Yes, strictly speaking the sources used here should make it possible for anyone to verify the information which relies on them. That usually means citing published sources. A number of historical articles do in fact cite primary sources which the public can access (such as a document held in the Public Record Office or the House of Lords, with the accession number) but it is more correct to cite a secondary source which refers to such documents. You could deposit J. A. C. Tilley's passport in a suitable record office, but a book or article quoting from it would be better. Moonraker (talk) 03:01, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help Please

I have tried - I really have, but find I just can not get to grips with the editing and sub pages etc. I have written an entry for Sir John Tilley (Secretary of the Post Office) and have some photographs aswell. But everytime, I try to do something with it to make it fit for publication, I just end up going round in circles and getting a headache. If I can send it to someone or upload it somewhere (I would need really simple instructions), is there anyone who would be able to make it fit for publication and I can then edit it further adding the odd reference I still need to add? It's turned out well, but we are still lacking the photographs. The best place to upload them is at Commons, please go here. You may need to create a Commons account first. If you own the copyright of the photographs and can donate it, you will probably need to select a "Creative Commons licence", or you may be able to select "Author died more than 70 years ago". I have uploaded them to Commons and do own the copyright. I just need to add something according to a notification I got - just don't have time to work it out and understand what I did wrong, before I move on to the adding them to the article. It'll probably be towards the end of the month before I can get to work on it. But it isn't forgotton. Thanks for all your help Moonraker. It is much appreciated. Mutt Lunker, I'm sorry, I really don't know how this works. I'm not even sure you will see this. I am a real novice and I think Wiki has got too complex for me. I don't understand what is wrong with Thomas Montgomery-Cuninghame - I kind of thought it would be a stub, there for people to improve on. Please delete it if you see the need. Thank you.

Hi there, the problem is that there is no indication that the subject satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Have a read through WP:N, WP:GNG and e.g. WP:SOLDIER if you think he fulfils the criteria. Follow the link above to the deletion discussion if you have anything to promote your case. If you wrote the article because he was a baronet, that is not in itself inherently notable. Mutt Lunker (talk)

I came at it from the "there is a page listing the Baronets and so it would be good to have a link to a page covering him" https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Montgomery-Cuninghame_baronets Just a different logic. As you note at the deletion discussion that "it (took you) ages to even find" it and you describe yourself as a novice, from a training perspective it may be worth pointing out the blue link given in the 2nd paragraph of the initial post of this thread which would have taken you straight there: "The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thomas Montgomery-Cuninghame 8th Baronet". I'd encourage you to persevere. You created a well-constructed stub with this article, it's just a shame that in this instance the effort was in regard to a subject which is not WP:N/notable for inclusion here. I can see you have also made useful contributions to other articles. Your work is of value; don't be disheartened. What's more, your receptivity to constructive criticism is a real strength. Do you always edit on your phone? The type of edits you make must be a challenge on a hand-held device. What operating system is your phone and which app do you use to access and edit Wikipedia? Thank you Mutt. Very kind of you. I find the coding challenging and with ageing, processing new information more challenging also. I never really set out to contribute to Wiki, but as I researched a family tree, realised there were some contributions to be made.

No, I don't use my phone to edit. But if I get an email like the one through here, I click to see what it is about and then get frustrated LOL I use a grown up computer for proper work.

I copied the entry onto a Word document before deletion and as I go along, if I find new information, I can always resubmit without the challenge of coding again.
