General
Thank you for blocking Tournesol. I realized something was wrong and seriously was really close to reporting him to ANI.
Tournesol's reply at his talk page give me the impression that he thinks he is allowed to harass anyone, as long as he doesn't do it so often (like every other week/month or so). Since the problems in June–August 2010 I have completely avoided reporting him to AN, ANI, nor warned or notified him of anything. In fact, I didn't even deserve the 24-hour block in August 2010 (decltype believed I was harassing Tournesol, but that wasn't the point; I was trying to tell him to stay away from me as much as possible).
Again, thank you for blocking Tournesol. I don't know if this block will do anything positive, but at least I know that Tournesol's comments are away from me for at least 2 days.
Best regards, HeyMid (contributions) 10:44, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
- No problem. It's unfortunate it came to that, but I believe it would have been detrimental to the project not to have intervened then since 85% of his enWiki contribs seem to involve you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:04, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Would you mind running through WP:RFPP? There's an image on the Main Page that I need protected. Allmightyduck What did I do wrong? 17:52, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

- No worries. Only ITN is cascade protected (which only applies to enWiki images, not Commons images). Images for TFA, DYK and OTD still need to be locally uploaded and protected, just for future reference. I'll try and run through the rest of RfPP in a minute. BC —>BCE on Template:In the news
Hi, HJ Mitchell. I just noticed an edit that you made, adding news about the Blombos Cave to the Main Page through the {{In the news}} template. I was wondering why you changed the era notation of "BC"—which was present in the article—to "BCE" in your addition of the news to the template. Does this not go against the era notation guideline outlined at WP:ERA in the Manual of Style? If you read that guideline, it says never to change "BC" to "BCE" or vice versa without consensus or good reason. Thanks for your reply. — CIS (talk | stalk) 18:14, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't change it. I copied a suggested blurb from WP:ITN/C to T:ITN more-or-less exactly as it was written. My interest in the matter was solely in keeping the wheels of ITN turning. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:56, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. My apologies for not looking further into the background of it, then. Thanks for the reply. Cheers. — CIS (talk | stalk) 02:50, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Need help with user
I've been having trouble with this editor that just defines possessiveness over articles. If you edit a page (no matter what it is) he'll revert you if it's in his interest and when you try to speak to him about it, he bitches at you with nearly anything he can perceive (or even misperceive to make a Wikipedia guideline look as if it's meaning something different to back him up) all for the sake of him not just simply negotiating. I've tried several times to talk to him, he always yells at me says my edits are "disruptive" or he's just says that he doesn't care and does it his way. (Even see some of the messages he's left me and the history for bands such as Suffocation) He's a real disruption, can you talk to him because this is kind of ridiculous and I haven't been the only user he's done this to. • GunMetal Angel 00:11, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Canvassing at WP:ITN
So, it's obvious I opposed the Tomas nomination at ITN (and still do). But what are the rules if a nomination at ITN has been canvassed? Yellow Evan (talk · contribs) has only commented on four ITN nominations since May (all hurricane-related) and it was Darren23 (talk · contribs)'s first-ever edit to the ITN page. This just shout "canvassing" (off-wiki? IRC?) to me. Just my opinion. Strange Passerby (talk • contribs) 01:15, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- I totally understand that it's already been posted, and it probably won't be removed. Just want to know what the rules are regarding canvassing at ITN, not questioning the posting. Strange Passerby (talk • contribs) 02:04, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think canvassing is the only logical conclusion. It's not as if these editors came out of nowhere—as far as I know, they all have a genuine interest in hurricanes/tropical storms and they're entitled to support ITN nominations that fall into their area of interest, rather like I would support putting a pretty actress on the MP. ;) We need more contributors at ITN and we certainly don't want to give the impression that only "the regulars" are allowed to contribute to ITN/C (disclaimer: last time I checked, I had more edits to that page than anyone else bar Candlewicke and BorgQueen). Even totally discarding the opinions of the hurricane fans who have little or no contributions to ITN, there is still, in my opinion, a weak consensus for posting, especially when you consider the opposers are claiming a storm that caused half a billion US$ in damage isn't a significant storm. It's not just about counting !votes. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:35, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Question for you and your tps'
