ANI reports

Don't forget that when you report a user to WP:ANI, you should notify the user, such as with template {{ANI-notice}}. You and I both reported the same individual, and I've already notified them, so you don't need to report separately. I also took the liberty of combining our reports. —C.Fred (talk) 01:13, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I was going to, but then I noticed that you had also posted a report, and notified the user. Also, thank you for combining reports. Joseph2302 (talk) 01:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Mistaken warning due to accidental rollback

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize pages by deliberately introducing incorrect information, as you did at Marcus Mariota, you may be blocked from editing. NeilN talk to me 00:10, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I think this is a case of you reverting multiple times without checking what you're reverting? --NeilN talk to me 00:15, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes it is, I assumed that User:BrendanE99 blanking sections was vandalism, when in fact it was removing false information. I'll be more careful in future. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:17, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Tip: If you see a bunch of redlinked users making dubious changes do a diff with a bluelinked editor version to help you figure out what's going on. --NeilN talk to me 00:20, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely do that in future. It's the first second mistake of this kind that I've made, so it'll teach me to be more careful in future. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:24, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion declined

Hello Joseph2302. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of World of Color—Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: It's not WP:MADEUP, but is just a proposal. To WP:AFD? Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 09:08, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh okay, this is real? The user had made other hoax pages. My mistake. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:29, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
It's OK, we all make mistakes. I have no problem at all with adding the speedy tags. The editor has a small history of creating fake articles. But this wasn't one of 'em. Google first, then add the speedy tags. As for mistakes, I've been an editor since 2006 and an admin since 2013, and still make a lot of mistakes. I self-banned myself from Speedy Deletion for a month when I made massive mistakes - oops, can't find it right now. List of Australia women Test cricketers needs update. Get back to you soon. Thank you for telling the readers that the page "Orchestral Suite in G minor, BWV 1070" has some issues! Glad to see you Joseph! I'm just a student in China but I am a fan of classical music. Could you help me improve this page even further if you can? Thanx!

Christopher Christopher2625649908 (talk) 13:08, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Christopher2625649908, I don't know much about classical music, but I can try and help. I'm looking for sources at the moment. Also, I've added a note on Talk:Orchestral Suite in G minor, BWV 1070- I added it to classical music portal, so people on there can come help/style it like they do for other similar articles. This discussion was moved to Talk:Padgett's Creek Baptist Church

Thanks for your message: Per Wiki docs, we are allowed to add a home website to a page represents our business (church) that we did not create if it helps to clarify and better represent the information. Our website happens to be a facebook site so i know that means we have conflicting doctrines within the same discussion. This is important to the church, not because of the Wiki Article but because it has also been sucked into facebook and created a page there related to the national historic places. that in itself is great but it is confusing people who are trying to find us on facebook because it ends up being first in the list. Adding this link will get the people to visit the true website and proved more clear information for them. Since i cannot get the wiki created page out of facebook or claim ownership to it this is the last resort to providing accurate information to the people who will review this. (user talk:pagcrkbapchurch) — Preceding undated comment added 20:47, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

The problem is, if I add it back, then someone is just going to remove it again. I'm going to move this talk to Talk:Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, so other users can comment. Personally, I'm in favour of using Facebook in this case, but if I add it back, someone will revert it. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:01, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for trying your best to gain related external links (including where to buy the related CDs) for the "Orchestral Suite in G minor, BWV 1070"! But you know, this work is not famous at all! Therefore recordings are hard to find. For years I have been trying to find a fine recording but I haven't been able to! Furthermore, many related webpages are censorship in China (where I live). Even if not, it takes too long to open the pages and it automatically stops! Thank you anyway! ^_^ Christopher2625649908 (talk) 23:04, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Joseph - Editing Wesley Taylor's page

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
This discussion was moved to Talk:Wesley Taylor

Hi Joseph2302,

I am a new user and have been trying to edit the content of Wesley Taylor's page. He is a client at Anonymous Content, where I intern, and he emailed us a specific bio he would like reflected on his page. He asked that any other information beyond the new updates be removed.

My initial edits were rejected as they lacked citations. I carefully cited the new changes, but received the message below from you: "Joseph2302 left a message on your talk page in "March 2015". Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did at Wesley Taylor, you may be blocked from editing."

