I only wanted to discuss and improve Wikipedia's coverage of the topic othe page that formerly was my biography. In fact, there is no copyright issue on the page. I own the copyright on the image

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Updated Bio of December 10, 2007.pdf. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 17:43, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Jzirin. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article James D. Zirin, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Mr. MacTidy (talk) 21:46, 21 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Conversations with Jim Zirin requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. A tag has been placed on File:Jim Zirin.jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

In addition to the above, after having reviewed what you've been doing, the material you've been posting has been heavily promotional. Wikipedia does not permit promotional material, and strongly discourages writing about something one has a conflict of interest with, including oneself. If you would like to promote yourself, there are many sites which do permit such material. You should consider using one of them instead. Unblocked

[edit]

As you've retracted/clarified the situation on the legal threat matter, and that was the reason for your block, I've unblocked you. However, as noted above, you'd also been engaged in promotional editing. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and presume you may not have known what was expected in regards to that. If you're editing about yourself, or something else you have a conflict of interest in (relative, employer/employee, a company you have a stake in promoting, etc.), it's generally expected that rather than directly making edits or creating articles, you'd suggest them and have editors without a COI review the material first. If you have any questions about how to go about that, you're certainly welcome to ask me. Seraphimblade Talk to me 15:14, 30 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, you have a fast and loose style of referencing. On further inspection some of these are sourced to nyc.gov which I'll take to be WP:RS. However, I can't approve this as it still lacks notability. As I see it, the points of notability come down to:
  • Book as bestseller: There are so many bestseller lists that this, of itself, is not sufficient, per WP:AUTHOR. If this were a New York Times bestseller that would be a different story. In the absence of a more specific source, however, I can't assume it is.
  • Book as award recipient: The Kirkus Star does not meet the criteria of a "major literary award" listed under WP:BOOKCRIT. A Booker Prize, Nobel Prize, etc., would, but more than 100 books get Kirkus Stars annually so this is probably correctly classified as a "minor literary award."
  • Conversations with Jim Zirin: According to the only source offered, it is cablecast in NYC. Having a local TV show is not, by itself, a presumption of notability. If the TV show is the subject of widespread media coverage then the host could be notable, but that is not established in the draft.
  • Author of 100 op-eds: This is unsourced.
  • Who's Who: This is explicitly rejected as a symbol of notability in WP:BIO as it accepts self-nominations.
Aside from the core issue of a lack of notability, there is the other issue that this article does not have references, other than the nyc.gov link, that give any biographical detail of the subject of the article. They merely prove he is a living person. Proving someone is a living human is not sufficient to establish that person's notability. Ideal additions to this article would be things like: a profile story in a major newspaper, a tribute article in a scholarly journal, a biography of the subject published by a reputable publishing house, etc. Vicki Been is an ideal model article of an American attorney who might not be widely known but can establish a track record of consistent and regular coverage - of an in-depth and biographical nature - in RS which establish her notability.
Another issue is that there are external links in the body of the article in violation of WP:EXT.
Yet another issue is that there are no sources to prove "He is married to Marlene Hess, daughter of American businessman Leon Hess.". Marlene Hess is covered by WP:BLP (even if she may not be the subject of this article) and we can't publish a claim she is married to James D. Zirin without reliable sources. This is doubly important as the phrasing of the sentence establishes Marlene Hess' identity exactly (the daughter of Leon Hess), as opposed to any random person named Marlene Hess.
A short summary of the problems with this article might quote from a review The Economist penned of one of Zirin's books - that is, the claims in it are "asserted rather than demonstrated."' [1]