Hi HJ, hopefully quick question for you and/or your (talk page stalker)s (based on the recent section on WT:Req4Admin). I would presume that in the event of removal of "those" images on Muhammad that WP:3RR and WP:WAR could still be interpreted to apply - my rationale being, as noted under the clear cut exceptions, censorship is not listed. What I cannot find, but am pretty sure I remember having heard before, is that there are those who consider such censorship, as it's removing relevant content to be vandalism akin to (uw-delete). I err on the side of... well, never getting close, but I was curious if what I remember is part of a guideline or just an editor's opinion (and cant find anything clear on it). Thanks, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 05:48, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I believe 3RR would still apply as WP:3RR states only obvious vandalism isn't considered a revert (emphasis theirs). Since the removals are well-intentioned, it can't be considered vandalism. DC T•C 05:55, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- If the images were added purely to cause disruption, then you can make a case for vandalism. However, the point of 3RR is to force people to try and find alternatives to reverting. In such a case, requesting full protection, asking an admin to get involved or going to ANI would all be better than repeated reverting. The exceptions to the 3RR are designed not to suffocate editors who are genuinely trying to keep the most egregious policy violations out of articles, which is why I take a very, very dim view of people who disingenuously claim to be reverting BLP violations or vandalism. Essentially, don't break the 3RR unless there is genuinely no alternative. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:35, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification guys... and no, I wasn't asking on my behalf; as I noted, I'd never get to 3RR (I've requested semi's, and other editors and admins to get involved in the past long before I got close). Just trying to ensure my understanding of policy is correct. Thanks again, R ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 16:02, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

He complained in my user page in the Spanish wikipedia, and I took some time to review some of his edits.
About changing "Lagoon" to "Lake". Note that es:Laguna in Spanish translates to Lake in English, it doesn't translate to "Lagoon" even if the word sounds similar, it's just a false friend word. A Lagoon is placed right next to the sea and translates directly to es:Lagoon. Now, Lake Iguaque is at hundreds of meters above sea level and among mountains, so it can't possibly be a lagoon, it's a lake. --Enric Naval (talk) 12:05, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- The legitimacy or otherwise of his edits is not the point (though, by all means, revert any of my incorrect reverts) it's that he's evading a block and causing further disruption. Tell him on es.Wiki that if he stops socking and makes his case on the talk page of his original account, then we might listen to him, but the more disruption he causes and the more socks he creates, the less welcome his possibly legitimate edits become. Hoax page
So I came across a page while checking up on copypastes and noticed a serious problem with Robert Henry Vaughn - I'm not sure how blatant it has to be for G3 to apply though. Could you or one of your talk page stalkers compare this version of the article to this version of Billie Joe Armstrong (in particular the "Early Life" section) and advise me on the appropriate course of action (or take it yourself)? VernoWhitney (talk) 15:07, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- There is an undeniable similarity there, but it might just be that the author based it on Armstrong's article. If you look at some of the articles I've written on Army officers, they're pretty formulaic. I don't think it's blatant enough for G3 nor does it fit squarely into any other CSD, though {{db-bio}} might be worth a try. If that's declined, then it would probably have to go to AfD. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:14, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll just send it to AfD so it doesn't get recreated. Thanks! VernoWhitney (talk) 16:34, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Inter2Geo Deletion
