Null Bot and PRODs

See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#PRODs_not_expiring. It seems that your bot may have failed somewhere in that no purge was performed yesterday, as none of the articles in the March 1 PROD category were showing on the expired category's page. I took care of it manually, but you might want to check your bot. jcgoble3 (talk) 20:22, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, the problem is understood. It may be irregular through Thursday or so for reasons too large to fit into the margin, but I'll try and make sure things are kept more or less up to date. --j⚛e deckertalk 22:11, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Just a quick request related to this: since someone notes that we can't tell when the bot fails because it never edits, could you instruct it to make occasional edits? Perhaps you could create a page in its userspace that it would edit once per day, simply by replacing the page's contents with ~~~~? I read WP:BOTAPPROVAL to indicate that unapproved edits to the bot's own userspace are fine without approval. Nyttend (talk) 00:20, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I doubt there'd be any objection to logging, I'll play with this when I'm back home next week. --j⚛e deckertalk 05:00, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Amruta Sapre

The page is half-baked, but I will try to see if I can find some reliable resources. Unfortunately, not much info about this Indian actress is shown to be found anywhere on the net, at this point, other then the fact that she has voiced Bloom in the Hindi dub of Italian animated series Winx Club for Season 4 (at least it's what it says I believe), and for an additional voice role in Indian animated film Return of Hanuman, as I heard from a friend who does actually live in India. If you'd like to help contribute to her page, I'd like that. Thank you. But in the meantime, I will see what I can do. --BlueMario1016 (talk) 20:14, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

I'll take a look at adding stuff when I'm back later this week, do you need a copy of the article in the meantime? --j⚛e deckertalk 05:01, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm not seeing anything in the way of reliable sourcing. --j⚛e deckertalk 00:16, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

The purging function is action=purge on the API right, if so, I can volunteer to host the task on my toolserver and set it to run 15 minutes. It'd be a one line script on my end.—cyberpower ChatOnline 16:04, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, but I really need to migrate task 1 to the desktop anyway (it's one of those things I've been putting off forever), and BAG asked me to honor replag as well. Most appreciated, though! (I could manage the stuff on your toolserver in any case, if you'd prefer, but it's really not that much of a bother to do here. Whaddya think?) --j⚛e deckertalk 16:06, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
ALso, while I made it sound like a hassle, it's really not, mostly it's just waiting for Xcode to download so that I have a command-like make. *rolls eyes in the direction of Cupertino.* --j⚛e deckertalk 16:08, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
If you want to. I mean you don't have to waste all that power to run a simple purge function every 15 minutes. My script would be $site->purge("Main Page");
I want to, but the reason probably isn't obvious -- you're asking about "task 2", and not having automated the daily initiation of "task 1" has been a PITA. Once I have task 1 done (and it looks like it's working, but I want to perform a few double-checks), well, it's only a few extra seconds of work here, too. --j⚛e deckertalk 18:26, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
Both tasks appear to be running now. Hooray, our long national nightmare is over.  ;-) --j⚛e deckertalk 18:45, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of article on LINAK

Hi Joe,

I can see you have deleted the page Linak.

It is quite difficult for me to find the discussion leading up to the deletion (and even to find the previous content of the article), but my guess is that "family owned" has been misinterpreted as "small". But the owner of LINAK is actually a US dollar billionaire and is the 6th richest person in Denmark and the 1268th richest person in the world (source, in Danish). And the previous text that was in the Linak article (which showed up via my Google Dictionary extension in Chrome) was actually quite helpful to me. I wanted to know what Linak was, and the text quote from Wikipedia (given by the Google Dictionary extension) explained that in a short and to the point manner. Therefore I was surprised to find the article deleted on Wikipedia.

Maybe Linak is not very known (I didn't know about it), but what is the point of an encyclopedia if not to make things more known to people? And to make it possible to look up things you don't know about? As I said, we are not talking about any little small family business with two employees, but a major company within its niche: linear actuators. Try for instance to make an unpersonalized search for "linear actuator" on Google. To me, Linak comes up as the first company in the results. See also Linak in Brief: 1,600 employees in 35 countries.

We shouldn't be fooled about the fact that it is "family owned"; LEGO is a Danish family owned business too.

There is also plenty of stuff on Wikipedia that only very very few people know of, but I don't see that that should be reason to remove it from the encyclopedia. On the contrary, that is more of a reason to keep it. It's the whole point of an encyclopedia to state facts that few people know about – otherwise they wouldn't look it up.

As I said, I can't find the discussion leading up to the deletion (maybe it should be made easier to find these discussions?), so I don't know exactly why it was deleted. And I cannot even read the original, as the history seems to have been deleted as well? So I don't really know what arguments to come up with, as I don't know the arguments (and facts) leading to the deletion. But I do find a small article about Linak to be very relevant, given that it is a large company within its niche, although not very known outside its niche.

