I'm sorry for the last-minute notice, but on Saturday, June 8, from 3 to 6 PM, Wikimedia DC and the Cato Institute are hosting a Legislative Data Meetup. We will discuss the work done so far by WikiProject U.S. Federal Government Legislative Data to put data from Congress onto Wikipedia, as well as what more needs to be done. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed between 12-14 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the initial messages I sent out went to only WikiProject members and users that had over 15 reviews).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. Now, one of the most important criteria is that you have at least 15 independent reviews. If you are reading this, you are likely 3 (or less) reviews short, so if you review another couple nominations, you can become a recruiter! If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".

NOTE: If you are interested in becoming a recruiter but do not meet the 15 review requirement, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters and put your status as "Not Available" until you have reviewed enough nominations.

  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Hi, this move (cur | prev) 00:22, 10 April 2011‎ Harej (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (11,285 bytes) (0)‎ . . (moved Talk:Mandingo (pornographic actor) to Talk:Mandingo (person): per request) (undo | thank) appears to have undone an actual RM discussion (4 participants) on the page on 2009. The dab (person) is used on Wikipedia for types of person, a colonus (person) and so on. Wheras the earlier move was correct by WP:AT CONSISTENCY with the category. Can you please revert. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:30, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

You are welcome to move the page back. I will not contest it. Harej (talk) 09:56, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, but it appears to have autolocked. It requires an admin to revert. Could you please? In ictu oculi (talk) 02:22, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
I've opened a move request so that the matter can be settled. I feel this is the best option since it was last discussed years ago and there may have been a shift in opinion. Either the prior consensus will be affirmed, people will approve the current title, or a totally different title altogether will be recommended; either way, it's been stable at the current name for two years so it's worth discussing. Harej (talk) 06:19, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Sure, thanks. In ictu oculi (talk) 06:52, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:17, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

The target parserfunction seems bizarre from a usability point of view. If the point of this extension is to cut out the hackery in mass messaging, what good does it do to add more syntax to MediaWiki? Harej (talk) 19:16, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

Awarding account creator rights

This morning at the Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, I have awarded "account creator" access to User:Djembayz and User:Sarasays to facilitate account creation at Wikipedia outreach events. I understand that I have done so outside of ordinary procedure. I know both of these users personally and I trust them to use these privileges wisely. If possible, I would like for them to retain these privileges indefinitely so that they can create accounts at future Wikimedia DC events. African language edition editathon in DC area?

James, What would be the possibility of organizing an editathon for African language editions of Wikipedia in the Washington, DC area? This is just an idea at this point, and not a new one (have raised it in the past). Given the international populations around some major world cities, I wonder if there are any precedents for gathering expatriates & immigrants who speak languages of less-developed WP editions to network and work on editing.--A12n (talk) 17:56, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello A12n! We've discussed the possibility of edit-a-thons for African languages, but it would only be possible if (1) we can find people who write in those languages and (2) at least one of them has experience editing those language editions of Wikipedia. The second thing is very important because none of us in DC who currently facilitate edit-a-thons can read/write in African languages (a product of systemic bias), meaning we wouldn't know how to navigate the interface of those language editions, nor would we understand the editorial or community norms on those sites. Do you know any organizations or groups that would be interested in participating in such an event? Harej (talk) 00:19, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Greg Kohs and WikiConference USA

Dear James: Is this report accurate: WikiConference USA bans critic from open meeting? If it is accurate do you know if a response from the conference organizers is forthcoming? I won't spend time explaining exactly how upsetting this is and how very bad it looks on its face until the accuracy of the report is confirmed. It looks really bad, though, and I really hope there's a plausible explanation. Note that I'm not asking about the rejection of Kohs's presentation, but only about the allegation that he was barred from an event touted as "open to all participants, regardless of previous level of involvement with Wikipedia or the Wikimedia projects. We welcome the curious, the skeptical, and others wishing to engage in meaningful conversation about the Wikimedia movement in the United States, free culture and digital rights, advocacy and outreach, community building, and technology." I posted the same question on Newyorkbrad's talk page, but he declined to respond substantively. I am also leaving it on the talk pages of the other conference organizers.alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:18, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Oh, as in the third Wiknic in Frederick. My apologies! I'll correct it in the blog post. Harej (talk) 21:34, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah. Sorry for not being more specific. Editing anything on mobile is torture. Zell Faze (talk) 13:25, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

African language edition editathon in DC area? II

Following up on conversation begun on June2-3, it may be that some sort of meet-up would be necessary as a first step. I can do a reasonable amount of editing in the ff & bm editions, and think that through personal contacts could start to bring together a core group that then could organize an editathon.--A12n (talk) 12:47, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Excellent to hear, A12n. I'd be happy to help schedule an edit-a-thon with you. What days would work? Do you have access to sources in Fulfulde and Bambara that could be used for articles? Harej (talk) 20:23, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I will have to check with some contacts before proposing dates. Would have been nice to get something going in early August at about the same time as the US-Africa summit (see USIP's page about it here), to catch the wave of publicity, as it were, but not sure I personally will have time then. I do have some items in Bambara and Fula (and some other languages, notably Hausa) including references, but will have to dig them up and prepare. Is there an editathon preparation check-list or set of guidelines? Realizing that while the concept is easy, my only participation in one was in passing while in South Africa several years ago, so I'm not aware of what the "best practices" are for a successful editathon.--A12n (talk) 11:41, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
The concept is indeed easy and you're welcome to come to any upcoming meetup to learn more. In fact we'll be hosting an edit-a-thon at the American Chemical Society on July 12 if you'd like to come. The only real requirement is that you have a space with Wi-Fi where you can conduct the event. Beyond that, it is good to have a theme for the event, including a list of articles to create or improve and a collection of sources on the topic. Is there any particular theme you'd like to focus on for an edit-a-thon? Harej (talk) 20:36, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks (again belatedly). Obviously didn't make it today. Per theme(s), a good one might be one linking with the medical articles WP project (don't have the link handy), which is not limited to African language editions. But it could be a natural starting place with perhaps a less technical "co-theme" on some other subject, perhaps articles on places in Africa in African languages.--A12n (talk) 22:02, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

WSM map tool

Thanks for your comment on Gates House. I also see that you are listed as the maintainer for the WSM tool. That tool is an excellent way to see what's nearby, very useful. I have one error to report, and one suggestion. If this isn't the best way to do that, point me to it. The problem is if the name of the image contains a quote, for example, the image for West Virginia Children's Home, http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:West_Virginia_Children%27s_Home.jpg. The tool gets stuck trying to show 'http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West%20Virginia%20Children'.

For the suggestion, it would be nice if there was a box to check to say "show red squares only". Otherwise the user needs to click each numbered cluster, or otherwise zoom in, and look for the red squares. That option would allow the user to find sites without images much more easily. Volunteer management

I note you have spoken about the need to recruit, retain, and educated volunteers. I am of like mind.

Would you have a look at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ariconte/Volunteer_Management and the associated talk page and add / comment on my reasoning? Regards, Ariconte (talk) 05:20, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