Dear HJ Mitchell, thank you for your work on wikipedia, but let me say that I am a bit surprised by the speed with which you deleted the Inter2Geo page, in a day or so. It is a European project that bundles together all the major Interactive Geometry software, with an impressive list of academic articles in reputed journals and international conferences: look at the list on our website. So the reputation verified by external sources is met. The tone was not improper, it was neutral. Please explain or revert your deletion. Thank you very much. Christian.Mercat (talk) 18:09, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, it was deleted via the proposed deletion process. It was tagged by another editor and deleted because nobody had objected to the deletion within 7 days. However, that process also allows for the article to be restored if anybody objects to the deletion after the fact. If you'd like me to restore it, I will, but be aware that the tag was placed because the editor placing it didn't think the subject was notable so, unless you can provide evidence that it is, that editor may choose to pursue deletion through the Articles for Deletion process. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:22, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, I am very sorry we all missed this 7 days period there: I was a bit busy and my other colleagues as well. As a matter of fact we are defending our project on Friday 12th Nov before the European commission so it is a very untimely deletion :-) I understand we should have added a list of references to articles talking about our project in academic journals, and as you can see in the list on our website, we do have a lot of recognition and our consortium really gathers all the big names in the field in Europe as you can check on the list of interactive geometry software which is a major topic in math education (no kidding :-) ). Thank you for reverting the deletion so that we can properly start the discussion process.Christian.Mercat (talk) 18:30, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
- Alright then, article's back where it was. Since you refer to the company as "we", I should advise you to read our conflict of interest guideline. You are allowed to edit articles on subjects you have a close connection to, but you should be very careful to adhere to Wikipedia's policies, especially the one on neutrality. As long as you bear that in mind, you should be OK. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:36, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Obama's India visit AFD
Hey. Could you please have a look at this AFD and make a note/strike out the last !vote? An IP added it, faked a sig and timestamp, which appears to have been copied directly from the one right above it. I'd do so myself but the page is making my mobile browser lag like crap. Thanks. StrPby (talk) 01:20, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem a big deal to me. He doesn't seem to be impersonating anyone (probably just forgot to log in) and the !vote would be discarded by any admin worth their bit anyway. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:34, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not convinced he simply 'forgot to log in'; the timestamp is clearly copied (timestamp given is about 22 hours after the !vote)... but your call. StrPby (talk) 01:40, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- There's no policy against copying timestamps. If he'd forged another editor's sig, then that's a serious issue, but it looks like a genuine mistake rather than intentional deception. Even if it were deliberate, the worst that can happen is that it looks like he made his comment 22 hours earlier than he actually did, which doesn't have any bearing on the AfD or anything else. There are enough things to get het up about in that AfD without looking at time stamps! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

- Now I look, I see it was doubly ineligible, because it had been PRODded before in 2006 immediately after it was posted. I guess they hadn't invented the oldprod template then. Ah, well... JohnCD (talk) 21:13, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Copyedit
Hi
I realise you are a very busy person but I wondered if you might have time to give the article Three Laws of Robotics a quick look for a possible copyedit. I have copyedited it once already (and so I realise how big it is and how long it would take) and rechecked it but feel it may benefit from a second pair of eyes.
If you are too busy then no problem as I can always ask someone from GOCE to have a look, it was mainly because you were on the list at the peerreviewers page that I was asking you first :¬)
Thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 23:03, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I have neither the time nor a reliable enough internet connection at the moment to be undertaking a copy edit so I must respectfully decline. However, you might like to try User:Diannaa or make a request at the GOCE. Sorry I can't be more help. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:09, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- As always the best people have the least time :¬)
- There is a November backlog drive on so I figured the usual suspects from GOCE will be beavering away with little time to spare.