And that it is owned by a US dollar billionaire seems to make it relevant as well.

Maybe the original was written too much like an advert? Well, I can't see if that is the case, because I cannot find the original, because the history has been deleted as well...

I find it quite strange that the history is deleted too when an article is deleted here on Wikipedia. Couldn't the system just make the article empty, meaning "deleted" / "not written", but keep its history, so that it is easy to go back and see what was written before and especially to check that the facts match the reasons given for deletion?

So, what is the procedure to make the article come back? I would be happy to remove any advertising-looking phrasing in it, if there is any. And also to add the information that makes it notable, for instance that the owner is a billionaire, how many employees it has in how many countries, etc., so it won't be deleted again. I just don't want to rewrite it all over again, just because some quick deleter that didn't investigate it enough thought it should be deleted.

Where did the deleted article go?

(Edit: If this is the "discussion" leading up to deletion, I don't see much discussion in that. Only the opinions (which I don't think is a discussion) of a very few people. Definitely not enough to lead to such a major thing as deleting a page and hiding its contents (I still can't find the old content of the page)).

--Jhertel (talk) 12:10, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Yep, that is the relevant discussion, it makes non-obvious reference to a couple policies, so I'll try and translate what's going on there. The editors there aren't intentionally speaking in code, but the volume of our rules and regulations often leaves some of our conversations a little jargony.
Promotional tone was one issue, but that's usually dealt with by editing--fixing the words, rather than simply deleting the article. The other concern there (and you see references to this when people talk about the word sources is whether the article is based on the "multiple, reliable, third-party" sources that provide in-depth coverage that are required by our basic WP:CORP guideline.
The easiest thing to do to get a Linak article is first to create a draft article in your user space, say Ualk:Jhertel/Linak. The critical part of this is finding a couple of magazine articles, books, or newspaper articles, that are written independently of the company (not reprinted press releases!) and that talk about the company in some detail. Then use those as references for what you write in the article. Give me a poke when you've got something together, and if I think it's reached our WP:CORP bar, I'll be happy to move the article into place, if we end up disagreeing on that, I'll be happy to point you in the direction of where you can appeal. I am away, but will attempt to check in daily, if briefly, here until I'm back home at the end of this wek. --j⚛e deckertalk 14:53, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind (and surprisingly swift) reply, Joe. And thank you for your kind guidance to what to do. I appreciate that very much. I was not aware of the WP:CORP guideline, and I can see it does require collecting some independent sources first, just to reach the notability bar. I will see if I find it worth the extra effort. --Jhertel (talk) 20:30, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello! I am not a bot

Please don't gouge your eyes out with forks. I have something that's slightly more useful and entertaining for you ....

Per the WP:RFC and WP:FRS guidelines, I respectfully request your feedback regarding a question of law.

Should the Ugg boots trademark disputes article include example cases of counterfeit consumer goods? Is the counterfeiting of brand name goods a "trademark dispute" when the counterfeiters are taken to court? One editor has raised a WP:NPOV concern, since the only case (out of many under discussion involving Australian companies) that has been lost by the Australian company is being excluded; he feels that excluding it leaves the impression that Australian companies "are as pure as the driven snow, and can do no wrong." Also, another editor has claimed that the introduction of example cases of counterfeiting "dilute" the discussion about whether the word "UGG" is a generic term, and therefore ineligible for trademark protection.

Please respond to the survey here with "Support" if you believe counterfeiting is a trademark dispute when taken to court, or "Oppose" if you believe the reverse is true. Thank you. Phoenix and Winslow (talk) 15:48, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Doppelgänger account?

Would you like me to register User:j⚛e decker as a Doppelgänger account for you? Also sense that's the name you use in your signature, it's a bit confusing for it not to be a redirect to your userpage. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 03:30, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion of putting up a doppelganger, I've just gone ahead and done so, I should have done that earlier. Not sure it's strictly necessary, the default spoofing checks should prevent normal users from creating that, but ... hey, can't hurt. I'm a little confused by one thing though, my signature generally does link to my userpage and/or user talk page (for the word talk), is that not working? (Of course it won't work on this page, because this is the talk page, and self-links are disabled.) --j⚛e deckertalk 07:13, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #52

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • The first year is over. Thank you everyone for being amazing and helping to build Wikidata and making it more than we could possibly have hoped for already. <3

  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • Deployment of phase 2 on English Wikipedia is currently planned for April 8. The remaining Wikipedias are scheduled for April 10. As usual this might change if we run into problems along the way.
    • There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
    • There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
    • We hit Q10000000

