DYK for Baer's pochard
[edit]On 28 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Baer's pochard, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Baer's pochard (example pictured), found in eastern Asia, has seen a population decline of more than 99 percent in past decades, and is no longer migratory in central and eastern China? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Baer's pochard. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Baer's pochard), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Copying licensed material requires attribution
[edit]Hi. I see in a recent addition to Androsace delphinensis you included material from a webpage that is available under a compatible Creative Commons Licence. That's okay, but you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. It's also required under the terms of the license. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. — Diannaa (talk) 12:16, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, I gave the attribution in the summary. I didn't know it's possible to append other contents inside a ref tag, following the {{cite}} template. Thanks so much for your advice. ——🦝 The Interaccoonale Will be the raccoon race (talk・contribs) 12:59, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

New contest!
|
This month has seen an incredible amount of activity creating high quality content, with 3 FAs, 3 FACs, and a veritable flood of GAs and GANs, not to mention the FLs and FLCs. To help maintain this high level of activity going forward, WikiProject Tree of Life is starting a new monthly rolling contest, inspired by the contest run by WikiProject Military History. This contest should hopefully help incentivize editors to contribute in ways that are less daunting than writing articles that are GA and FA-quality. Even improving articles from stub to start class, or helping other editors by reviewing their work at GAN, FAC, or FLC, gets you points, with bonus points for articles with especially high page views. Make sure to participate in any way you can, and help improve the 'pedia while having fun and winning Barnstars! |

The first edition of our new monthly contest had perhaps a little less participation than I hoped for, but it still resulted in a huge amount of content work, mainly focussed on de-stubbing articles on little-known species, although we did also see two GAs for Holozoa and Hypericum perforatum. Overall, over 60 articles were improved, with most going from stubs or redlinks to fully fleshed out articles. The winner this month was Simongraham, who improved 21 articles about spiders, mainly to B and C class, and racked up 70 points, over twice the next highest. Hopefully, we'll continue to see such great work next month, with even more participants and even more articles improved.

Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Copyedit notes on Phenotypic disparity:
[edit]- I'm wondering if the lead sentence should be dumbed-down a bit, or at least made a bit more obvious that the topic is biology. Perhaps: "refers to the variation of observable characteristics within biological groups."?
- have very little species → have very few species -or- have a very small number of species
- On the other hand, later-disparity groups may have develop new morphological forms → developed
- Taxonomic metrics was an early approach of measuring disparity among groups in the 1980s. → In the 1980s, taxonomic metrics was an early approach of measuring disparity among groups.
- The last paragraph reads a bit like a how-to guide which is not ideal encyclopedic tone, but it's common enough in explaining concepts or procedures and is good enough for now.
I mentioned close paraphrasing of the hook fact. I'm going to quote the source then the passage in the article, underlining the similarities.
In terms of species number, birds are more diverse than mammals (some 10,000 vs. ca. 5600 extant species worldwide), but are instead quite more uniform in terms of morphology, reproductive biology and developmental schedules. Even including less conventional kinds such as the flightless penguins and ratites (ostrich and relatives), the range of bird structural types is much narrower than the range of structural types of mammals, which include humans and whales, bats and giraffes, moles and armadillos.
and from the present version of the article:
For example, birds, with more than 10,000 species, have greater species richness than mammals, which have approximately 5,600 species. However, birds are relatively more uniform in morphology, reproductive biology, and developmental biology. Even including some rare groups, such as penguins and ratites (ostriches and their relatives), the range of body plans in birds is much narrower than in mammals, which include apes, whales, bats, giraffes, moles, the platypus, marsupials and armadillos.
So it seems like maybe half of that is straight from the source and structurally it's very similar to the source. I know it can be difficult, especially when you've been working at the text for a while. Let me take a crack at it.
For example, there are nearly twice as many species of birds as there are of mammals, indicating greater species richness, but birds are more consistent in morphology, reproductive biology, and developmental biology. The range of their body plans is relatively narrow, with outliers like penguins and ratites (ostriches, etc.), while mammals include such diverse forms as apes, armadillos, bats, giraffes, marsupials, moles, the platypus and whales.
Maybe that's a bit better? – Reidgreg (talk) 00:45, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions. ——🦝 The Interaccoonale Will be the raccoon race (talk・contribs) 02:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Accipiter becomes a paraphyletic in IOC ver 14.2 and Accipiter efficax and Accipiter quartus
[edit]According to the to-be published IOC version 14.2 Accipiter becomes a paraphyletic taxon. Yet there are two Holocene fossil species of Accipiter precisely A.efficax and A.quartus (both valid) from New Caledonia, but the Accipiter species of New Caledonia has been moved to the revised genus Tachyspiza. As previously we had genus transfer on the pages of the fossil species of Pampusana (even though scientific studies did not formally transfer) and movement of the subfossil species Mareca marecula (Amsterdam wigeon, moved to Mareca by IOC but not in any scientific studies) by IOC, so I think it is also reasonable to update the two pages’ genus name as Tachyspiza efficax and Tachyspiza quartus Huinculsaurus (talk) 01:18, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