- No matter, I am sure I can find someone to do it and thanks for at least thinking about it

Thank you for applying the semi-prot to André (singer). I'm concerned though that the 2 weeks will not disuade the IPs/new accounts from restoring the copyright violations. I originally found and removed the copyvios in early September, since then a new account or IP adds the same copyvio back in about once every two weeks. As such, applying two week protection does not protect the article from the constant restoration of the offending material. Would it be possible to protect for a longer duration, perhaps three months? Perhaps by then they will lose interest...My concern is that if I miss the reinsertion of the copyvio on my watchlist, it will sit there for months or even longer without anyone noticing. Note that there have been zero poductive IP edits to that page since my edit back in September, so I don't believe a longer semi-prot will be impeding positive contributions. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 22:54, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
- The trouble is that mine was the first entry in the page's protection log, so it would have to be pretty exceptional circumstances to justify a longer protection. There are two ways we can proceed: first is the old-fashioned way—if or when problems persist in 2 weeks, you re-request protection (ping me directly if you want) and it'll be reprotected for longer, rinse and repeat with the protection terms increasing each time. The second is the new-fangled way that slightly breaks the rules (but I prefer to think of it as ignoring them) and I can put it on indefinite pending changes. Any preference? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:01, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Just an outside opinion here, I think you should go with the old fashioned way. While pending changes is not a bad idea, the old fashioned way would probably prove more effective in the long run. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 00:09, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
- The problem with option one is that it relies completely on me noticing the reinsertion of the copyvio. I have over 6000 articles (mostly little watched BLPs) on my watchlist...I try to be as on top of it as possible but (shrugs) sometimes I miss things. I'm willing to give it a "last chance" with the 2 week semi-prot, but if the disruption continues I may take you up on the Pending Changes offer. Thanks for hearing me out, --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 00:35, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

AfD of Shanghai High Rise Fire
Hey
Can you take a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2010 Shanghai fire? It looks like a good candidate for speedy keeping, and then we can get it back on the front page. Thanks. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 22:30, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- If it was AfD'd while it was on the Main Page, it qualifies for speedy keep, but it's not and WP:SNOW doesn't apply because we have at least 2 editors advocating deletion, so it'll have to run its week by my understanding of policy, but I don;t close many AfDs. Per [2], two possible reasons why we should not automatically accept such requests:
- We do not protect pages unnecessarily. The policy linked above does include the words "... if there is evidence of vandalism or disruption."
- Users do not own their user pages and the notion of "no one should change this without my permission" is damaging and against the spirit of Wikipedia.
Speaking of which, perhaps it is time to try unprotecting your user/talk pages? I'm sure you have enough TPSs to revert vandalism anyway. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:19, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
- He only wanted it move-protected, so I didn't see the harm. There's no legitimate reason for anyone other than that editor to move a userpage (except for 'crats doing a rename, but they wouldn't be affected by move protection). If he'd asked fro semi prot, I would have been more hesitant. As for my own userpace, only this page is protected, and I provide an unprotected alternative for those who can't edit this page, but the type of vandalism this page gets is obviously the type coordinated and arranged elsewhere on the internet and has been known to return within hours of this page being unprotected, so I don't feel that unprotecting it is an option. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:44, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) You're actually not supposed to edit someone else's userpage unless you have their permission. WP:OWN is about articles, not user pages. Access Denied – talk to me 22:33, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, quoting WP:UP:
- "...pages in (the) user space belong to the wider community. They are not a personal homepage, and do not belong to the user."
- --The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:07, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- HJ: I doubt there is any legitimate reason for the article grapefruit to be moved. Andyou are right, it wouldn't do any harm to move-protect it. But yet it never has been protected ... Why? Because we don't generally preemptively protect things here, and I don't think this should be any different for user pages. Not a big deal, though, just wanted you to understand my point ;) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Ice Age: Continental Drift
I can tell you protected the redirect page Ice Age: Continental Drift. I just want to notify you there is a article about the same movie on Ice Age: Continental Drift (film). I don't know if it's because you are trying to prevent it from being a article or what. But if it's ok to have the film as a article, the protected redirection should really be the title name of the film. − Jhenderson 777 17:10, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Reliable?