Hello! I will let the reviewers decide what they think, but when I look at the many, many sources you've provided, they are still self-published sources, blogs, submitted articles--I don't see a single one (and with so many, it's possible that I've missed something) that is the specific kind of newspaper article, newspaper article, book reference, etc., that meets our guidelines on reliable sources, which you can find at WP:RS. You may also find WP:IRS helpful I have suggested in the past that you get feedback on specific articles at WP:RSN, by asking questions there too, I doubt most of the references here would have gotten approval at that latter noticeboard. I feel that we must be having some trouble communicating about Wikipedia's requirements here, and I'm sorry about that, but I suspect (the reviewer will decide, of course, and I won't interfere), but I suspect that the submission will be declined. I'm sorry. --j⚛e deckertalk 20:07, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Duplicate names in leads

Hi Joe, I have removed the duplicate name for a Brazilian tennis player which has been tagged as dubious since June 2012 and noted why on Talk. I raised the issue on the RM of another Portuguese Tennis player here Talk:Vizcaíno. This remains counter all en.wp bios and counter WP:MOSPN and as tennis editor Jevansen says makes us look ridiculous. However if you want to restore the duplicate "André known professionally as Andre" I have no objection to you doing it. All the best. In ictu oculi (talk) 04:50, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

The issue, from Wikipedia's point of view, is whether that's demonstrated through independent sources. You may find WP:GNG, or it's cut-down version WP:42 helpful reading. Help!

There are a few anonymous users editing certain pages by fan perspectives. The things that are constantly being edited are the information for Skylanders: Swap Force, and the International titles, airings and ratings for Goosebumps (TV series) and The Nightmare Room respectively. I tried to invert the changes, but they keep coming back and somehow, more come in from the previous. What do I do? I think you may need to take care of this solution. ~ (BlueMario1016 (talk) 11:11, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

I haven't had time to dig into this, it's probably going to take some sorting, but I did notice at least one instance of pretty bad edit warring, and I've at least done a page protection in place there for the moment. I hope I"ll get a chance to dig in more tomorrow, in the meantime, I'll see if I can get some other eyes on the page I protected. --j⚛e deckertalk 06:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Allen W. Wood

Hi Joe, thanks for your notes re: Allen Wood's wiki page. I view the absence of this page as a significant gap in the Wikipedia, but I understand your concern that my stub article was insufficiently referenced. My hope was to get the page approved, then buff it up, since there's a limit to how much work I can justify on a page that might get canned. When my workload eases up in a short while, I'll look at producing a stronger page so that we can resolve this amicably. Cheers, Chris. ChrisBateman (talk) 09:57, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Chris, I appreciate your response. I close a lot of deletion discussions, and if I understand the article correctly, I think that Wood unequivocally meets WP:PROF criteria #5, I'll let you read it yourself to understand why I think it's a clear-cut case. Assuming that you haven't snuck in some hoaxy material or copyvios), once a few reliable references have been added to satisfy our verifiability policy, etc. this should be entirely safe from deletion. Small task for Joe's Null Bot

Hello! I set up Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement/Protection to cascade-protect the weekly TAFI queue page and its ten subpages the day before they're used on the main page. Would it be feasible to have your bot purge the page's cache once per week (after 00:00 UTC each Sunday) to ensure that the necessary transclusions occur? (I suppose that this would require approval, but I can't imagine that there would be any problem obtaining it.) —David Levy 21:40, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Absolutely. --j⚛e deckertalk 06:25, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
BRFA filed. --j⚛e deckertalk 04:48, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! It's much appreciated.
I see that a trial has been approved. Please make sure that the purge occurs after 00:00 (UTC) each Sunday. To be on the safe side, you could set it for several minutes (or even an hour) into the day. The exact time doesn't matter. It's only essential that the purge not occur before 00:00 (UTC) on Sunday.
Thanks again! —David Levy 05:10, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
My pleasure! I've scheduled it for 15 minutes after, hopefully far more than enough to account for any time skew, what have you. Hopefully I did my time zone calculations right.  :) --j⚛e deckertalk 23:26, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
If you're operating on Pacific Time, 00:15 UTC would be 5:15 pm during Daylight Saving Time (if your bot observes it) or 4:15 pm during Standard Time. 5:15 pm would work year-round, as this would translate to either 00:15 or 01:15 UTC.
Once again, thanks very much! (: —David Levy 00:00, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I got too. I probably need to (well, at least, should) come up with a way of being more clever about DST, but I have a a few months to worry about it. --j⚛e deckertalk 00:03, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
Please don't go to too much trouble. Leaving it at 5:15 pm Pacific Time year-round would be perfectly fine. Whether the cascading protection takes effect at 00:15 or 01:15 UTC makes no practical difference. Either leaves plenty of time before the content hits the main page (at 00:00 UTC the following day).
Thanks again! —David Levy 00:53, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
My pleasure! It's embarrassing how much I enjoy having a 0-edit bot, and having it actually do something useful. --j⚛e deckertalk 00:56, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Blendoku review