As a new user, how can I make the changes reflect his updated biography? I apologize for any confusion or disruption, and appreciate your help!

Best, Talent Intern Talentintern (talk) 00:28, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Talentintern:,
I shouldn't have used the word vandalism, as it was probably a harsh way of describing your edits, which clearly had good intentions.
However, it is considered bad practice to remove source content without a consensus to do so (WP:REMOVAL). You changed his birth town to Elizabeth, New Jersey without a source mentioning it (source used doesn't mention Elizabeth anywhere), and have decided to completely omit his entire personal life (family and relationships), removing properly-soured content, which is common among biographies (BLPs). Your edit is mainly a list of achievements, which only mentions Taylor, whereas the other edit listed his collaborators too, and used more of a prose style.
The problem is that whilst your edits may be the article that Taylor wants written, this is an encyclopaedia, and as such any relevant reliably sourced information should be added, not just the cherry-picked information that your client wants.
I think that as this is an issue about the article itself, it should be discussed on the talkpage, so all users can contribute. If you don't have an objection, I can copy this discussion onto the talkpage?
On a different note, as you appear working on behalf of Wesley Taylor, you should familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, if you haven't already done so. If additionally you are being paid by Wesley Taylor to edit, then you need to particularly read the paid editors section.

Hope this helps. Joseph2302 (talk) 01:04, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Joseph2302,

Thank you for your informative reply. I am okay with moving this to Wesley's page, and will post a longer response there.

Afmarcom

Hi! I hope I am doing this right. I received a message from you about an inappropriate entry. I actually never intended to create a Wikipedia page at all, but when I created an account in order to edit an entry, I was given the option of creating my own page, so I did. (It currently has one sentence.) I don't mind if you remove the page, but I never intended the entry as an advertisement. (And I don't sell anything, anyway.)

Speedy tag on Shi Lan Qin's Moon

FYI, Shi Lan Qin's Moon is broken out from Qin's Moon. She is a fictional character, not a real person. As it stands now, this article could possibly be speedied under A10 - recently created articles that duplicate an existing topic. (I am not going to do so at the moment, nor will I attempt to stop you from requesting that someone else do so, should you desire to.) Whether a good idea, bad idea, or indifferent idea, the original author wanted to make an article for this particular fictional character, and hopefully intends (or intended) to come back and expand it. --B (talk) 19:53, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mbaker124,
I've changed all the information about the assessor to Jeremy Prang.
I cannot add a photo of Jeremy Prang to the article, because Wikipedia/Wikimedia does not currently own one, as far as I can see (I checked https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page, which is where all the images Wikimedia own are listed). Until someone uploads a free/uncopyrighted image of him (which satisfies the usage conditions here WP:IUP), then I cannot add one.
I have no idea why Bing has the wrong photo, I guess if we could add a correct photo then Bing might update itself.
Also, do you mind if I copy this discussion to the article talkpage? Because then other people might also be able to help. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:58, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Good job for protecting World Cup Page, Most of people think Bangladesh V India is declared.(It will be declared by tomorrow :) ) It is not officially declared yet. Thank you for this, although it's not just me who helped with this problem. Cricinfo had mistakenly added India to their fixture list, so lots of people believed it true, although thankfully they've changed it now. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:36, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

You tagged Economy of Sweden with a "POV" tag that references a talk page discussion. I don't see the discussion there? Was it the last one on the page? I don't think that was a fair assessment but rather just one persons opinion (really, a rant) with no proof provided. Civility

" You seem to be the stupidest human being ever" [1]

How is that supposed to make anything work better? Andy Dingley (talk) 02:06, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