Reliable? http://music.ign.com/articles/113/1135585p1.html . I honestly have no clue, i hope so because it would help ALOT with Cannibal (Kesha song) and Sleazy (Kesha song) and Cannibal (EP). I know its used on video games but i have no clue if it will meet GA and FA standards for references. Any idea? - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 00:08, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmm, I'd say it might be. You could probably get through a GA review if that were the only major issue, but you'd have to fight bloody hard to prove it's reliable at an FAC. Reliability of sources isn't exactly my speciality, though, so it might be worth a trip to WP:RS/N. My best advice would be the same as for any other source that isn't absolutely iron-clad—don't rely on it too much, try to find alternatives wherever possible (so it doesn't look like the whole article is built on shaky sources) and, if that's the only place you can find the information, consider whether the information is really essential to the article. Have you done a search to see if it's used elsewhere on WP? I'm not sure how, but I believe there's a way to find every WP page with a link to that site. One of my TPSs might know. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:17, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I think i just answered my own question. It's used left and right in basically every FA video game i can find. Eg: Kingdom_Hearts_II#Reception, Wipeout_3#Reception, Wii_Sports#Reception.....i could go on and on. Thanks for the help :) - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 00:20, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Looks like a fairly reliable source; it's a professional article, there's indication that the site has an editorial process, and it's a respected publisher in the field, I believe. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 00:22, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Seems reasonable. If it's used in multiple FAs (and if it's being used for reception rather than basic facts), I can;t imagine there being a problem with it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:23, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Don't you just love it
(talk page stalker)....... when we're supposed to be able to mind read and know why someone blanks information from an article with no explanation? I don't suppose they've ever noticed that little box down at the bottom there, the friendly one called "Edit summary" haha! The one that if used correctly, could avoid many a conflict!
How are you? I've been off work sick all week with the flu :( --5 albert square (talk) 02:54, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Indeed. Or maybe they just filled out the edit summary in invisible ink? I'm sure Huggle is good, but it's not that good! It only takes 2 seconds to fill out an edit summary and, if you're not autoconfirmed, it reduces your chances of getting reverted by about 80%! Unless the edit summary is "ahahfkjnlk", of course! I've been better. I wasted £4 on bus fare going to the job centre yesterday, but if I didn't go (only to be told there are pretty much no jobs!), they'd stop my jobseeker's money which, nearly 3 weeks after I claimed, I still haven't received, so there goes any hope I had of anything substantial to eat today! Lousy job centre. How's RL treating you? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:06, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hah I've been off work all week stuffed with the flu :(. That said, I've not had holidays or anything since last December (well apart from my days off in lieu when I have to work a weekend day) so I hope work are ok with it all. Then I got a nice little letter from the Council reminding me that I hadn't paid my council tax on time. Yet if they paid attention to their emails they would have seen that I emailed them, explained that I was going to go into their offices on the day it was due to make direct payment but I couldn't because the day before I was involved on an incident on board a bus and that day had to then be spent getting medication and speaking to the police, so I emailed them explaining everything, apologising and asking what to do and haven't had a response by email! I'll have to phone and explain exactly what I said in the email :(.
- I've also been trying to fathom out the new ClueBot reverting an edit to Pippa Black before. All an IP did was put that she's now in the American soap opera Outsourced and ClueBot NG took that as vandalism! Went to report it as a false positive and the submit button on the false positive page has gone AWOL so just had to leave a general message. Really is beyond me why it was taken as vandalism so I removed ClueBot's warning from the IP's talk page, and left a suggestion on ClueBot's talk page that if it's going to start reverting less obvious vandalism perhaps it might like to leave a welcome template first of all rather than warn straight away. I can't help but feel if it warns straight away for the kind of reverts it's doing it might scare away genuine editors. It's up to ClueBot's owner though, can only suggest! Apart from that I'm fine! Not good about your jobcentre :( --5 albert square (talk) 13:12, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I've noticed the new, more aggressive Cluebot. That edit certainly doesn't look like vandalism to me. The old Cluebot only reverted the most blatant stuff, but Cluebot NG seems to be reverting less blatant stuff, though I have to say, that's the first clear mistake I've seen it make. I'm slightly concerned that I've seen it revert the same editor 5 times and warn them each time then report them to AIV, but every time I've seen it do that, the edits were clearly vandalism and I've always actioned the report. It's still new, though, so perhaps it'll be fine-tuned as and when. At least a more aggressive Cluebot will make things more difficult for vandals (and give me more excuses to use the banhammer, which is always a good thing!). I wonder what happened to DASHBotAV, though. It hasn't edited since the 22nd of last month. I suppose you can only have so many AV bots running around the place at one time!
- Make sure you do phone the council and talk to a human being (even if it means half an hour on hold listening to classical music!) or they won't leave you alone. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:26, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