From what I understand Kotaku is editor reviewed and I searched around and found some more references - is this enough? Are they good enough quality? If not let me know and I'll keep looking. Hi 98.151: I owe you a response, haven't forgotten you, it's just going to take me long to answer. Sorry about that! --j⚛e deckertalk 23:04, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. My first reaction is still that many of those sources may not be considered reliable enough, but in this case, with reviews, and given my own lack of experience with video games sources, I have some doubt that I'm correct about that. You might do well to resubmit and to get a second editor's opinion--there's no shame, just a time delay, should the article get rerejected. You might also consider asking for opinions and help at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games and/or (As a completely unrelated matter, I"ve downloaded and started enjoying the game on my iPhone, I'm a nature photographer by trade and I spend a lot of time thinking about color, so it is amusing me quite a bit.) --j⚛e deckertalk 17:07, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
No problem. I'll resubmit, and see what happens. Thanks for the info. Also funny you enjoy the game :D — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.151.156.84 (talk) 04:22, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Please advise how I resubmit article as I have now updated.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikichange12 (talkcontribs) 06:46, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

I think you might have misunderstood the rejection, if you carefully read http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:GNG#General_notability_guideline, you'll find that it calls for reliable, independent sources, which would not include Wikipedia due to reliability, (see WP:RS), nor the other references you've added due to independence. You might find WP:IRS of help as well. Once you've found sources that back up what's in the article from an arms length, you should be able to resubmit.
As to how to resubmit, I'm not sure why it wasn't included before, but there should now be a link in the top rejection notice on the article draft that you can use to resubmit. Sorry for any confusion caused. Best of luck! --j⚛e deckertalk 07:09, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Blanking a userpage?

Hi. In my vandalhunting I came across a rather offensive userpage, that doesn't follow the WP:UPNOT guidelines at all. I already warned the editor about it but no reply. I'm not really expecting a reply either, it appears to be a vandalism-only account. How do I deal with that page? Can I blank it? CSD-tag? Thanks,  Yinta 21:16, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

If it's the one I just saw looking at your recent contributions, I'd actually tag that for speedy deletion as an attack page, it can certainly be seen that way. In fact, I'll do just that.  :) --j⚛e deckertalk 21:20, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

The article Ellie Darcey-Alden has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ellie Darcey-Alden, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Vandalism on Galen Rowell

I know you watch my talk page, but in case you didn't see it: User talk:Hike395#Vandalism on Galen Rowell. :-( :-( :-( —hike395 (talk) 02:01, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

I hadn't, but I just went and looked. I've added six months of WP:PC level one protection to the article, we haven't had anything but vandalism from non-autoconfirmed users in that long and we've (percentage-wise) too much vandalism, I think it's an easy call. I'll try and keep an eye on it, but if you see me miss anything there give me a kick and I'll see if further protection or action is warranted. I really appreciate you pointing that out to me. and I'll leave a note over on your talk page, too. (PS: I noticed your account a couple days ago at here which is part of the resources of this, FYI.) --j⚛e deckertalk 02:23, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I didn't realize that PC was still active -- I had thought it went away after the pilot. It's great that you did that! I felt terrible for the family.
I don't really want to be an admin: the only tool I think I would use is editing protected templates. I hope the unbundling passes. (Speaking of which, check out Template talk:Decdeg#Call Lua code directly?).
See you around! —hike395 (talk) 23:16, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Wow, I forgot to respond here. Where's my brain?
Yeah, PC got revived for limited use, a month or two back, but this is really the best use case for it in my opinion--ugly vandalism, vandalism that will be easy to spot by reviewers, very low-volume article. The reviewing software is a bit of a mess, but is at its worst when there's a backlog of edits to be reviewed, I don't think that should be a problem here. I'd've just used semi-protection if I couldn't have used PC.
it's nice to be able to do things now and then--you'd be a real help with complex template/LUA coding I'm sure--but mostly I got the sense you'd rather stay out of the admin business, and I really respect that. Maybe we'll eventually get some sort of workable unbundling, that'd be nice.
See ya around! --j⚛e deckertalk 00:44, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Samsudeen Technical and Fundamental Analysis - Posting

