want something quicker, you are at liberty to extract some comments from what I've written here and I will review it when I'm next logged in. Kingbird (talk) 02:54, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'd rather you do it since you're way more knowledgeable on this than I am. RlevseTalk 10:15, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

United Kingdom outlying Guiding

[edit]

I've created stubs for the eight remaining outer branches, please help if you can with images and info, thanks!

Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:15, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good work, Chris. I am coming in here because the two of you may want to comment. I suggest that some of these should be merged. For example, Saint Helena branch of Girlguiding UK could be merged into Scouting and Guiding on Saint Helena and Ascension Island and Turks and Caicos Islands branch of Girlguiding UK could be merged into Scouting and Guiding in the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are no separate Scouting articles. These Scouting and Guiding groups are small. One article for everything S & G on the Islands would suffice with likely never a need to fork anything out. It is difficult to establish notability. Let us think about these two first. --Bduke (Discussion) 08:40, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brian, I'm with you, stepping back and looking at it. Shall I merge-tag them or should we just merge them in-house? Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:47, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Let us see what out hostess here, Kingbird, thinks. Falkland Islands branch of Girlguiding UK is in the same state. The others have a cat with three entries, basically, S & G in X, S in X and G in X. I'm inclined to merge all those too. I think we can do it in house. Why not copy this discussion or a summary to the task force page. I'm going to have to run. BTW, I am going to be off line after tomorrow for about 5 days. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bduke (talkcontribs)

Chris, I have some additional info about Saint Helena and possibly the BVI article. Will keep my eyes open for more. Have commented on the merger proposals on the taskforce page. Kingbird (talk) 21:11, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name missed from list of recipients of silver fish award

[edit]

Rotha Lintorn-Orman was awarded the Silver fish at the same time as Nesta Maude; they were in fact the first two girls to achieve the distinction.

In Guiding archives there is a photo taken to commemorate the awards of the two girls standing proudly either side of their Guide Captain Mrs Blanch Lintorn-Orman who was Rotha's mother.

Rotha went on to earn notoriety as the founder of the British Fascist movement and is now linked with some less than uplifting gossip, but her achievement should nevertheless be recorded in the list of recipients. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.140.145.62 (talk) 18:27, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I'll have a look around for some references and then make the necessary changes. If you'd like to amend the article yourself, then go ahead! We'd value your input. Kingbird (talk) 19:24, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Female editors on Wikipedia

[edit]

I did not realize the number of female editors was as low as 13%, until I read it on Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Think of Wikipe-tan!. Though I personally like Wikipe-tan, I am egalitarian and do not want to chase off the editors we have in GGGS taskforce. Is the GGGS Wikipetan I had commissioned offputting?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 13:15, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I haven't got back to you sooner. I don't have daily access to the internet, and other commitments have prevented me from being on Wikipedia recently. Rather than answer your question here, I will drop my thoughts on the taskforce page. Kingbird (talk) 21:32, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Girl Scout cookie, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bronze Award (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
