Wikipedia survey

[edit]

Hi. I'm doing a survey of Wikipedia editors as part of a class research project. It's quick, anonymous, and the data will be made available to the Wikipedia community later this month. Would you like to take part? More info here. Thanks! Nonplus 00:10, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disabled access on CityRail stations

[edit]

I don't think you need to put how much each station is staffed for the purposes of disabled access - if the station offers it in some form a simple yes or no should be enough for the table. If it needs to be spelled out that the statioon is not staffed from first to last train, write it in the article. We don't want articles that are empty because all the information is in the station info box. (JROBBO 10:45, 17 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]

List of Wikipedians by number of edits

[edit]

Just curious, why have you changed the date on that list? It's actually list from February, although it was put on the page in March. April is definitely way too late. I think I had 5000 edits by April 11th... -- Ynhockey (Talk) 09:33, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake. I thought the date was 11 May not 11 Mar(ch). Thanks for pointing it out. Harryboyles

Edit question

[edit]

Hi- I see where you performed an edit in one of talk archives - the original post was dated 29 January 1995[1]. Can I ask why the edit was made, a year and almost three months later? I guess I'm asking because it hasn't been my expirience that many third parties tend to go through old talk archives editing things like this, especially since I don't remember you as being involved in the dicussion. Thanks in advance. Stude62 19:27, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Fix common mistakes and the archive in question had "I think I'll stick with with rananimm". two withs in it. All I was doing was correcting a typo. Harryboyles 00:21, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And I also noticed that you above put 29 January, 1995 as the date. It's meant to be 2005. Wikipedia only started 5 years ago, in 2001. Just proves the point. Harryboyles 00:26, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: CityRail trains

[edit]

Why was CityRail trains labelled as a copyright violation. JROBBO moved the content from the CityRail article and rewrote the content to make it more readable. Harryboyles 08:41, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It obviously looked like a copy/paste from a website somewhere. If it wasn't, the fact that it had rarely-used fonts on this site made it look like a copy/pasted copyvio. Sorry. --Shultz IV 08:47, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

removal of duplicate word using AWB

[edit]

Hi - I've just reverted your "corrections" of my user page and talk archive, which changed grammatical sentences into non-grammatical ones. The trouble with automatically replacing duplicate words is that that can cause problems when the places where double words are are written that way deliberately (FWIW, the sentences changed read "The [New Zealand maps] showing where [places] are are mostly my work." and "[some images aren't there. Those] that are are the coats of arms of local authorities." :) Grutness...wha? 12:11, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you correcting errors on people's talk pages? It's not really a big deal, but I think you should leave people's comments alone, errors and all. Pfalstad 12:14, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It was a user page, not a talk page (my mistake) - but the archive was a talk page archive. In any case, the "corrections" weren't. Grutness...wha? 12:16, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that this issue has come up on two occasions (see above) suggests to me that there is some misunderstanding and divided opinions as to whether it is acceptable to correct grammatical errors in talk pages (although in this case it was a mistake on my behalf and I accept that. Yet to me it still reads badly in a way. Perhaps a comma to separate the parts so it does sound clearer). I believe that simple grammatical errors should be removed for grammar and readability reasons. I do not wish to change the meaning of any contributions that anyone has made as they are all valuable (except blatant attacks that aren't justified). If there is a general consensus by the Wikipedia community that archives should be left alone then I will accept that view. I do believe this is an issue that needs to be discussed so I can clarify it for myself. Harryboyles 13:18, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I want to ditto these other concerns. WP:AWB is very clear that it shouldn't be used for making trivial changes to non-articles. It doesn't really matter if there is a slight misspelling or grammatical error on a talk page. Each time you commit a change you are saving the entire text of the article as a new entry in the database, which is an amount of overhead that simply isn't worth it for fixing miscellaneous errors in old text on talk pages that no one really cares about. Previous users have lost their AWB-editing privileges for using AWB to make trivial edits on non-article pages. AWB has a feature to trim all non-article pages from the list it is currently working on. I suggest that you use it. Thank you. --Cyde Weys 16:51, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for clarifying the reasons for me. I was only trying to do my bit for Wikipedia and I didn't know what others thought. By the way, what is the option to exclude talk pages from the list in AWB Harryboyles 06:44, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes from The Simpsons