Thanks for your kind reply

Regards Bilal — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bilaltvr75 (talkcontribs) 03:57, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks for engaging with me here on my talk page. When I declined that article, I gave you references to our general notability guideline and to WP:42, which provides a quick overview of the former. Those guidelines are the basic test for inclusion in our encyclopedia, they insure that we have enough independent, reliable, third-party information to base what we say on. Now, I gave a couple examples of the sorts of sources that might work to establish that this fellow meets that test, and there may be others, if you read WP:IRS you may get a sense of how Wikipedia's policies look at the question of whether a source is reliable enough.
These policies help us reduce the amount of false information, promotional information, and non-neutral information in the encyclopedia, and are very important to us.
I'm very sorry that these policies are confusing, but they are what they are. In your shoes, I would work to find more reputable third-party sources that indicate what you're telling me about this guy, and use those to improve the article, then resubmit it. Best of luck, and have a great week! --j⚛e deckertalk 06:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Vafra

Hello Joe,

Thank you for your elaborate reply (on Facebook) in regard to Vafra rejected Wikipedia article.

"In computer chess, a chess engine is a computer program that calculates chess position and chess moves" or it may be better to say that "In computer chess, a chess engine is a computer program that analyses chess position and makes decision on the best moves."

"Most chess engines do not have their own graphical user interface (GUI) but are rather console applications that communicate with a GUI such as XBoard, WinBoard or glChess via a standard protocol." Chess GUIs (or chess interfaces) such as XBoard, Fritz chess interface, etc., normally cannot 'think' but rather plug-in a number of chess engines (usually one at the time) to perform that functionality (chess 'thinking').

Every chess engine is different (different chess engines may assess chess positions differently and advise different chess moves). There are competitions where chess engine chess playing strengths is assessed. CCRL 40/40

"Vafra for Microsoft Windows is a free (by Robert Jurjevic cloned from Crafty) Winboard chess engine with classical approach to chess. Vafra chess engine can be used with ChessBase's Microsoft Windows Fritz chess interface (via Wb2Uci adaptor written by Odd Gunnar Malin) as an UCI chess engine to assist in chess analysis." This effectively means that Vafra is (yet) another chess engine (derived from and closely similar to Crafty chess engine) which can be plugged-into Microsoft Windows Fritz chess interface.

Vafra is not one of the top chess engines but plays a decent chess (many times it makes the same moves chosen by top chess grandmasters, that is evident when following big chess tournaments online live, it normally loses when playing against other top chess engines such as Houdini, Rybka, Stockfish, etc.)

Some chess engines have their separate Wikipedia pages (including Crafty from which Vafra is derived): Houdini, Rybka, Stockfish, Crafty, etc.

"Determining notability does not necessarily depend on things such as fame, importance, or popularity—although those may enhance the acceptability of a subject..."[1] "Articles require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."[2]

If Vafra chess engine is not notable deserving a separate Wiki page maybe I could edit Crafty chess engine page (not sure if I would be allowed to do that) mentioning that there is Vafra (Crafty clone) chess engine.

"Both references are self-published sources,..."

Crafty (Wikipedia article on Crafty chess engine from which Vafra chess engine is derived).

CPW (quite an official source, far away from being self-published, it was used for notions such as bitboards, negascout parallel multithreaded brute-force alpha-beta search, etc., true Vafra chess engien is not mentioned there but Crafty chess engine is).

Vafra (download) (as Vafra is my chess engine clone in that sense it is the official source).

There is Vafra Facebook page (created by me). Vafra (Facebook)

ChessBase has recognized Vafra as (a separate from Crafty) chess engine (Vafra name appears in the image, lower right, you need to enlarge it to see it, otherwise it would appear as 'New engine', not as 'Vafra').

Prof Robert Hyatt (principal author of Crafty chess engine) may confirm that Robert Jurjevic (that is me) is working on Vafra (Crafty clone) chess engine for years now (Robert J and Prof Hyatt exchanged hundreds of emails on the subject).

Thanks.

Regards,

Robert Jurjevic — Preceding unsigned comment added by RJurjevic (talkcontribs) 09:44, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
"http://chessprogramming.wikispaces.com/" - the description there makes it sound as if one can register and write immediately, and that changes would be published before any formal editorial oversight? Is that right? If so, then it has the same problem according to our guidelines as citing Wikipedia itself, or Wikia, or even IMDB. If that's not, then you should add it and a comment for the next reviewer. You may find Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources useful reading for understanding the background of the different reasons we have such a maze of requirements on article sources, too. Best of luck with your next submission! Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 15:16, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

P.S.

Vafra analyzing in ChessBase's Fritz chess interface (Kramnik vs Gelfand, after 13. O-O, at Alekhine Memorial 2013 in St Petersburg on 30/04/2013).

