WP:FILMS Questionnaire

[edit]

As a member of WikiProject Films, you are invited to take part in the project's first questionnaire. It is intended to gauge your participation and views on the project. At the conclusion of the questionnaire, the project's coordinators will use the gathered feedback to find new ways to improve the project and reach out to potential members. The results of the questionnaire will be published in next month's newsletter. If you know of any editors who have edited film articles in the past, please invite them to take part in the questionnaire. Please stop by and take a few minutes to answer the questions so that we can continue to improve our project. Happy editing!

File:Dettifoss Iceland3.jpg

[edit]

Would you mind adjusting the license on File:Dettifoss Iceland3.jpg to, basically, any other license? The problem with "GFDL 1.2 only" is that if WP goes to Creative Commons (which may happen sometime this year) this tag will not be compatible. GFDL 1.3 is compatible, as are almost all of our other tags. BTW, it's a really great image. Thanks. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 21:50, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I like your version better. I fixed the tag (it was slightly different than the original), uploaded it to Commons and linked to it from the original. Thanks! ~ JohnnyMrNinja 09:26, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I recently started the Dermatology task force and want to create a subpage for the taskforce that addresses dermatologic photos, giving guidelines/recommendations for good images. On that page I was simply going to link over to Wikipedia_talk:Featured_picture_criteria, but also wanted to added a few comments specifically geared towards dermatologic photos (like something about always having a ruler, etc in the picture to keep size in perspective, etc.). I also found a paper online (see [1]) and thought I could integrate some of its pointers into the page. However, I am a dermatologist, not professional photographer, and therefore wanted to know if you, or any of your friends, would help me develop this page? kilbad (talk) 17:30, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Magician Picture

[edit]

Hello, Hope all is well. You make valuable contributions to Wiki but could you please remove the magician picture? It is offensive and insulting to me. It shows and stands for every thing that is wrong with magic and helps foster poor public perception. Magic is relegated to the lowest rung of the entertainment ladder by most of the public and your picture shows the prime reasons why. Magic is a performing art and should be the richest of all performing arts. In a baseball article would anyone show poor performer it their living room playing WII baseball?

Your improving my photo

[edit]

Just to thank you for improving my photo at:

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:6308-340DisneyLandChopper-R.jpg

I was not able to get that much contrast and brightness improvement, out of my Adobe photo software.

I am curious as to why the KBytes made such a reduction, with your editing (from 1.36MB, to 631KB). When I improve my existing photos, I rarely get much KB reduction, and sometimes it actually increases.

I am eager to learn more about the how and why to improve old photos, so any pointers, information or explanations will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

triang T/T

[edit]

Hi Janke I live on Vancouver Island BC - my dad bought a bunch of Triang TT in 1959 on a visit back to England. I have it now. Do you know much about it? I have quite a bit of track about 8 personal railcars and about 8 industrial ones with 4 engines and coal cars. a few extra bits too like a walkover bridge, a station that says Plymouth on it and a railyard building. My Dad was an Electrical engineer trained in England but moved to Canada in 1952. He made his own transformer that was quite large but I do not have it now. We bought a new one and it works fine. Some of the old switches burned out when hooked up. I have not run the set for about 10 years and the engines probably need cleaning and oiling. poisonous mushroom icon

[edit]

Hello Janke,

I made it green because green is used for sickness, at least in America. See, for example, a couple of the images when one googles sick person also, poison control stickers in this country are green. I've never seen a magenta icon to indicate sickness or poisoning. de Bivort 15:11, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You say green's not something you'd think of for sickliness, and yet when I've asked two co-workers and my girlfriend (and no one else) what color an icon indicating poison would be, all three said green. Here's a google for poison icon. Guess what color appears many times? Green. Guess what color appears never? Magenta. But here's me not really caring that much to replace your image... de Bivort 13:44, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:JEon3003.jpg

[edit]

Hi. This poster is distorted. The image should really be stretched vertically. You can see examples of the poster in proper proportions from Google Images. The image is now used on Disney which should be a high-profile page, so it would be nice if this could be fixed. I also note that there is no fair-use rationale for using that image on Disney. I'd do it myself but I'm not comfortable with the copyright implications of uploading images or writing fair-use rationales. Care to fix? Question