So it's perfectly fine for them to attack me and everyone else repeatedly for about an hour, but I'm not allowed to vent my frustrations at them? The comment was clearly stupid, but if admins had blocked this obvious abuser sooner, then this situation would not have got so super-nasty. I regret saying it, but I cannot see why they were allowed to prolong their abuse of multiple users for so long. Joseph2302 (talk) 19:24, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes, you're not allowed to vent your frustrations at them. Turn to gin instead, like the rest of us do.
The experience of the internet (a couple of decades pre-WP) is that "venting" doesn't work. It's not seen as venting by the other side, it's seen as escalation. So WP has tried something different, with an enforced civility, however false and shallow that seems. On the whole it does work better.
Admins aren't "on call" (we don't pay them enough), so the cost of that is a sometimes slow response. Patience is however cheap. What would it really have cost to leave the article with this disputed content for an hour or two? Andy Dingley (talk) 21:45, 15 March 2015 (UTC)
I know it was stupid but I was frustrated, I've not done it before, and I'll almost certainly not do it again. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:48, 15 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I'm trying to reduce the list of old neglected merge proposals that are listed here.
I've noticed from your user page you have a Masters in maths, so hopefully you can have a look at this for me. In October 2011 someone proposed merging Knots and graphs into Knot (mathematics). They explain their reason for the proposal here. Nobody else has commented on it since.
Do you think there is a sound basis for the merge? If so, would you be able to complete it? Or if there is no merit in the proposal, can it be closed? Thank you for your help. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 06:06, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Oops, I didn't check to see whether the person who proposed the merge is still active. Parcly Taxel, I've noticed that you are still an active editor. Are you still interested in this proposed merge? AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 06:14, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Athomeinkobe: I'm still alive and kicking here; I suggested the merge because I felt that the relation between knots and graphs was something supplementary (as compared to intricate HOMFLYs and the old idea about atoms as knots in the ether). Parcly Taxel 06:28, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
I've not done a merge move before, but I'll give it a go- I did some knot theory 2 years ago, and graph theory 1-2 years ago. For the record, I strongly support merging the articles. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:54, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Done I've merged the articles, most of the graphs stuff is in a separate section, but I intertwined some of the definitions (like projections and Reidermeiester moves). Also, standardised the terminology, as R3 and E3 were being used interchangeably (with no explanation that they were the same), and S3 and S3 were being used interchangeably.

Also, thanks for asking me to do this, it's encouraged me to get more involved in Wikiproject: Mathematics. I'll try and see if I can do some other merges. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:59, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you both Joseph and Parcly Taxel for your attention. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 02:38, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for taking this to AfD--I was getting ready to do so myself.

A few notes on speedy-tagging:

  • If the article is speediable and the author keeps removing the speedy tag, there's no need to give up and take it to AfD solely on that basis--just reapply the tag and keep escalating the warnings on the user's talk page ({{uw-speedy1}}, {{uw-speedy2}}, etc.) until they either get the message and stop or they keep doing it past Level 4, at which point you can report them to WP:AIV
  • In this case, however, the tag was removed by a user different from the author--speedy tags are not supposed to be reapplied if they are removed by a user independent of the original author, however dubious that "independence" may be.
  • However, all of this was kinda moot since films (and books) are not among the subjects eligible to be deleted via WP:CSD#A7, so the speedy tag really didn't apply in the first place. It really should have gone to AfD stright away.

Thank you for your time and dedication, and happy patrolling! --Finngall talk 14:38, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

The problem is the user removing the speedy deletion tags isn't the same user as who made the article (although I suspect they're sockpuppets of the same user), so they weren't technically doing anything wrong. Which was why I put it up for AfD instead. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:41, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
Maybe socks, maybe meatpuppets, maybe not. (My money's on meatpuppetry) In any case, I've done them the courtesy of notifying them of the SPI. Have a good day. --Finngall talk 14:53, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Please revisit the deletion discussion and the article itself. Perhaps you might wish to withdraw? Schmidt, Michael Q. 01:10, 21 March 2015 (UTC)  Request withdrawn I guess you're right. Joseph2302 (talk) 01:13, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Biography

Hi Joseph How do I get an article about my biography?

Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bedelmandel (talkcontribs) 22:16, 20 March 2015

Hi,
I would recommend reading this article on creating your first article: Wikipedia:Your first article. The important important things when creating an article are that you use a neutral point of view (i.e. not promotional), it isn't a copy of another website (this is a copyright violation), and in particular that the subject is notable. Notability is generally determined by the amount of secondary sources about the topic. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:25, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

The School edits

Hello, as you might know I have also reverted similar information from the page; I have done so three times and would like to know from someone else if that means I can't do so anymore as a violation of 3RR. Although I've edited here awhile I am still feeling out how things are done here. Thank you 331dot (talk) 19:53, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

3RR rule doesn't apply if their edits are vandalism. Honestly, I'm not sure, but I can revert, plus I'd already to decided to report them for edit warring if they reverted again (which they've just done). Joseph2302 (talk) 19:56, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

That's fine. Turns out the stuff they added were probably copyright violations too, and so you definitely would have been fine reverting it (as removing copyright violations doesn't count as an edit towards 3RR). Joseph2302 (talk) 20:12, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Editing Abdul Razak Baginda wiki

Dear Joseph2302, thank you for your guidance.