Vafra's analysis

(to enter amongst the top three analysis chess engines on Playchess chess server for the chess tournament of this strength the engine has to run on a pretty fast hardware)

Oh, I do think the CCRL list might get some traction with whoever the next reviewer is, so I'd include that too. Again, best of luck! --j⚛e deckertalk 15:18, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Joe, I would appreciate your opinion of my handling of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Linda DeLibero, see User Talk:J04n#deleting Linda DeLibero for more context. Thanks, J04n(talk page) 01:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Oh my oh my. I read through the arguments and, reread the later parts of PROF (rare to see any criteria but C1 in play, so that was actually a treat), reread the AfD.... and came up with the same answer you did. I also spent a couple minutes trying to dig through sources myself, and couldn't make a compelling case for WP:GNG, either. So I would have closed the way you did, and probably (if I'd been participating) voted 'delete' or 'weak delete' if I'd come to the article fresh. Like journalists, this sort of subject is likely to get a lot more passing mentions than directed coverage, which often leads to people who don't live and breathe GNG getting surprised and disappointed. Still, I'm a bit surprised at the level of drama there, I'm sorry you're having to deal with it. --j⚛e deckertalk 02:41, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

STEIGER DYNAMICS

Hello, Thank you for your speedy email. An article I submitted on STEIGER DYNAMICS was denied, and I was trying to figure out why? As far as I'm aware, it met all qualifications for submitting an article to Wikipedia. If you can please tell me why my article was denied, and what i might be able to do to avoid this with my next revision, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.

SD2013 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sd2013 (talkcontribs) 00:47, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for coming over here. We're talking about WT:Articles_for_creation/STEIGER_DYNAMICS this submission.
I think the first thing I should say is that "rejected" isn't forever, but it will take some changes, in my view, to get this approved.
In terms of promotional language, non-encyclopedic language, etc., the first thing I noticed, on a detail level was the use of subjective adjectives and adverbs, "ultra-quiet", "aesthetically pleasing", "seamlessly integrates", "industry leading components", "to the discerning user", and so on, in addition to marketingese verbs such as "enables" and "facilitates".
If you have any relationship at all with SD, you may wish to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest as well, with regard to that sort of writing. It's hard to do about yourself or your company, and we don't recommend it.
There is another problem, too, another "hurdle" any article on Wikipedia should meet goes by the name of our notability guideline. It's a term of art here, with a very specific test, called the general notability guideline. You can read it at WP:GNG, or a short version of it at WP:42. Roughly speaking, that PC Gamer review is the sort of source that guideline is looking for, you'll want a second, independent, reliable magazine/book type article to demonstrate that you meet this second test. In general, I recommend only using third-party sources to write an article from. Your mention of Editors' Choice is entirely on-subject and appropriate, it's their opinion (and probably a fair one) but one the article describes as their opinion, which is fine. Only use primary sources (that is, what you can find on SD's web site) to fill in incidental details. This strategy tends to result in articles that meet our various guidelines more quickly.
Those sound like very cool PCs--water-cooled, nifty! I wish you the best of luck with your next revision and submission. Have a great week! --j⚛e deckertalk 01:04, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey Joe, Thank you for the feedback. It was very helpful. I resubmitted the article with the incorporated changes. I've restored it, but noting that it appears to be a copyright violation, taking text from [1], I have marked it as such for review by another administrator. You are welcome, of course, to rewrite an article from scratch so long as they comply with our various policies and guidelines, e.g., notability, verifiability, neutral point of view, copyright, and so on. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:38, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Things like composing music to what is often regarded as the best game of all time makes one pretty notable, no? --Niemti (talk) 17:41, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Sometimes, sometimes not, it's generally a matter of WP:GNG in my experience at AfD, as there is no relevant SNG, but in any case I'm in no hurry to get rid of reasonable articles. Have a great week! --j⚛e deckertalk 18:06, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I still think you may have a close paraphrasing problem, by the way. Why folks insist on trying to work from copyrighted-tainted text is always a mystery to me. --j⚛e deckertalk 18:11, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Can you show me a couple sources that meet our WP:RS guidelines and which are independent of the subject and which provide significant coverage? --j⚛e deckertalk 06:37, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply! Here are some sources:

Hi--thanks for the information, I realize it took some time to put that together. The first two, which are the easiest two to look at, are press releases. Are the other five? --j⚛e deckertalk 16:19, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

The others are magazine articles over the years. I chose those specifically because they were written about Sayoc Kali from an outsiders perspective. These are just a few, there are more references in books and other publications which I am currently locating.173.55.147.205 (talk) 14:31, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Okay. Because that was deleted as the result of a community discussion based on our notability guideline and sourcing, it took me time to verify the references you've provided, and the press releases left me with the impression that you were not familiar with those policies and guidelines. However, of the five articles you've provided there, I've been able to verify the 2003 Black Belt article and (more or less) the Martial Arts Illustrated article, they appear to be reliable, contain signficant coverage, and were not "in view" during the AfD. I assume you have access to all five of these articles, and will be rewriting the article based on the verifiable information within them, and including the references to those sources. I'll restore the article in the next couple minutes, thanks for your patience. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:29, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your assistance on this. I'll be working on the article over the next week. 173.55.147.205 (talk) 14:41, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Great! Let me know if I can be of any assistance, and thanks for working to improve that article! --j⚛e deckertalk 15:10, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Nintendo Nightmare

I was trying to figure out what you meant when you declined it. Are you saying the article is not big enough yet?