Hello Janke, I'm Hunter. I have what is perhaps an unusual question, but I thought you might be uniquely suited to answer it since you are an animator, and you took a picture of Frank Thomas. I am trying to find information specifically about the famous spaghetti eating/kiss scene in Lady and the Tramp. I'm looking for anything I can find about the scene, including how it was conceived, animated, critically received, etc. etc. I've been told Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life is a good source for this, but am looking for any other books, journals, news articles, etc. that could be helpful, and wonder if you could perhaps give me some advice of where to look? You can let me know at my talk page or, if you prefer, my email hunterkhn(at)gmail.com. Thanks! — Hunter Kahn 20:54, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This file really ought to be a lossless PNG, so that JPEG compression artifacts don't get in the way of illustrating what you want to illustrate. I'd convert it myself, but really, if you still have the original, that would be better.

If you have a reason why it should be a JPEG, I'm all ears. And, of course, if there's no way to get a PNG version, you might as well remove the tag I put on the image, since it would be better to leave it as a JPEG than to convert it again. — trlkly 15:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Animating on 3s

[edit]

Please mind that you need to cite your claims on Wikipedia, even general statements. While it may or may not be true that anime is animated on threes, you will need to cite this claim. IsaacAA (talk) 16:04, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Despite your feelings that this is an "observable fact", you should provide a citation to improve the article, instead of adding to the already enormous lack of citations. IsaacAA (talk) 22:25, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You really should review Wikipedia's verifiability policies. You can't cite a user-editable website, like a wiki or a forum, on technical matters. Especially when they plainly misuse the terms they supposedly explain. IsaacAA (talk) 06:04, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TRAINS AND MORE TRAINS

[edit]

Janke

I wrote to you before about this more than one year ago.

I have been working on these pages

Finnish Railway Museum List of Finnish locomotives

I also wrote many (but not quite all) of the pages on individual Soumi lokos and uploaded my own photos. You can find my work.

I wanted to write a good page on the Finnish Railway Museum because when I visited back in 2006 nothing was in English but I am told that has changed and now the museum has information in English.

So I have now done all I can on these projects. Perhaps you would like to add your own photos, information and fill some gaps.

Removal of animation that is not the goat bowl one

[edit]

Hi to Finland, Janke
I can agree and I will not object to the removal of the goat bowl, as you say, because "there was no way of watching it until it was made into a modern animation". However, you have removed another animated GIF from the Animation article here, namely the one linked to from the title above, without explaining why. I wonder if you did it by mistake or do you have any other reason for removing this one, too.--DancingPhilosopher (talk) 10:04, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Animation use

[edit]

Hello,

My Name is Russell Wallace. I'am currently a senior at the State University at Fredonia, in Fredonia,NY. As a student here at Fredonia I'am pursuing a degree in History with a minor in Museum studies. For my minor I'am working with the local historical society to renovate and reestablish a local train exhibit. For this train exhibit we were looking for a detailed cutout of how a Locomotive works. We found a website that had many pictures and animations by a man named R.A. Booty. We are looking for permission to use both the animations as well as the cut out of the train. I wasn't able to find a way to communicate with R.A Booty him or herself but I saw that you worked with this person on another page. I was hoping you could lead me in a direction of how to get in contact with R.A Booty. Any help would be greatly appreciated and any material we would used would be used for purely educational purposes.

Thank you, Russell Wallace

  • Well, all material published in Wikipedia has a more or less free license, so, provided you follow the instructions on the particular file's page, e.g. credit the creator in the way specified, imposing the same restrictions on subsequent use, there should be no problem. However, since you mention you found the material on "a website", I cannot be sure that you are referring to a Wikipedia page. Higher resolution version of Louis Marx photo ...

[edit]

Janke:

I edit Steam in the Garden magazine in the United States (http://www.steamup.com). One of our contributors has written an article about converting a Louis Marx "Commodore Vanderbilt" locomotive from clockwork to live steam.

To illustrate a sidebar article about Marx and its history, I was wondering if you had a higher resolution version of the boxed set that you have posted here. The version uploaded is too small by about half to be able to run in a print magazine. If you would provide your full name, I'll credit you in the article and send you a hard copy of the final printed issue.

If you don't have a bigger version of the photo, that's OK. I'll find something else.

Thanks.

