It should be AutoWikiBrowser and not the AWBUpdater. Go here and download the file named "AutoWikiBrowser4142.zip" - that is the file you need (I think). jj137♠04:16, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Where did you compile the list of cities for MA and CA from? Wherever it was, you can probably generate that list in the left box, and if you can't figure out how, I can probably help. jj137♠04:29, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
I created a user subpage for assistance. On AWB, here's what you can do to easily finish the task for California: make a list with "Links on page"; the page is "User:Ohmpandya/List of cities in California". Make sure the "Skip non-existing pages" part is not checked, and "Skip existing pages" is! Once it compiles the list, you should be ready to start; however, you will need to go the "More" section and enable automatic text for the page, something like "#REDIRECT [[]]". You will still need to enter the right redirect location each time. OK, any questions? jj137♠04:47, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
AWB
Well, you can modify the edit summary to say what you want. Don't include the "using AWB" part at the end, because it will automatically add that. Make sure the "Auto tag" box is unchecked. jj137♠18:38, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, strike out your top statement by adding <s></s> around it, and place a little statement saying you've withdrawn; someone should come around to close it shortly. jj137♠18:44, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
I think I can fix the to do bug but I'm not sure about a second row of userboxes. I'll work on it. jj137♠19:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
See the style at User:Ohmpandya/UBX. It is different, and if you would like to use it you can just copy and paste the code over the code already there on your userpage. The to do will show up correctly if you do that (it doesn't on the subpage). The userboxes don't overlap the to do, but rather push it below. If you can find something to fill up between the assessment chart and the to do I think it would look very good. Hope that helps. jj137♠19:14, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Parlier, Ca, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Parlier, Ca is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Parlier, Ca, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. To see the user who deleted the page, click hereCSDWarnBot (talk) 19:01, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
This was given because it seems you accidentally didn't give a place for the redirect to go to. It's OK, I fixed it. jj137♠20:56, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
You want them to be in the form: Concord, Nh, right? If so, I got them all. Actually, you can just install wikEd (if you are using any browser except Internet Explorer) which has a find-and-replace thing that lets it change all of the links automatically very fast. jj137♠21:00, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
For some you may be able to. For example, for Alabama, you could have AWB add something like: #REDIRECT [[{{subst:PAGENAME}}abama]] . For other states, such as Alaska (which has an abbreviation of AK), you may need to do it semi-manually (unless I can think of a way otherwise; I will try). jj137♠01:10, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
You had the settings for CA/NH set up to automatically add some text and then you had to add some, right? If you add that text I said above it should automatically do all of the states without you having to do anything except hit "Save". jj137♠01:33, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
There are five tabs: "Set options", "More...", "Disambig", "Bots", and "(3) Start". Go to the More... tab and check the enabled box, so that it will automatically add whatever text you tell it each time the page loads (just type the code in the box). It doesn't matter whether it is "Append" or "Prepend", it is a new page so it is the same either way. Now, whenever it loads the new page that text will automatically be there. jj137♠01:44, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I was searching for any possible way and I really could not find anything. I know a way to do this but it would require going around 2-3 times on the set of redirects to get it right. jj137♠21:35, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
That will give you a few thousand edits, probably :) I will try a batch of "odd" cities and give it a try... it shouldn't take too long. jj137♠21:47, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
At this point I think the quickest way to do the "tricky ones" would be what you did before with the typing and copy and pasting. What I had in mind would just take too long. -- jj137♠22:14, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
You're creating a bunch of redirects that are missing a bracket and don't function. Could you please fix this and be more careful with AWB in the future? Thanks, Pyrospirit (talk·contribs) 22:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Hey,
You appear to be rapidly making many articles with erronous content (broken redirects). Not only do you appear to be running a bot, but it is faulty. Please fix this.
TheJosh (talk) 22:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
AWB seems to be forgetting a bracket in the redirect making lots of broken pages. Please stop until you fix this, and fix all the pages this occurred on. Thanks, Thedjatclubrock :)(T/C)22:34, 2 January 2008 (UTC).