99.140.198.164 (talk) 13:22, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Nope. Sorry that we have such a maze of policies, it is difficult to make sense of them when you're new
our article needs references/citations to reliable sources, independent of the subject, that talk about the subject in detail.
To explain further, "relliable sources" generally means things like newspaper articles, magazine articles, things that have had to be written and checked through by an editorial process.
"independent of the subject" means that it can't be the company's home page, Facebook page, press release, product description they wrote, etc.
This limitation can be frustrating, as this requirement prevents many subjects that are not particularly famous from having Wikipedia articles. It does guarantee that we're more likely to have correct and unbiased information, which is why we do things this way, but it does come with a cost. --j⚛e deckertalk 15:13, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

I see... Well, I will finish it for practice, and see if it complies otherwise, but this is not fit for this site. Maybe, I will transfer it elsewhere... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.140.198.164 (talk) 22:55, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Oonga (Film) - Deletion

Hi Joe,

I received the intimation that the page has been deleted, and rejected because it is a copyright violation. Can you tell me what exactly is the violation? This is the first time I have created an article... Also this is an article about a film that I am very closely associated with, so if you can guide me as to what exactly needs to be done? This is the link I received.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nakedindianfakir (talkcontribs) 11:00, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Sure, the plot summary was, as near as I can tell, directly taken from probably from your film company's literature, e.g. [2]. You may (quite reasonably) wonder why that's an issue.
When you enter text in Wikipedia, you're actually making a copyright claim, the text between the edit summary and where you press "Save page" says:
By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.
More or less you're asserting that you own the copyright to the text in doing so, and that you're giving anyone the right to use that text for any reason. For the film, it's possible you have that authority, but there's no way that we would directly know it.
Anyway, it is possible to work through that issue if you really have the legal right to, that is covered at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, and once that was handled, I could undelete. Many contributors find it simpler to rephrase. Thanks for your contributions! --j⚛e deckertalk 14:45, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. So as you suggested I will rephrase this... I am attaching below an alternate plot summary.

"Little adivasi Oonga missed his village school trip to see the ‘Ramayan’. Upset at being the only kid in his village Pottacheru who has not yet seen the fantastic warrior-king ‘Rama’, Oonga runs away, embarking on a long perilous journey to the big harsh city Lohabad where he's told he will find this mythical hero.

Oonga braves his way across forests, rivers and roads, stealing lifts on cars past valleys laid to waste by industrialization… along scary under-construction highways… until he reaches large, cold, chaotic, blinding Lohabad. Where he finally sees the play.

He's stunned to see that Rama is everything the adivasi are - gentle, brave, a forest dweller and protector of mother-earth Sita. But he is Blue! Oonga gapes in awe as his hero saves Sita from the greedy ravaging demon king Ravana.

When he emerges from the play, Oonga believes he has become Rama! Painted blue, he returns to Pottacheru, unaware that he is now returning not to the warm, safe confines of a home he left behind, but to a battlefield where the ‘company’ will do anything to take the adivasi’s land away from them to mine it for Bauxite.

As the Naxalite rebels and the CRPF soldiers go to war over Pottacheru, little Oonga, in his Rama avtaar, believes he can save his home from the Ravana seeking to ravage it.

And a little blue boy picks up a little bow and arrow to script an eternal story."

Request you to please let us know if this is okay, and if so to 'undelete' the page, so we can make the requisite changes.

Thanks a ton for your help.

