Speedy deletion nomination of Colm O'Shea

[edit]

Hello Hedgefunding,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Colm O'Shea for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. scope_creep 16:53, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Colm O'Shea

[edit]

Hello, Hedgefunding,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Colm O'Shea should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Colm O'Shea .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks, scope_creep 17:53, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Ewan Kirk

[edit]

You may run into some trouble with this biography, Kirk's notability and significance appears to be, so far as I've read, surrounding Cantab, and in that case, our WP:BLP1E policy *might* be applied toward removing the Kirk bio and simply having it point at the Cantab article. The best way to protect against this eventuality is to, if possible, find reliable third-party publications which discuss his work apart from Cantab in detail, and to add those sources and appropriate summarizing material to the biography. Best of luck, --j⚛e deckertalk 16:56, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance Publishing

[edit]

Hi Hedgefunding,

I was wondering if you would be able to assist with the publication of an article focused on a hedge fund?

I can provide neutral well sources copy but would like someone with the experience of creating articles to assist.

Thanks,

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jason Zweig requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://jasonzweig.com/about/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I have re-examined this. Much of it is a very close paraphrase of https://jasonzweig.com/about/, and the degree of parallelism is too great for it to be fixed by editing, though I did give it a try. This extends even to ambiguities. The source reports him as a n alumnus of "Columbia College'. There are a number of Columbia Colleges, but your draft simply repeats the ambiguity in the original (as it happens, he's an alumnus of Columbia College of Columbia University. ) The source says he " spent a year studying Middle Eastern history and culture at the Hebrew University." Your draft repeats it. But was he in an particular academic program? Did he received a degree
It needs to be rewritten from scratch It cannot rely on the about page on his web site for more than the plain facts, such as years of birth and education and employment. His contributor site at wsj has the same problem--such sites are not indpendent, but are compiled fro information furnished by the subject.
The list of books can be compiled from Worldcat, not amazon. Amazon is unreliable for it repeats whatever the publisher says. The list needs to be supplemented by book reviews published in independent reliable sources. The can be used as third party references. Quoting from them is tricky, because almost all book reviews have a favorable sentence or too. To quote, you need to find the original review. The source quotes a description of one of his books by Warren Buffet. You repeatthat verbatim. You need to find where Buffet has said this, and use that as a reference. It matters very much the context in which Buffet said it--was he writing for publication, or was it a pleasant remark at a conference? It it was a blurb for a book jacket, it's unreliable, people always say nice things there--its not meant to be taken as a formal statement.
Giving speeches is what all book authors do, and all investment analysists with a public presence. It's not something worth focussing on. If you're going to say he gave a speech at a particular place, it has to be important enough to have been reported by independent sources not connected with the sponsor of the talk.
I understand that you are trying not to be promotional. But you are copying from sources that are explicitly meant as promotional. You have to write notwhat the person would like said about him, but what the reader would expect to find about him in an encyclopedia. There's a great difference. Don't rely on copying the format of other articles. 90% of our articles on financial professionals are promotional . There are several hundred thousand articles in WP accepted in earlier years when the standards were lower that we need to either upgrade or remove. The least we can do is not add to them.
I do not want to discourage you, but to urge you to do this properly. DGG ( talk ) 07:17, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