I would like to clarify what it is that's of concern with regard to my edits so as to not go against any of Wiki's policies.

I am not affiliated to the subject matter of the wiki, Mr Baginda, but I have attended a number of his seminars and talks.

It is indeed true that Mr Baginda was the subject of a murder trial and investigation, and he had been cleared of any wrongdoing in 2008. In fact, this matter is the subject of another Wiki which is of no concern to me.

I noticed however that most sources cited in the Wiki are from online tabloids or media portals which report based on speculation and conjecture, or are clearly bias (not that bias is itself inherently wrong, but there's political concerns which should be kept separate from this objective wiki). For instance, the submarine deal is known to be a political concern attempting to tarnish the credibility of a 3rd party, namely Malaysian PM Najib Razak. WP:BLPGOSSIP WP:GRAPEVINE

In light of Mr Baginda's wiki being flagged for removal owing to non-credible sources, I was aiming to propose a new perspective, in view of, among others, Mr Baginda's role as director of the islamic peace foundation.

I believe that Wikis strive to achieve objectivity and balance. The present wiki is not yet that.

(Yusttw (talk) 01:23, 27 March 2015 (UTC))

Having looked at it again, I agree the sources on some of the trial look pretty bad, and I cannot see a decent source that actually says someone tried to sue him. I think there is definitely an undue weight being placed on the Submarine thing, and if you can find reliable sources about other things, then definitely feel free to add them. This seems like a case of me reverting too quickly, without actually looking at how good the sources are. Joseph2302 (talk) 01:32, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
And I guess I was also confused by your edit summary which said "Recieve direct information from the source Dr. Abdul Razak Baginda in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia"- this made me think you were editing the page on his behalf.
Also, Amazon is not considered a good source of information, if you want to publish a list of his books, it probably needs a better source i.e. someone not selling them. Joseph2302 (talk) 01:35, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Dear Joseph, thank you for the reply and clarification. Moving forward, i will do edits with more care and be mindful of the citation and requirements. Please let me know if there's anything that I should be aware of. Much appreciated. (Yusttw (talk) 04:06, 27 March 2015 (UTC))

Deletion of the article ICC cricket world cup 2015 Attendance.

Article has now been deleted using AfD.

This article is being considered for deletion in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy.
Dear Joseph,
I have created one new article which is essential and valid article, its about the attendance figures of ICC cricket world cup 2015 attendance, where most of the people doesn't know the attendance figure facts of the ongoing tournament. so please reconsider the article its my first article, if there is any wrong in that please let me know, I really worked hard on this article, referring the valid sites. Please let me know what exactly is wrong with the article, I'm new to this. THANK YOU --Anup Allwin (talk) 06:19, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
I didn't nominate it for deletion, however once it's been nominated for discussion under WP:AFD, no-one is allowed to delete the tag saying it's being nominated for deletion. Basically, it's now a discussion about whether to keep or not, the discussion is here-feel free to contribute your opinions. The main issue is that Wikipedia discourages long lists of statistics and information, see WP:NOTSTATS. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:32, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

If you are still making an article, you need to put Draft: before the name, (e.g. Draft:Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival) so other people know it's still being worked on. Otherwise, it will get deleted. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:18, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Banned for what?

Dear Joseph, I do not understand why I am banned from "Jeff Martin," a page in which I created. I created this page to get to know how to use wikipedia better, now I am banned from it. I've watched many videos on how to create wikipedia pages and I do not know what I did wrong.

You see how the Jeff Martin page is at the moment, with links to lots of different articles? This means it's a disambiguation page, which means the only information it should have is links to other pages, in this case for the 7 other people on Wikipedia called Jeff Martin. If you want to create an article about someone called Jeff Martin, you cannot use Jeff Martin as the article name, instead you should use a different name like Jeff Martin (singer) or Jeff Martin (songwriter).
Also, it's not just you that's been temporarily banned from the Jeff Martin disambiguation page, but all new or unregistered users, it's called page protection. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:09, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
Also, if you want to make an article on Jeff Martin you should definitely read and understand Wikipedia's conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Your first article should also help. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:14, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
User in question now blocked as a sockpuppet.

