Route boxes on station articles: contrast problem

[edit]

Hi, this edit reminded me that we have a widespread problem across station articles: blue text on a blue background just isn't readable. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains#Route boxes on station articles: contrast problem; I have applied a suitable fix to just that one NI station article. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:17, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's a pretty clever solution. Only thing is that after just editing 50-something stations with text background route colours, I'm slightly less inclined to go back through and edit every single one of them again to use coloured stripes instead. However, I could do what I did with a darker blue-coloured line, and use spans to make the link text white instead of blue for this line as well. Still shows up against the blue, and seems readable enough to me. ~ Karl H. 22:29, 6 January 2013 (UTC) ~
The problem with making the links white is that it goes against the second bullet of WP:CONTRAST - "Links should clearly be identifiable as a link to our readers". I don't mind altering 50-odd articles in the same way that I did Londonderry railway station - after all, last month I did that to all the stations in the Cardiff Valleys, and there's easily more than 50 of those. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:00, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've now fixed up all the stations under Category:Railway stations in Scotland - there were well over 500 pages to do. Would you like me to amend the Northern Ireland ones in the same way? Will those in the Republic need doing too? --Redrose64 (talk) 21:06, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, if you like. I'll start editing some as well - may as well take a bit of work off your hands. The Republic doesn't have any route colours that I'm aware of, then again, I haven't seen any of their timetables as of late. Northern Ireland's timetables and maps have used distinct colours for their lines for about ten years now, Wikipedia's just never reflected that. Oh well, may as well just stations in the south be for now until I can get my hands on an Iarnród Éireann timetable, but feel free to get started on the north. ~ Karl H. 21:16, 18 January 2013 (UTC) ~
P.S. In case the route colours change in future (which is entirely possible), I've created a bunch of templates you can use instead of the route colours on each individual station. That way, all the pages don't have to be individually changed if a colour changes to a slightly different shade of green.
Not quite sure why I created them with the US English version of "colour", but oh well. ~ Karl H. 21:30, 18 January 2013 (UTC) ~
Great - I've put them into Category:Templates for UK railway line colours. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:04, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Queen's Quay railway station, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Terminus (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Honorifics in lists of politicians

[edit]

Hi Karl304. Since you've edited one or more of List of current members of the British Privy Council, British Government frontbench and Official Opposition frontbench in the last six months, I'd like to invite you to a discussion about the use of honorifics in those lists. The discussion is happening here, and I look forward to a helpful and robust discussion. DBD 20:56, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Template NI Exec

[edit]

Hi. As far as I'm aware, the Executive is now no longer functioning and no ministers exist. I took this from the BBC. MLAs will continue to sit in the Assembly until the 26th, but the Executive is no longer. Unless you could clarify? st170e 18:17, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You could be right. My interpretation was that since the Economy Minister's debate on RHI costs has been postponed till next week, that he must still technically be a minister for that debate to happen or be of any use, even if only in a caretaker capacity (obviously nothing useful can happen without a FM/dFM). I could be entirely wrong on that, admittedly. ~ Karl 20:40, 16 January 2017 (UTC) ~[reply]
You could be right also: it's a really grey area. The Executive has collapsed but other reports say that ministers are in place until the election. If you manage to find any other sources, let me know! st170e 04:08, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BBC News is reporting there's minister's question time today in the Assembly with the Justice Minister and Infrastructure Minister (Link, under "Summary"). I guess that means they're still ministers? You're right though - it's a woefully grey area. ~ Karl 13:32, 17 January 2017 (UTC) ~[reply]

FOI for Northern Ireland Railways

[edit]

Hi Karl304, Do you know if there are any FOI station figures from before 2022? If not do you think we should request some. RooneyDonal21 16:13, 15 June 2024 (IST)

Hi RooneyDonal21. I've just had a deeper look around the WhatDoTheyKnow website. It seems a diligent user has been requesting yearly station figures since the 2015/16 financial year, all of which look like they've been duly provided by NIR - so there are actually a lot more figures out there in the public domain than I'd thought!