[edit]

Thank you for joining The Simpsons WikiProject. I can see that you have been copying stuff from Wikipedia to Wikiquote. Wikiquote however is different from Wikipedia and has its own set of rules, which we should follow. I've been asking the experienced editors how the rules are at Wikiquote:Wikiquote:Village_pump#Quotes_from_The_Simpsons. I suggest that you read or join the discussion. When we get all the answers we need we can start a coordinated effort. --Maitch 18:11, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

JROBBO's Archive

[edit]

Please don't delete or black your talk page. Other people's comments are very valuable. If you want to keep your talk page clear, you can archive your talk page and include a link on the talk page. But please dont't delete portions of your talk page. Harryboyles 08:07, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I delete my archive because I don't want it coming up on Google searches. If there is any way to stop that, I'm happy to leave it there. Until then I'll keep deleting it periodically. The history is still available so anyone who wants to search it can use that. BTW, I actually did archive the last bit I did - I just haven't linked to it yet. Morisset Train Station

[edit]

Just wondering why you have deleted all the station info and replaced it with a link, if you are going to do this it would make sense to change every stations info box. This would make it all uniform across the stations. Even by saying this I don't think it is a good idea to substitute it with a link. Anyhow discuss on the Morisset Staion talk page. Woldo 08:14, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Woldo on this one. The photograph is low quality and is also has a question over its usage so preferably should not be used. Please also see my remarks on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sydney#Railway station userbox header redesign for why I have reverted the template. MyNameIsNotBob 09:13, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Hey, thanks for the heads up about the Village Pump and my ideas. I was unsure where to post it so I just put it in my talk page. --WillMak050389 14:38, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User talk pages

[edit]

I realize that this was entirely well-intentioned, but I prefer not to have people's comments edited by other people on my user talk pages (archived or otherwise). It's fine if you are fixing a bad cross-space link, but for something like this I'd really prefer that it be left alone. - Jmabel | Talk 21:57, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you'd read my talk page, you would have realised that this issue was already brought up with me twice and responded to. It was clarified why it was wrong and since then I have only edited main articles in this way. Harryboyles
Oops, sorry, I didn't read your talk page, I just went straight to the "+" button. - Jmabel | Talk 16:20, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Morriset Station Picture

[edit]

Any chance you could re-upload the pic of Morriset station? It wasn't great but it was better than no picture at all. I'd like to fix up the page and a picture would be good. (JROBBO 10:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Unfortunately, no. I live in Wagga Wagga and don't have a car or a license so it's nearly impossible for me to take one. The picture was from http://nswrail.net/locations/photo.php?name=NSW:Morisset:1 and unless we have rights to be able to use it, we can't. Harryboyles 11:13, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If it was a copyright violation then that's fine - I thought it was your own picture, and I certainly didn't expect you to take another one! I'll leave it be. (JROBBO 11:15, 8 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Editing of GameSpy

[edit]

Hi. I'm not entirely sure how you managed to make this rather humorous edit, but I thought it would be worth noting. Please double check all of the changes AutoWikiBrowser suggests before committing them. Thanks! ~xenc. 12:15, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was having trouble with the copy and paste function. Sorry about that. :-| Harryboyles 13:59, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely no problem, I was pretty sure that the edit was accidental in the first place =) ~xenc. 15:41, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Sydney railway stations

[edit]

Of course Northern Line trains terminate at Hornsby... I didn't change that. They do not, however, terminate at Epping at the moment. The platform on which they terminate is having work done on it for the Epping to Chatswood rail line and has been closed for the last year or two. All trains terminate at Eastwood. I think you've misread something. (JROBBO 08:13, 8 August 2006 (UTC))[reply]

I now know. Completely misread your edit. I realised as soon as i made that revert. Sorry about all that. Harryboyles 08:15, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why'd you revert my post on JROBBO's talk page. While I realised that what I was saying was a mistake on my part because I misinterpreted JROBBO's edit, that's no reason to revert it. "Please do not compromise the integrity of pages." Talk pages don't have to be as rigid in their quality and integrity because they are talk pages, not articles. Harryboyles 08:20, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't mean to revert that. I didn't think it had done it. --JD[don't talk|email] 08:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