Special:BrokenRedirects will show all broken redirects on the site, but only updated every so often. You could just go to the subpage and if any are red links you will know they were deleted for being a broken redirect (although I don't think any admins would go through and immediately delete them all before notifying you). jj137♠23:28, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, well, carry on, then. That AWB stopping when you get a new message sounds like a pain, to me. (I'm a Luddite, I don't use all these new-fangled edit helpers. Why, back in my day ...) :) Corvus cornixtalk00:42, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I have disabled your AWB access for now. This has nothing against you, but I'm very concerned by your redirects creations, and all the ones you were planning to perform. I fail to see how they can be beneficial to the project, considering no links point to them. You should get consensus before planning to continue these edits. Thank you. -- lucasbfrtalk18:16, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
I needed to stop the spree (I asked an other admin, and he gasped too). Sorry for the harsh block :). I really think this is a very bad idea, and a waste of ressources. I checked a couple redirects, and no link ever pointed to them. I don't think anyone in his right mind would type that in the search box. If I'm mistaken and you discussed your edits before doing them, please accept my deepest apologies and I will of course reinstate your AWB rights. -- lucasbfrtalk18:20, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry I wasn't clear earlier, I meant community input, as a wikiproject (arguably I can't think of any suitable) or the Village Pump. I suggest you to create a thread at the VP, and from there we'll see if we need to delete or if we continue creating the redirects. -- lucasbfrtalk23:31, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
I think the Village Pump would be the best place. This is a pretty major task, and due to the amount of complaints from people, you probably should get some sort of consensus on this. jj137♠21:14, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't think that's the same copyvio content though, is it? (Doesn't look like it) Either way, it was 2006, not 2004. -- jj137♠02:06, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
What part of Water well was a copyvio? In a well-established article like this, we don't speedy delete it - the copyrighted part is removed and deleted from the page history. Tijuana Brass (talk) 22:09, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
See the reasons directly above. Copyvios are only speedy deleted if they comprise the overwhelming majority of an article and there is no possibility of correcting the error. Tijuana Brass (talk) 22:32, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Another tip...
I looked over some of your recent contributions - nothing bad, I just like to check in on newer editors to see how they're coming along - and noticed this edit where you tagged the USOTC as needing more sections. In an article of this size, where there's only three paragraphs, it's not really necessary to break it up into sections. That's the kind of tag you would use if an article was a couple of pages long and had no divisions. Of course, what would be even more helpful than tagging articles is editing them to fix any problem that you've found. It doesn't take much longer, and is much more valuable to the encyclopedia as a whole.
Perhaps I can clarify for you. As indicated at the speedy deletion guideline, articles should be speedied for copyright violation if the article meets all of these criteria:
Copied from another source (we must ensure that the other source didn't copy Wikipedia),
No non-infringing content on the page or in the history worth saving,
Material introduced at once by one person, and
No credible assertion of public domain, fair use, or free license.
In these cases, it is proper to tag articles for speedy deletion under WP:CSD#G12. Please notify the article creator that you have done so; you can copy the notice directly from the speedy deletion template. It is required that creators be notified under this criterion as it is essential to ensure that they understand that such edits cannot be allowed. This article qualifies. Water well did not because it did not meet all of the criteria and because as set out at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Explanations, articles that are "long-standing or heavily edited" are excluded. --Moonriddengirl(talk)22:56, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Probably, or it will automatically go to the Spam file. Or, perhaps they don't speak English (and they just copy/pasted it)? jj137♠03:07, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
The first one includes deleted edits, the second doesn't. When updating my userpage edit count userbox, I tend to check the one including the deleted edits. :) jj137♠03:15, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Hello, need assistance please
Greetings. I just created an entry for the Center for Arms Control and Non Proliferation. However, when I created it, I wasn't aware that the title of the organization wasn't capitalized in the entry. Is there a way that I can change that?
I actually don't know if I could help you, unfortunately. That would require some major bot programming work probably; the only bot programs I am familiar with are AWB and pywikipedia (Python), and neither of those would work. The people at BAG (Bot Approvals Group) are pretty much experts with this stuff, so if you ask any of them I'm sure they would help. jj137♠02:19, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Separate account (you already created Ohmpandyabot). Also, I thought of an alternative suggestion. I think I could write a piece of js code that wouldn't have a bot running, but you could add the text to any user's talk page in one click. The only thing I would need to know is the name of the template. jj137♠02:34, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately, users can't be deleted. You could probably request the name be changed at WP:CHU, though. Would {{Summary}} work? It is nearly the same thing. Also, yes, a bot would be much easier, but the installation...well, from personal experience I know self-creating a bot/bot program is extremely difficult. Unless you are very fluent in any programming languages, I'd call it next to impossible (although, don't forget about the BAG). Either way, I'm going to get to work on the js script. jj137♠02:54, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, I created the script. Instructions: go to User:Ohmpandya/monobook.js and add importScript('User:Jj137/editsummary.js'); and refresh. Now, whenever you click edit on a user talk page, click the summary button and hit save and it will remind them. The only thing is, it doesn't work with wikEd installed, so just click the little button for it to temporarily disinstall it. jj137♠03:36, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I have to ask, did the tool work? If not: you don't have to click the new section link, just the edit button; also, you have to remember to refresh your browser after updating your monobook. :) jj137♠20:54, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
That's great! My javascript isn't very great but I guess I can get by. :) We can if you want. I have another question someone will definitely ask you; I'll add it to the page. jj137♠01:06, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, we remind you not to template the regulars. Making a personal, specific comment will probably make for a friendlier and more productive atmosphere than using a template that treats the editor as a clueless newbie. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. krimpet✽01:07, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