Sorry, I'd missed you'd replied here--if that text isn't taken from elsewhere, I'd simply submit it as a new article for creation. Undeleting the old material still means it's acceessible, which we can't do because of the copyright issues. But no problem with just taking this text and submitting it anew! --j⚛e deckertalk 02:51, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Karthik, I'm working from a small device right now, and I'll need to give you a longer answer here, so it may be tomorrow before I respond, but I"ll be happy to give some help, of course. Sorry for the delay. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:43, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Just to let you know, the Comcube International account has been blocked indef as a promotional username by Beeblebrox. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:51, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Jcgloble3 -- thanks for the note. Karthik, if you see this and create a new account, here's what I'd say. Articles on corporations here have to be referenced to, and largely written from--reliable, third-party sources. That generally means magazine and newspaper articles (but not counting those that are simply reprinted press releases.) And those articles need to really talk at length about the article subject, not just mention it. And the article needs to be written in words not used in other copyrigthed material, and written in a way that sounds like an encyclopedia--very neutral and non-promotional. This is very hard to do if you're involved with the subject, hard enough that we generally recommend that you don't try, although it's obvious that many ignore this advice. Here's a plain and simple overview to the conflict-of-interest issues: Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. One thing you can do is to list a potential topic at WP:Requested articles, however. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 02:48, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

 Done --j⚛e deckertalk 16:43, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

I have just noticed the template {{polluted category}} at the top of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica which was added by you added by you

I have also noticed it at the top of several other categories that I monitor, all of which contain the test described in the next sentence. I am curious as to why you have added {{polluted category}} as the category is only populated by transclusions (instances of the template) that pass the following test:

{{#ifeq: {{NAMESPACEE}} |<!--is set--> |<!-- then-->[[Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica]] ... }} (For an explanation of how this test works please see Help:Magic_words m:Help:Magic words)

This test was added to this template back in August 2010 explicitly to exclude user space, talk pages and template space (for such things at the tests placed on the testcases sub pages.

-- PBS (talk) 12:12, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Ahh, but it is polluted. Check the first two entries in the category, the very first one is not in article space. That, I suspect, triggered inclusion in http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_reports/Polluted_categories , and would still. (At one time I had a hope of getting that listing to be small enough to be complete-- by fixing templates with the sort of test you indicated here, marking truly "ok to be polluted" cats as such, and so on. I gave up, the report is messed up in part by database corruption.). --Joe Decker (alt) (talk) 14:57, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
In any case, no worries on my part if you want to remove the tag. *shrug* --j⚛e deckertalk 16:49, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Joe

Thanks for checking out my submission related to the Play the Game Award. I'm currently working on an article about the NGO Play the Game, which will be uploaded shortly. I thought a brief article explaining what the award is was relevant as it will be referenced in the main article about Play the Game. I will update the PTG Award page, with any other articles I can find, after I have uploaded the main article about Play the Game.

The organization itself is noteworthy, as are the recipients of the award, all of whom have attended the conferences and received it in person.

I appreciate you taking the time to look at my submission

Besteastern — Preceding unsigned comment added by Besteastern (talkcontribs) 16:45, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Besteastern. Notability, as the term is used in our guidelines, is pretty straightforward. Just show a couple of reliable, secondary sources--things like magazines or newspaper articles about the award, and it's a done deal. You can see this policy at WP:GNG or in brief at WP:42. that policy is there in part to ensure anything said about a topic is based on somewhat neutral, arm's length references. That sounds like a great organization, I wish you all well. Thanks! --j⚛e deckertalk 17:08, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Boost ETP wiki page

Joe,

Maybe you could tell me why all my work was deleted? You have cited the fact that I used copy written work in my page, this is not the case, any diagrams on my page were generated by myself on my own machine.

How do I go about getting my work back, regardless of if it is published or not I do not have a hard copy of the written work in my article.

Kiltale — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiltale (talkcontribs) 17:39, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, we caught the copying of text from [3], I'm sorry that wasn't mentioned in the deletion notice. When you enter text into Wikipedia, there is a notcie that says the following
By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.
In other words, putting text into Wikipedia is incompatible with keeping any claim to a copyright on it. Note that I have no way of legally knowing if you have the authority to give up copyright on that material.
Now, if you legally represent the copyright owner of the materials used in this article, you may find Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials helpful, it explains how you can demonstrate who you are to our OTRS crew, and eventually use material like this. However, usually such material is not properly encyclopedic in tone, and rewriting from scratch is preferred. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:49, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Joe,

Thanks for getting back to me. I will follow your steps and prove that I have permission from the copywrite owner. Can you advise me as to how I get back my written text (ie the bulk of my article)?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiltale (talkcontribs) 19:58, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

If you hit the email link on this page you can send me an email where I can send you a copy that way, even before the donation thing is worked out via OTRS. --j⚛e deckertalk 22:09, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Joe,

I can't find the email link on this page, maybe you could copy and paste it to my user page? Thanks, Kiltale. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiltale (talkcontribs) 11:16, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Can't, that would still be putting up copyrighted material. To find the email link, search on this page for "Email this user", it's in the left hand navigation bar under "Toolbox". The toolbox section may be closed, however, you make have to poke at the little triangle to the left of the word Toolbox. --j⚛e deckertalk 13:35, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Ok,I did as you said and there's no link for emailing you.
