Invitation to the Edinburgh Wikimeet

Hi there,

A few of us are planning a wikimeet in Edinburgh and would love to invite you along :-)
Currently, the meetup is planned for Saturday, 7th June starting at around 1pm.
We have a planning and suggestions page located here as well as a space to sign up as an attendee/possible atendee.

Hope to see you there, Astral (talk) 01:13, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Huggle download statistics

Next to no one visits my projects website so this is to your advantage because the Website Access Stats give an fairly accurate reading of how many people are downloading huggle, per day and per hour. Just thought you might be interested, and if you really want accurate stats, I could install something to track the downloads specifically.  Atyndall93 | talk  10:58, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Re:Huggle

It's nothing to do with yourself in that way. You created a fine tool. But with one or two RfAs in mind, I think that some candidate's are using the tool in order to have a high edit count while doing little else on Wikipedia. Lradrama 14:19, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

No no, a high edit count is a good thing, but only when a user has earned it. Huggle increases ones edit count to a massive amount in a short space of time. This is fine, so long as the candidate branches out into other areas of Wikipedia. But certainly one of the candidate's hasn't done this. I don't think some supporters have looked beyond the edit count, which can thus me misleading. Lradrama 14:23, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Neither you or your tool is bad. I meant... Lradrama 14:31, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Gurch my good friend. :-) I have re-written the essay. Those lot at RfA where I raised the issue could seem to grasp what I was getting across, so I've re-done the whole thing. Sorry if it seemed like an attack on you or your tool, it wasn't meant to be like that. Whatever, it got blown way out of proportion... Lradrama 16:18, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
That's a good idea. I think age of account & presence of an approval list are the most significant of those. Tools like this are always best in hands of those who are experienced and thus capable. :-) Lradrama 19:52, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

You haven't updated Image:Huggle.png to show the X button and the other interface changes yet. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 17:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Welcome, and thank you for your attempt to lighten up Wikipedia. However, this is an encyclopedia and the articles are intended to be serious, so please don't make joke edits, as you did to User:Mellie. Readers looking for serious articles will not find them amusing. If you'd like to experiment with editing, try the sandbox, where you can write (almost) whatever you want. Mellie 13:05, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't apply, that template is for joking in article namespace. However, the following do:

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary. Thank you.
Constructive contributions are appreciated and strongly encouraged, but your recent edit to the userpage of another user may be considered vandalism. If you are the user, please log in under that account and proceed to make the changes. Please use the sandbox for any tests you may want to do. Take a look at our introduction page to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. Thank you.

But don't forget WP:DTTR! Calvin 1998 (t-c) 17:09, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank You

Thanks for Huggle!

I have always liked fighting vandalism, but recently lupins tool for doing so began to play up more and more (Couldn't rollback, slow updates, 2 minutes wait for reverts). In short, i stopped with it for a while and moved to new page patrol instead.

Until yesterday that is. Sweet mercy, how much do i love one key vandalism patrol now! I can work about a factor 3 faster then i could before, and at the same time i can check each and every edit, not just filtered edits with swears. This tool is sure a major leap in vandalism fighting on Wikipedia, so what else can i do then drop in and give a well meant "Thanks!" for that?

Oh, now i am here anyway.. Why is there such a sad face on your talk page? I hope this flower will cheer it up! :) Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 19:13, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: Mistake?

Hi Gurch, what is this [2] revert all about. I guess this was a little huggly miss? :). Apart from that, if it is an unintentional miss, could there be something wrong with the user whitelist? I am pretty sure i am on that list, and as far as i know, it should ignore/prevent reversions from trusted users. Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 18:16, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

After making some changes to Huggle, I was testing they worked correctly... and evidently they didn't. I intended to revert myself immediately afterwards but someone who was still trying to revert the original vandalism using "undo" did it for me -- Gurchzilla (talk) 19:11, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I already expected something along that line, as you are one of the last i expect to vandalize. Well, good luck with solving this problem then, and if you ever need another test target for something, feel free to aim at me :). Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 19:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Dynamic IP

Hello Gurch -- I recently received a revert note from you about Zahra Ahmadi wiki page -- I am on a dhcp assigned IP address from my ISP and can assure you (as I checked) -- I only received the lease this morning and as such can not be the person responsible for the vandalism.

Seems quite immature to me -- I shall be passing on your comments to my ISP if they wish to follow this up thats their call.

I wish there was a more reliable way to respond back to (or identify even) the editors of wikipages than simply by IP address. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.3.124.73 (talk) 13:58, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Umm.... you actually don't have to do that... if the the person that had your IP address keeps vandalizing, we will forward the case to the Abuse Reports department and they will contact your ISP. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 18:10, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Your edit to Bishonen's talk page

Re this. It would have been better, I think, to point the discrepancy out to Bishonen, rather than fix it yourself. At the moment, it looks like she wrote the whole of that statement back on 23 March 2008. In cases like this, it is better to let the editor themselves update the statement. Or if absolutely feel you need to say that right now, something like Updated by Gurch 06:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC) tends to at least avoid misleading people, but is still probably a breach of talk page etiquette. Would you consider reverting yourself and leaving a message for Bishonen instead? Carcharoth (talk) 07:25, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water.ogg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Regarding your notice of reverting an edit, okay, I suppose job well done? I'm not quite sure how to respond to that, to tell you the truth; I was not responsible for that vandalism, but since I'm not registered, I suppose that's the risk I run for just being an IP address currently. 74.242.44.144 (talk) 02:38, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Contributors who choose not to create a user account are identified by their IP address, as there is no other way of identifying them. As IP addresses may be shared by several computers, for example in a school, or be reassigned to many different people over time, for example with a dial-up ISP, contributors using particular IP address will see messages left for a previous user of the address, sometimes many months ago, as is the case here. Any messages that do not concern contributions that you have made yourself may be ignored. If you do not wish to recieve such messages, you may create an account; you do not need to provide any information at all to do this except a user name and password. Creating an account also allows you to start new articles, and edit some 'protected' pages (once the account has been active for a few days). Thanks -- Gurch (talk) 15:26, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

It's impossible to get to Huggle's main window without logging into an account which passes the user group and config page checks, so all this does is allow users who would be able to use Huggle anyway to reveal their IP addresses; abuse from said IP address would result in a block that would also affect the user, unless they were an administrator (in which case they should know better), so I don't think there's any scope for abuse. I'll make sure it's fixed in the next version, though, as it's certainly confusing (and some people might not want edits attributed to their IP address) -- Gurch (talk) 23:24, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Huggle

I'm not sure how that could be improved; it's mostly a matter of I just revert vandalism without paying any attention to the article I'm reverting, so when later queried, I find it difficult to recover the revision in question. The only solution would be to add a notice somewhere that would request diffs when commenting on an edit.

As for your other question, that edit clearly wasn't vandalism, and was almost certainly a case where I accidentally pressed the revert button rather than the show next edit button right next to it. This is where I think Huggle could be improved somewhat, as I've experienced this issue a number of times before.