Removing the Bulk of the Criticism Section of Animation

Hey there! I understand your intent with shortening the section on the critique of animation, but you completely deleted all of the information on feminist critique. [edit]

Thanks for uploading File:NEWScotland-2016-Aerial-Blackness Castle 01.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. I noticed you have a great deal of experience, looking forward to your reply. Wikipedia's rules regarding when to revert someone else's contribution to an article

[edit]

You have violated a few of Wikipedia's rules regarding content removal when you removed the sentence I had added to "cartoon animations." Please read through "https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Content_removal" so as to not make that mistake again. To summarize, the proper thing to do would be one of the following: a) Ask more than one unaffiliated party their advice on whether or not to remove the sentence and citation. The talk page is great for this. b) Immediately explain to me why you removed it in a message just like this one. Leaving a detailed explanation post-edit works as well. c) Edit my contribution to fix it (without removing it entirely), if the reason you removed it was because the citation was done poorly, or if the contribution needed revision.

I suspect you removed my content for reason (c), because you felt my contribution was poorly implemented. Removing my contribution for that reason, in my opinion, would be lazy; inconsiderate; and extreme. Wikipedia editors are exactly that; they aren't meant to delete everything they have minor problems with, with the expectation that the original contributor will try again, as I'm sure you know; that would be antagonistic, as opposed to cooperative and helpful. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception, so it is worth reminding you about our role, as I have just done. UnderCloud (talk) 03:06, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for your note. The reason I removed your contribution (which I stated was GF = good faith), was due to its banality and obviousness. However, I'll leve it in this time. Best regards, --Janke | Talk 13:09, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Stop Motion

[edit]

Hi Janke,

I made the edit on the stop motion page. In reference to your original undo reasoning, stop motion is a form of animation, (speaking as a professional MoCap animator) - however it is considered a separate sub-category, hence just a 1 line reference and a link to its own page.

Obviously the kineograph led to modern animation of drawn cells and keyframes, and thus CG. In the modern era, a flipbook is it's own thing and depending on its implementation can be a form of stop motion. But check the use of the parlence in this example of PBS: http://www.pbs.org/parents/crafts-for-kids/diy-stop-motion-flipbook/

Any search for 'stop motion flipbook' in google will show amateur and professional animation using the terms in conjunction.

I have redone the edit because of this.

Re: Animation

[edit]

Thank you Janke, but I've been adding all citations and doing a little bit of grammar, mainly looking around at Google Books. I don't have time to improve the animation article since I believe it may quickfail at GAN or at FAC. The article had its peer review in 2007, and here's what it looks like after this wasn't reviewed. It shows the lack of referencing as well as cleanup tags. I think the article is very bloated, since it has lot of cruft, balance and lack of focus at least. What I think I can believe is we can possibly format to a better prose without the copyvios, but I don't at moment since I can't think about it. John (Talk) 06:06, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Carolwood Pacific Railroad Layout

[edit]
Carolwood Pacific Railroad layout

I see that you are the author of the image for the layout (pictured) of the Carolwood Pacific Railroad currently in place in its article. It appears to be hand-drawn. Have you ever thought about creating a computer-based drawing of the layout? The reason I ask is because I am in the early stages of improving the article so that it can eventually achieve featured article status, just like the Disneyland Railroad article, which I re-wrote earlier this year. I don't know how familiar you are with the process of elevating an article to featured status (in short, it's a giant pain-in-the-neck), but one aspect of it is a focused review of the article's images, and frankly, I don't know if an image of an informal sketch is going to make it past that point. As you know, I attempted to create a route diagram of the CPRR here: Template:Carolwood Pacific Railroad, and as you correctly pointed out, it's not a 100% accurate representation of the actual layout. If you have the ability and time to do so, consider creating a new, computer-based map of the CPRR's layout. That way, you can continue to be the author of the layout image in the CPRR article and help pave the way for it to become a featured article. Jackdude101 (Talk) 23:43, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for supporting the featured article candidacy for the Carolwood Pacific Railroad here: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Carolwood Pacific Railroad/archive1. The review is going well, but the FA admin Sarastro wants additional review regarding the FA criteria, specifically whether the article is well-written, comprehensive, well-researched, and neutral. Since you are very familiar with the subject (I believe you also own at least one of the books used as a source in the article), adding a follow-up to your previous comment on the FAC page regarding these criteria will be very helpful.