Hi Joseph2302. Since coming off their block (they were blocked from the 27th to the 29th), they made a couple posts to your talk page and a couple of short posts to the article talk page. All the problematic huge posts were made before the block. -- Diannaa (talk) 23:25, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

They've added a spam-load of content here, just like they were doing before their block. Plus I don't appreciate my user talk being spammed about a page I'm not interested in here and here, despite the fact I told them not to here. I only got involved with the issue because they were spamming pages (before their block), and now it seems they keep on adding info to my page for no reason. Joseph2302 (talk) 23:33, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
My apologies for jumping in on Joseph2302's talk page, but Ak107839 is user:Aradhyasharma. Both have made the same edits on the Second Battle of Anandpur.[2][3] The IP 106.192.162.50 is also user:Ak107839 per this edit in which he removes the IP signature and replaces it with his own. AND, since Aradhyasharma is blocked for a week, Ak107839 appears, who also uses the same mannerisms in his typing.[4][5] Again, my apologies to Joseph for dumping this information on his talk page. --Kansas Bear (talk) 01:16, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
Has this been reported as a sockpuppet investigation? Because it seems like pretty clear socking to me. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:20, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
Heads up; It appears that Ak107839 is not just a sock of Aradhyasharma, but both are sockpuppets of Amanharleen, who was indef blocked back in January. Richard Harvey (talk) 12:06, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Joseph, I'm sorry if rules were breach but I was merely updating all expired links to working ones and wasn't editing any of the contents.

SBO:WIKI (talk) 13:47, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

@SBO:WIKI: Changing links is fine, as long as they follow Wikipedia's external links policy. I would still recommend that you read the conflict of interest guidelines (WP:COI), as it's a good guide about what to do and what not to do. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:53, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

--Agdeditor (talk) 19:42, 30 March 2015 (UTC) Hi Joseph,

A number of resource links on our page (mostly press release and article links from 3-4 years ago) now go to 404s as the result of changing our CMS. Is it ok to update those?

Thanks

agdeditor

@Agdeditor: That seems fine to me. Just so you know, secondary sources (news websites, books etc.) are considered much better to use than primary sources (i.e. the company website). Joseph2302 (talk) 19:46, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

COIN stuff

hi! i am so happy that you are working on COIN stuff. Thanks. You and i both need to be careful - i've gotten harshed on before, for reverting based on COI alone. There is ~actually~ no basis in policy for reverting based on COI alone. I generally go for WP:VERIFY (unsourced); WP:PROMO, or WP:NPOV reasoning for actual reverts, and only deal with the strong should not directly edit aspect of WP:COI in talk discussions. (i grant that tonight i based my scripps wholesale revert on COI and i shouldn't have done that.. i have self-reverted and did it right).

Also... per WP:COI, it is ok for conflicted editors to update simple, factual things. And if they do that, you actually have no grounds in policy to revert them.

We need to keep our noses really clean and use a lot of self-restraint, and act carefully, based on policy. The reason for this is that COI is only a guideline (not a policy) because the community remains really divided about COI - there is not clear consensus to make COI into policy. Most of that has to do with OUTING, but there is a small chunk of the community that actually thinks paid editing is fine (yikes right) and they check in from time to time. So we both need to not overstep.

anyway, i am enjoying working with you! Jytdog (talk) 00:41, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words, I tend to patrol the new users contributions, and that seems to be where most of the COIs turn up.
I've self-reverted on Telcordia Technologies because the content change on there was okay.
With the Scripps one, I was trying to remove all the WP:VERIFY, WP:PROMO, or WP:NPOV, but it was basically just everything they'd written, and by the time I'd worked that out, you'd already reverted it.
I personally agree, that COI/paid editors shouldn't be allowed to directly edit/create articles, but I understand we have to stick by the rules. After all, most unhelpful COI editors will break some other policies as well, and get warned for that instead. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:50, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
I don't know if you have WT:COI on your watchlist, but DGG made a great comment there yesterday having to do with the crush of COI editing at AfC, and saying we need more editors there and at COIN. see here. if you don't know him you should stop by his talk page say hi.
